BBC Gardeners World

The BBC Gardeners World magazine is the best gardening magazine that I have ever seen. I receive at least 10 other gardening magazines (most are monthly) and I am most impressed with the Gardeners World. There are many beautiful photos and great articles by a number of well-respected gardeners. They touch on a lot of different areas of gardening, i.e. composting, soil quality, new plant selections, before and after pictures of gardens, make it yourself garden projects, and much more. It is more pricey than other magazines (mostly related to the air shipment) but it is a definite treat for yourself or a very special gift for someone who wouldn't spend the money on themselves.

This is an excellent magazine. It provides everything a knowledgeable gardner wants. It never talks down to you with simplistic advice. Illustrations are top notch and the photos are terrific.

However, the way in which Amazon handled my subscription was really unacceptable. My prior subscription ran out on 4/1/10. I called on 4/1/10 to alert them to that fact and to renew my subscription. I was assured multiple times by staff at Amazon that my subscription would not be interupted. Then when I received the order confirmation I saw that the issues would not be coming until August. I again called to complain and was told that the order had been received and I should be receiving it shortly. I then posted a complaint on the site, but it wasn't able to send properly due to Amazon site problems.

Now, I will have to wait until (at least) August when the garden season is over to start getting the magazine I paid for in full on 4/1/10. What's more frustrating is that I was repeatedly assured by Amazon that there would be no interruption in the magazine. Next time, I'll order direct from BBC. Very frustrating experience.

Gardeners World has been a BBC televised gardening show for more than 40 years and they know gardening. Magazine has articles, tips, and projects as well as lots of great pictures. Maybe a bit pricey to get in the US, but well worth the money!

This magazine is superb, but I ordered from magazine "express" (hah!) in November and no first issue by end of April....and the company didnt respond to my query after 1 week. Customers should not have to wait 5 months for a magazine, then a week or more for comment from the company. I would recommend ordering direct from BBC Magazines in the UK..its about the same cost, and the magaziens arrive within 1 month

Ever since I was a young child, I remember my parents subscribing to the STERN magazine, and I am continuing the tradition. Now that I live in the USA, it seems even more important for me to keep up with the current events that are taking place in Germany, as well as learning about the way that they view things that are happening around the globe, and how they view politics in the US.

This magazine provides not only political information, but also covers a variety of current topics that range from entertainment, over science, to history. I especially enjoy the diversity within the magazine, and the open minds with which the reporters approach foreign countries, cultures, and practices. The pictures in this magazine are absolutely stunning, even though the cover pictures are sometimes a little bit too "steamy" for American taste. However, it is always very refreshing to pick up the newest issue each week, and compare it to what the media in the US is providing us with.

Besides my family and friends from Germany, the STERN magazine remains my strongest link to German politics, economy, culture, perspectives, etc.

STERN and I are old friends, my parents were subscribers for years and I always enjoyed the risqué photos appearing in STERN from a bygone era during my impressionable years. I recently subscribed to keep up my German language skills and the weekly issues are overwhelming me. But I skip the interior politics of Germany and read their take on our politics. Foreign media have a fresh outlook on our situation which, unfortunately for us is not available in our domestic media, biased as it is. They have more photos than any other source and I could probably spend a whole day if I wanted to look at them all. They cover news from around the world and must have their photographers everywhere. The recent uprising in Iran was covered to a point where they displayed the murder of that unfortunate, beautiful, young woman as she lay dying on the street while several men tried to save her. Very strong stuff, but Stern doesn't pull any punches. They cover much more including movies and the latest music releases (some from the United States) with reviews. Human interest stories covered sex around the world with lots of color photos. A recent delightful shocker was their coverage of the shaving of body hair among German females and males. Use your imagination! No, use it harder, I guess politically incorrect doesn't address this issue. Enjoy.

Latina Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

I don't think it's fair to make Latina magazine be the be-all, end-all magazine for American Latinas. It's not like we throw a fit when Cosmopolitan perpetuates "female" stereotypes. I understand that for minorities, it would be nice to hold mainstream media to a higher standard, but sometimes, don't you just want to kick back on the couch and not stress?

For those moments of kicking back, not stressing, and not finding fault with everything around me, I love reading Latina magazine. Thoughtful articles and first-person essays, easy recipes, and great trends.

And, I'm not even Latina -I'm Asian-American. And I have to say, reading this magazine has made me appreciate just that much more how we are all sisters in this world, just trying to find happiness, love, and a hot pair of shoes.

This is one of the best magazines I've ever read. It's not full of ads. It has articles on topics which interest me. It helps me to brush up on my Spanish. The clothing and makeup featured are suitable to the everyday woman. Unlike other magazines, you won't see clothes that are only suitable on a runway and that aren't really affordable. What I love is that they always tell you where an item can be found and the cost of the item on the same page. You don't have to root through ridiculously small print in the back of the magazine to find out where you can locate the clothes or makeup. Because Latin women come in all shades, they give makeup tips which can be used by everyone. I'm an African American woman who has had subscriptions to Elle and to Honey Magazine. I have found Latina to be far more helpful and to have better fashions.

