I've been reading this magazine for years. Would pick it up, while visiting the Cape, knowing that someday I would buy/build at the Cape. Fabulous ideas. Many, many years later, my dream was realized. The decorating tips and ideas from this magazine were well-worth the cost of this magazine. I'm a big into recycling, so I pass this magazine (very reluctantly) to family...favorite magazine for many years...

Jems : Journal of Emergency Medical Services

I have subscribed to JEMS for more than 10 years now. It is the journal that all other EMS magazines are trying to be like. It has the nation's leaders in EMS contributing to articles. It has research, an annual survey of the biggest cities and their systems, an annual salary/workplace survey, reviews of equipment and vehicles, and it is involved in several annual conferences.

Lousy service there has been zero contact from the publisher as to whether they had received a subscription and when one might expect the subscription to begin

Texas Gardener

It's hard to find good information that really applies to Texas gardening. I enjoy lots of gardening magazines, but most of them are East-coast centric and simply don't apply to our state's unique gardening requirements. This magazine is excellent and just what I was looking for. I would recommend it to beginning or experienced gardeners alike.

I love this magazine. It's been a real help with my vegetable garden, giving a nice timeline of what and when to plant. The plant suggestions and advice, esp as regards to fruits and vegs, have been wonderful. It's pretty costly IMHO but on the plus side, there are very few ads, unlike Mother Earth News or BHG. All in all, a great magazine for the Texas gardener.

Whisky Advocate

I find myself wishing frequently that Malt Advocate were a monthly magazine. Excellent in-depth coverage of whiskies and good coverage of other spirits and beers. MA has led me to many great discoveries in the world of whiskey (and whisky). Very educational and easy to read. Strongly recommended for someone who wants to broaden their knowledge of malted spirits.

Malt Advocate magazine is a great whisky magazine, and they're based in the U.S., unlike another popular whisky magazine. Don't get me wrong, though, they cover whiskies from all around the world. The articles are timely and informative. The publisher, John Hansell, is well respected in the whisky world, and he thoughtfully reviews many whiskies in each issue. The folks I've talked to who are subscribers read every issue from cover to cover, it's that good.

Southern Living (1-year auto-renewal)

Like others, even though I don't live in the South. I have been a subscriber for over 30 years. What they have done to this magazine is a travesty. The things that made Southern Living special (and why so many of us saved old issues) are all gone. The articles are interchangable with the articles in any of a dozen other magazines. For all I know, the articles are written by a bunch of folks in NYC who have never set foot south of the Mason-Dixon line!

Having grown up in the heart of Dixie, I've read this magazine all my life, and I preceded its birth by over 10 years. Still have the entire 1974 year down in the ol' homestead (an ultramodern 1970s brick house) in an old cardboard slipcase. It was a wonderful magazine in the 1970s and even into the early 1980s. Today, it is pure garbage. Do not waste your money on a subscription. If you buy one issue, you'll have all the advertising you need, but you'll actually get better advertising of Southern lifestyles by picking up free flyers at various interstate welcome stations. In fact, Southern Living now resembles a magazine comprising interstate brochure writing sandwiched between so many advertisements you cannot make sense of the editorial. I know what I'm talking about. Since it was purchased more than a decade ago by Time-Life, Southern Living has gone steadily downhill. If you want a gardening magazing for the south, choose Garden Gate or Fine Gardening. Or buy books. It's cheaper. If you need travel information, use the internet. If you want home design, forget it. In the 1970s you had houseplans, beautiful landscape designs and decorating ideas. Today, you can get better ideas from a standard like Good Housekeeping or by watching home and garden shows on television. It's really sad how pathetic Southern Living is. If I were employed there as a writer -and it is not my niche by any means, professional corporate writing is -I would be a lifeless card-punching automaton regurgitating segment marketing pap. Pulp. Garbage. You can't even wrap a decent mullet with this piece of garbage, they've shrunk the page size.

Who said Southern Living needed to be changed? Shame on those who took a delightful magazine from wonderful to wanting. I've been a SL subscriber for years. Every Southern woman has to have it. It took a dip in quality in the past five years, but with a new editor the content is becoming more abundant. I look forward to it each month! Purchasing magazines through Amazon are often a lot cheaper than the offers you will get directly from the company. I even tried to renew one year asking SL to match the price that Amazon was offering, but they wouldn't do it.

