New Jersey Monthly (1-year auto-renewal)

New Jersey MonthlyI'm not a big fan of New Jersey Monthly. For one thing, it is jam packed with ads. Also, even though it's supposed to be about the entire state of NJ, it focuses heavily on North Jersey. I think South Jersey Magazine has more interesting articles covering things people really want to read about -unlike NJ Magazine, which wastes endless amounts of space on things like so and so's million dollar kitchen renovation (who cares?). Sometimes I feel like I'm reading "Cribs: The Magazine". Maybe some people are into this stuff, but for the average New Jerseyan, I wouldn't recommend it. Lastly -and this really bugs me -I saw one of the editors on a local news program talking about "The Diner Issue" where NJ Magazine ranked top NJ diners. When asked how they came up with the list, said editor did not reply that they polled readers, researched online reviews by real customers, or sent out teams of taste testers to as many diners as possible. Instead, she answered that the magazine staff simply picked them. NICE.

As a transplant to NJ I looked forward to this magazine every month to learn about my adopted state. It was a terrific guide to the state's history, current events, people, places to explore, etc.

In recent years the magazine has become a guide to the best decorators, doctors, plastic surgeons, lawyers, trendy restaurants, expensing housing, etc. If I used to spend an hour or two reading each issue I now spend 15 minutes.

I have need a subscriber for more than 10 years and now I may not renew -Bob

Informative magazine however there are too many advertisements. I wish it had more information then it actually does. It was truly a disappointment.

Lots of information about New Jersey, past, present and future. Great recommendations for things to do, places to visit and eat. Only negative is that it has too much medical advertising.

Boundary Waters Journal

Boundary Waters JournalGreat magazine, and I read it upon arrival, and can't wait for the next one. Excellent pictures and stories of wilderness camping and fishing

I read each issue cover to cover as soon as it arrives. Great tips for my next treks, interesting stories on people, new ideas on where to go, how to travel, what to pack, new and proven gear, old gear that still works, how to fish. I've sent gift subscriptions to new Eagle Scouts with whom I've trekked the BWCAW. I can't say enough good about this magazine!

Colorado Outdoors

Colorado OutdoorsI really enjoy this magazine very much! The photographs are simply amazing, the articles are interesting & very well put together. It's nice to be able to see parts of Colorado in my own livingroom, & be able to decide where I'd like to venture to, rather than make a blind trip somewhere & be disappointed. The publisher also gives you the option of a free Hunting or Fishing guide to accompany your subscription. I can tell alot of time goes into the structure of this magazine. Kudos to the Publisher of this magazine!

...no advertisements! This magazine is small, but it's packed with good, timely information, as well as beautiful pictures of the flora, fauna, and big ol' rocks of Colorado! I am very pleased with this magazine and highly recommend it. If nothing else, I've found a few more places to add to my "must visit" list for Colorado!

Not quite what I'd hoped for a lot on fishing, not so much on wildlife. I'll give it until the subscription runs out....

5.0 Mustang & Super Fords (1-year auto-renewal)

5.0 Mustang & Super FordsI have almost every issue of this magazine, from way back in 1994 when it was bi-monthly, and there was no "& Super Fords" in the title. I have been a steady subscriber ever since. They have made one heck of a lot of progress in less than 15 years. They put out a lot of great info here, and you can tell the writers are serious Mustang freaks, as they should be. BUT.. there are a few little things that irritate me from time to time. I wish when they show how to install a part, they would do before & after dyno runs, AND 1/4 mile track runs, on every installation. Sometimes they do just the dyno run, so you don't know how it actually affects performance. Also, I wish they would make it a rule to always point out when a modification will make the car unable to pass smog inspection.

In fairness, they do this sometimes, and all the other Mustang mags I have read are the same way.

They have articles here for people who just want to pep up their daily driver, and also articles for building a 9 second dragstrip terror, and everything in between. If only they would lean a little more toward the daily driver end of the spectrum, it'd be a perfect magazine, but as it is, it's pretty close to perfect already. The only other gripe I have is they need to pay a LOT more attention to the V6 Mustangs, of all years! (especially now that the new 3.7 V6 makes 305 hp, as much as the 96-98 Mustang Cobra! And still gets 31 mpg!)

There are lots of photographs in the how-to articles, but I found it tends to cover older Mustangs at times (Fox body) which isn't as useful for S197 owners. There are also lots of advertisements for parts.

I initially became aware of the 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords magazine when an insert promoting it fell out of another car magazine that my hubby subscribes to. He seemed quite interested in possibly getting this because his other magazine was nearing the end of the subscription so I decided to get this for him as part of his Valentine's present. Gee, he'll be happy! Great price too!

