Ask

AskAsk is an informative, high quality magazine for children that engages them as readers and learners. Since each issue is devoted to a particular theme, my students gain indepth information about a variety of topics. They are fascinated by the attractive format -which includes wonderful photographs, illustrations, and graphic aids that are appropriate for young readers. My students have eagerly written letters to the editor and entered the bi-monthly contests. I highly recommend Ask as an excellent magazine for school libraries, classrooms, and homes.

My elementary age kids are just beginning to understand the larger scope of the world and human knowledge. While in the process of looking for good magazines about current events I came across Ask, Muse and Dig. I signed up for a subscription to Ask in hopes that it would help my kids get that better understanding of the world of ideas. We've been quite pleased with it.

In that process of looking for good kids magazines we tried out a bunch of them, and got subscriptions to most. Here's my quick quick rundown

Kids Discover: heavy on pictures, light on words. The articles tend to be little snippets and factoids without context or much explanation.

National Geographic Kids: heavy on pictures, light on the words. Articles are a bit more in depth than Kids Discover.

Time for Kids: Thin and a bit flimsy, but comes frequently (every two weeks?) and covers major current events pretty well. Different versions are available for different ages. Order it from the Time for Kids web site since Amazon doesn't seem to carry it.

Dig: In depth interesting articles addressing history and society under the guise of archeology. Probably best for late elementary and middle school, and/or more thoughtful kids.

Ask and Muse: In depth interesting articles addressing all sorts of thoughtful topics. Probably best for late elementary and middle school, and/or more thoughtful kids.

Ask Magazine is another wonderful publication from the originators of Cricket. Ask is all about arts and sciences, with each issue having one unifying theme. The recommended age range is from seven to ten, but younger fluent readers can also enjoy Ask.

Ask contains regular features as well as a variety of articles related to the central theme. "Scoops" is a two page spread of science news and discoveries. One story might be on a robotic arm, another on the acquisition of language in sac-winged bats. "Nestor's Dock" is a double page cartoon with enjoyable recurring characters. Each issue also has a contest which ties in with the theme. The water issue asks readers to design a fountain, the learning issue requests that readers design a school, and an art issue invites readers to copy their favorite work of art. Winners have their entries printed in a future issue. "Jimmy and the Bug" is another regular feature. Here, readers questions are answered in cartoon format. Questions might appear simple, "Why do lions have manes?" or more complex, " what are the rings around planets made of?" Answers are both thoughtful and informative. Every issue ends with the silly but sweet cartoon, "Marvin and Friends", on the back cover.

The "Making Art" issue of Ask includes a lovely piece on quilting traditions in rural Alabama. Many beautiful photos of quilts are displayed alongside comments from their creators. In the same edition, "Playing with Mud" showcases delicate Korean celadon pottery.

"The Liquid of Life" issue of Ask has a fascinating story on water. It covers the water cycle, water forms, a water molecule diagram, and gorgeous photographs of a water droplet, snowflake, and children and animals in various poses with rain and snow. Information offered can be quite complex, but it is just the thing for feeding hungry young intellects. This issue also has water trivia cards, with intriguing questions such as, what can go longer without water, a camel, or a giraffe? An article on water powered generators is very well done, and the issue is rounded out with a nice tour of bogs, fens, swamps, and marshes.

I'm very pleased to recommend Ask. It's funny but not obnoxious, informative but not controversial, with articles a bit shorter and lighter than those found in big brother's Muse Magazine.

Camaro Performers

Camaro PerformersMy son loved this magazine for new ideas and learning about new products. We have only received one magazine in the past few months. If it turns out that we will only receive one magazine, I would not recommend this product at all for $19.95.

I have subscribed to this publication for many years now and I am never let down on the content. If you are in to any age Camaro, this is a great read!

This and other car magazines are a great gift for the man who likes and tinkers with cars. Now he's getting Mustang, Pontiac Performers, and this one to help him restore the three or four old classics from the 1960s and early 1970s that he's got in his home garage.

Women and Home

Women and HomeThis is my favorite magazine. There are short stories by popular authors, wearable fashions, and great articles. It seems that if I am interested in a subject, diet, how to publish online, travel, it is there.

For some reason this magazine has been shipped from South Africa and contains South African entertainment, articles, stores etc....not what I was expecting at all!

No where did I see it mentioned that it would be a South African publication waste of $118!!!!

Dell Horoscope - a Personal Daily Guide for Everyone

Dell Horoscope - a Personal Daily Guide for Everyone...bar none. And that includes The Mountain Astrologer. I'm a semi-pro and what I like best about this magazine is its appeal to all levels of astrological learning on FUN, practical and timely topics (Sun Sag/ASC Cap) written by knowledgable and well respected professionals. But with the skyrocketing costs of a physical subscription, I've had to switch over to having it delivered to my Kindle. For those of you considering this option, I must advise you that some of the important features at the back of the magazine are missing, like the monthly ephemeris, the daily aspect guide, etc. This is not a problem if, like me, you have an emphemeris or professional software. I still miss it, though...but am lucky to find the time to read each issue. The magazine also contains articles in varying lengths from quite lengthy to one page. My preference lies in between, but there is surely something for everyone. Enjoy!

I have always recommended this magazine to anyone who is interested in learning Astrology. If you're just starting out, you'll find wonderful articles every month by some of the more famous Astrologers and there is insight on every page. There are usually many up to date topics to read about and great book reviews.

It takes a great deal of money to put an Astrological Library together, so in the meantime, this magazine will give you loads of interesting chapters to absorb and astrological reference. Although I am a seasoned Astrologer with bookcases full of books, I still learn something every month from Dell Horoscope. Highly recommended indeed !!