I'm assuming the changes in Southern Living happened because of the state of the magazine industry, but it's such a shame. SL use to be one of the best. I don't live in the South, but really enjoyed the great articles, travel stories, unique recipes, decorating ideas and beautiful photos. Also liked the fact that the magazine carried its share of ads, but I didn't feel like I was paying for a book of advertising with few articles, the way I do with many magazines.

Now, all that is gone. I don't really even recognize the magazine anymore. Ridiculously short articles with little content, recipes that I've seen a zillion times, nothing really inventive or even fresh, just recycled, watered-down content. The cover photos are the only thing that is as lovely as ever. SL now looks like every other magazine on the stand, even worse than many. Why in the world? Is this what it takes to get readers and advertisers? I can't imagine. I'm hoping that SL doesn't go under, but cannot imagine that this change will help it stay afloat. Sad that it already seems to be gone. Very unfortunate.

Grassroots Motorsports

I've been reading Grassroots Motorsports for some time now. I think that many who see it assume it is ALL about racing. Guess what? You're wrong!

If you are a "tuner" type, this might not be the magazine for you, but "tuner" features have existed in the mag. If you want to see bling or scantily clad young women, you won't find it in here. Go buy yourself a Pl*yboy instead. If you are looking for car audio, there are plenty of magazines out there.

But, if you are a car person (guy or gal), enjoy your car, love driving, maybe want to race in a controlled enviroment or become a better driver----THIS IS THE MAG FOR YOU!

Many of the technical and car build features are race specific, but most can easily be translated for use in cars for spirited driving on the street. Regular "Project Car" builds, some of which are essentially "practical race cars" or "street cars" and updates are include. Regular car "profiles" are presented as well. Features regarding the explaination of such things as tire fitment and pressure, shock replacement choice, etc can be found in almost every issue.

Much time is spent encouraging responsible auto racing (if there is such a thing), and no credence is given to the street racer scene. Racing belongs in a closed course, not subjecting the general public to possible peril.

If you think that the title "Grassroots Motorsports" is not descriptive, think again. The lowly Yugo has even made it into the pages, and annual "$2xxx Challenges" occur where there is a limit to the cost of the car entering---pretty much anyone can enter (but alas it is held in Florida) How much more grassroots can it be?. This is not racing snobbery, but racing accessibility for everyone ---even "go" carts and slot cars. Good coverage of amateur racing at all levels is a mainstay in the magazine as well.

Regardless of your age, gender, car (Fireflys , Sprints, Yugos are welcome in the pages), or driving competence there is something for everyone in this mag. Want to talk about varied? Where else would you see a Honda Odessey vs. Porsche 356 vs. Jaguare XKE comparison (sorry Road and Track, Car and Driver, and Automobile magazines)?

Don't listen to me! Find out for yourself.

Grassroots Motorsports and its sister publication Classic Motorsports Magazine are in my mind two of the best automotive publications out there. The articles are very informative, and written in a way that any enthusiast will enjoy them. No matter what their level of ability is. Reading these two magazines is like sitting in the garage listening to a friend tell you of their latest automotive adventures. This in itself would be enough to make them a must buy for me.

What really makes these two publications special is the community that is built around them. If you take the time to stop by the magazines message boards located at & you will start to get the sense of family that surrounds these two titles. These two titles are staffed by people who are our friends. Why shouldn't they be, they are all car nuts just like us.

Green Magazine

This publication has been in business for over 24 years and whenever I call to order items or renew, they are friendly and my order is taken care of very promptly. Articles and ads are informative and useful for those who want to restore their tractor, or just find a gift item for a John Deere enthusiast. The magazine is mailed monthly and always mailed on time to hopefully deliver when it should to my mailbox. Over the years the issues just increase in pages, with articles and advertising needed to find parts, services, or other items.

I am a relatively new owner of an antique John Deere tractor, but not new to restorations of antique cars. I was looking for a magazine with lots of restoration tips, lots of dealers for "those hard to find parts" and lots of photos of old tractors, farm machines, etc. This magazine seems to have all these qualities to some degree at least. It just needs more of everything to make it a 5 star rating for me.

