Parabola

ParabolaI first discovered Parabola about ten years ago. This is a magazine (more of a book, really) that is filled with meaning, and as well it should be, because the point of the periodical is to clarify meaning, in myth, in symbol, in language, in song, and in the essence of meaning itself.

Now, before you start thinking, 'My goodness, this is just too esoteric for me!' do ponder the various parts of your daily life. You are surrounded by meaningful symbols, that this magazine might possibly help you appreciate more.

Why do we stop at a red light, and go at a green light, rather than the other way round?

There is a symbolism inherent here. Our daily life is a fight for consciousness against the deadening factors of existence; this magazine can be one more tool in the arsenal of helping to stay awake.

'Whoa! Too mystical for me!'

Not really. At least, not always. In preparing my review of a book on Sufi practices, I pulled an issue off the shelf from 1997, whose theme is Conscience and Consciousness. This has a lead article on the Sufi way of understanding by Tim Winter, entitled The Saint with Seven Tombs -in it, he combines reflection on poetry, calligraphy, geography and history to weave an interesting and enlightening story of Sufi practice. Beyond this article, it includes writings on social, cultural, and worship practices from across the world: Michael Tobias writes on Islands of Nonviolence, emphasising the ecological peacefulness in the philosophies in India; Roger Lipsey explores the thought and philosophy of Dag Hammarskjöld on matters of conscience, and others go off on tangents (there is even a section entitled Tangent).

Included in each edition are many book reviews which explore topics related to the theme of the issue, as well as the more general themes of Parabola, being thought and philosophy, myth and meaning, spirituality and humanity. This is an extraordinarily rich collection of essays that come regularly.

For over twenty-five years, Parabola has covered the spiritual and cultural traditions of the world in art, essay, and story. There are occasional interviews as well. They also publish books, one of which was recently chosen by a distinguished panel as one of the hundred best spiritual books of the century, And there was light, by Jacques Lusseyran, blind hero of the French Resistance.

This is a wonderful magazine. Search for it, and find some meaning.

Parabola is a quarterly journal that's one of the pioneering publications on the subject of myth and tradition. Every issue explores one of the facets of human existence from the point of view of as many of the world's religious and spiritual traditions as possible, through the prism of story and symbol, myth, ritual, and sacred teachings.

Why are we here? and What's the meaning of life? are two of the oldest questions posed by humanity, and Parabola covers the spectrum of the mystical, psychological, anthropological while exploring these age-old questions.

Parabola covers a specific topic theme every issue. For example, one issue's theme was Chaos and Order and featured articles like:

*A Celtic Mandala (which looks at an archetype of order)

*A Hymn by Thomas Moore (honoring the positive attributes of disorder)

*Monsters, Children of Chaos (about what lurks in the dark deep).

Past journal themes that have been explored include:

*Riddle and Mystery: Questions With Answers, Questions Without Answers

*Dying: Ending or the Beginning of Transformation?

*Play and Work: Struggle and Relaxion in the Search for Meaning

*The Knight and The Hermit: Heroes of Action and Reflection

*Prison: Inner and Outer Confinement.

The issue on Friendship features pieces such as:

*A gathering of Sufi and Medieval Welsh poems with commentary from Coleman Barks

*Gehlek Rimpoche describing the qualities of the sangha

*Hazrat Inayat Khan speaks on the spirits of agitation and of brotherhood

*Kate Chadbourne follows a Welsh prince into the Underworld and finds an unexpected friendship

*A tribute to the late Lakota elder and activist Tony Black Feather

*Retellings of stories from the Hindu, Jewish, and Native American traditions

If you enjoy the likes of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Clarissa Pinkola Estes--as well as myth, symbols, meaning, and culture--you'll find Parabola Magazine a feast for mind and spirit.

This magazine does a wonderful job of approaching myth from all fronts. From psychology to spirituality, there are many views presented. This makes for wonderful reading and insights. If you like Carl Jung or Joseph Campbell you'll probably enjoy this publication.

