Latina Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Latina MagazineI don't think it's fair to make Latina magazine be the be-all, end-all magazine for American Latinas. It's not like we throw a fit when Cosmopolitan perpetuates "female" stereotypes. I understand that for minorities, it would be nice to hold mainstream media to a higher standard, but sometimes, don't you just want to kick back on the couch and not stress?

For those moments of kicking back, not stressing, and not finding fault with everything around me, I love reading Latina magazine. Thoughtful articles and first-person essays, easy recipes, and great trends.

And, I'm not even Latina -I'm Asian-American. And I have to say, reading this magazine has made me appreciate just that much more how we are all sisters in this world, just trying to find happiness, love, and a hot pair of shoes.

This is one of the best magazines I've ever read. It's not full of ads. It has articles on topics which interest me. It helps me to brush up on my Spanish. The clothing and makeup featured are suitable to the everyday woman. Unlike other magazines, you won't see clothes that are only suitable on a runway and that aren't really affordable. What I love is that they always tell you where an item can be found and the cost of the item on the same page. You don't have to root through ridiculously small print in the back of the magazine to find out where you can locate the clothes or makeup. Because Latin women come in all shades, they give makeup tips which can be used by everyone. I'm an African American woman who has had subscriptions to Elle and to Honey Magazine. I have found Latina to be far more helpful and to have better fashions.

I received this magazine as a reward for taking surveys, so I am not actually paying for the subscription I have. However, I don't regret picking it as the reward. I will say this: I do believe Latina Magazine to be an acquired taste. It won't be for every Latina, nor will it be for every one, in general. At most, it's just a fun magazine to read when you have some time to kill. There are some pretty heartfelt stories in some of the issues as well and hey, even some great recipes in them and who could go wrong with that?

This magazine has good stories for anyone. Livng in a global economic society means thinking with a multicultural lens. This magazine gives you some insight into Latino culture.

I read a lot of reviews that blasted this magazine for its use of "Spanglish" because it makes those of us who speak "Spanglish" look badly. I'm not ashamed of my use of "Spanglish" and I think it's sad that Latinas judge each other like this. Not all of us grew up immersed in the Spanish language and thus, are not fluent.

I really enjoy receiving the magazine, it's taught me a lot about being proud of my Mexican heritage and even this morning, I was sharing it with my almost 13-year old son. Pitbull was in this month's issue and my son loves Pitbull and his music. We also looked through the magazine and I had him trying to translate some of the ads and articles. My son is going to grow up speaking "Spanglish" like me.

Recently, the magazine had an article about being fluent or not; not being fluent doesn't make me any less Mexican or any less proud. I'm glad that this magazine is here for Latinas like me.

I would definitely recommend this to Latinas all over!

Pilot Getaways

Pilot GetawaysThis magazine, has my interest. But more than that, it

has my wifes' interest. We can fly to destinations, she

can fish, or shop, or just kick back and enjoy the scenery,

and I can enjoy her company and fly to my hearts' content.

What more can I say! The reason I didn't give it 5 stars

is that some magazine content didn't interest me, and the

cost factor.Only four times a year. $$

ShopSmart (1-year auto-renewal)

ShopSmartI consider this magazine to be the feminine version of Consumer Reports. The articles are condensed versions of most that can be found in the regular Consumer Reports mag as well as the website. But these are mostly "female" related items, bras, saving at the grocery, purses, wines, etc. The colors are flashy and eye catching whereas the Consumer Reports magazine itself is more utilitarian.

I really like this magazine because it's shorter to the point articles, I don't have to search long lists to find the top 3 of something. This magazine gives the best recommendations as well as those not recommended. They've left out most of the dirty details to get to that point. The magazine also covers stories about the top 10 tips to save at the grocery, the top 10 websites that save you money, cleaning products you can't live without, the best little black dress and on and on.

They also have articles about single females' necessary household tools, and gives the best recommendations for power/hand tools for women. So that's why I'm saying it's meant for women mostly rather than guys.