I have noticed this magazine seems to be mostly ads and has very little content. I have read it a few times but do not think it is worth subscribing . I also noticed some errors in some of the advice given. I want more accurate information than this provides for restoring my tractor.

Sci-Fi

Sci Fi Magazine is billed as the official magazine of the Science Fiction Channel. However, you should know that this magazine covers more than just science fiction and much more than the Science Fiction Channel. There is coverage of horror, fantasy, related video games, and books.

The two most extensive areas of coverage for the magazine are movies and television. In the issue I received were articles on new movies and current and planned television series. In case you think that this magazine is one big advertisement for this type of entertainment, think again. One article used the term "shlock-fest" to describe a movie (that I too think could be described by that terminology). Some articles are more in-depth than others, with some being short summaries, and others including quotes from directors, producers and actors.

In addition to the coverage of movies and television, DVD releases are covered. Included in many of the reviewing articles are grades so that you clearly know what the reviewer thought about the movie. While in the particular edition I reviewed I did not see any "Fs," I did see one "D." I will leave you to find which movies receive such a poor grade yourself, though I will also tell you that I agreed with all the grades with the exception of one.

I was impressed that this magazine covered books as well as video games. It seems to me that most magazines cover video games these days, so there was little surprise there, but when a magazine that appears to heavily weighted to television and movies covers books, even if the coverage was limited to one section, then Sci Fi Magazine truly makes all media related to the genre its own.

Having moved away from current video games, I am unable to speak about the quality of the video game reviews. However, once again there were grades for each of the video games, with enough explanation why the grade was received to justify the grade. One article about a certain video game based on a mega-hit fantasy trilogy explained that the graphics were incredible, justifying a higher grade, but the game play was sometimes tedious because you had to find a specific character during a battle (involving hundreds?) at exactly the right time, which kept the game from being a winner.

I stress again that this magazine covers more than just science fiction. In fact, I would say that the issue I reviewed contained more horror than science fiction, and about as much fantasy as science fiction. The magazine includes animé its scope as well. There was a tantalizing article about the impending release of early Miyazaki films (though the article stressed that the release had been delayed several times, so you should not hold your breath note that reviews are time capsules, so the early Miyazaki might have been released by the time you read this).

The editors and authors of this magazine are well versed in all these genres, and are readily able to relate the history of a particular film and its predecessors, as well as directors and actors, and any other individuals involved in a particular form of entertainment.

I have struggled to find a media magazine that talks intelligently to a reader about things they find interesting, versus whether they are dating or the clothes they wear and other mundane, irrelevant trivia. What I want to know is whether the movie, television show, video game, DVD, book, or whatever, is any good. What was the director's vision? Explain more what the actors have to say about the film, assuming they have something intelligent to say. While Sci Fi Magazine has a few minor annoyances (there were a couple of actor's quotes that related more to irrelevancies than something substantive), in general this magazine is the best single source of coverage for science fiction, fantasy, horror and animé movies, television, and DVDs, with additional coverage of video games and books. Once you try this magazine you may find yourself addicted.

I have always wondered about the magazine but never read one until recently. I loved the articles and was surprized by the fact there is more than Sci Fi & Fantasy listed in this magazine. It was nice having a preview of TV shows I watch (although some of the material had already aired prior to the magazine coming out). I have even picked up a couple of books from the reviews in the magazine (and I am not a big Sci Fi/Fantasy book reader). I wish I had subscribed long ago.

Houses : Ah

This magazine has some wonderful architecture and modern design. If you like modernism or are planning to build a modern style home, this is the magazine for you. It has floorplans and square footage of the featured homes. In many instances, it also tells what the homes cost to build.

I get these for $9.95 from my local bookstores. They don't cost anywhere near the price quoted here.

I bought this magazine at a local bookstore in California, and I found it very well edited and designed. The articles have the all the most important information about each project (which many house design magazines lack), and it displays a variety of contemporary modern designs and techniques that can inspire those looking for liveability with style. Highly recommended even if you do not live in Australia, where it is published.

