Backyard Bird Newsletter

Backyard Bird NewsletterBackyard Bird Newsletter (BBN) is the companion piece to the excellent Bird Watchers Digest (BWD) that I have subscribed too for years. It is offered every other month that BWD isn't published. I picked up a subscription to it my first year with BWD for I thought it would be nice to receive something every month. Unfortunately unlike BWD which is an excellent publication for birders of all interests and levels, (see my review of it at the link) I cannot recommend the companion newsletter. Its a very thin, (about 8 to 10 pages) pamphlet style publication that carries as many ads in it as helpful and interesting articles. I never spent more than 10 minutes thumbing through it before tossing it out each month. I let my subscription to it lapse after the first year. It is definitely not worth $16 for six issues to be sure. Subscribe to BWD and sign up for their free email newsletter that is loaded with helpful hints and article highlights. And forget this option. Bird Watchers Digest

I just received my first edition yesterday. I think it did have some good infromation. I thought I was getting a magazine not a news letter other wise it was OK.

Buy Backyard Bird Newsletter Now

I've subscribed to this newsletter for a few years but this newsletter is just that even has newsletter in the title so don't think it's a magazine. It's full of interesting information about bird species, gardening for birds, and more. It's not a glossy magazine to leaf through no color photos, etc... I love learning new information so I like this newsletter, although I can see how some might feel it's too deep or scientific. I didn't think it had much of any adds, except for a couple for the companion magazine.

Stern : Das Deutsche Magazin

Stern : Das Deutsche MagazinAll i wish was it is available as a e magazine save a lot of cost available to read faster

I was afraid it would never get here (it took four weeks to ship!) but now that my first issue has arrived, I couldn't be happier! The pictures are great, and the articles are full of interesting topics. Anyone interested in what Germany is like week to week should definately check out this magazine.

Buy Stern : Das Deutsche Magazin Now

Ever since I was a young child, I remember my parents subscribing to the STERN magazine, and I am continuing the tradition. Now that I live in the USA, it seems even more important for me to keep up with the current events that are taking place in Germany, as well as learning about the way that they view things that are happening around the globe, and how they view politics in the US.

This magazine provides not only political information, but also covers a variety of current topics that range from entertainment, over science, to history. I especially enjoy the diversity within the magazine, and the open minds with which the reporters approach foreign countries, cultures, and practices. The pictures in this magazine are absolutely stunning, even though the cover pictures are sometimes a little bit too "steamy" for American taste. However, it is always very refreshing to pick up the newest issue each week, and compare it to what the media in the US is providing us with.

Besides my family and friends from Germany, the STERN magazine remains my strongest link to German politics, economy, culture, perspectives, etc.

Read Best Reviews of Stern : Das Deutsche Magazin Here

STERN and I are old friends, my parents were subscribers for years and I always enjoyed the risqué photos appearing in STERN from a bygone era during my impressionable years. I recently subscribed to keep up my German language skills and the weekly issues are overwhelming me. But I skip the interior politics of Germany and read their take on our politics. Foreign media have a fresh outlook on our situation which, unfortunately for us is not available in our domestic media, biased as it is. They have more photos than any other source and I could probably spend a whole day if I wanted to look at them all. They cover news from around the world and must have their photographers everywhere. The recent uprising in Iran was covered to a point where they displayed the murder of that unfortunate, beautiful, young woman as she lay dying on the street while several men tried to save her. Very strong stuff, but Stern doesn't pull any punches. They cover much more including movies and the latest music releases (some from the United States) with reviews. Human interest stories covered sex around the world with lots of color photos. A recent delightful shocker was their coverage of the shaving of body hair among German females and males. Use your imagination! No, use it harder, I guess politically incorrect doesn't address this issue. Enjoy.

This magazine has such great variety, from current world new coverage to human interest stories. It's a great magazine for someone with German as a second language. It always comes on the same day every week.... I highly recommend this magazine.

Quick & Easy Crochet

Quick & Easy Crochetthey could include more clothing patterns that are easy to follow. Most of the projects are for children's toys and doily's. For a prolific crocheter I suppose it's best to develop your own patterns because you will quickly get bored with the scant clothing items included in the magazine.

This magazine prompted me to crochet years ago. I saw a pattern for a crochet bikini that I had to duplicate. I did it but I took it apart & never made another one. So I suppose I owe my crocheting career to this magazine. It's a shame they don't include more innovative clothing designs with different types of yarns.

This little magazine is full of a variety of beautiful, charming and useful patterns from seasonal decorations, doilies and afghans to very pretty clothing and accessories. The patterns don't employ lots of special stitches so it's easy going for just about anyone. Having checked out nearly every crochet magazine currently offered, I'd say this is well worth the subscription price for all but those who want only specialty and/or really challenging projects.

