Barrs Post Card News

Barrs Post Card NewsStarting a new subscription for Barrs Post Card News was so easy. Absolutely not a bit of trouble. I recommend this as the only way to subscribe to any magazine!

Not a bad magazine for the price. Thought it would contain a bit more information but there's not that many books/magazines out there for postcards that I've found so it'll do. It is giving me sources for information so that's a big help as I'm just getting back into postcard collecting and selling after about 10 years away. Would have liked to have seen something with a bit more pricing information.

Slimming World

Slimming WorldThis is a great magazine that explains how the Slimming World program works, provides yummy recipes, and presents real-life success stories that are truly inspiring. Some of them are just about unbelievable. The articles are great, relevant.. and are presented in a compassionate way that so many other weight-loss and fitness magazines lack.

I've been on this program for three weeks... and have even cheated terribly several times (only one... possibly two meals a week). This was only because I was out with family and couldn't get food the way I wanted. That being said, I literally STUFF MY FACE with food the rest of the time. I'm a food-noshing MACHINE!! Ready for this?? I know it's not typical (most lose 2-3/wk), but I've lost 18 pounds in 3 weeks!! I'm sure that's partially because I have so much to lose (over 100 pounds), and because the times I didn't cheat, I followed the plan very closely. Honestly, it's not hard to follow, and because so many foods are unlimited (yes... I said UNLIMITED) I'm always satisfied.

No foolin'... this is the EASIEST, most effective thing I've ever tried. I have friends on other plans, but I want to slap my forehead when I see all the point-counting, carb counting and calorie counting they have to do.

It's taught me a liberating truth, folks... FOOD IS NOT THE ENEMY. It's the way we've learned to prepare it and cover it with fat and sugar-laden condiments that's the enemy. Many sauces you can make from fat-free plain yogurt, fat-free cottage cheese, and fat-free sour cream. After a couple weeks of eating that way, the heavy stuff (the way most of America prepares it) tastes.... icky. Gives me a tummy ache.

I was considering lap band before I found this... and I'm thanking God a friend turned me on to this. It's changed my life already!! This program is the light that leads to the end of a long, lonely tunnel. There are people all along the way, cheering you on. It doesn't get any better than this!

Intersec

Intersec"INTERSEC" is one magazine that is absolutely indispensable for a macro view of the worldwide security industry. The magazine covers the whole range of security issues including the terrorist threat, human trafficking, emergency planning, economic crime, security technology, security operations and management.

This is an enlightening magazine which is a valuable asset for those involved in security. It has well written feature articles, special reports, commentary, trends and news on security issues written by well informed journalism.

It is the most important magazine I read professionally on security issues. If you are involved in security anywhere in the world, this is one magazine you must read to know what is really going on.

Horse Illustrated (1-year auto-renewal)

Horse IllustratedI have been a subscriber to Horse Illustrated for many years, and have always praised it. The magazine was originally published with well written and thoughtful articles that covered both Western and English ridding, general horse care, and gave very helpful tips. But within the past couple of years the quality of the publication has gone downhill.

Not only has the magazine thinned out but the articles have become biased and poorly written. Adds and articles promoting a single product occupy more of the magazine than ever before and the shift from a well rounded equine magazine to 'snob mag' is quite clear. The majority of the magazine is now aimed towards the English rider with an eye for fashion. What where once helpful tips have now become one sided suggestions.

This magazine would be a welcome addition for a horse-crazy teen who is more likely to have a new car than a horse. But if you are looking for something with a bit more substance, advice, and general tips, this is not the magazine for you.

I started reading Horse Illustrated (HI) when I was a horse-crazy kid and I loved it. But now that I'm an adult and have gotten more serious with my riding, HI doesn't cut it anymore. It caters to both western and English riders and provides general horse care information. That means if you're looking for in-depth riding articles, you'll want to try discipline specific magazines like Practical Horseman, Dressage Today, or Horse & Rider instead.

My biggest gripe with HI is that none of the articles stick with you. Nearly every topic the magazine covers can be found in any horse care book. Also, the magazine is rather thin with LOTS of ads and breeder listings in the back.

The bottom line: If you love horses and just want a general horsey mag, you'll like HI. If you want to read something that goes more in-depth, you might want to look elsewhere.

HI is the industry's fashion magazine. There isn't really any depth, you just look at it for the pictures. Sometimes there's nothing wrong with that though.

