Horse Illustrated (1-year auto-renewal)

I have been a subscriber to Horse Illustrated for many years, and have always praised it. The magazine was originally published with well written and thoughtful articles that covered both Western and English ridding, general horse care, and gave very helpful tips. But within the past couple of years the quality of the publication has gone downhill.

Not only has the magazine thinned out but the articles have become biased and poorly written. Adds and articles promoting a single product occupy more of the magazine than ever before and the shift from a well rounded equine magazine to 'snob mag' is quite clear. The majority of the magazine is now aimed towards the English rider with an eye for fashion. What where once helpful tips have now become one sided suggestions.

This magazine would be a welcome addition for a horse-crazy teen who is more likely to have a new car than a horse. But if you are looking for something with a bit more substance, advice, and general tips, this is not the magazine for you.

I started reading Horse Illustrated (HI) when I was a horse-crazy kid and I loved it. But now that I'm an adult and have gotten more serious with my riding, HI doesn't cut it anymore. It caters to both western and English riders and provides general horse care information. That means if you're looking for in-depth riding articles, you'll want to try discipline specific magazines like Practical Horseman, Dressage Today, or Horse & Rider instead.

My biggest gripe with HI is that none of the articles stick with you. Nearly every topic the magazine covers can be found in any horse care book. Also, the magazine is rather thin with LOTS of ads and breeder listings in the back.

The bottom line: If you love horses and just want a general horsey mag, you'll like HI. If you want to read something that goes more in-depth, you might want to look elsewhere.

HI is the industry's fashion magazine. There isn't really any depth, you just look at it for the pictures. Sometimes there's nothing wrong with that though.

This magazine really scratches an itch when it comes to beautiful horse photos and individual breed studies, not to mention the excellent horse training articles and very important horse care information contained in each monthly edition. The attractive layout and precious letters from horsey readers (I was especially touched by the letters from owners of older horses) makes this magazine a great pick for horse-lovers of all kinds -owners and non-owners, and very enlightening for wanna-be-owners. The advertising section in the back of the magazine is a great resource for locating breeders, tack and supplies, where to go for a weekend getaway on horse-back, and even schools that offer education in Vet/Farrier fields. Vogue - Russian Edition

I am a student of Russian and I've been reading American Vogue since I was 13 (so eleven years). I find this magazine absolutely stunning. All of the 2010 editions featured models (not actresses) on their covers. They also feature more Slav/Russian models than American Vogue. This magazine is worth the extremely steep price tag! I recommend it! 5 STARS!

Seeing the Everyday

I love this magazine! It is filled with great pictures, and stories that inspire me as a mother. I feel so buoyed up after reading these stories. The experiences expressed are of the simple things a parent did that gave that individual the tools needed to become who they are as an adult. It shares how the small, seemingly insignificant interactions of everyday make a huge, positive impact in the life of a child. While I still have improvement to make, this magazine has helped me, over and over, check the responses and reactions that I give to my children when they come to me with their various concerns. Anyone can benefit by incorporating the saying that was in one issue: "The first thing first is kindness."

Burda Style - English ed

NOTE: This is the English language version of the magazine.

Burda Style is really a beautifully laid out fashion magazine that includes all the patterns so that you can make everything shown in it yourself.

Each issue has at least 40 regular size clothing patterns for women. The patterns have to be traced and the seam allowances added in, but you can easily modify them this way and it is still easier than drafting them yourself. Burda patterns are the most fashion forward and best fitting patterns available and Burda is much more technically advanced than the American pattern companies.

Unique fashion accessories and home decorating projects are presented in a DIY format in every issue. The magazine ventures beyond sewing with original crochet, knitting, and craft project patterns. Recent issues of Burda Style for example featured a rug that you can crochet, a blanket and pillow to knit, a Fair Isle ski sweater to knit and smocking techniques for a pillow.

