Canadian Business

Canadian Business"Canadian Business" is a long time magazine published since 1928. It is published out of Toronto, Ontario and is generally published bi-weekly.

The November, 2011 issue contains 132 pages. Topics include the following:

An editorial and a separate opinion piece on the Occupy Wall Street protesters

Letters from readers

Winners and losers: companies and people that go up and down

Analysis on Steve Jobs

Article on the oilsands of Alberta province

Article on a successful Canadian mining company

Guide to Canadian graduate business schools (MBA schools)

Article on France's School of Economic Warfare

Article on entrepeneur financing and banking

Summary of three books

The magazine has a similar layout to popular American business and news magazines. There does seem to be quite a bit of coverage of American businesses from a Canadian perspective.

At $70.24 for 22 issues, (1 year), it is pricey. I saw a postcard offering the magazine for $24.95 plus tax, for the same number of issues, to Canadian subscribers only.

Try the website; it is free.

Canadian unemployment rate in September of 2011 is 7.1%.

I sometimes read this magazine and I'm from Canada; it's a pretty good book with a good Canadian slant towards topics.

Backyard Poultry

Backyard PoultryBackyard Poultry magazine is a fabulous publication. Bi-monthly it arrives, eagerly awaited, in my mailbox. It is loaded chock-full of great color photo's, as well as black and white photo's; some photo's even sent in by their readers. Some of the features of this magazine include: question and answer forum; where a professional will answer your poultry questions, personal poultry stories, features about the poultry business, farm laws, poultry recipes, breed features and how-to features. One how-to feature a few issues back was on how to butcher your broilers, complete with step-by-step instructions with photos too and written in everyday joe language.

One reason I enjoy this magazine is because of the wonderful variety and balence of stories and features. It covers a wide range of poultry interests. Another bonus is that the advertising doesn't swamp the stories.

This magazine is a bit like "Dog Fancy" for chicken lovers-but more practical and useful. Lots of interesting articles about different poultry breeds, both common and rare. My favorite aspect of this magazine by far is a lengthy monthly feature by "The Answer Man" who answers readers' questions about their poultry. I am always really impressed by his thoughtful, complete, and extremely helpful answers to very interesting questions. I have learned a great deal by reading this magazine.

In short, a really fun read for people with pet chickens, those considering getting chickens, and anyone who enjoys raising poultry.

I find this very helpful because it's so easy to realate to them! Many suggestions & ideas for raising your backyard flock. Each issue also has reader questions where they are answered & readers can offer their advise as well. Many of these questions are questions weve had ourselves or give us thing to look out for or better yet, look forward too! Readers can even submit their poultry photos! Each cover is a picture of someones bird! It's a very fun & informative magazine. If you have a backyard flock you should consider this magazine. You will look forward to your bi-monthly issues!

I'm new to this magazine, and backyard chicken keeping and farming as well. I have a lot to learn and have picked up a couple of books on the know hows and how toos of it all as well. I originally picked up a few back issues of this magazine on Ebay and couldn't believe how enjoyable they were. In some ways its a typical magazine with its glossy ads, regular departments, question and answer and mail section, etc. But its subject matter over all is one of a kind to be sure. I know of no other magazine around that is strictly devoted to raising chickens in your back yard. Big or small operation this magazine is totally informative and more entertaining than you would imagine. Oh some of the articles here and there are a little beyond me yet to be sure. But in no way does this magazine cater to only the knowledgeable and experienced. Every issue I have read so far has had a generous amount of articles and regular features that cater to the true beginner. Besides, its a great magazine to have laying around just to see the reactions and comments that your guests will have... : ) Personally I love it and highly recommend it for either the seasoned or green backyard poultry farmer... : )

The Bark

The BarkBark is not a how-to-care-for-your-dog magazine. It's a magazine about living with dogs. It has fascinating articles about the lives of dogs and people with dogs. It has history of dogs and poems about dogs and interviews with dog trainers and sheep herders and canine rescue squads ... If you want the latest pet grooming tricks, you won't find it here, but if you want insight into what dogs mean to people and what people mean to dogs, this is your magazine. Charming, touching, smart and simply wonderful.

The Bark is by far the greatest magazine for dog lovers ever printed! Insightful articles, essay, stories, and artwork keep you waiting eagerly for the next issue. They cover health, training, home decorating, entrepreneurs, absolutely everything! And maybe most importantly, the Bark does not cater to breeders or exploiters. Instead of advertisements for kennels, they promote shelters and spay/neuter programs. No AKC elitists here! Every dog counts. And if you are looking for the lastest and greatest pet products, their advertisers have the most original and unusual things to be found anywhere. This magazine focuses on human relationships with the dogs that share our world, housepets to service dogs. When each new issue arrives (and there aren't enough!) we make popcorn for ourselves and for our dogs and the we all hit the couch for the entire evening. If you have one dog, no dog, or many, this is the quintessential reading for any person who has ever loved a canine!

