Backyard Poultry magazine is a fabulous publication. Bi-monthly it arrives, eagerly awaited, in my mailbox. It is loaded chock-full of great color photo's, as well as black and white photo's; some photo's even sent in by their readers. Some of the features of this magazine include: question and answer forum; where a professional will answer your poultry questions, personal poultry stories, features about the poultry business, farm laws, poultry recipes, breed features and how-to features. One how-to feature a few issues back was on how to butcher your broilers, complete with step-by-step instructions with photos too and written in everyday joe language.
One reason I enjoy this magazine is because of the wonderful variety and balence of stories and features. It covers a wide range of poultry interests. Another bonus is that the advertising doesn't swamp the stories. This magazine is a bit like "Dog Fancy" for chicken lovers-but more practical and useful. Lots of interesting articles about different poultry breeds, both common and rare. My favorite aspect of this magazine by far is a lengthy monthly feature by "The Answer Man" who answers readers' questions about their poultry. I am always really impressed by his thoughtful, complete, and extremely helpful answers to very interesting questions. I have learned a great deal by reading this magazine.
In short, a really fun read for people with pet chickens, those considering getting chickens, and anyone who enjoys raising poultry.Wow! This magazine in wonderful! It mostly covers chickens but it does cover other poultry as well. It features tons of information from readers. I find this very helpful because it's so easy to realate to them! Many suggestions & ideas for raising your backyard flock. Each issue also has reader questions where they are answered & readers can offer their advise as well. Many of these questions are questions weve had ourselves or give us thing to look out for or better yet, look forward too! Readers can even submit their poultry photos! Each cover is a picture of someones bird! It's a very fun & informative magazine. If you have a backyard flock you should consider this magazine. You will look forward to your bi-monthly issues!I'm new to this magazine, and backyard chicken keeping and farming as well. I have a lot to learn and have picked up a couple of books on the know hows and how toos of it all as well. I originally picked up a few back issues of this magazine on Ebay and couldn't believe how enjoyable they were. In some ways its a typical magazine with its glossy ads, regular departments, question and answer and mail section, etc. But its subject matter over all is one of a kind to be sure. I know of no other magazine around that is strictly devoted to raising chickens in your back yard. Big or small operation this magazine is totally informative and more entertaining than you would imagine. Oh some of the articles here and there are a little beyond me yet to be sure. But in no way does this magazine cater to only the knowledgeable and experienced. Every issue I have read so far has had a generous amount of articles and regular features that cater to the true beginner. Besides, its a great magazine to have laying around just to see the reactions and comments that your guests will have... : ) Personally I love it and highly recommend it for either the seasoned or green backyard poultry farmer... : )The magazine is a bit pricey but I always look forward to receiving it. Great ideas and great information on chickens.