All the sewing patterns are rated by sewing expertise. Every issue presents one pattern in a sewing course format to teach techniques and another pattern in a fully illustrated sewing lesson for beginners.

The patterns are feminine with a definite European flair, and even sportswear is more girly than sporty. The magazine is beautifully photographed and the fashions are smartly styled on the most gorgeous models, and of course using the most luxe fabrics. The accompanying fashion copy gives helpful sewing hints, fabric tips, and styling ideas.

I have been using Burda magazine patterns for several years. The plus sizes are actually made for plus sizes and not just graded up. The patterns fit real women, not just models. The instructions assume you know sewing basics, since they teach sewing in Germany in school, not like the States--the only drawback. But they do have one pattern per issue where they walk you thru--so if you are a beginner or need a refresher course, you can start with that pattern. You do have to trace out the pattern from the center sheets before cutting, but you have to do that with all sewing magazines. The photos give you several looks on real models, not just sketches, so you have an idea how the item will look when you are done. Try to get the magazine in your native language, because there are sewing hints even next to the photos, to help you achieve the look, including the fabric and trim they used. Some times they have crafty items--not my cup of tea. January 2011 has small children costumes. Each Burda Style magazine has lots of women, some plus sizes and some children sizes.--no preteen or teen sizes. Once in a while there will be a mens section. There was some knitting in December 2010. I think they were way off base throwing that in.

I am a huge fan of Burdastyle. My husband got me this subscription, and although it is a bit pricey for a magazine it is really worth it for the amount of patterns you get every month. I think the magazine does a pretty good job of presenting wardrobe basics, as well as giving patterns for more trendy items. I always find several things I want to make in each issue. The patterns I have tried have always turned out great, although the instructions are not as good as you get with individual patterns like Vogue, or Simplicity. With that in mind I think Burdastyle is probably more for an intermediate to advanced level sewer who has the experience to overcome sometimes poor/vague instructions. If you are serious about apparel sewing Burdastyle is an absolute treasure.

The RDH magazine is an extremely valuable resource for dental assistants, providing cutting-edge, up-to-date information that's targeted directly to them.

One of the most helpful features is when the RDH magazine shares communication techniques with dental hygienists so that they can effectively communicate information to patients and help them to buy into the preventive dental care steps they need to take to help ensure healthy teeth and gums.

It's also interesting to read profiles of dental hygienists throughout the country to learn more about their lives and their career goals and why they chose the dental care field and how they contribute to helping their patients live healthier lives.

Another key area of focus is pain management both for the patients as they undergo dental procedures and for the hygienists themselves. A recent issue of RDH magazine pointed out hygienists need to proactively fight against repetitive motion injuries, mostly in the neck, back and shoulders. These injuries can be caused by the repetitive use of dental tools and their repetitive placing. The article suggests regular stretching and exercise as the solution.

The magazine is jam-packed with vital information and the price is right so we highly recommend this publication for anyone in the dental assistant profession and anyone who is interested in joining that profession.

Hunting (1-year auto-renewal)

Informative magazine, at $10 for subscription, it can't be beat. Great photos, a few too many ads for my liking, but all in all a good magazine.

Content is fairly varried, from hardware to techniques. Overall not a bad publication.

My three main complaints are:

(1)You don't get 12 issues in a year. The number of issues was reduced after I paid for a full prescription.

(2)Page after page of advertising for the Sportsman Channel.

(3)The gear reviews often don't seem very unbiased, with a heavy lean toward whatever happens to be advertised on the next page.

Men's Fitness (1-year auto-renewal)

I've been a longtime subscriber to Men's Fitness. As one of the other reviewers said, this magazine used to be better. It still has a great deal of workout, diet and fitness information, but it's not as good as it once was. I think the magazine is losing its focus a bit as each issue does seem to have more and more about sex, pornography, etc.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is because a lot of the workout and fitness information is still very useful (otherwise I would give it fewer), but I used to feel this magazine was worthy of 5 stars.