Anyone willing to enlarge their understanding of themselves and their place on a planet that urgently requires us all to listen to and appreciate each other, will find at least one, if not many offerings in any issue of this thought provoking and consistently well rounded publication that will illuminate a mystery, spark a quest, satisfy a deeply felt hunger for insight and meaning, or re-sanctify the common day. True, some might ask if we really need the unnervingly nebulous and impractical "nonsense" of myth and lore, of mystery, imagination, art and symbol. As Joseph Campbell is said to have remarked, any hound can live an apparently satisfactory life without the slightest need or desire for all this, and that is perfectly fine, but it is, after all, a hound's life.

a lovely magazine filled with insights that go beyond just about anything else. The spectrum of human mystical/spiritual experience is covered with eloquence and uniqueness.

I wish magazines like this were available when I'm waiting to have my teeth worked on or my car fixed. The human mind is polluted by so much sports and celebrity trash that works like this end up soothing the soul and revivifying the mind.

Editors you have done a brilliant job, indeed.

Yes it is in business! My May 2013 issue is in my hands. Apparently White River Productions took over from LampLighter Pub. and has continued publishing. I had my April issue as well as my previous issues. My subscription has even been extended to cover what minor delays were experienced. Check out the web site at to see for yourself. Frankly, I'm glad it has survived it is my top source of model railroad news, and I prefer it over Model Railroader and Model Railroad Craftsman.

Inc. (1-year auto-renewal)

Inc.Inc. is one of my favorite magazines. It has good, practical information for the entrepreneur and small business owner, as well as anyone who is interested in business. Unlike other business magazines that contain articles that are long and ponderous, Inc. doesn't waste your time with tedium.

Its sister publication, Fast Company, is also good.

Two reviewers gave this magazine low ratings because they hadn't received their first issue after 4 weeks. Look, it CLEARLY states: "Availability: The first issue should arrive in 6-10 weeks." That means the first issue should arrive between 1½ and 2½ months after the order is placed. It hurts to see a great magazine get a lower rating than it deserves because some people either can't read or can't do math.

Used to be excellent magazine with practical advice.

More and more of the content is now fluffy dream stuff.

The businesses they feature are now almost all ones that depend on fashion and customer whim cupcakes, T-shirts, micro-breweries not sustainable businesses.

Good columns are gone. The one good column left is by the wife of the man who built Stonyfield Farm yogurt about how entrepreneurship affects your family.

Buy Inc. (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I like this magazine because it's just right for a business owner who runs almost any kind or size of business.

It's not focused on one set of things like technology even though it does have technological tips. It's not a magazine trying to sell you other businesses. It actually gives you sound and productive advice. It gives you ideas that are applicable in the real world and on the forefront so you can be ahead of your competitors. The language is practical enough to be understood by beginning business owners and those who have plenty of experience in the business world. I've tried other business magazines but the others either have too much advertising, focus on one subject (like investments, stocks, etc), try to do nothing but sell you other franchises and other services, or are only useful to a narrow set of business models. Try this one. You'll definitely benefit and enjoy the read.

I have been reading Inc. for the past 3 years. I love it. I am currently in business school and I am taking a lot of entrepreneurship classes. I have been surprised how often the articles have been relevant to cases and discussions in school. I would highly recommend this magazine to anyone interested in entrepreneurship or who is working in or running a small business.

National Geographic Traveler

National Geographic TravelerI have subscribed to National Geographic Traveler for almost a year and find it fairly enjoyable. The destinations are good, the photos are good and the articles are good. But also nothing to knock your socks off.

Why only four stars and not five? The magazine doesn't wow me very often and I have found that most of the articles focus on white bread middle to upper class Americans. I am not the sort of traveler who is going to be staying in $350 a night room when I go to Bali. The do have budget conscious or "nitty gritty" tours/hotels/destinations etc but there are fewer of those than luxury tours/hotels/destinations.