I have received 3 of the magazines so far, and I have been pretty disappointed. But maybe that's just me. I am a potter that does a lot of hand-building, and this book usually has only 1 pottery idea, and it has been nothing spectactular or very original so far. Has ideas for ceramic artists, about painting their greenware, but even some of that seems tacky. I was hoping for some fun, new creative ideas, but so far have not seen that. Lots of advertising.

Intermezzo Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

My experience has been like that of so many others -I received one issue, and that was about 5 months after my subscription was paid for. That was over a year ago. I have kept a record of email correspondence between myself and Roseanne Tully, the publisher. At one point she forwarded my request for subscription cancellation and a refund to someone (presumably) at her organization. I have yet to receive a refund. This is NOT a bona fide periodical; it's a seldom-published, self-serving magazine.

This magazine does not come out bimonthly. It will take more than two years to receive the six issues that you are supposed to receive in one year. Photography is nice but come on, who wants to subscribe to a magazine that can't keep to a publishing schedule.

I have been reading this publication for some time now and as a member of the glass community I have found this to be the most informative source in the industry. With articals about not only glassworkers from every field, but how and what they make, this periodical is unserpassed in instructional and informative pictures and discriptions on a wide range of subjects. Siempre Mujer (2-year)

I'm working on learning Spanish. I figured this magazine would be very helpful in improving my reading skills. It has so far. It's a typical women's magazine with articles about beauty, fashion, relationships, and family issues. It also frequenlty includes an interview with a celebrity. I would recommend this to any woman who wants to improve her Spanish skills.

Purchased a year of Siempre Mujer for my bff who likes Latino magazines. This is the first Latino magazine she's received that's actually written in Spanish, she told me. It is something like Good Housekeeping...meaning articles about various topics. After she'd received an issue or two, I saw a sale somewhere for another year of the magazine and asked if she'd like it renewed, and she said yes. She's not big into reading, so I take it to mean this is an enjoyable magazine.

Cooking Light (1-year auto-renewal)

Cooking Light used to be one of my favorite magazines because it had genuinely light recipes that were both healthful and tasty. Over the years the recipes somehow got more and more fattening and the articles more boring, but I still always found recipes I liked in every issue. I never liked the "lifestyle" articles as they took up the entire first half of the magazine and were a complete bore, in my opinion. But still, it was one of my favorite magazines.

I had let my subscription lapse for several months when I got an invitation from Amazon for a $5.00 rate for one year. It was too good to pass up so I went for it. Well, when I got my first issue it became immediately apparent to me that this was not the same magazine that I had known and loved for so long. I then learned that the entire editorial staff was fired last year and a new one put in its place. That, plus the entire format of the magazine had been completely overhauled.

Don't get me wrong Some of the changes are positive and I think CL can theoretically benefit from some sort of redesign. I like the new color photo with each recipe, plus the type fonts and layout are in general more up to date and pleasant to look at. In addition, the "lifestyle and fitness" section that ate up the entire first half of the magazine is gone and the recipes are more spread out amongst more concise, "bullet point" style one page articles. That to me is both good and bad The layout is better and the boring stuff is gone from the first half of the magazine, but the information in the new "sound byte" articles is not really that interesting nor informative and at times even the longer articles are just ho-hum. Plus, gone are the letters to the editor and some of the reader input articles that were a part of the old format.

On top of that, the recipes themselves show no sign of getting any lighter. In fact they seem to be getting heavier and heavier That is, more calories and fat in every serving than ever before. And the types of recipes are heavily weighted towards comfort foods, the kinds of which are impossible to get down to anything below 20 grams of fat per serving. 20 grams of fat per serving, people!!! Is this light cooking? I don't think so! At least if you're going to make a magazine about light cooking, give people what you say you're giving them. I can find 20 gram of fat recipes in any cooking magazine. Why do I need this one? I'm not asking for ridiculously low counts, but something hovering about 10 grams of fat would be fine. What made Cooking Light a great magazine is that it was different from all the rest. Now it is just more of the same. Ho hum, I can get that anywhere.

The irony of it is that the other day I found the November issue of CL in my doctor's office. Inside was a "sound byte" article encouraging us to "make peace with those few extra pounds". I guess this is some sort of propaganda to justify the higher fat and calorie counts in their supposedly "light" recipes. And the truly ironic part is that if I make those recipes I surely WILL have to make peace with a few extra pounds, LOL!