I am a new subscriber, have received two issues so far. This is a fascinating magazine, beautifully laid out, and well written. In the first issue I received (which I have now read almost cover-to-cover, something I Never do with magazines), there were articles about Dog rescue in Asia, the science of the historical relationship between Dogs and their humans, emotional vignettes about the love between Dogs and humans and so much more.

I like the reviewer who likened this magazine to the New Yorker about Dogs. The first issue was chock-full of everything from useful tips to weepy stories to fascinating science.

I made an effort to cancel all of my magazine subscriptions recently, simply because I do not have the time to read them all. This one will remain. In fact, I may start archiving this magazine-it is that good! All of our guests inevitable pick up the magazine, drawn by the crisp graphics, and retained by a healthy variety of reading.

Obviously, I am a fan. I have barely started the second issue, but from skimming the articles, I have full faith that I will not be disappointed.

Subscribe and enjoy!

This is an extremely "well rounded" magazine! I thoroughly enjoy every issue. Bark covers all issues concerning dogs. From articles on veterinary issues, understanding your dogs behaviour, dog gear....and outstanding well written short stories and articles written by people about their dogs and how they have impacted their lives. Very enjoyable reading....from cover to cover.

I highly recommend Bark. If you get your "paws" on your first copy, you will definitely look forward to the next.

This magazine is a nice alternative to Dog Fancy or purebred-centered publications. It contains rescue-related stories and gives mutts equal time. The writers are witty and interesting, and there aren't terrible breeder ads in the back. A good choice for those of us that spay/neuter our dogs and aren't involved in showing.

Mes Premiers J Aime Lire - Print + CD-Rom

Mes Premiers J Aime Lire - Print + CD-RomMy 7-year-old daughter speaks French pretty well but is still learning to read. Mes premiers j'aime lire magazine is wonderful. Each issue comes with a short story that is also read on the accompanying CD (5-10 minutes in length). The stories are interesting and while written for children always have new vocabulary words that neither of us know. I enjoy listening to the CDs and my daughter listens to them over and over again! In addition to the main story, there are several "bandes dessinees" (comic strips) in each issue, a word search or other simple word games, and 2 pages of definitions for particularly challenging vocabulary. This is a wonderful addition to our regular French learning curriculum and highly recommended. It took almost 2 months before the first issue was delivered but now I get them regularly and in excellent condition.

Network World

Network WorldNetwork World is a professional magazine I have been reading for more than a year and it is one of many professional magazines I read on a regular basis. I don't make a living working as a tech professional anymore (I once worked in a position that was close to this field), but I spend enough time using technology on both on the job and at home that my interest in the subject remains high. Most everyone is affected, at least in a small way, by technology at their place of employment and thus most anyone can benefit, at least a little bit, from the helpful articles found in Network World each week.

Network World is a little different from other magazines in several ways. First, each issue is the same length, so it can be counted on for consistency. Second, it doesn't contain "departments", in the usual sense. It still has some of the usual areas that most magazines have, like Letters to the Editor and a closing page that gives the reader food for thought. But other than that, you won't find the usual departments found in other magazines. Instead, Network World is divided into main sections of articles, and these articles are often quite different from one issue to the next.

Since I don't work directly in technology, many of the articles in Network World hold little interest for me. The Applications Services section, for example, often includes articles on redesigning networks, diagnosing problems, and improving performance. These are nice for people who work in the high tech field, but I find them quite boring. They are often very occupationspecific and they will only interest those individuals who make a living in the world of high tech.

However, there are other parts of Network World that do capture my interest and my favorite articles each week are those that relate to technology news. These articles can be business oriented in scope or new product oriented and they never fail to get my attention. When I see titles of articles that include names like Microsoft, Oracle, and others, I always turn directly to the page to see what the article has to say. I come in contact with these types of businesses on a daily basis when I use their products and I am very interested in what new products or advice they have to give.

Network World is, overall, a pretty good publication for those who have any interest in technology. It will be enjoyed most by those who make a living working in high tech. But even for those of us who make our living in a different way, Network World still has some good reading to offer. New products, new challenges, and timely technology business news are the hallmark of Network World and they are the reasons I will continue to read this magazine.