I know that overall men's fitness should include sex (and lots of it) but I tire of hearing it from a magazine whose main focus should be fitness, wellness, and health. I'm not purposing to eliminate it completely, because as we all know sex sells, I just saying minimize it! I can read all about sex in Playboy! I would suggest buying Men's Healthit's a better read.

I've been a subscriber to Men's Fitness since late 1999. In fact, I still go back and use their year-long workout routines from 2000, 2001 and 2002 when I feel like I've hit a rut, or am coming back after a layoff.

Unfortunately, the publication has changed over that time, and sadly, not for the best. Where I was once able to read the magazine from cover to cover and get lots of information that I felt made the issues valuable to keep, since I could go back and always find something to tweak my workouts with, these days, I just don't see the same quality. Not only in the workouts provided, but in the other articles and the magazine itself.

For example, over the last 4 years or so, when they started to put celebrities on the cover, LL Cool J is one of the VERY few that they have managed to discuss any type of a workout with that really goes further than the standard, "Oh, I do weights 3 days per week and cardio 4 days, blah blah blah" repetitive answer. Instead, the writers focus on their movie, their CD, or how they feel about the sport they play. If they put Ryan Reynolds on the cover, then I want to know what his workouts are like; sets, reps, what he does on different days of the week and so on. Not how he feels about whatever role he's playing in his new movie, not who he's dating/married to, not the kind of clothes he wears or what he drives, which is typical of the type of interviews and articles that appear issue after issue in the magazine today.

In a nutshell, Men's Fitness appears to be drifting away from the informative magazine that I feel that it used to be so much so, that for several years, I held it in higher regard than Men's Health to something resembling Maxim. In other words, a magazine that I will flip through once, and forget that I have it an hour after I've read it. And that is really too bad, considering that it used to be such a high quality magazine at one point in time.

This magazine has great covers and gets your attention right away. I was was drawn to the cover because it claims to have great article inside, but the articles are very short and pointless. It was a good magazine few years back but now it just seems like they don't know what their doing.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that MF had changed their format and I had a chance to read the first and second issues. They are full of information and have a good division between the sound bite articles and articles that go into a good depth on a person or health issue.

Mental Floss

In an age of books "for dummies" and "complete idiots," Mental Floss is a magazine that makes you "feel smart again." Let's face it, some of those "dummies" books are pretty good, but you wouldn't display them in your home or read them on the train. By contrast, I openly read Mental Floss in public and place the latest issue on my coffee table.

The magazine combines a cheeky sense of humor with a wealth of information. I loved the recent "Y Files issue." "Why is yawning contagious?" "Why do people yell `Geronimo' before jumping?" "Why does the United States print $2 bills?" Mental Floss delivers the answers. Trivial pursuit may leave you wondering "why" about an answer, but Mental Floss never does.

The current "swimsuit issue" is a blast. It's not exactly titillating, but it is stimulating. The sight of Einstein and Eleanor Roosevelt in swimwear is enough to turn your attention to the articles.

There's no magazine I'd recommend more highly.

I have subscribed to "Mental Floss" from the very beginning, and now look forward to each new issue anxiously. Founded just a couple of years ago by two former college roommates who wanted a fun, hip, urbane magazine to make them smarter with style, "Mental Floss" has become a huge success, and is one of the few new magazines that debut each year that is actually prospering.

Each issue is loaded with information on interesting topics, from how common (or very uncommon) things work, to odd and unknown histories and biographies that you will not find anywhere else (and if you did, certainly not in as condensed and succinct a form as you will find here.) Without exception, the writers are literate, knowledgeable, and good humored.

The things that you don't know will amaze you after reading this magazine. Try "Mental Floss", and I am willing to bet that you will be hooked. I know I am.

There are magazines you read for specific how-to texts, like how to fix your kitchen sink. There are magazines you read to stay up to date with the latest news in the world, your field, or a given region. Then there are magazines like Mental_Floss, which is more like a "News of the Weird" magazine version release. These aren't brain puzzles to improve your memory a la Brain Age. They aren't research pieces that will test or challenge your mental ability. Instead, they are quirky factoids.