In my opinion, this is the magazine for late model Mustangs, GT500's, and Shelby's. They do include the earlier models as well, but I appreciate that the majority of their pieces are on the late models, 2010 and newer. Good tech articles for getting more horses out of your engine, better handling too.

Art & Auction

Art & AuctionAnyone involved in one way or another in the art market should be an Art & Auction reader. Each issue covers different areas of collectibles, from Asian art to contemporary painting, from old masters to wine, from XVIIIth century furniture to Art Deco, and so on. There is a monthly artist dossier, delivering valuable insight into his or her career, style, key periods, price level, etc, and a regular in-depth coverage of the major public sales. Contributors are all long-time experts (Souren Melikian, Judd Tully...)and the illustrations of the works of art are often of a very high quality. Undoubtedly the irreplaceable bible of the art market.

Cancelled my subscription after just a few issues. It just does not have enough bang to justify the cost. At $100 per year. Also felt rather impersonal and cold. Art is beauty and one should always feel at home in it's company. This magazine did not have that tone, it left me cold.

Love the magazine. After 40 years working as a portrait painter it's the only art magazine I read. Plus carefully wrapped and delivered when and as described.

Military Vehicles (1-year)

Military VehiclesThis is not a magazine it is a parts catalog. I bought this for my 12 year old because he is interested in the military. If you restore military vehicles you might want to buy a parts catalog but I expected a magazine with more than a couple of articles. 99% ads.

In addition, they sent me two issues right away (both back issues) and the new issue within two weeks of that. So instead of getting your initial subscription over the course of the year, they cram it into 6 months. This way they get rid of back issues and then can start asking you to renew within the first few months of subscribing. After all, within the first two weeks you're already half way through the initial subscription.

I would HIGHLY recommend subscribing through Amazon though. They make the process of cancelling a subscription super easy. I have often been able to get a better price through Amazon then anywhere else.

Very interesting for those who have an interest. Hope to purchase a truck or two at some point. Nice to know that not all I worked on have gone to scrap. A lot of memories. Nice reference location for parts and history.

Investors Business Daily

Investors Business DailyThe advice given in IBD is tremendously useful to both the novice investor and to the more seasoned investor. Following the CAN SLIM rules set forth by IBD along with the rules for investment success that IBD provides will enable you to be successful in your investment endeavors. The IBD 100 is a useful tool in which IBD ranks the top 100 stocks, based on fundamentals, etc. Obviously, the editorials prove to be controversial. If you're interested in making money and you don't agree with the views of the staff, simply don't read that page. I don't and I make money. If you want to ignore this paper simply because of its conservative viewpoints, you are probably doing yourself a great disservice. Yes, there are cheaper financial newspapers out there. The point; however, is not what you put into something--it's what you get out of it. The return on investment can be astounding if you let it.

You may think twice when you see the subscription price. DON'T!!!

Investors Business Daily (IBD) is the top resource for beginner to professional investor. Each day IBD uses their highly successful CAN SLIM formula for identifying the next up and coming stocks. Great Features include:

The Big Picture A daily paragraph reviewing the previous days activity, along with a barometer of how the market is doing.

The Real Most Active List of stocks that see unusual increases/decreases in volume trading. Not your typical Microsoft/Cisco/Nasdaq 100 list.

Investor's Corner A daily lesson on becoming a better investor. Using history and examples.

IBD 100 The current 100 most promising stocks recognized by IBM thru a multitude of fundamentals.

Leaders and Success A daily biography of a historical political/business/military/sport leader and how they changed the face of their industry.

Finally, when you subscribe you get access to the IBD Learning Center which gives lessons on buying and selling.

If you pickup one lesson from this newspaper it will more than save you or make you back the subscription fee.

My greatest lesson learned thus far:

No matter what, if a stock falls below 7-8% of your initial purchase price, sell it. No matter what.

Buy Investors Business Daily Now

Now a fifth year subscriber, this paper is my investing Bible. But remember, it's the INVESTOR'S, not TRADER'S Business Daily. If you learn and follow their CANSLIM method you will be a successful investor. Get rich quick? No, but you can definitely manage your own stock portfolio better than your investment advisor or mutual fund manager can. Give yourself two years to learn, and expect to make all of the typical mistakes, and probably lose some money. After two years, if you stick with it and learn from your mistakes you will be ready to make your stock portfolio grow. There's nothing more satisfying than controlling your own money successfully. Skip the right-wing drivel on the editorial page. I read it just for a giggle occasionally. But the advice on investing is GOLD!!!

Read Best Reviews of Investors Business Daily Here

I have enjoyed subscribing to this newspaper; also for it's online access. It has some interesting articles some times. It provides insight and valuable information about many companies (stocks) that I find interesting as well as about other news related to business. It does have some conservative writers; but it is only in the editorials and a few articles. I recommend this newspaper along with the Financial Times. The IBD does not have the range of articles as the Financial times.