They also occasionally focus on trips that are a bit too exotic and remote. What are the odds that I will decide to scale K2, Kayak 28 days in the Arctic Circle or run a marathon in the Sahara Desert? The articles are okay to read but not in depth enough to be educational nor practical enough to go to. They do nothing but peak your curiosity a tad and then you move on.

So for me the magazine is only a 4 out of five stars. Will I renew my subscription, yes. Its a good magazine, but if your looking for something with just as good destinations, articles and photos with a bit less posh and unattainable, scope out the aptly names Budget Travel. If you have the money to burn when you travel and enjoy reading about other peoples extreme adventures this magazine will be perfect.

I dropped my subscription to National Geographic Traveler after two years. The only really good thing about the magazine was the photography of the places covered--what you would expect from a National Geographic magazine. The articles and reviews in the magazines were generally useless for me as a middle-class traveler. I travel quite a bit overseas, but cannot afford most of the places NG Traveler covers. If you can afford the $300-$500 rooms at the places NG Traveler recommends, then subscribe. But if you are the average traveler on a budget, skip this magazine.

This is a great magazine for the dreaming traveler. Unless you have quite a bit of money, this may be as close as you get to some of these places, but que sera, sera. The photos are of National Geographics usual great quality, and every now and then you'll find something close enough to home to actually see.

This is a better than average travel magazine. Good mix of practical type stuff, budget travel ideas, and sort of 'dream trips.' I've read Frommer's Budget Travel in the past, and I like this one somewhat better than that. It is way better than the prestige publications like Travel + Leisure or Conde Nast Traveler, which cater seemingly only to the super rich.

It took less than a month for our order to be processed. Wow, what speed! So far, my husband and I are very impressed with the magazine. This magazine seems to offer something for everyone from both budget and interest perspectives. (Not just a travel magazine for the rich.) The photos are, of course, absolutely fabulous too.

Dance Magazine

Dance MagazineI don't currently subscribe to Dance Magazine. But I was a subscriber for seven years some time ago and I have to take a moment to point out its merits here, especially since no one has done so.

For 76 years, this magazine has been publishing some of the finest commentary on dance of all types in America. There are some newer publications which cater more to the young dancer, the dance teacher who is not affiliated with any major tradition, and which deal with newer and more popular styles of dance. But this was the only dance magazine which was being published when I was a young dancer (I am now 26, and still a dancer).

I would read this magazine cover-to-cover every month. I pulled out countless gorgeous pictures of famous, classically trained dancers to paste on my walls from this magazine. For someone like me who studied dance history, this magazine has been marvelous. It regularly featured articles and interviews with emerging choreographers as well as pieces about those great dancers and choreographers we can all continue to learn from, like Diaghilev, Pavlowa, Ashton, Balanchine, Tharp, Cunningham, Taylor-the list goes on and on.

The magazine features an advice column for dancers written by Linda Hamilton, PhD, as well as a section for younger dancers, thus catering to the competitive dancer, the auditioning dancer, etc. It reviews performances by nationally reknowned companies, as well as some lesser-known companies, on a monthly basis. It also lists schools and companies nationally, and has a section for classified ads in the back. On the whole the advertising in this magazine was less offensive when I took it than that which I have found in some other dance magazines, often featuring gorgeously trained young dancers and advertising summer programs and schools as well as dance-related products.

In short, this magazine is a highly intelligent publication which has a real sense of the history of dance, particularly American dance, that I have not found in any other publication. The very existence of the the archived photos of dancers you may never see anywhere else that they regularly bring back into circulation is alone enough to truly make the reader feel connected with the world of dance. For me, a young dancer growing up in a somewhat rural area, this magazine connected me with dancers everywhere, helped me to articulate what it was I loved about this beautiful art.