There are few printed periodicals I regularly read anymore and Network World is on that short list. Both working and aspiring IT professionals can benefit from the industry analysis, technology reviews, and editorials found in every issue. Like most magazines these days, there is almost a 50-50 split between content and ads, but that is a sad fact of life for print media in the Internet age. Still, techs and sysadmins should find both the articles and the advertisements worth reading.

Nice magazine to keep you updated with the latest of the state of start technology in Computer Networking.

The New York Observer (1-year auto-renewal)

The New York ObserverIf I had to pick one newspaper that captured the drama of NYC it would be the New York Observer. Unlike any newspaper (the New York Times, the Village Voice) or magazine (New York, Time Out NY) the Observer is always on the inside track when it comes to politics, business, theater, fashion, culture, publishing, the arts, real estate and society. This well designed (and illustrated) publication which is printed on a pale orange newsprint will become a welcomed guest to your weekly reading.

If your looking for dry objective facts then this is the wrong publication, however it's personality that makes New York City what it is and the Observer is like having a team of best friends write you a weekly cheat sheet. What's nice is that while the Observer can focus on high society and culture but it never takes itself too seriously and has quite a bit of good humor. There is a high attention to detail so even an article on a community board meeting or a real estate listing can become interesting.

I love the New York Observer, but have subscribed for 1 year for only $14. They offered a Groupon at that price and then later began offering the price directly on their website. Not sure why Amazon is charging this much still.

Washingtonian Magazine

Washingtonian MagazineI subscribe to "Washingtonian" magazine for the informative details included in many of the articles. I have the January 2013 inauguration issue in front of me that includes among the following:

Pages 31-36: Information on the events being hosted in the D.C. area during the period of January 2013.

Pages 117-119: Ideas on facilitating an upbeat mood during the winter.

Pages 151-167: There are an abundance of restaurant recommendations within these pages.

Pages 169-174: Tips on what to look for when deciding to hire a professional mover.

"Washingtonian" magazine is good for both locals looking for innovative ideas on navigating the D.C. area and tourists who plan a short-term visit.

Star Wars Insider

Star Wars InsiderI would like to first say that I really do enjoy this magazine, my current subscription through Amazon has been problem free and even saved me $ when I originally purchased it for 38.99.

Here is where my current problem lies...

A few days ago i checked to see how much it was going to be to renew my sub and I was stoked to see it was for the same price. Amazon will send you a reminder to renew when it gets down to last issue so I figured I would wait to renew to avoid being charged so early in advance. Two days later I was sent a renewal notice in the mail from SWI directly asking for 43.99. Knowing i saw it for a better price the day before I decided to just renew through Amazon and get it over with. Only to find that the price SHOT UP $25 TO 63.92!

I emailed my complaint about the RIDICULOUS price increase only to be given a BS response. That sealed it, I will not be renewing through Amazon.

Awesome magazine, but currently a RIP OFF to sub through Amazon. Very disappointed.

The good is this is all about Star Wars, and my son loves Star Wars, the movies, the action figures, the Lego toys, the books. The bad is this is not cheap as a subscription and the subsription does not come with many issues per year. We just got our first issue and it came through the USPS of course and in a bag. As with USPS, there is frequently damage (as my friendly mailman once said, "that's free with your mail, you don't get charged extra for that"), the bag had a little tear in the side and the magazine had slight tear in the side. With this price, I wish the publisher placed the magazines in some sort of plastic that cannot tear AND actually give us a full 12 issues for a year subscription instead of the Jan/Feb type deal.

Please click YES if my review have been helpful to you, it will encourage me to continue writing and updating my reviews, and leave a comment if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer if I can be of help.

OK, Could give this one star for one reason and four/five stars for another...so it averages to...three?

I really enjoy the magazine -exclusive interviews, stories and general information I do not find via the various internet news sites. My only complaint about the magazine itself is the spoilers that I read pertaining to the Expanded Universe (comics, novels) -with no given warning within the text of the article of such. I have only recently started to get into the EU and there are often many articles (in one issue!) that I cannot read. I want the story to unfold. . .

Now -my real issue is with Amazon. My magazines always (always!) arrive damaged. It is not my mail carrier -I have other subscriptions, and the magazines arrive in shockingly good condition. I am not sure why this is and am not even sure if the fulfillment is carried out by Amazon. I received one issue that utterly destroyed (to the point where it was hard to keep open to read). I have reported this to Amazon and they always tell me the issue is . . . "sold out?" They did extend my subscription one issue to make up for this.