Ironically, I wanted to see what everyone was saying about IBD, to confirm that I had made a good investment in the purchase of the paper. Instead I feel that I must provide my own review. I will be retiring (hopefully) in 5 8 years and I wanted to make sure that my investments were going to take care of me. I pulled off some of my cash to invest, signed up with Scottrade and started buying stocks. One of the stocks I bought tanked almost immediately and my investment was down 22.7% within 3 weeks.

I had started researching and studying after my initial investment (BAD IDEA) and subsequently tried the 30 day free trial. Before I purchased IBD I talked to my FA who is managing my other investments and he indicated that it was a good rag and that he used it.

I started cramming and reading everything I could in IBD and started selecting stocks from the IBD 50 and the strangest thing happened; I started making money and lots of it. The first week after studying and surrendering to the CAN SLIM system I made 6.64% for the week. The second week I made 4.49% and this week I am on pace to make 2.5%; if I can continue at this pace I will have made back the money I pissed away when I initially thought .... hell anyone can pick stocks.

The paper is expensive if you are not working with much money; but I started with $220k, lost $47k in three weeks and I am $8.5k from breaking even I could not have made without IBD. I do not buy the paper for the editorials I read it for investments.

So there is my testimonial, I hope it helps new investors and nay sayers. You have to commit to learning the system, I am in fact extremely impressed and can't wait to see what I can do as I continue to get better at understanding the system and continue to improve on my mistakes.

Good luck everyone and good investing.

Golf Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Golf MagazineI read both Golf & Golf Digest for years [I should practice & play more and read less about golf...] :-) But, in recent years, Golf Digest has strayed far from what I want in a golf magazine three examples: GD put in a fashion column [nobody I golf with has ever discussed golf clothing or styles!]; GD added a smarmy gossip column [trying to compete with the tabloids?]; GD no longer objectively reviews golf equipment [they now offer a "hot list" which amazingly enough coincides with their big advertisers]. Golf magazine has avoided these stupidities PLUS it has the spice of David Feherty's column despite the fact that it was cut in half a couple years back. Golf is now clearly superior to Golf Digest.

This magazine has good articles about golf and on golf instruction. The pictures on golf instruction are always very clear and not hard to follow. I think there are too many ads at times which I sometimes get tired of reading...

I recommend the following books on golf instruction that I found to be highly beneficial.

The first one is "Zen Golf", which shows the mental side of the game and makes playing golf easier in this aspect.

The second book I recommend on the physical aspect of golf is "The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better." This book really has some amazing and unique stuff about the golf swing. I finally scored below 80 because of this book.

Golf Magazine is definitely my favorite magazine on golf. I also love their issue every year on new golf equipment. This issue I find the best. It shows you how golfers with different handicaps perform with different clubs. It even shows clubhead speeds and measured driving distance of each person who is testing the clubs. I find this very interesting.

Buy Golf Magazine (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I've found GOLF magazine to be the best of the golf magazines available. The reasons I particularly like it are its very useful and well diagrammed golf tips, some of which have improved my play quite a bit in the last couple of years. I also like their feature articles which highlight a particular pro and analyze their swings and then illustrate how you can apply them to your game. Generally a magazine less interested in selling you new clubs than in teaching you how to play golf, GOLF is a solid read. They do at times stray into "my how awesome all these new clubs, balls, gloves, etc. are" (honestly when was the last time you saw a NEGATIVE review in any trade magazine???), but their recommendations based on your style of game are useful. Overall it is an excellent publication for any golfer from casual to obsessed.

Read Best Reviews of Golf Magazine (1-year auto-renewal) Here

For a golfer, no matter whether good or bad, Golf magazine is definitely a must. Golf magazine is literally packed full of tips and tricks that will help with their golf game, whether the trouble is their putting, sand shots, chipping,, driving, putting, or even just your stance or swing. By reading golf magazine, a golfer could easily shave strokes off of his or her game.

So what about non-golfers? Not a problem. Golf magazine is also full of very interesting articles and profiles about active golfers, celebrities who golf. Golf magazine is also full of very interesting facts, rules and statistics, that are also interesting to people who may not be involved in the game of golf. Golf magazine is also not for people of any specific age. I would definitely say Golf magazine is a good read for anyone from middle school, all the way to the elderly.

Golf magazine is a great subscription to have for one who is thinking about or trying to pick up the game as well. It is full of tips for beginners, and great product reviews. By picking up a Golf magazine, someone could find out what clubs and balls would be right for them to make an investment in. By reading one simple issue, one might find out not only what equipment would be best for them to use, but also how to properly hold the clubs, tee the balls, swing correctly, and so on. This is very convenient, because they would not just go start playing incorrectly, and they wouldn't have to pay thousands of dollars for expansive lessons by a course professional.
