Highlights Hello

Hello has only been out for a few months, just in time for our new arrival and so far she loves it she's 16 weeks today. The pictures are bright, colorful, simple, yet detailed enough to hold her attention. I love the variety short story, a sing-a-long song using a familiar tune but with new words and pictures to match, Find It puzzle and rhymes. The magazine comes plastic wrapped so you don't have to worry about all of the various hands that touch it and the pages are laminated and rounded (no staples either) so it feels sturdy and safe for little hands. So far we love this magazine and read the issues over and over to our little one. I feel that this magazine can growth with her. I look forward to each delivery.

We've gotten Highlights Hello for a couple months now. It was a gift for my 1 year old, and not only does she love it, but my 3 year old does as well. The pictures are cute, bright and colorful. The stories and poems are cute and short, just right for little attention spans. It is printed on a good quality, slick paper; it does not feel cheap at all. Safe and cute for little ones. Very much worth it!

At first I thought a magazine for a baby sounded silly. But when my just turned one year old started constantly trying to steal her big sister's High Five magazine, I decided to give the this one a try. I'm so glad I did! My baby girl loves having her own magazine. She wants to read it every night before bed and then even wants to take it into her crib with her. Just like the other Highlights magazines, the content is engaging, very cute, and age appropriate. Even my older daughter is curious about it when a new issue arrives and she wants to "read" it to her little sister. So cute to see them excited about looking at it together. I'm also pleased with the construction. Just when the stitching (instead of staples) started to come a little loose, a new issue arrived. Our first issue has held up well, and my daughter has been pretty hard on it the way she plays with it in her crib every night. Leave it to Highlights to come up with a magazine for babies and toddlers that actually works for that age group!

Die Zeit - Hamburg

One of the biggest names in the German newspaper market, Die Zeit is devoted to its weekly publication rhythm in structure and content. It is not last-minute but relevant, in-depth, and filled with background.

It is not an easy newspaper to read by any means, you do need high-level German in areas of politics, cultural affairs, economics, etc... to enjoy its full power.

It is the central organ for the German academia, universities, and intellectual circles, an important source that is usually right on the money and has an autonomous voice in political affairs and economics (though for political affairs I personally prefer the slightly more Liberal Frankfurter Rundschau or the NZZ, for economics the FAZ).

If your German is good enough and you are interested, I definitely recommend Die Zeit...though remember: you need Zeit to read Die Zeit!

P.S. Oh yeah, and it is THE source for certain job ads in Germany, that is, for the academic job search, high-level engineering, research, labs, and some business. If you are looking for a job in Germany, find out which newspaper to read, the market is fairly precisely segmented!

There is nothing in the English-speaking world that compares to Die Zeit. If you've seen recent issues of Time or Newsweek, it's sort of what they're aiming at -but Die Zeit takes hours to read, while the former publications can be read in under an hour. Die Zeit is filled with cultural information, news analysis, economics, new opportunies, business, and has always been known for its high editorial standards and excellent writing.

Town & Country (1-year auto-renewal)

OK it's pretty easy to presume this magazine has little appeal for the average person when the advertising focus is on $$$$ handbags and $$$$$ jewelry. But when you look at the long publishing history of Town and Country, you realize that it's not only the rich and famous that are reading it. There are simply not that many of the elite to keep this mag going. So what's in it for the average Jane? First, the writing is excellent. Reviews on anything from books, cosmetics to shoes are specific and dependable. Additionally it's written to ADULTS without an unwelcome emphasis on which starlet of the minute is going to crash next. Finally--and just for fun--the horoscope column is one of the best in any of the women's magazines out there. So dabble your toes in the inflatible kiddie pool in the back yard, add a sprig of fresh mint to your plastic tumbler of ice tea and let your imagination roam free,

I've not seen the most recent issues, so perhaps there is more advertising than there used to be. However, I like T&C. It has a touch of class, and it is aimed at adults, not kids, adults who "have arrived," as the saying goes. Money is not the key to "arriving;" self assurance, knowledge, and capability are. This magazine gives me ideas. I can't buy the things in it, but I can try new combinations of what I do own, use old things in new ways and experiment. I get an idea of what is in fashion in case I need to look au courant for some occasion. T&C is a tool in the same way Vogue or another fashion magazine is. I believe that it isn't necesary to be wealthy in order to look like a million. I also have my own personal saying that I'm never really in fashion, but I always have style my own style.