Studio Bambini

Studio BambiniAlthough expensive, I decided to invest in this Australian subscription because I am a children's clothing designer. After 9 months went by without receiving my 1st issue, I called Amazon who called the distributor. They quickly sent me an issue. Three weeks later another issue arriveda duplicate of the one I already had gotten. I'm just too busy to deal with this sort of thing, so I simply resolved never to order a foreign subscription again. The magazine was OK, but not worth $56.20 for one issue!

Delicious Magazine

Delicious MagazineThis is a great magazine full of all kinds of recipies. Easy ones gourmet, mid-week, low fat. We have had a subscription for a year and we cook most of our meals from it. The only thing you need is to print out a converter as the recipies are done in the UK and are in grams not ounces. Order it. you won't regret it.

I absolutely fell in love with Delicious. while studying abroad in London. The recipes are (for the lack of a better word) absolutely delicious. I scoured high and dry in my tiny town to (somehow) find the newest issues. I was not let down and a subscription is definitely worth it :)

The amazing photography and use of bright colors within the magazine give it a great vibe and I look forward to reading it every month (it's almost like a fashion magazine for food :D). The recipes to be easier to make, but still as tasty, as other culinary magazines (I didn't renew my subscription to Food & Wine (1-year auto-renewal) since Delicious. has ruined me for all others ;)). I definitely make good use out of this magazine and am constantly trying and reusing recipes from here.

As the other reviewer as stated, you will need a conversion chart (or even a scale) to make these recipes since the measurements are Imperial but it's worth it!

I love this magazine. The photos are gorgeous. The food and recipes look "delicious". It's well written and a joy to read. It's just so damned expensive here in the US, it's cost prohibitive to subscribe to.

I became familiar with this magazine while we were in South Africa. It really raised my cooking game. The recipes are so much more intricate (but not that much more difficult) and more varied than in the US food magazines.

There's been a little bit of a dip, I think, since a new editor started; somehow her quest to "freshen it up" took some of the depth away from it, but I still think it's the best cooking/food magazine published. My second vote, surprisingly, is TASTE magazine, published by Woolworth's, which, in South Africa is a gourmet supermarket and classy department store. Both magazines really get your imagination going and inspire you to cook things that really are "over the top" without being ridiculously difficult. Given my work schedule, if I can't make it in 20 minutes (except for those very special occasions), I'm not interested.

Yes, the subscription is ridiculously expensive. It's something I consider an extravagance, but given how much of a positive effect it has had on our daily meals, and the fact that my husband doesn't even want to go to restaurants anymore "because your cooking is so much better," I figure we're coming out ahead economically. You can easily spend the same amount for a nice dinner these days and for the subscription cost of this magazine I get many, many more good meals out of it in a given year. I read it slowly, one page at a time, while eating. Always a pleasure.

If you just can't bring yourself to spend this much for the printed magazine, at least visit their website delicious.co.uk for some inspiration.

Reader's Digest (2-year)

Reader's DigestThis publication isn't what it used to be. I am 32 years old and for my entire (yes entire) life my family has subscribed to the Reader's Digest. It is the perfect ahem... restroom reading material because it contains short, well written stories that are either amusing, thought provoking, heart warming (or a combination of all three).

Now, every other page literally is an advertisement for a pharmaceutical product of some kind. The first thing I do when I receive my monthly copy is I rip out the ads. In doing so I'm usually left with LESS THAN HALF of the pages I started with. I feel like I'm paying for a monthly subscription to pharmaceutical ads. "Now, That's Outrageous!"

I'm so sad and disappointed. I won't be renewing my subscription next year and I feel like I've lost a lifelong friend. I hope my review helps you in your decision.

First off, I agree with what others have said about too many ads. That's partly what is keeping me from renewing it.

Overall..if it weren't for the ads, I would continue to enjoy this magazine because I love the humor, easy reading stories, information, etc.

However...when my subscription ends they keep calling and calling and CALLING me about renewing. Or saying "We hope you are enjoying your subscription to Readers Digest"..(when I'm not subscribed anymore). I tell them no, I'm not going to renew..the next day I come home with three calls on my answering machine from them. This is not a one time occurrence either.

The magazine itself is good. However I think they should either lower the price or drop some of the ads.

Buy Reader's Digest (2-year) Now

RD does have some interesting consumer & finance articles, but it has waa-a-a-y too many ads. I would never actually pay for it, but I do get a subscription as a gift every year. I end up ripping half the magazine's weight out in ads and no, that's not "just life" as some other reviewer said, it's downright shameful.

Also, make sure you get on the RD website and change your privacy preferences; like other second-rate companies who like to abuse customers, they implicitly assume you want to be spammed by them and have them rent your information out to third parties.

I've always loved this magazine, but I completely agree with the other reviewers... not ONLY are there entirely too many ads, but they make a FORTUNE selling your information. I was completely shocked at the amount of junk mail that started POURING in after I first subscribed to Reader's Digest. They should be ashamed of themselves. I do enjoy reading it, but refuse to renew out of principle.

Want Reader's Digest (2-year) Discount?

I bought this subscription to Readers Digest here at Amazon in January 2011 and didn't receive mt first issue until March 2011. Started getting renewal letters in with my magazine about 2 months ago and got to wondering when my subscription was ending? I looked here at Amazon and it says March 2013 which is correct then I looked at the label on my magazine and it says November 2012. What's going on here that is a 4 month difference in what I paid for and what I am actually receiving. So I contacted Amazon about this and they promptly shuffled me off to Readers Digest (Thanks Amazon)who gave me a song and dance story about how the May issue was a special issue and it was so much bigger that it counted as 2 issues. Well I pulled out my May issue and it has about 10 extra pages compared to the other issues. so shame on you Readers Digest for trying to rip off consumers and an even bigger shame on you Amazon for not standing behind what you are selling.
