New Jersey Monthly (1-year auto-renewal)

New Jersey MonthlyI'm not a big fan of New Jersey Monthly. For one thing, it is jam packed with ads. Also, even though it's supposed to be about the entire state of NJ, it focuses heavily on North Jersey. I think South Jersey Magazine has more interesting articles covering things people really want to read about -unlike NJ Magazine, which wastes endless amounts of space on things like so and so's million dollar kitchen renovation (who cares?). Sometimes I feel like I'm reading "Cribs: The Magazine". Maybe some people are into this stuff, but for the average New Jerseyan, I wouldn't recommend it. Lastly -and this really bugs me -I saw one of the editors on a local news program talking about "The Diner Issue" where NJ Magazine ranked top NJ diners. When asked how they came up with the list, said editor did not reply that they polled readers, researched online reviews by real customers, or sent out teams of taste testers to as many diners as possible. Instead, she answered that the magazine staff simply picked them. NICE.

As a transplant to NJ I looked forward to this magazine every month to learn about my adopted state. It was a terrific guide to the state's history, current events, people, places to explore, etc.

In recent years the magazine has become a guide to the best decorators, doctors, plastic surgeons, lawyers, trendy restaurants, expensing housing, etc. If I used to spend an hour or two reading each issue I now spend 15 minutes.

I have need a subscriber for more than 10 years and now I may not renew -Bob

Informative magazine however there are too many advertisements. I wish it had more information then it actually does. It was truly a disappointment.

Lots of information about New Jersey, past, present and future. Great recommendations for things to do, places to visit and eat. Only negative is that it has too much medical advertising.

Classics Illustrated Junior

Classics Illustrated JuniorI am extremely pleased to be able to obtain these superbly resurrected versions of Classics Illustrated Junior. I have several already, and plan to purchase all issues made available. Except for a very slight reduction in size, these reproductions are exact reprints of the original books I enjoyed as a kid; I read every copy of both Classics Illustrated and Classics Illustrated Junior, I could get my hands on, back in the 1950s. I, like many unfortunate souls, allowed my collection to slip through my fingers over the years; hey, we read and traded comic books back then, we didn't collect them. I, like many people, wish I had. Now, I have another chance. I read the Classic Illustrated Junior publications to my 4-? year old granddaughter; she loves them. This time I plan to keep them, and pass them on for my great grandchildren to enjoy. The stories, illustrations, and material contained in these reprints are of exceptional quality. I believe it would be of great benefit to our youth to occasionally turn off their game boys and TV; sit back and enjoy these simple treasures. Both adults and children may actually develop an appreciation for a long-standing form of valued entertainment.

Super Picsou Geant

Super Picsou GeantReading "Uncle Scrouge" in French is a great way to improve vocabulary and the story often make me smile as well :). Unlike the previous reviewer has stated my Picsou always arrives with the wrapper intact in perfect condition.

This magazine about Scrooge McDuck (Picsou) is put out by Disney, with all the same illustrators, and stories, only written in French. We read it to improve our conversational French. It's fun, it's light, and lest you think your French skills are beyond a "children's book" let me ask you this: Can you say "shipwreck" in French? What about "jet engine," "surgical research," "shoe buckles," or "hallucination?" Reading the magazine gives you idioms you would never pick up in French class. We absolutely LOVE our magazines! On the down side, expect a delay of at least 3 MONTHS (yes, months) for the first magazine to arrive, and alas, when it does, the wrapper will be all torn off and the cover smootched. Copies of these magazines from the 70's are collected, and you can find old issues online used for around 10 bucks if you want to try one before you get a subscription.

USA Today : the Nations Newspaper - 10 Week Subscription

USA Today : the Nations Newspaper - 10 Week SubscriptionThe subscription thru Amazon is fine, but USAToday has altered their format. I can live with the smaller size, but the type is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it! I know print newspapers are losing business to the internet, but these changes are not in the best interest of their customers. I hope they re-think these changes and go back to the old format

The USA Today is a great newspaper for those who do not have a lot of time to read long articles. It gives you an update of what is happening around the USA and world. It's a fine newspaper that meets my needs.

Buy USA Today : the Nations Newspaper - 10 Week Subscription Now

What were they thinking? Is this the new COKE? The new look is virtually un-readable because:

1. The paper is thinner, so thin I'm afraid it will self destruct in 10 secons.

2. The font is so much smaller that it is AN EFFORT TO READ IT.

3. The reduced ink content is laughable. Have you seen the weather map? It almost fades into the horizon. No impact whatsoever.

4. The organization of articles, once a strength is now a jumbled mess.

5. The LIFE section is so ingrained with meaningless pop culture articles, geared to 16 year olds, anyone over the age of 30 pages through that section in, oh, let's say 10 seconds before they give up.

They are beggin us to read the paper on line, where unfortunately for them, we have better national choices (NYT, WST)and regional choices.

I hope this paper dies a quick death.

Yes

YesThis is by far the most inspiring work I have seen on what people are doing instead of moping about how alienated or messed up the world is. These people are doing very strong institutional experiments that work. The word of these people's work needs to get out and be read. Awsome, inspiring, and informative.

I have subscribed to Yes! Magazine since it's inception about 12 years ago. It is an upbeat, positive alternative magazine that highlights real issues and real solutions to some of the most pressing problems of the day. There are no ads in the magazine it's supported by subscriptions and donations. I even bought a 3-year gift subscription for my local public library to make it accessible to more people it's readable, informative, and it's printed on New Leaf Paper with 100% recycled fiber, 50% post-consumer wast, and processed chlorine free, so you feel good about the environmental benefits of reading it it's a quarterly, so you have time to read it cover-to-cover, while eagerly awaiting the next great issue!