This is one of the few magazines that provides genuinely interesting, varied and useful information to people who enjoy a "financially comfortable" lifestyle.

They cover a wide range of topics, and are known for photos from recent charity events, debutante balls, and notable weddings.

From designer fashions to collecting art to their regular lists of best charities, best doctors, and best places to visit, this is a reliable magazine. It eschews fads and focuses on getting true value from everyday life.

This is not a magazine for everyone, but it's greatly appreciated by its regular readers. I've read almost every issue since I was 14 years old, and... well, that's a long time. If I could read only one magazine each month, this would probably be it.

If you love to look at fine jewelry, T&C has the most beautiful jewelry ads and more of them than any other magazine. The editorial portion offers insights into the lives and mores of people with more money than brains.

AWFUL!!! This is just page after page after page of ads for grotesque jewelry mostly gaudy watches and necklace sets and clothing. There were two "articles" at the very end of the magazine, and they were awful. One, on Christmas in the English countryside, should have been beautiful. Instead, it contained just a few pics and very little text. What a disappointment.

Don't waste your money. First pick up a copy in the supermarket before you waste money on a subscription. Once you see how really ridiculous this magazine full of nothing but ads really is, you won't waste your money on a subscription.

Family Business - Pa

Since the "odds" are strongly stacked against them, business families who intend to "beat the odds" require the best available resources(e.g. advisors, family business forums and publications.) As a subcriber for more than 10 years, I've found FAMILY BUSINESS to be the single best publication in the field. This quarterly publication features a wide variety of articles which match well with the diverse interests of family members of all ages and generations. V-Twin

This magazine is published by the same people that brought us Maxim. So if you like Maxim, check it out. If you don't: pass. The pictures are slick, models are attractive, but there is little in the way of information on how to do it yourself or what was actually done to the bike. It is basically a picture book. If you are looking for technical articles, how tos or performance installs; check out Road Bike for metrics or Hot Bike or American Iron for Harleys and Victory's.

Are you a cruiser owner that is sick of all the Harlier-Than-Thou magazines out there? Let me tell you, if all you want is to see a magazine chock full of awesome V-Twin custom bikes and you don't care what part of the globe they are from or what badge was on the tank then you better slap yourself down for a subscription to V-Twin magazine.

While pouring through a recent issue of V-Twin I find numerous four page spreads on fantastic custom cruisers that include a Kawasaki Vulcan 800, a Yamaha Road Star and a Yamaha Royal Star plus pictures of reader's rides showing a Yamaha Road Star and a Suzuki Intruder. Of course there are your typical custom Harley entrants including a fantastic Knucklehead and an INSANE custom from Eurocomponants! There are also heaps of ads for vendors that cater to both the Metric and Harley owners which is nice to see. And of course there are naturally write-ups on product reviews, wrenching advice, bike events, biking editorials and general bike news geared to the cruiser owner.

To me this is a great magazine that doesn't try to push the Harley world down my throat and I don't think I found a disparaging comment towards Metric bikes anywhere which was quite refreshing. V-Twin isn't about bad ... `tudes, nor is it full of half naked women and profanity, it's all about custom cruisers and doesn't attempt to be anything its not. Don't get me wrong, I love a picture of a half naked woman laid over a bike as much as the next guy, but at the end of the day we are here for the bikes, admit it. For the record, I`m the owner of a 1999 Yamaha Road Star that I bought almost four years ago (my eighth bike), plus I am the owner of RoadStarMagazine.com, so you can see that metric cruisers and cruisers in general are a passion for me.

Young Rider (1-year auto-renewal)

I received a subscription of this magazine for one year, and although it has its good points, there were enough bad points to cause me not to renew. The magazine has tons of beautiful, full color posters of beautiful horses and ponies. I really enjoyed the quizzes and short stories, as well as some of the features. But my problem with this magazine was that it seems to lean towards the well-to-do little girls riding Welsh Ponies that are trained to show every weekend. I haven't read an issue yet that didn't contain an article about 'winning lots of ribbons in shows.' There is no focus on the other side of horsemanship: caring for your horse, keeping up your stable, and health care. It is simply assumed the 'young riders' will hand their lovely ponies away to their grooms and saunter off to hang their ribbons on the walls of their bedrooms, which will, presumably, also have the mega posters featured in each issue of the magazine.

