Science News (1-year auto-renewal)

Science NewsGood quick scan of what's new in the sciences. I've subscribed for over 10 years It use to be a 16 page weekly that had short concise pithy summaries of the latest news in science with reference to original source. It was clearly the best summary for busy folk or those just preferring a quick titillating overview. In recent years they switched to a 32 page format every two weeks. At the same time the article quality seemed slip a bit getting more verbose and longer. The genre of the adds also changed. I'm guessing in response to economic pressures. In frustration, I looked for a replacement, but Science News is still the best broad field science overview I have found including science blogs available via Kindle. Most articles are still short at a paragraph or two to half a page with one or two longer feature articles. Relevant color photo graphs are also included. If you are at all interested, it is worth a try. I find articles that relate to work (Medical device R&D), that my wife, kids, friends and I discuss, and that relate to various books I'm reading. Besides entertaining for those interested in learning, I find it a nidus of serendipity.

EDIT 21 Jan 2013: I would advise avoiding subscribing to the print version through here, since it is through a third party subscription clearinghouse called "Synapse," and I never received my subscription. Furthermore, the entire magazine is available for online viewing to anyone with a net connection at "science news dot org."

EDIT 20 Nov 2012: First of all, if one wants a subscription to this publication, print may provide the best value overall for what is provided, if purchasing, and personally, having evaluated both the print and Kindle versions, I believe the print version is much better. One of the reasons is that color graphics are a necessity in some cases to make sense of some charts and pictures. I only evaluated the b/w standard Kindle version, so have no idea how it is on Kindle Fire.

Science News is put out by the Society for Science & the Public. As far as the nature of Science News, it is a good quality way to keep up with updates in various fields, but it does not go into tremendous depth, and the articles are not written by scientists. Scientific American has articles written by scientists through more than half the magazine, each article can be 6-8 pages long, and may be more in depth than many would like, though I personally like reading articles written by the actual scientists.

For this reason, I would suggest that Science News is better for the layman that wants to just keep a light touch on various scientific fields, and perhaps even for the scientist that wants to keep just as light a touch on fields not their own. Though the short articles are not written by scientists, the writers get information from scientists and many science journals.

The publication is issued every two weeks now, rather than the former weekly rate it had for many years. With the print publication, one gets access to the publication online, can access it wherever there is internet access, and this includes years of past issues.

I have a hard time deciding which is better between Science News and Scientific American. If I did not have the preference for reading longer articles written frequently by scientists, I would probably choose this one instead.

I have been reading this magazine for more than 30 years. It was much better when it came as a short weekly. The new longer bi-weekly version is more difficult to read and does not hold my atention like the weekly did. But I continue to subscribbe. It would be great if Amazon could get them to come out with a Kindle version. How about it, Amazon?

I really like th ability to have a quick survey I can go through in one sitting to hear what is going on in the world of science. Not much depth, but it takes me through topics I would not usually seek out so I learn about things I would not ordinarily encounter.

As an ecologist, this is a light but good review of topics of general interest to the scientist and non-scientist.

Import Tuner

Import TunerThe product is okay, but the response from Import Tuner Mag has been VERY, VERY slow. Do not plan on renewing subscription again!

This is a great magazine for any import car lover. There is a lot of good information in these magazines. My husband likes seeing all the different cars and it inspires him to continue fixing up his own. As far as the shipping goes, I've only recieved a magazine in a protective covering when they have other loose materials. Any damage is from the postal services, and the turn around time is typical magazine subscription time8-12 weeks. We are very pleased with the magazine and can't wait for the next issue!

I recently subscribed to the magazine as a gift for my boyfriend. He's been looking out for it in the mail, when he finally received it, he got the March and April issue already..yay, right? NO!...the ones that he got were all ripped and torn...all the sides of about the first 5 and last 5 pages because they were not in any type of protective cover! So disappointing...I hope that maybe the next ones won't be in such a bad condition.

The magazine itself is a great magazine. Only thing is, I know this because of reading it at a book store. I gifted a subscription to my boyfriend in Nov. 2011 and have yet to receive an issue. Amazon.com was very helpful in trying to help me find out the issue but even though the address was correct and we checked with the mailing service, we still haven't received an issue. Amazon is issuing me a refund.