Buy Quick & Easy Crochet Now

I somehow got on their mailing list and got sent several past due notices without ever getting a magazine. Did see the magazine and it's not something I would have ever subscribed to very poor quality and nothing in it that the other better crochet magazines don't already have. The price is also outlandish for the black and white newspaper quality.

I love it as patterns are so easy. It has Many. I would recommend to all crocheter's.

Thanks!

Runner's World (1-year auto-renewal)

Runner's WorldJust an all-around great runner's magazine. Who's it for? Anyone who likes to run, from beginner to advanced, casual to professional. Here's a few things you'll find inside:

-equipment reviews (i.e. evaluations of the latest shoes)

-training techniques (tips from the pros)

-info about races (national as well as international)

-inspiring stories (to boost your motivation)

-nutrition info (tips to lose weight and boost performance)

A very well rounded running magazine with great information, I highly recommend it. Also for runners: Treat Your Own Achilles Tendinitis if you have tendinitis that is affecting your running.

I've been reading Runner's World for about three years now. It seems that whenever my motivation hits an all time low another magazine will end up in my mailbox. After reading half of the magazine I am forced to put on my running shoes and hit the streets.

There are many educational benefits I receive from these magazines. I enjoy their training tips to help me improve my running time. I enjoy their list of races in the back of issue so I can plan what I want to run next in my geographic area.

Most importantly, I highly appreciate the safety tips that are included. Running can be very hard on your body, as most of my cross country team learned in high school. This should become standard reading for high school students. I wish my coach had gone through an issue every month with us, highlighting how to run safely while diminishing run times.

If you run, get this magazine. If you don't run but would like to, visit their educational web page to get an idea how to start and then subcribe to the magazine so, like me, you are reminded to get off your duff and hit the streets.

Buy Runner's World (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I've been reading Runner's World for several years now but I am going to stop. Month after month I'll look at the cover and get excited about an "article" they say is included in the issue, only to locate the "article" and find it is no more than either a fluff piece of information that must be targeted toward someone who has never ran so much as a city block in their life, or it is a three sentence answer to a reader's question that was sent in. Do these actually count as in depth pieces that warrant advertisement on the cover?

Furthermore, every issue is the same. There will be an article on losing five lbs. by the holidays/summer/race season whatever month the issue happens to come out. There will be a shoe review (blah!). There will be a "Fifty Ways To Stay Motivated" piece which is always the same commonsensical tips. And there will be a "Special Woman's Section" which, when it shows up every single month, makes me wonder just how "special" it could really be.

Once in a while there will be a good recipe, or a decent (but way too short) article on a runner. However, you could save alot of money by only purchasing one issue of this magazine because, except for the pictures and graphics, all the articles will be pretty much the same month after month.

Read Best Reviews of Runner's World (1-year auto-renewal) Here

Hardcore runners will read "Runner's World" because they have to. It popularizes the sport, and brings newcomers 'up to speed' about issues and techniques important to them, as well as clues them in on who is who out on the road. a great magazine, except I simply prefer the depth of training and racing issues "Running Times" provides a bit more. Really... I wish I could've given this magazine a 3.9.

Running is a funky subculture, and "Runner's World" defines and educates that culture.

Since the late George Sheehan wrote his famous column that emphasized running as spiritual endeavor, "Runner's World" has taken on an Oprah Winfrey/Deepak Chopra sort of generalist running philosophy. That's not all bad, as I think the magazine thoroughly encourages fitness through running.

It isn't all fluff. There is plenty for the more avid runner to soak up. The avid runner will find their marathon coverage, especially Boston and New York, impressive.

Their running shoes review is what any runner will benefit from. It details every aspect of what makes a great shoe, almost to the point of parody. However, parody or not, their analysis will help you buy the shoe you need for your foot for your distance in your environment.

Buy a subscription to "Runner's World," lace up, and get out on a run!

I fully recommend "Runner's World."

Want Runner's World (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

Being an infrequent runner and trying to get back into shape for the Baltimore marathon this year, Runner's World is indispensible. A number of the articles are encouraging and help me with training, diet, etc. The equipment reviews make me salivate (I wish I could afford one of the Garmin training watches), but in all it's a great magazine. I highly recommend it!