What is yelling "Geronimo" all about? Just what is a "Vegemite Sandwich"? There are all sorts of odd things covered here. Sometimes they touch on science, world politics or human relations but often they're related to pop culture, the things you hear every day and never really thought about.

It's intriguing that how you react to this magazine is probably based a lot on what you have read until now. If what you've been reading has been mainstream newspapers aimed at the "lowest common denominator", or the Dummies series of books, you'll be greatly refreshed by this! This magazine doesn't assume you're a dummy with a dead brain. It assumes you want to learn, to grow, to find out the "why" behind the things in your world. It's aimed for people who pop onto Wikipedia when they hear about a new, interesting item on the news ... or people who jump onto IMDB to see what else an actor was in when they watch a movie. It's for people who are intrigued by those connections and backgrounds.

On the other hand, Mental_Floss generally provides a surface read. It's the perfect bathroom magazine but for those who already get mentally challenging magazines, they might be let down by a magazine that is explicitly named Mental_Floss. This doesn't provide in depth or rigorous details on anything. If the academic magazines are at college level, Mental_Floss is more like the fun high school underground newsletter that tackles intriguing issues that might otherwise be ignored. Now, before you start to clamor that most newspapers write at a 5th grade level, that is in fact untrue! Here's a factoid for you :) The New York Times writes at a 12th grade level of vocabulary and comprehension, while most other newspapers fall between 9th and 10th grade. The 5th grade stat came from the 1700s and 1800s.

Still, every magazine has its target audience and its purpose in life. Mental_Floss isn't there to provide in depth education. There are other magazines for that. Instead, it gives you great tidbits on things that many people care about things that are *super* to use at cocktail parties, networking events, dinners out with your boss or employees. Instead of getting into a discussion about religion or politics, and perhaps starting the third world war, you can give info on a topic that will intrigue most people there, and often impress them.

Definitely a magazine that just about every age group will enjoy and that is very "useful"! If I have a real issue with this magazine, it's that it only comes out every other month. It'd be great if they could get this onto a monthly schedule, with more intriguing facts to keep us fresh and full of new information.

Let me start off with I subscribe to at least 15 magazines covering a range of subjects. Mental Floss is the only magazine that I save and leave out for guests. The reason I save it is that is a very quick read that can be read while people have a few moments to spare. The articles are short and don't provide much depth. However it is enjoyable to read something that requires no brain power to process. Mental Floss is a great magazine that you can sit down with and read in one sitting. It even occasionaly brings a smile to your face. I suggest you give it a chance but don't expect to much.

I just recieved my first copy of mental floss and I havent been able to put it down. In one sitting I found out the meaning behind common nursery rhymes, the origins of conflicts in Rwanda and East Timor, and realized the importance of physicists. Mental Floss is different then Time, Newsweek etc. because it puts information and knowlege out there in a way that wont bore you to tears. I can feel my brain expanding everytime I turn the page and feel much more confident in global news and relive prior events, fads, and trends that I soon would have forgotten (rubix cube?). I really am eager to keep getting new editions. Maybe in a few years, I can finally send for my MENSA exam.

Pastel Journal (1-year)

I accidentally happened upon the August 2005 issue and couldn't believe the cover was a pastel. I have dabbled in pastel recently and quickly snatched this up. There are lots of beautiful photographs of contemporary works with features on the artists' themselves, some of which have step by step photos of how the work was achieved. The downside is that there are only 6 issues per year. The back of the magazine has an extensive listing of pastel courses/workshops/exhibitions throughout the US and internationally, taught by prominent pastelists.

I'm amending this review. I got a subscription and the delivery was horrible. I often did not get issues unless I emailed the company, or they came very late. It seems as if they're extremely disorganized I'm not sure what's going on, but I did not continue my subscription. Beware!