It is expensive for 6 issues but in one purchase you could save $20, so to me the magazine is worth the cost. If you want, just get the online consumer reports, website only access and you'd have the best of both worlds.

The price listed is $22.95 for 12 months (6 issues). But the magazine is published 10 times a year and the publisher is assigning expirations based on six issues (approx. seven months). This makes the cost per year $42 (considerably more than a year on Consumer Reports at $29).

The magazine itself is fine (three stars) but the dishonest advertising is completely unacceptable.

Also, they seem to be charging a 30% premium to edit CR for a "feminine" audience.

Buy ShopSmart (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I've bought the magazine a few times now at the newsstand, and I like the content and layout. However, much like its parent company's Consumer Reports, it is expensive for what it is. Six issues for $23? Not too mention, I have to take even more issue with that price.

If you look at the magazine's website you'll see that it is actually $18 for six issues and $4.95 for shipping and handling.

I recommend that you subscribe to Consumer Reports OR ShopSmart, but not both. Here's why:

Since ShopSmart is published by Consumer Reports, I knew I could count on reliable reviews and ratings, no outside advertising, and advice that would save me money. I've subscribed to Consumer Reports for years, and knew what to expect. ShopSmart follows in the footsteps of Consumer Reports in all of these respects.

What really bothers me, though, is the amount of duplication between the two magazines. The January 2011 issue of ShopSmart contained the following, all of which appeared in the January 2011 issue of Consumer Reports:

1. Rating the best cookware sets

2. Rating the best frozen pizzas

3. An article on where sugar is "hidden" in various foods.

4. A discussion about the best all purpose cleaner

5. A review of the Duracell MyGrid charger (including the exact same accompanying photo in both magazines)

6. An article about the dangers of mercury in tuna fish

7. An article about the dangers of shattering glass bakeware

And more...and this is pretty much par for the course each month. I noticed this much overlap in a free trial issue, but thought it was an anomaly...not their standard operating procedure.

It is my opinion that the same organization I trust for their reviews is taking advantage of my trust by making two magazines with so much duplicate content. I will continue to subscribe to Consumer Reports, but I will NOT be renewing my ShopSmart subscription unless it stops duplicating so much of Consumer Reports.

Want ShopSmart (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

I have subscribed to "Consumer Reports" for years as I like their unbiased reviews and policy of not accepting advertising revenue. I still subscribe to "Consumer Reports" and have decided to subscribe to "ShopSmart" as well, as it retains the unbiased, no advertising attributes of "Consumer Reports" and focuses on making daily purchasing decisions without any hype or gimmicks.

"Consumer Reports" is extremely useful, but can be quite tedious and detailed, particularly when dealing with electronics or durable goods. "ShopSmart" retains the same general editorial tone, but is much more concise. The individual articles are informative but rather brief, focusing more on value choices versus technical minutiae: of the two it is the more readable magazine by far.

While I still consider "Consumer Reports" as the gold standard for product evaluation and differentiation, "ShopSmart" provides useful, easy to apply information in a highly readable package.

Kiplinger's Retirement Report

Kiplinger's Retirement ReportI first looked at the sample report online. It was great -lots of useful information to prepare for retirement, including some very good investment ideas. So I subscribed, and have now received several issues. There are sometimes some good information, but for the most part it is worthless. For example, in the January 2011 isue, 4 out of 20 pages was dedicated to turbulent times for long term care insurance that read more like a news article than true advice for what I should do. Another 4 pages were full page ads for banks, investment products, etc. The rest is what I would call useless fluff. By the way, Kiplinger, I am paying for this report -why so many ads? Anyhow, There is usually some semi-useful info in the report, but definitely not worth the cost.

This is one of the best retirement compilations I have come across. Many good ideas. Just one, idea for part time work including email address for call center work. So many retirement magazines focus only on how to save for retirement, not on lifestyle based on the amount of money you really do have at t the end. Highly recommend

I've always been pleased with the depth and coverage of Kiplinger magazine and reports. However, this time I'm a little disappointed.