This magazine is excellent! Offers horse care tips whether you own a horse or not. Helpful riding tips. Answers horsey propblems. You can win neat horse stuff. For kids who ride and don't ride. For begginers all the way up to advanced. I LOVE THIS MAGAZINE. I can't wait for the next issue to arrive.

My 6 year old horse-loving daughter adores this magazine! She can read the articles and stories--they are well written and interesting and not too old for her, and she loves the games, quizzes and, of course, the pictures! She likes it so well we are going to get her a subscription of her own, as we have been having trouble finding it in the horse stores. It is wonderful someone makes a great magazine for the younger horse-lovers!

I purchased subscriptions to both "Ask" and "Muse" for my daughter (9 years old) and am thrilled at the lack of advertising in those magazines. I subscribed to "Young Rider," as my daughter is very much a horse lover. I was dismayed to find it full of advertisements. And not only that, but poor quality ads, irresponsible ads perpetuating gender stereotypes (e.g., males do not wear pink) and blatant consumerism ("From hoof to toe, wear the brand.") While I'm using the magazine as a means for teaching media literacy, we certainly will not be resubscribing. As to the content, it does seem informative, especially for a beginning rider, though the writing is not particularly compelling. And the articles are hard to find amidst all the marketing, making it visually confusing. While my daughter picked up her first issue of "Ask," sat down and did not get up until she'd read it cover to cover, she picked up "Young Rider," glanced through it, tossed it back down and has not yet returned to her first issue. And this is a child who is horse crazy -not much of a testimonial for a horse magazine!

Don't purchase subscriptions from Amazon or Magazine Express.

The following are my experiences with a subscription to Hiragana Times from Amazon.

What this page doesn't tell you is that the Japanese magazines subscribed to on Amazon are filled by a company called Magazine Express and are shipped SEAMAIL from Japan which mean you'll recieve every issue 8 to 10 after it's released.

I placed my order in January and, to date, have not recieved a single issue. After several phone calls, the Magazine Express people (who fill the Amazon subscriptions) said they had to restart my subscription for the May issues which will take 8-10 weeks due to shipping issues. So after ordering in January, I will not receive a single issue of this uncancelable magazine until possibly in late July. Very poor service.

This is unacceptable for a magazine that most US Japanese bookstores (fujisan is one) can get within a week or that you can order directly from the publisher for only a few dollars more. If I had known the shipping policy I would not have ordered and the magazine supplier, Magazine Express will not cancel the subscrition.

I advise avoiding ALL Amazon magazine subsriptions due to their poorly stated policies.

**Update, I wrote this review in June. It is now July 8th and I've just been informed I must wait until August 15th to see if an issue arrives. I ordered the magazine on January 9th and I have had no resolution from either Magazine Express or Amazon who provides no way to contact anyone within Amazon about magazine orders. I reiterate, buying magazines from Amazon if a poor idea.

This is by far the best design magazine anywhere. The price might be daunting but, beyond being on the bleeding edge content-wise, issues are typically loaded with custom papers, finishes, a fold out poster, postcards, and other generally inspiring material. If you are tired of yuppie design rags and are looking for great work that spans an incredible range (every month), this is it. Not for "8 ways to better drop shadows" types. This is the real deal.

I have read this mag thru and thru, and for some 20 + years now it has continued to be at the top of the crop. It is the most superbly laid out and designed magazine with excellant content,that I have ever seen. To be totally honest, I would much rather read and browse this any day over "Print" magazine. This is almost like a graphic design book, that just gets published every 2 months where the best designers in the world are given each about 30 pages to just go nuts on. I found it deep in the stacks of the university library one day and have been hooked ever since...also for those of you who can read/write japanese, german, and english you can have your pick while reading...

Australian Patchwork & Quilting

I am an experienced quilter and am familiar with many of the quilting publications currently on the market. In my opinion this is certainly one of the very best. Beautiful quilts for all skill levels and excellent instructions. Exciting patterns and outstanding use of color. Very inspiring.

Sadly, it is hard to find on news stands or in US quilt shops, and the subscription price in the US is very high. But, if you have the money to invest in one really good magazine, this is it.

While I truly love this magazine, it should only sell for about $9.00 per issue. Buy it on the newsstands or quiltshops and get their subscription card.