I will note, however, that when I subscribed to this magazine Clive Barnes was the Senior Editor, and has now left the magazine. I have not read the magazine since he left, so I cannot attest to its quality since then. Check it out for yourself-the magazine's website:

Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement

Guns & Weapons for Law EnforcementBeing in law enforcement for ten years now, I recently came across this magazine and decided to purchase one. I have now subscribed and am expecting my first issue. It is geared toward law enforcement, and with that, mainly focuses on .223 caliber AR's and duty weapons such as the Glock line of pistols and the like. It will, in each issue, usually cover a non-traditional weapon such as a new 1911 or a bolt action rifle. As I said, the focus is mainly law-enforcement, which some people may not like. But as a patrol officer, I find the magazine helpful in allowing me to keep up with the latest developments in law enforcement weapons and I have used the magazine to guide me with the purchase of my newest patrol rifle and with all the accessories that I have purchased for it.

This magazine isn't bad, it articles are usually well written and the photos are usually quite good. The problem I have with it is every issue seems identical to the one before it. You can only look at the newest and best M4 clone so many times before it becomes just the same old news.

Buy Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement Now

This is a good Magazine for variations fo AR-15 and the latest toys, whistles and gadgets to come in the market. But my overall trouble with this is that I paid for a year subscription and only recieved 4 issues period. I waited about 4 months to get my 1st issue and they only 3 more the whole year. Poor service indeed as I had to go to hoops inquiring about this issue with Amazon and the publisher which failed as I emailed and called. Why even have to go through that, but then again they had my money already which says it all!!!!

If your into the lastest and greatest things that are available on the market then it's a great magazine. I was hoping for something a little bit different but overall the magazine is a good one. A little bit expensive but good.

This magazine absolutely sucks unless you like a million somewhat similar variations of the AR-15 and also, I didn't even receive all the magazines that I was supposed to get.

Antique Power Magazine

Antique Power MagazineI love old tractors. Old cars, old engines, old farm equipment. And frankly, I'm not that old myself. I have a tractor in the yard that's 20 years my elder, however, and I love having it around. Antique Power Magazine takes you on a nationwide tour of what used to be the ubiquitous solution to Getting Things Done. From little garden tractors that would be dwarfed by today's "riding mowers" (and unlike the modern mowers, those little garden tractors could still pull a small plow) to mighty old steam traction engines, they're all part of this country's post-industrial history. And it's just brilliant stuff from collections as described by the owners, to the complicated, tortuous corporate histories, to sneak peeks at models seldom if ever seen by the public.

I gave a subscription of this magazine as a gift...for someone I LIKE. That ought to point up how highly I regard it.

Outstanding magazine if yu love old tractors this magazine is for you, not only contains great stories but very useful tips

Diabetes Self-Management (1-year auto-renewal)

Diabetes Self-ManagementThis jewel was initially given to me by a nurse specializing in diabetes. She said I should get a subscription. What the nurse did not tell me was that this bimonthly magazine is a wonderful aide for general good health.

First, "Diabetes Self Management" does provide outstanding information about diabetes. In one issue I learned exactly how this disease functions and how easy it is to make myself worse. Another article explained my treatment options, discussed their effectiveness, and gave me a comparative analysis of them.

"Diabetes Self Management" has explained, in terms I can understand, how my diet and activities make such a difference in how I feel. For example, I had been told to carefully monitor my calories and eat a good balanced diet. I did that and my blood sugar remained a problem. The magazine published an article, based upon detailed research, that explained which foods are quickly processed into my system and can elevate my blood sugar 30 points in 15 minutes. It mentioned others that were processed very slowly and would effect my blood sugar levels gently over a period of hours vital information for a diabetic.

But there is a bonus. "Diabetes Self Management" includes articles on general good health and good living. The September October issue printed a wonderful article on Disaster Preparedness that is a must have for anyone who could face a natural disaster like a tornado, hurricane, flood, or fire. An additional article discussed common foot problems and their solutions again in terms that are easy to understand.

Diabetes Self Management is an excellent resource for information that we should all have available to us. I highly recommend this product.

There are a lot of helpful articles in this magazine for those with Diabetes. It keeps you up to date on the latest equipment and medicines. There are always articles of encouragement, too, regarding how to better deal with the disease. It helps to read about other people's stories.