The Retirement Report costs significantly more than the magazine but didn't seem to give me an appropriate value. True, is that I've only reviewed one issue and they may have had the summer doldrums, so before you put your money down look for an issue you can study to see if it covers what you want it to... unfortunately I didn't take my own advice... shame on me.

This is a very useful publication for those near or at retirement. The information is up to date, helpfull and informative.

Want Kiplinger's Retirement Report Discount?

I subscribed to Kiplinger's Retirement Report several years ago, but decided to give it a try again. The magazine, if that's what you call a 20 page publication with 4 pages devoted to one page ads, is written for individuals who are in or near "the end of life" stage. The articles deal with conserving the money you have, provide interest rates that aren't even close to the highest insured rates available. They never give ideas for travel or things to do outside of your home or with grandchildren. The best and only section I ever got any thing from was the questions asked by readers section and that is kept to one page. I guess the Editors feel there is no point in expanding the one good section this brochure does have. I would recommend you save your money and Not subscribe to this publication. I suggest, instead, you subscribe to a real magazine with information you can use every month Kiplinger's Personal Finance a much superior publication for half the price.

Preaching

PreachingPreaching is both an art and a science. It is an art in the sense that some people have a gift for it and some people do not. It is a science because poor preachers can become good and good preachers can become great if they will learn certain skills.

This magazine contains helpful articles that will improve anyone's preaching. It has manuscripts of great sermons. It also has ads for resources from third parties that can be used to improve one's study skills and preaching abilities.

Shotgun News (1-year auto-renewal)

Shotgun NewsIf you love guns, this is the publication for you! This is not a glossy photo spread magazine, its more of a newspaper type 'classified ads' publication. Lists pages and pages of every conceivable type of firearm for sale, at dealer (FFL) prices. You will comb the pages for hours and never get bored. Use it to find what you want, and then contact your local FFL dealer to get it slightly above wholesale cost. Save big bucks over inflated sporting goods store price!

I have purchased many issues over the years and hope to receive a subscription for christmas. I have found it to be a very complete resource for firearms as well as many other military surplus and survival based products. The classifieds are arranged for easy use and the articles are very informative.Shotgun News

SN is an odd publication. It is a large-format shopping magazine like the old Computer Shopper magazine used to be, but it also has great articles. There are vendors that sell everything related to this hobby. So, you can dig thru it looking for that odd item, or you can see what is brand new to the market and what it will cost you to get your hands on one. In the past few years, SN has really picked up its feature articles too. They contain really great, informative, articles about subjects that I appreciate including DIY projects, history, and collectibles. This is not like any of the other mags that mostly show the latest and greatest with super-tech photographs and reviews. It is great for those who are building collections, buying&selling, and keeping a finger on pulse of their industy or hobby. It is also a great place to look for Curio & Relics, military surplus arms, and militaria that being imported/re-imported. So, it is unique amoung other magazines, but it is a great one to keep around.

SHOTGUN NEWS has been around for decades now. If you're interested in firearms, militaria, collecting, reloading, or simply need some ammo and a sling for your Japanese Type 38 infantry rifle, you've got a pretty good chance of finding it in SHOTGUN NEWS.

It also includes shotguns, rifles, pistols, revolvers, black powder arms and kits from which you can build your own. After you get that Model 1860 Springfield together, you can find a socket bayonet and forage cap in SHOTGUN NEWS.

Most modern firearms require you to make the purchase through an FFL dealer in your community. Most such dealers charge a small fee for taking delivery, but you can save a significant amount of money purchasing from dealers who advertise in SHOTGUN NEWS. Some of the arms are deeply discounted at certain times of the year.

SHOTGUN NEWS also includes some great articles on guns, ammunition, collecting and market trends. It's like a big classified section with a lot of notations, comments and a few articles.

I've always enjoyed SHOTGUN NEWS and I gave it five stars. If you're a shooter, collector, hunter, outdoorsman, military historian, re-enactor, or living history enthusiast, you'll love SHOTGUN NEWS.