I received this magazine as a reward for taking surveys, so I am not actually paying for the subscription I have. However, I don't regret picking it as the reward. I will say this: I do believe Latina Magazine to be an acquired taste. It won't be for every Latina, nor will it be for every one, in general. At most, it's just a fun magazine to read when you have some time to kill. There are some pretty heartfelt stories in some of the issues as well and hey, even some great recipes in them and who could go wrong with that?

I read a lot of reviews that blasted this magazine for its use of "Spanglish" because it makes those of us who speak "Spanglish" look badly. I'm not ashamed of my use of "Spanglish" and I think it's sad that Latinas judge each other like this. Not all of us grew up immersed in the Spanish language and thus, are not fluent.

I really enjoy receiving the magazine, it's taught me a lot about being proud of my Mexican heritage and even this morning, I was sharing it with my almost 13-year old son. Pitbull was in this month's issue and my son loves Pitbull and his music. We also looked through the magazine and I had him trying to translate some of the ads and articles. My son is going to grow up speaking "Spanglish" like me.

Recently, the magazine had an article about being fluent or not; not being fluent doesn't make me any less Mexican or any less proud. I'm glad that this magazine is here for Latinas like me.

I would definitely recommend this to Latinas all over!

Cottage Life

We LOVE this magazine, it is practical, humorous, full of useful info, and scaled to normal living, not decorator hype. Published in Canada, it seems to have a tone of simplicity and common sense. It is geared to the camp or cottage owner and great for off-season reading, when you want to stay psyched about the camp until you can get back there. One great article walked us through the entire "opening up" procedure, in exhaustive but hilarious detail.

This magazine if great for Cabin/Cottage living and life on the water. My husband and I get lots of useful information out of this magazine and save back issues for years. However,we cannot understand why the subscription rate is so high. If the subscription rate were 1/2 as much we'd probably subsribe for many years, but have a hard time with the approximately $7 per issue (U.S. customers). It seems like a highway robbery. Granted it's by far the best cabin/cottage magazine out there, as opposed to Coastal Living or others that seem geared to the Million dollar vacation homes, whereas this one seems to touch all home styles and true seasonal cottages/cabins, etc. We wish there was something so good on the U.S. side of the border.

On any list of pure English-language business reportage, BARRON'S would figure in the top ten. This newspaper-style weekly compiles more numbers than just about any other publication.

Though 'fluff' is not a word commonly associated with the Wall Street Journal, think of BARRON'S as 'WSJ without the fluff'. That's how focused it is.

I recently switched my subscription from the Wall Street Journal to Barron's simplyl because I could not keep up with the Journal. I would see piles and piles of papers that I had yet to get to and my recycle bin got fuller and fuller. I decided that I would switch to a weekly financial periodical and I have to say that I have enjoyed Barron's immensley.

The editorial articles are well written and have an excellent perspective on the previous weeks financial news along with an outlook for what is ahead. You Market Labratory which is essentially stock/bond prices for the week is a bit large but has information that I can't find elsewhere. I don't rely on that information since access to the web makes it easy to have that info with one click.

Ever since switching I have been actually able to get through each issue every week. It is a nice feeling to not have it piled up everywhere. The biggest dissadvantage is that it is a review of a whole week reather than an each day summation. That is to be expected however since it only gets to my mailbox every Sat morning. If you are thinking about switching because you just don't have the time but want your dose of financial insight in hard copy, then definately switch to Barron's

I understand that the average net worth of a Barron's subscriber is just under three million dollars. I read Barron's for the same reason I read CIO magazine. I want to know what the leaders are reading. I do use the articles in Barron's as investment leads. I recently read about the good prospects of a company and took a small position in it and have been rewarded by a 19% gain in under three months. This is the third time in a year I have had such results with a Barron's pick. I suggest you give it a try by reading a issue on the Sunday it is available and watch any company's stock that they praise for a week and see how you would have done.

Also it is just excellent quality writing and entertaining.

I used to get this magazine. Don't really remember how many years I did. I let my subscription expire for several reasons, not the fault of the magazine. I love to vacation in Montana (would love to live there). I am about to re-up because I love this magazine. Especially the articles involving the little towns to visit. This is by far the most complete resource for the hot glass artist. Plenty of technical info and eye candy. Keep it goin!!!

This magazine is great, but has little for beginning or intermediate beginners. Except for the 'Wow!' factor, of course. Articles are well written, good info on hot glass gatherings and education, photos are amazing eye-candy that can almost have you dabbing the drool off your chin. They try hard to make sure boro workers are shown making things other than pipes, which is nice, although they do include that art form as well. The soda-lime/soft glass workers are well represented too: beads, sculpture, tips, tutorials nothing that a beginner could manage, but education starts somewhere, as does inspiration. I have yet to show magazine to anyone w/o several 'Wow' responses to the works shown in the photos, even those who haven't the foggiest what's involved in making the pieces.