Preaching

PreachingPreaching is both an art and a science. It is an art in the sense that some people have a gift for it and some people do not. It is a science because poor preachers can become good and good preachers can become great if they will learn certain skills.

This magazine contains helpful articles that will improve anyone's preaching. It has manuscripts of great sermons. It also has ads for resources from third parties that can be used to improve one's study skills and preaching abilities.

Thomas & Friends

Thomas & FriendsMy 4 year old, according to my wife, can't put this one down. Ever since the stories started coming, it has been non stop reading. This is the type of books that I want for my children.

My son loves this. But a little pricey compared to the other more substantial mags like Ranger Rick.

I bought this as a gift for my 3 year old nephew. He loves it and is very excited that it comes in the mail for him. It has a lot of great content. It's worth the high price for any young Thomas fan.

My son is still a Thomas fanatic at age 6, and he adores this magazine. He spends several hours with it when it arrives every month, and he keeps old copies on his book shelf to thumb through while he's anxiously awaing the next publication. The magazine is perfect for the emerging reader.

My special favorite issues identify the Top Docs and Top Dentists within the area. I've used those resources to pick my medical providers out of the 'sea of applicants,' found some wonderful providers, and never regretted it.

Folk Magazine

Folk MagazineMagazine improving each issue, but purchased a subscription and having problems receiving issues. Also, magazine has offered some great low cost specials recently and it's frustrating after paying full price.

FOLK magazine's website looked so wonderful that I subscribed to the print magazine at the beginning of December, 2012. FOLK magazine appears to be the darling of many bloggers and you rarely if ever find any complaints on the Facebook page.

The Winter issue was delayed by 4 weeks but I did finally receive it, and it was quite nice but I would rate it at about 3 stars -pretty pictures but not much content. And at only 4 issues per year, it is expensive considering, as I said, that the content is rather thin.

The Spring issue, though, I have never received. I have contacted FOLK magazine's customer service email four (4) separate times in the last six (6) weeks but have never received a response. My emails started out very kind and polite, enquirying as to the problem. The latest one that I sent though was anything but kind. I've also posted comments on their Facebook page asking where my Spring issue might be, but rather than respond to me, they delete my comments. If I do not hear from them soon, I will post a complaint on the Better Business Bureau website.

Yes, the magazine looks very pretty but if you subscribe please be aware that you may need to repeatedly email them in order to actually receive the issues.

Dental Economics

Dental Economics"Dental Economics" is an excellent resource for dental practices. The magazine deals mostly with the business end of dentistry with recent articles like "Money Smart, 'Background and Credit Checks,'" "Flourishing in Changing Times," and "Dental Insurance, 'Benefits for Restorative Procedures.'" In addition to these more business-oriented articles, the magazine runs several general articles per issue designed for dentists in all practices. These run from useful articles for new dentists ("The New Dentist, 'Protect Yourself!'") to a fascinating exploration of the National Museum of Dentistry (located at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, site of the world's first dental school) which is extraordinary in scope. I was particularly interested to note that the museum now has traveling exhibits, which will certainly improve the image of dentistry throughout the country. The article in the March 2006 issue touched on the traveling exhibit titled "Branches, Bristles, and Batteries: Toothbrushes Through Time" which began a three year tour in 2002. The magazine also gave excellent coverage to permanent exhibitions such as "Saliva: A Remarkable Fluid" which was done in conjunction with the human genome project. This is the type of high profile exposure that can really aid the dental care giving profession, and I am delighted at the quality of reporting in "Dental Economics."

There are numerous advertisements in the magazine, but all are relevant and most dentists will find them unobtrusive and in some cases helpful. The editorials are thoughtful and well written. Penwell publishers can be justifiably proud of this magazine and the more advertisement-oriented sister publication "Dental Equipment and Materials" which it also publishes.

All dental professionals will benefit from reading "Dental Economics" and I recommend it to dentists, hygienists, and other parties interested in modern dentistry.