By the way, what's up with people rating the magazine without even having read it yet? I don't get that. If you haven't read it yet, you can't critique it. And by the way, Amazon was very clear that it could take up to 10 weeks or so to receive your first issue. Duh, that is only par for the course with magazines in general in my experience.

I have been a huge fan of COOKING LIGHT magazine for the past few years. I started reading it when I would visit my folks over the holidays. I borrowed a copy of one of my mom's CL issues and loved the results I got when I tried the Korean Bolgoi (grilled strips of beef in a sweet, salty marinade). I was immediately hooked on the magazine. I eventually started receiving a subscription to COOKING LIGHT. I have been a subscriber to both BON APPETIT and GOURMET magazines, let me just say that I think COOKING LIGHT is vastly superior to those magazines (although I do like reading them) because the recipes are not so high end (i.e expensive) and involves expensive, hard to find ingredients. I also enjoy the health tips and articles the magazine provides. I have tried a lot of recipes from COOKING LIGHT and they are all delicious as well as healthy. This magazine is not just about eating healthy but staying healthy too.

I've been receiving Cooking Light Magazine for about 8 years now. It was my Bible. I cook from scratch A LOT and everyone knew that every single, solitary recipe I made came from Cooking Light...until now. Over the course of the last year the magazine took a turn for the worse when it comes to providing good, solid, HEALTHY recipes! Healthy, Light...that is the point of the magazine, isn't it? I can find recipes in every other cookbook out there that have dinners with 15+ grams of fat for one small serving! For instance, in the most recent Dec 2010 edition there is a Truffled Wild Mushroom lasagna. Sounds delish, right? Well, why wouldn't it be when one small serving has 424 calorie and 18g of fat!

And in an effort to include different types of foods, there is often page after page of obsecure recipes that ask for items that are very expensive and hard to find (and I live in Chicago next to the country's largest Whole Foods!)

If you are interested in 'cooking light' may I suggest the magazine 'Healthy Cooking'. I've only received 2 magazines so far but seriously folded over nearly every page in the magazines indicating the recipes I want to try!

Just a warning to would be subscribers to Cooking Light Magazine. Cooking Light (1-year)

We have subscribed to Cooking Light for several years and have always renewed our subscription by mail paying by check. So it was with some surprise when we received from Cooking Light what was titled an "Automatic Renewal Program" notice. It stated that our subscription that was scheduled to expire in four months would be automatically renewed in six weeks with a charge to our credit card unless we took our time to telephone them and cancel before that date. When we telephoned Cooking Light they informed me that since they did not have a credit card on file they would have simply automatically renewed the subscription anyway as described in the letter and "billed me accordingly" and I would be liable for the bill, if we had not telephoned to cancel the automatic renewal.

We not only cancelled the automatic renewal but were upset enough about their business practices to cancel the remaining 4 months on our subscription. (The phone call and cancellation took place on the date of this review and our subscription was paid up through the March issue) We were informed that since they had already "labeled the February issue" they would only refund one issue and we should expect a check for $2.00 in the mail. Note our experience in relationship to the statement above about Amazon's cancellation policy for this magazine which says a full refund will be made for "unshipped issues." Simply not true.

In any event, buyers should be very cautious about giving a magazine their credit card for payment as it will likely lead to automatic renewals in the future, and, in the unfortunate case of Cooking Light Magazine, they will obligate you for automatic renewals in the future even if they do not have your credit card on file.

I subscribed to Cooking Light for almost ten years, and thought the magazine was fantastic. I loved that the recipes were healthy and delicious at the same time, and I would try at least two or three dishes from every issue. Every single recipe I tried turned out great. I even bought gift subscriptions for friends and family.

Then everything changed. Cooking Light became far more of a lifestyle magazine and far less of a cooking magazine. I tolerated this up to a point, until I realized there were fewer recipes that appealed to me in each issue, and the ones I did make were disappointing at best. The complete design overhaul was the last straw half the time, I can't tell the recipes from the ads anymore!

When my subscription ran out a couple of months ago, I didn't even consider renewing it. If Cooking Light ever returns to what it used to be, I'll be among the first to sign up. Until then, I'll spend my money on magazines that actually focus on food.