Photoplus - England

Photoplus - EnglandI recently discovered PhotoPlus Magazine at my local bookstore. I am an amateur photographer who like most, want to get better. PhotoPlus caters exclusively to Canon EOS users. The majority of tutorials are demonstrated with mid-range models such as the Rebel and 40D. While the newstand price is quite pricey at around $12 per issue(ships from England), a subscription to this magazine is a far better investment than taking photography classes. Each issue contains usually 2 training DVD's featuring everything from Photoshop tools to Landscape photography. If you're a Canon user, you won't be disappointed with this magazine.

This is my second time around with this magazine. It is excellent for those who have canon cameras. Well worth the expenditure which is a little pricey due to the heavy postage from the UK, but worth every cent. I purchased a subscription not only for myself, but for my son as well.

Purchased for my husband who uses Canon products. He tells me the magazine has been very helpful and is well worth it.

I look forward to receiving this magazine every month. Can't say enough good things about it...yes, it is expensive because it ships from England, but worth every penny.

Concrete Wave

Concrete WaveMy husband absolutely loves this magazine. He is an true old school skateboarder and was really unable to connect with the other skateboard magazines that are moving to a new school view point. He spends hours reading the articles and looking at the pictures. Unfortunately, it makes him upset that we live in flat Florida and he craves hills.

I used to subscribe to Transworld some years ago, and it covered only street skating. I started longboarding after some injuries and was sent a copy of this magazine for free by one of the board companies. I am in complete agreement with the description about how every aspect of skateboarding is covered in this magazine. It has far better photos and the magazine itself is printed on a heavier paper stock than most of the magazines on the shelves. If I had the money for it right now, I would subscribe.

You know how it is when you subscribe to a magazine and you have to click past a notice that says "You will begin receiving your periodical in six to eight weeks."? Not Concrete Wave. I subscribed last week and lo and behold this miserable rainy Monday afternoon I return home to find the latest issue (the issue that made me want to subscribe) waiting for me when I got home -hand addressed, no less. They even included a 2011 calendar with longboarding girls on the cover (swoon!). Thanks, CW!

If your wheels are 60mm or bigger, you need this magazine.

Roadrunner Motorcycle Touring & Travel

Roadrunner Motorcycle Touring & TravelItching to get on the road? Love the long haul? Longing for a road trip whilst snow sits? I've traveled vicariously through the winter months with this little gem ... inspired for the road as soon as it smells like Spring. An informative, accessible, and descent guide to the long ride.

The first thing you'll notice, is that this magazine is printed in high quality, glossy paper. Its certainly a fancy magazine.

If you enjoy reading ride reports, then this is the subscription you are looking for. Most articles can be a little skimpy though, but you still get a great taste of the ride. The photography is generally fantastic.

I have subscribed to this magazine from the very beginning, and to this day there is no other magazine that caters to motorcycle tourers. The mag features a nice mix of US tours and international tours, although 95% are US tours. They really don't discriminate against any make or model as all types of motorcycles can be seen inside, which is really my favorite part. I have multiple motorcycles, basically at least 1 from each category. Another reason why I love this magazine are the pull out tank bag maps. Although I'm not great with computers, their website lets me access all of my issues in digital formats, and I can download all of the maps and GPS files.

Prevention (1-year auto-renewal)

PreventionThink you want to subscribe to Prevention Magazine? Think again. The Rodale Corporation (Rodale, Inc.), which publishes this magazine and others, uses a scam to squeeze money out of unsuspecting consumers who have subscribed to their magazines and then decided not to renew the subscription. After several attempts to send you renewal invoices and other scare tactics, you'll receive a collection notice from the North Shore Collection Agency demanding money and raising the threat of debt delinquency. For most of us, this translates into a tarnished credit report.

Please let your friends, family, co-workers, and other people in your life know about this deceptive scare tactic to fleece money from folks. The North Shore Agency is the subject of lawsuits and under investigation by Attorneys General in various states. To learn more, Google North Shore Agency and magazine subscriptions. You'll learn about this rip-off. Stay informed and be aware of all the other magazines Rodale publishes.

Maybe Amazon will look into this shady practice on behalf of its customers.....

Back in the 1970's my grandmother subscribed to Prevention. At that time, it was a wonderful magazine, filled with informative articles aimed at the "Prevention" of illness and the promotion of wellness (as the founder of Prevention, J.I. Rodale had preached). Articles about the role of vitamins and nutrition were light years ahead of their time. (J.I. can be given a lot of credit for bringing vitamins and supplements to the mainstream). Over the years, and especially after the tragic death of Robert Rodale (J.I.'s son), and the takeover by his wife and daughter, it has unfortunately transformed into a fluffy, tabloid-like "women's magazine" with scantily clad women on the covers, and oneor two-page articles instructing women to get killer abs and burn the fat. I think J.I. Rodale is probably spinning in his grave to see what his descendents have done to butcher this magazine, which bears NO resemblence whatsoever to what it used to be. I flipped through a copy in disgust recently to note, as another reviewer has stated, plenty of ads for DRUGS which really seems to go against the idea of preventing illness in the first place (whereas the old Prevention sang the praises of vitamins and health foods). I don't know why the Rodale family doesn't just scrap the title and call it something else, but alas, they are a major corporation now and I have little hope that this magazine will improve any time soon.