Dance Magazine

Dance MagazineI don't currently subscribe to Dance Magazine. But I was a subscriber for seven years some time ago and I have to take a moment to point out its merits here, especially since no one has done so.

For 76 years, this magazine has been publishing some of the finest commentary on dance of all types in America. There are some newer publications which cater more to the young dancer, the dance teacher who is not affiliated with any major tradition, and which deal with newer and more popular styles of dance. But this was the only dance magazine which was being published when I was a young dancer (I am now 26, and still a dancer).

I would read this magazine cover-to-cover every month. I pulled out countless gorgeous pictures of famous, classically trained dancers to paste on my walls from this magazine. For someone like me who studied dance history, this magazine has been marvelous. It regularly featured articles and interviews with emerging choreographers as well as pieces about those great dancers and choreographers we can all continue to learn from, like Diaghilev, Pavlowa, Ashton, Balanchine, Tharp, Cunningham, Taylor-the list goes on and on.

The magazine features an advice column for dancers written by Linda Hamilton, PhD, as well as a section for younger dancers, thus catering to the competitive dancer, the auditioning dancer, etc. It reviews performances by nationally reknowned companies, as well as some lesser-known companies, on a monthly basis. It also lists schools and companies nationally, and has a section for classified ads in the back. On the whole the advertising in this magazine was less offensive when I took it than that which I have found in some other dance magazines, often featuring gorgeously trained young dancers and advertising summer programs and schools as well as dance-related products.

In short, this magazine is a highly intelligent publication which has a real sense of the history of dance, particularly American dance, that I have not found in any other publication. The very existence of the the archived photos of dancers you may never see anywhere else that they regularly bring back into circulation is alone enough to truly make the reader feel connected with the world of dance. For me, a young dancer growing up in a somewhat rural area, this magazine connected me with dancers everywhere, helped me to articulate what it was I loved about this beautiful art.

I will note, however, that when I subscribed to this magazine Clive Barnes was the Senior Editor, and has now left the magazine. I have not read the magazine since he left, so I cannot attest to its quality since then. Check it out for yourself-the magazine's website:

Jewelry Artist : Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist

Jewelry Artist : Lapidary Journal Jewelry ArtistThis magazine is geared to the jewelry artist who does a lot of lapidary work. I've subscribed to this magazine on and off for many years. While I still like this magazine and find it somewhat useful, it's not as good as it used to be. The instructional value is just not as good. I still have my old issues and I would rate them a 5. My new favorite jewelry magazine is Art Jewelry.

The Lapidary Journal for Jewelry Artist is a great addition to my growing library book collection on all things that matter to working metal. As a mid-level metal-smith of small-scale objects I appreciate the many lessons provided by the Lapidary Journal. There are articles on gemology basics, techniques on forging and fabrication. The authors give great tips that can help a beginner progress at a faster rate than if she stuck to in-class or workshop teachings. There are plenty of step-by-step photos in color which can be really key to those of us who are visual learners. Once you have moved far enough along you'll probably consider equipping your studio, the magazine is helpful in their reviewing of tools and materials. This is a worthy magazine subscription.

I'm a metal smith/jeweler and I really enjoy the seeing what other people are making. What's kind of trendy or popular right now helps keep me up on my business. And not just lost in my own world of the last thing that inspired me to make something crazy that probably won't sell. I'm a professionally trained jeweler so there are not a lot of techniques that I haven't seen before that they demonstrate. But I can see this being really helpful if someone was a hobbyist.

Cooking for Profit

Cooking for ProfitWhile this magazine definitely isn't designed for the home cook or casual culinarian, it's a really excellent source of information for industry insiders. As an owner/operator I've subscribed to Cooking For Profit for years and find that every issue contains some piece of information that relates directly to a specific project or problem I'm working on at the moment.

One note: Cooking For Profit heavily favors and promotes gas cooking equipment. But since my kitchen is almost entirely gas, I find it very informative in terms of learning the latest trends in gas equipment. It's a tech-heavy mag...lots of equipment overviews, etc. but every issue is also full of restaurant profiles and other valuable tips and ideas.

Again, this magazine is for professionals. Don't waste your time unless you're in the business or someone trying to get in (it'd be a great resource for students). If you're in the business, it's definitely worth the read!

Unless you have a resturant, this magazine is useless. I got it thinking it would cover Personal Chefs, but it is all about gas applences. Pass on it, it's boring too.

Total waste of money. I finally got my first issue and it had 4 recipes and about 10 pages on gas equipment THAT'S IT!!!!! Save your money that's how to make a profit

Florida Gardening

Florida GardeningThis is not a large magazine, but it gets right to the point. It's great for the new Floridian who is learning which plants to plant where and when in their yard, and it is also helpful for those of us who have been here for a few years and are looking to try growing something new! The advice columns are particularly helpful, and the calendar of upcoming shows and plant fairs is nice, too.

Florida Gardening This magazine is specifically for Florida's unique gardening conditions, especially from Sarasota south. It's geared more toward tropical/semi-tropical plants and is invaluable for gardeners new to the southern part of the state. Pictures are gorgeous.

The first issue of this magazine is short on articles. I would not pay this much for such a skimpy magazine on the newsstand.

Because this was a gift I really fell like I splurged.