Video Watchdog

Video Watchdog have been around for years and continue to produce a top quality home video magazine. Editor Tim Lucas has assembled an impressive staff of writers that are very knowledgable and clearly do their home work. There are some amazing in-depth reviews and feature articles that focus primarily on the horror and fantasy genres.

In addition, they also have a book review column that I've used numerous times to buy film books and a soundtrack column that covers obscure, hard-to-find albums as well as mainstream stuff -very good!

This is one of the few magazines I subscribe to and actually read cover-to-cover. High recommended!

If you REALLY love film (from ALL decades) and of ALL manner , treat youself to this awesome , highly respected and award strewn glossy , digest magazine . It comes to you six times a yr and is a TRUE page turner (even if you think you're not initially interested in a given article) . It's THAT well written . Brilliant .

I've been buying "Video Watchdog" on and off for at least 15 years; in the past year I've finally succumbed to the lure of it completely and I'm glad I have. Every issue of this slick digest is a treasure-trove of serious, thoughtful (but never humorless or dry) reviewing, criticism and discussion about the wonderful worlds of science fiction, fantasy, and horror filmmaking as it appears on home video first on VHS and laserdisc, then on DVD, now increasingly on Blu-ray. Editor and regular writer Tim Lucas has an obsessive, geeky level of detail at his command and expects the same out of others on his staff. Films are typically reviewed for both technical merits both audio and video discussed in enough detail for most technophiles but simply enough for those of us with less interest in such things and for their qualities as art, though in the case of very famous films like, say, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY in its recent Blu-ray release the technical considerations usually are the bulk of the piece.

The format typically offers "Dog Bytes" short reviews of 200-500 words over a dozen pages or so at the beginning of the magazine and longer "DVDs" reviews ranging from about 700-2000 words near the end; Lucas also writes a 1-page editorial that often waxes philosophical or broadly political, there are book and CD (movie music usually) reviews, and in the last few years writer Ramsey Campbell has had a column that he usually devotes to something really, really obscure. Then there is the feature article, a lengthy review or interview, often in roundtable form; recent examples have been a long discussion of Dario Argento's MOTHER OF TEARS and an interview with Roger Corman about the Edgar Alan Poe adaptations he made in the 1960s.

Lest you say "but I'm not much interested in those kinds of films", the Watchdog often covers film noir, spaghetti and other westerns, classic cartoons and anime, and works of various major directors who have at least a little connection to weirdness and fantasy. You might not ever find a John Ford cover feature, but Welles, Bergman, Fellini, Tarkovsky or Godard aren't out of the question.

In short, my very favorite film magazine, and one of the few magazines I've ever read regularly cover-to-cover for years, and that has never diminished in quality.

This is one of the top publications that covers films and books on the horror/sci-fi genre. It continues to sort out and dig up the new releases of vintage, classic genre films. There are great reviews and evaluations about the release missing footage, tracks, etc., anything that could detract from the pleasure of viewing. The mag has an exceptional group of writers, reviewers, etal that keep the fan in mind. The issues remain great references and will remain in your collection for many years to come. If you haven't tried Watchdog do yourself a favor and pick up the next copy at your newstand/bookstore.

Style at Home

I wrote a review of this magazine several years ago, but now it's gone so I am writing another! Yes, this magazine is expensive for residents of the United States, but it is such an excellent magazine for people who love decorating ideas! The current economy has hurt the magazine industry and some of the better home decorating magazines are no longer being published.

This Canadian magazine has so many great ideas for decorating. Sorry, Better Homes and Gardens magazine is okay, but has way too many ads in it. I don't want a doll that looks just like a real baby ( a frequent ad ), I just want to look at ideas. If you are one of those people who look forward to the arrival of your latest Pottery Barn catalog, then you should get this magazine.

I used to live in Canada and was a loyal customer of Style at Home. After our return to the States, I was so disappointed to find my former favorite American shelter magazines had started giving too much attention to perfectly designed spaces. That's all they ever featured. I was very glad to find out I could order Style at Home from Amazon. Yes, there are some designer pages and ads for some shops in Canadabut I still come away with more achieveable ideas for my own home from this publication than any american shelter magazine I used to get. They give you much more confidence than the others, and less pressure to hold your house up to designer efforts.

I rehab and resell homes and have found this magazine to be consistently among the best for fresh clean decorating ideas. Yes, the cost of the subscription is high due to the import from Canada. However, it's worth every penny. When you think about it, purchasing one off magazines from a retail store will cost you about the same in a year and this magazine is better and will show up in your mail box.