I was going to re-new through Amazon, despite the damage, just for the savings over Titan Magazines price. Now that amazon is charging cover price with no savings what-so-ever --I see absolutely NO reason to use their service!

This is a great magazine, one that I would definitely subscribe to, but it is too overpriced and not available as a e-book on the kindle store. The only place you can get it electronically is through the newsstand on the iphone and ipad. It's a shame really, it costs 158 rmb (25 usd) on the newsstand for a year of subscription and much more over here. Hopefully when they transition this magazine to a e-book version they will lower the subscription prices.

Air Classics

Air ClassicsAir Classics appeals to those who like vintage WWII aircraft, although other classic aircraft are also covered. The talented Michael O'Leary seems to write and photograph the keystone articles each month, with other writes and photographers contributing. Unfortunately, for many years, this magazine's format has leaned towards larger, less tightly packed print, and more advertisements than meat. I personally had read and collected every single issue since Vol. 1, #1, printed in 1964, and gave the entire collection away to a local aviation museum a few years ago after letting my subscription expire, and haven't read Air Classics since. There are far superior, similarly themed aviation magazines out there to spend your money on, FlyPast and Aeroplane monthly being the two I'd recommend.

I've given Air Classics magazine subscription to my Dad for years. He is a Retired Pilot and he loves the older aircraft. Excellent magazine for those who love these great classics.

Buy Air Classics Now

I have subscribed to this magazine for many years and have seen it change and reinvent itself several times. The 2006-7 version is far superior to its older incarnations. The current version is an aviation history journal and does not cover "current events" in aviation which are reported in duplicate in many US and UK journals. I am also pleased that model aircraft are not covered as there are exellent model journals available. This is a nicely done and well illustrated historical journal and approaches but does not quite reach the excellence of the UK's Aeroplane Monthly.

Read Best Reviews of Air Classics Here

This is a first class magazine. Well worth subscribing to. Amazon is the least expensive place we know of to do so. It covers "classic" aviation at its best.

Want Air Classics Discount?

I agree with the earlier review that there are many better vintage aviation magazines out there. The two mentioned (FlyPast and Aeroplane Monthly) have less usefulness in the U.S. though, because of their primary U.K. and European focus. Air Classics is a good snapshot review of vintage/warbird flying in this country, and its extensive treatment of Post World War II subjects is refreshing with all the emphasis on WWII in other warbird venues. Michael O'Leary does seem talented, but the Magazine suffers from his name being too frequently seen in the articles. Also in the latest issue (Nov. 2006, I think?), O'Leary really goes over the top in criticizing "internet crowd" armchair critics of the "Thunder Over Michigan" air show in August 2006. O'Leary using some non-professional vulgar language in the article that speaks very poorly for the magazine. I hope this is an abberation.

Farm World

Farm WorldGood articles on current farming. Varied articles on different but pertinent topics. Extensive ad section.

I bought a year's subscription to Farm World for my father who owns a u-pick farm and LOVES all things farming. For months afterwards, every time I saw him, he told me how much he loves Farm World. He is one of those people who doesn't babble. He only says something when it means something, so the fact he told me he loved it at all was a compliment. The fact he told me every time he saw me for months told me he REALLY LOVED it. He is getting his subscription renewed this year. At least I know it's something he loves.

This publication is very nice and comes every week. But, it is a bit more technical than I had wanted. I was looking for more hobby type farming and this has more commercial information. It still has a lot of information and I do enjoy reading through the magazine.

The Wall Street Journal (weekend edition)

The Wall Street JournalI renewed my WSJ subscription through Amazon because it saved me over $125 per year. ($249 vs. $376.) Amazon states that you can renew through their service, as well as buy new subscriptions. But it has been a major headache. I started receiving 2 issues. When I called WSJ, they said that you cannot renew through Amazon, that this has to be handled as a 2nd subscription. All they could do is put my first subscription on hold for 12 months until my new subscription runs out. Then restart my first subscription for the 2 months that remain on it. WSJ is inflexible and acts like they don't have anything to do with the subscriptions purchased through Amazon. I would advise anyone else purchasing a renewal to Wall Street Journal through Amazon to wait until you have about 3 weeks left on your subscription before renewing. You may end up missing a few issues before your new subsciption kicks in, but that is better than trying to deal with WSJ's customer service dept.

Love the product there was a problem with "forwarding" the order so it has yet to come.

Buy The Wall Street Journal (weekend edition) Now

If you like to get all the business news of the week consolidated in one publication, the WSJ weekend edition is definitely something to order. It's so "meaty"; my husband and I look forward to getting it each Saturday. And at $1/issue, a great bargain.

