BOOKFORUM is not necessarily a mainstream periodical about books but it does furnish a wide variety of articles, columns, interviews and reviews which will satisfy diverse tastes. It is published quarterly by ARTFORUM INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE, INC. A recent issue contains articles on Ezra Pound, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Georges Bataille, Murray Kempton, James T. Farrell, Aby Warburg, Woody Guthrie, Valerie Solanas and many other notables from the world of arts and letters. The magazine's writing is uniformly excellent. The contributors are mostly academics, editors, poets or authors such as Guy Davenport, Sven Bickerts, Marjorie Perloff, Lee Smith, Thomas Crow and Avital Ronell. BOOKFORUM is an interesting and engaging publication now in its eleventh year and I expect it will continue to have a devoted following for the foreseeable future.

First and foremost, this quarterly magazine is about art. Coffee table art books finally get the space that they deserve in both the reviews and in the interviews. Next in line are novels and the best fresh fiction on shelves today. Culture, interviews and letters follow closely behind.

Though the top publishers (HarperCollins, Simon&Schuster, Knopf, etc.) get their books reviewed, it is refreshing to see the the number of "small press" and "academic press" books that are also reviewed. The reviewers are from various walks of literary life (a writer, a poet, a Sr. editor, a contributing editor, a professor etc.) and almost always the reviews are engaging as well as informative.

If you like mind engaging writers, or are a fan of coffee table art books, you will not be disappointed with this highly recommended magazine.

International Herald Tribune - 6 Issues/Week (Mon-Sat)

I love the International Herald Tribune. As an American expatriate for 16+ years I can firmly say this is a newspaper made for people like me. The articles come from the New York Times and the Washington Post the best of American news reporting. On top of this excellent foundation, the IHT builds articles that are internationally focused and go beyond the 6th grade level narrow hype of American news coverage to go in depth on important topics in Europe, Asia, China, India, Africa, etc.

While reporting well on these areas, the IHT goes a step further and includes article related to the expatriate. I love the cultural side that shows through a regular listing of art exhibitions in major cities around the world. There are articles on purchasing homes abroad. New American tax laws for expatriates. Life in international schools. Traveling off the beaten path. Up and coming markets, cities, and products. It's a global view, one that I need because that's life in the 21st century, especially while living abroad.

Its true, it really is a great newspaper, especially if you live outside the US. But after reading this paper in 3 different foreign countries over the past 3 years, you have to wonder why the IHT charges over [money amount]per paper. It really seems to price a large percentage of would be customers away to other papers. Its quite sad. In fact, while I was in greece I subscribe to the paper for 3 months for about [money amount]in which you would pay nearly [money amount]for that 3 months in the US. If your listening IHT, try lowering you subscription price!

Whenever I'm abroad I always pick up the IHT. This newspaper is great; it features articles mostly pulled from the New York Times and the Washington Post. The focus is very international, although domestic U.S. issues get ample coverage. The paper is an excellent, well-balanced source for news, whether you are an American living in this country or living abroad; and it's also perfect for students of English or U.S. politics and culture.

The IHT is a condensed NY Times. It often has very highquality articles. It follows the editorial liberal left line of the Times. While I am not enamored of it politically it does provide serious writing and news on a wide range of topics.

Of course like most of the world's media it considerably underreports the worst aspects of those closed societies it has more problematic access to.

On the whole though this is a paper especially good for the American newsstarved tourist somewhere out there in the big world.

When traveling overseas, the IHT is a great way to stay in touch with news and business. For sports and entertainment news, however, you're better off picking up the USA Today international editions, as those topics are near nonexistent in the IHT.

BBC Good Food

We bought several issues of the magazine while living in the UK for a few years, and kept them with us when we moved back to the States. They're still our primary source for recipes, and we have yet to find a better magazine. The recipes focus on the freshest garden ingredients of the season (naturally, there are a lot of root vegetable recipes in the winter -this is Britain, after all). We can generally manage to find all the ingredients in the States, except that paneer (Indian cheese) has been a challenge. Remember, rocket = arugula, courgettes = zucchini, aubergines = eggplant, and coriander = cilantro.

I have been reading BBC Good Food off and on for almost four years. It has consistently been better than any other food magazine period. (although its new sister from the BBC called Olive may give it a run for its money). Olive seems to have taken over a few of the features they used to run in this magazine and even without them, this is still the best there is.

I love this magazine. I bought my first issue in Kenyatta airport when my flight got delayed and I was desperate for reading material. My best purchase in Kenya! When my husband went to London I had him pick up the next issue. Great healthy, practical recipes and beautiful pictures, plus helpful information. It's fun to read some of the terms the British use for cooking. I lament that there are no discounted US subscription rates. Maybe if enough of us buy it in the US, they will find they have a market with us!