New Moon Girls

New Moon GirlsI first came across this magazine years ago when it was a fledgling publication. I was so impressed that I filed it in my memory banks and years later, when my daughter was about 6, I bought her a subscription. She's thirteen and still loves it. This magazine is ad-free and is written by girls, for girls. They promote open-minded exploration of ideas and values. And they explore all sorts of topics girls are interested in, everything from friendships to menstruation to zits to human rights to natural resources -all without ads or stupid stereotypes. I highly recommend this magazine and often give it as a gift! My only regret: they don't publish a similar magazine for boys! Most boys mags are just trendy trash.

I love this magazine for my tween girl!! It's got the kind of wholesome content that American Girl magazine has but without the ever-present push to buy products. It has excellent thought provoking stories, great for parents trying to raise a girl in today's materialistic, big-on-bling, low-on-substance world! An excellent alternative to most of the "teen magazines" that many tweens end up looking at. I think my 11 year old daughter has much better things to do with her time & mind than to lay around swooning over clothes, makeup & boys from tv shows.

The stated age range for this magazine is 8 and up. I have not subscribed to the magazine, but I looked through the free sample copy on the publishers website, and I wanted to write to warn parents that it covers some fairly heavy topics. Things that are at least mentioned in passing include: body image issues, eating disorders, teasing, bullying, sexual abuse, forced child marriages, sexism, when to start dating, texting, etc. Most of the issues are handled tastefully, without inappropriate details, and giving room for the complexity of the issues. But depending on your girl and your household, you may not want to introduce these topics yet.

Want New Moon Girls Discount?

After reading 2 issues of this magazine, I feel strongly that the suggested age range (of 8 and up) is off.

The first issue I picked up had a discussion about suicide, the next had one about abortion. These are two important topics but, IMHO, not for 8 year old readers. I also wished the discussions of "huge crushes" on boys had been left out. If I had reviewed these two issues before subscribing, I would not have done so at this time.

In addition to these "older" topics, there is some other good content. My complaint is that the age recommendation is way off. I would put this magazine more at the 12 and up range.

Hawaii Magazine

Hawaii MagazineWe go to Hawaii annually and this magazine helps us stay in touch with island happenings, situations, cultural events on the mainland, recipes and all things Hawaiian. It helps ease the homesickness of being away from our 2nd "home". They even have an annual photo contest to enter for the photography buff. (Would I be shamefully plugging that I won the Cultural category in the issue featured to lure you to this review? [Bringing the Islands Home]) ;-)

For Hawaii fanatics, this mags for you...hands down!

"Hawaii" is a magazine devoted to covering all aspects of Hawaii, and as such is oriented less toward tourists and more toward residents than many other publications. The magazine covers current events in Hawaii, environmental issues on the islands, and features many cultural and heritage-oriented articles that many tourists will find of only passing interest.

Every issue has a useful events calendar for all the islands individually ("Kauai Happenings," etc.) The editors are very good to cover all the islands equitably, with as much emphasis on Kauai as Oahu, for instance. Despite the seeming focus on residents, there are many articles of interest to visitors, and numerous advertisements of great use to tourists as well.

I enjoy visiting Hawaii and find the magazine to be worthwhile, and actually enjoy the fact that it isn't focused exclusively on the tourist; the things I learn from "Hawaii" magazine help me to more fully appreciate the beauty and nuance of all the islands. I recommend "Hawaii" to anyone interested in knowing more about America's most tropical state.

Of the two existing reviews here currently, you couldn't get much different responses. Ironically, I'm right in the middle. I'm not Kama'aina (native) to Hawaii, but Hawaii is my passion; I live, breath, and sleep it. Hawaii is a place to be respected and loved. So how does Hawaii magazine handle that task?

Well, I guess it depends on what you're looking for. If you want the more tourist sided flavor to Hawaii, then the magazine probably will be what you enjoy. If you're looking for more native and eco-tourism based stuff, don't expect as much. Occasionally they'll put in pieces that aren't half bad on this topic, but it could be better. There recent anniversary editions were pretty good, but overall it still seems more like one big advertisement for tourists. Of course, that's where the money is, but you'd think a magazine called

Read Best Reviews of Hawaii Magazine Here

Hawaii Magazine is a very good publication for those who have an interest in America's fiftieth state. This magazine brings the world of the Hawaiian Islands to your home every month, with facts, figures, and photos taken from this island chain paradise.