Read Best Reviews of The Wall Street Journal (weekend edition) Here

Back in the mid-60s I started investing in the stock market. I was a long way from New York and Wall Street and I needed an accurate news source regarding the business community. I'd buy the Wall Street Journal at the bookstore where I work (San Diego State). It would be a day late, but that was okay. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, it was $.25 a copy and it came in one section.

Finally, I began to subscribe to the WSJ and it then arrived by mail (a day late) and came in two sections. Finally, they started delivering it here in San Diego and then I got it on the day of printing, although the news could still be a little old. No problem. The WSJ has grown quite a bit. It used to be strictly M-F business news and had no photos. Now, it's a full-spectrum newspaper and even has colored photos. It's still strongly oriented toward business, I should add. The WSJ used to be one section only and now it is three or four sections and has a weekend issue on Saturday.

I like the Journal. The news is accurate and reliable. It's not prone to fads. People say it's conservative, but I find it to be non-biased in it's news. It tends to lean Republican in it's editorial content but the bias there is acceptable to me. It's an expensive newspaper, but it's worth it.

Handguns (1-year auto-renewal)

HandgunsI bought my first gun, a Beretta 92, in May 1999 in response to the Columbine tragedy. It was a "silent protest" against the heartless anti-gun political opportunists who were exploiting the victims during the aftermath, which made me sick & disgusted. It wasn't long after that first purchase when I began a subscription to "Handguns" magazine. I was a subscriber for 10 years until a couple months ago when I decided not to renew my subscription for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that I live in California, home of the "certified safe by the state" approved roster of handguns for sale, which prohibits most new models from being sold in CA unless they're bastardized to meet state requirements.

Well, you don't subscribe to a magazine for 10 years if it's crappy, right? This is a great magazine, and all about handguns. It contains the usual articles you would expect about new models and such, plus firing line reports for several models in each issue, but it also contains ancillary topics such as tactics, gun rights, ammunition, new accessory items on the market, nostalgic reviews of classic handguns, etc. It's a bi-monthly publication from the publishers of "Guns & Ammo", which of course is the gold standard by which all other shooting publications are judged. I believe "Handguns" carries on the tradition of G&A nicely. This magazine isn't as thick as its main competitor (American Handgunner), but I prefer "Handguns" because they stick to business, while AH seems to be run by a bunch of narcisistic egomaniacs who use their magazine as a forum for patting themselves on the back. I think "Handguns" also has a better command of English grammar than AH and is easier to read, though they're still a far cry from perfect in that regard. However, AH has a handgun giveaway contest in each issue, which "Handguns" does not, so props to AH for that.

If I had to criticize anything in "Handguns", it would be the gun rights column. At times--not very often, but sometimes--the author (Don B. Kates) seems like he's out in left field, out of touch with reality. He actually stated, for example, that now that the Democrats are in control of Congress again after 12 years, the Obama administration would _not_ attack gun rights because they had more important issues on their agenda; yet Obama is underhandedly trying to ban guns through the back door, via proposed "anti gun trafficking" treaties with the UN and other unscrupulous means (including the threat of doing so through Executive Order!). Assinine statements like that from a bona fide gun rights expert and legal authority makes you wonder what goes through his head sometimes.

Another criticism of "Handguns" is that they don't seem to review very many "budget" guns in their magazine. Not surprising, I suppose, because they do have to appease their big-buck advertisers, right? Which is also why you'll seldom (if ever) find a bad review of a model from a big-name manufacturer. Regardless, I'd like to see this publication become monthly again (they tried for a time), but I suppose it's kind of difficult to fill the pages on a monthly basis. [So take note: your 1yr subscription is for 6 issues only, not 12.]

Nevertheless, as I said, this is a wonderful publication for the handgun enthusiast. I've only missed one issue since cancelling my subscription, and honestly I already miss it! I predict I'll break down and resubscribe before the year's end.

As a Certified Glock Armorer who travels the Gun Show circuit, I like this magazine because it keeps me up to date on the other brands of guns and what they are offering. I may not work on other brands, but I can at least carry on a somewhat informed conversation with customers when they ask me about features of a gun other than Glock. I also enjoy the section on new styles of ammunition for self defense/home defense. I'm always open to new ideas but will be hard pressed to change from my current carry ammo.

Overall, a good publication.

Buy Handguns (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I enjoy reading the reviews. The editors go into great detail on the +/of the products. The only negative I have is that since it is a Guns & Ammo magazine; the articles between their Handguns mag and their primary G&A mag often duplicate reviews of the same product. If you are just getting Handguns mag, you will not be disappointed.