I find this is worthy of a subscription to keep up with info, artists names, and some excellent art. I find some issues have artists with horrible compositions, weak or incorrect values, inconsistant light sources, or temperature control in paintings. I am open to abstracts, tight realism, loose impressionism, surrealism, etc but ALL SHOULD have correct design principles and fundamentals. About every 3 issues is a winner with 7/8 of the artists strong but some of the other issues you are lucky to find 1/4 that don't look like they are a novice.

Compared to the other notable music magazines I've browsed, Music Connection cover stories always seem to showcase bands, artists and producers I'd actually be interested in reading about. I was fortunate enough to even have my own music reviewed in one of their issues! The folks who put this mag together seem to be real musicians and genuine music fans, making for a great publication!

Music Connection is a great magazine. Being a publicist, I've worked with them directly and can only say good things. When covering large name artists, they always make sure to ask questions that will be helpful for smaller, up and coming artists and all their articles are a good read.

This magazine is packed with good music business information. It has frequent interviews with heavy decision makers and could be used as a good source for understanding current and future trends within the industry. This is a must have for anyone who is or wishes to enter the music industry. That being said it isn't perfect. It doesn't provide information backed by credible research. If a business provides subpar service you'll never know it until after the fact. It also doesn't do well in terms of providing tips, tricks, and how-tos, but if you want to know about available resources or read the perspective of business leaders this is a good magazine to purchase.

I got this for a teen cousin of mine that was interested in music as a career. I later canceled it (and I'm still waiting on that to go through) because it was over her head. I think it would be very good for someone that can grasp the information better. For a teen, stick to the more basic mags.

Paris Review

If you were locked in an attic by cruel parents, and allowed to read only one literary journal, The Paris Review would entertain you with its sword-slicing poetry, move you with soul revealing fiction, and show you the bare-knuckled truth about human nature in its non-fiction. You would emerge from that attic, years later, better educated and aware than 80% of the planet. The other 20%; you could hold your own.

The writing in the Paris Review is probably unmatched elsewhere in a popularly available magazine. Other magazines and reviews sometimes have top quality pieces, maybe one or two excellent pieces in each issue, but I found that the high standards of quality in the Paris Review is very rarely matched. The Paris Review unlike most publications is systematically excellent.

The fictional stories are interesting and seemingly unique. The poetry is vivid and compelling. The interviews and non-fiction pieces also are no less enticing, excellent and important. If you are interested in writing, in reading compelling fiction and non-fiction, or the creative arts generally, I strongly recommend this magazine.

This is one of my favorite subscriptions and I look forward to my quarterly issue. For those who think that $12 an issue is a bit high: there is almost no advertising in this periodical. There are a few ads (typically two near the front and the back cover) from publishers or Chanel, or something else classy. No ads fast food, deodorant, etc...

What this means is that this periodical must survive with almost all of their profits from readers and subscribers.

Onto content. Every single month there averages about 200 pages + of poetry, short stories, essays, and interviews. The content is varied and of excellent quality. Many works are from contemporary and rising authors but several are from older and even deceased writers (such as an unpublished work of Bolano's being printed in four parts in four issues). Again, the content varies but is of high quality. The last issue had interviews with a couple of iconic science fiction writers (I use the term science fiction loosely): Samuel Delaney and William Gibson. These interviews were so well executed and written that I now have novels from both authors, as well as some of the authors they mentioned, on my library queue. In a previous issue I read a Franzen interview and decided that I needed to read his novels (glad I did), as well as a Ray Bradbury interview that rekindled my interest in Fahrenheit 451.

Some of the stories and poetry deal with real issues: sex, drugs, death, life; so this is not all sunshine and happy unicorns. There are a few of those for optimists, but many of the stories and poems are dark, depressing, and real. In their pages I have discovered a wide range of literature and I will continue to support their periodical as long as they maintain their high standards for quality literature.