One thing about Hawaii Magazine that is different from what you might expect is that it covers more than just travel. When I read this publication for the first time, I was surprised at the contents within. I always assumed this was a magazine solely about travel and tourism. While travel, resorts, and related topics are an important part of this magazine, they are not the only part. The rest of Hawaii Magazine deals with cultural and native topics. It lets you discover the people who inhabit these islands. You get to learn about Hawaiian customs, holidays, art, dress, and culture.

With the emphasis on culture, Hawaii Magazine is a learning experience. The people responsible for the publication of this magazine want readers to come away with a better understanding of what it means to be Hawaiian and to live in this island chain. They want you to think of Hawaii as more than just a nice, warm, sunny place to visit. They want you to learn about the people that inhabit Hawaii: How they dress, how they celebrate events, how they interact with others, etc.

If I had to name a few cons to this magazine, they would have to be the publications short length (less than 100 pages per issue) and its infrequent publication (every two months). Other than these negative aspects, most everything else about this magazine makes it worthwhile to read. It's an educational lesson on the people and the lifestyle of those we call Hawaiian.

Australian Patchwork & Quilting

Australian Patchwork & QuiltingI am an experienced quilter and am familiar with many of the quilting publications currently on the market. In my opinion this is certainly one of the very best. Beautiful quilts for all skill levels and excellent instructions. Exciting patterns and outstanding use of color. Very inspiring.

Sadly, it is hard to find on news stands or in US quilt shops, and the subscription price in the US is very high. But, if you have the money to invest in one really good magazine, this is it.

While I truly love this magazine, it should only sell for about $9.00 per issue. Buy it on the newsstands or quiltshops and get their subscription card.

Hi: I am a brand new quilter and have had a chance to read and get some samples from one of your magazinez, I am really happy with my experience and would like to see if you can direct me as of where I can find a particular volume.

I am looking for the August 2002 magazine which features a Butterflies Quilt, which I would like to reproduce for my home.

If any one can assist me with this I will appreciate it.

The other thing I find in your magazine is that give easy instructions on how to which is very helpfull when you are starting this kind of business for the first time.

Thank you very much for sharing with Us such a good publication.

Sincerely

Maria

BBC Wildlife

BBC WildlifeThis magazine let's me find out what is happening in the United Kingdom, Europe, and in Africa. The photography is wonderful, and the articles are interesting. BBC Wildlife is up there with National Geographic; you will read it more than once.

I know there are lots of great wildlife photos, many of them in National Geographic, but none are as consistently good as BBC Wildlife magazine. I have a hard time finding it in bookstores in California what with so many celebrity pictures and all, so am happy to pay Amazon for a subscription. I have never seen an issue that didn't have 'way more than one, or even two or three, fabulous wildlife photographs, the kind where you say WOW, is that for real?!

Non-Sport Update

Non-Sport UpdateThis magazine represents what can go wrong with a fan driven magazine, namely what starts as a labor of love and a desire to connect a community of collectors eventually evolves into a hype rag for an industry. The publishers and writers get plenty of free product to review as well as ad revenue so there is no actual critique of products or the companies that produce them, even when they make horrible products that should have been great. Gotta keep that gravy train rolling. The price guide is collated from retailer info and suprise suprise the retailers who contribute are also advertisers. No accounting for actual real world pricing is reflected, prices come out, rise for a month or two and then plateau, never to be looked at again. Even after initial hype dies down and prices in the real world market (like the auction site that begins with an E) drop considerably there is no adjustment to the price guide because they are off to the next hot new thing and nobody wants to make anyone feel bad that they paid too much. It is sad that this is all there is for non sports card collectors.

THE ACTUAL COVER FOR THIS ISSUE (APRIL/MAY) IS DARTH VADER (REVENGE OF THE SITH).

PROMO CARDS INSIDE ARE: SW, HARRY POTTER (THE SORCEROR'S STONE), STAR TREK ENTERPRISE, FAMILY GUY (ANIMATION), BATTLESTAR GALACTICA AND BENCH WARMER.

ALSO, ARTICLES ON NEW MOVIES AND NEW PRODUCT UPDATES.

THE BEST OF ALL: THERE IS A REAL PRICE GUIDE/LIST IN THE CENTER OF THE MAGZAINE!

++++ also ++++ WIN HARRY POTTER PRIZES INSIDE!

WELL WORTH THE MONEY.