This magazine really scratches an itch when it comes to beautiful horse photos and individual breed studies, not to mention the excellent horse training articles and very important horse care information contained in each monthly edition. The attractive layout and precious letters from horsey readers (I was especially touched by the letters from owners of older horses) makes this magazine a great pick for horse-lovers of all kinds -owners and non-owners, and very enlightening for wanna-be-owners. The advertising section in the back of the magazine is a great resource for locating breeders, tack and supplies, where to go for a weekend getaway on horse-back, and even schools that offer education in Vet/Farrier fields. I give Horse Illustrated a BLUE RIBBON!

This magazine is another must have for anyone who loves horses and wants to learn more about their care. As with Equus it is highly educational and enjoyable. As an Equine Science student, this magazine augments my studies.

Street Rodder (1-year auto-renewal)

Street RodderI renew this every year for my dad for his birthday. He's building a 32' Ford from scratch. This is his favorite mag!

I subscribed for my husband who builds street rods. He likes it and I enjoy it too. I recommend it! Way less expensive to order through Amazon than the magazine subscription price!

Down Under Quilts

Down Under QuiltsBeautiful magazine and it is really great getting to know the world of quilters better. I have found that quilters everywhere have great hearts towards others. I have been buying from the newstands; but really need to subscribe to it. rjcravy

I absolutely echo the first review written by MawMawTX in April...I have been purchasing this magazine from newstands but sometimes it's not easy to find, and I am subscribing today...it will be hard to wait to receive my first issue. The photos are wonderful, and reading about quilters on the other side of the world really enlarges the world...it's nice to see other quilters' designs and ideas.

Marie Claire Maison - France

Marie Claire Maison - FranceReading Marie Claire Maison over stolen afternoons at the Alliance Française library in Santo Domingo was my ideal oasis from the grind of the sticky hot city and my leaky rental apartment (with matching leaky budget). The designs consistently feature eclectic materials that make you look at objects around you with an artist's eye to composition, contrast, light and mood. It also stokes the flames of thrift shopping or dumpster diving to unearth beautiful and underappreciated objects to spotlight in your home. It was a wonderful way to improve my French vocabulary and to draw back the curtain on French homes and mindsets. You can't go back to matchy-matchy design magazines after this. Vive Marie-Claire Maison !

These magazines are published in different countries such as Italy and France. I did not know that. I wanted to purchase the Italian version and until I received it, did not know that it was also published in French-a bit of a surprise. I did enjoy the magazine though-the pictures were nice. Wish I knew how to get my hands on the Italian version though. Also wish the information was clearly marked when ordering. The writing was too small for me to determine that it was a French, not Italian, magazine I ordered.

Analog Science Fiction & Fact

Analog Science Fiction & FactAnalog brings a dependable collection of hard-science fiction stories, novellas, and frequently, a serialized novel. Almost all of them are worth reading; I'm having trouble thinking of an Analog story that made me give up before reaching the end. While its sister publication Asimov's tends more to the social-SF or more literary forms, Analog sticks to a formula of hard-SF with some recurring features: one factual science article, one speculative science article, and a short SF humor piece (Probability Zero). Analog also has a lively letters column, where editor Stanley Schmidt or the story authors often reply. And Schmidt's editorials are always a good read.

Some of the factual science articles well-compliment the stories, some just don't have any relation (and if I skip anything in Analog, it's some of the drier fact pieces). Some excellent write-ups such as a comparison between long-term weather data and historical regime changes could lead to several future stories in the magazine.

Dependable, high-quality, and enjoyable.

One change in publication not mentioned here: both Analog and Asimov's have gone to 10 issues a year from 11, with 2 "double issues" instead of one per year. The double issue is always a treat but then one must wait 2 months for the next regular issue!

Disclaimer up front: I've had three novels serialized in ANALOG (Nebula winner THE TERMINAL EXPERIMENT; Hugo and Nebula nominee STARPLEX; and the just-completed HOMINIDS). But I'm also a long-time reader of the magazine (28 years now), and I love it. The fiction is real SF -stories in which the science is accurate and the speculation credible. But I also love the editorials by Stanley Schmidt; the "Alternate View" columns by Jeff Kooistra and John Cramer (some of the best science writing available anywhere these days), the spirited letters-to-the-editors section, and Tom Easton's book reviews. This is the number-one bestselling science-fiction magazine in the world, and justly so.

(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)I can't tell you how many great science fiction writers I discovered through reading Analog. My first Larry Niven story was in Analog, as well as my first Spider Robinson story. Most of the greats got their start here, and many of them continue writing a story for Analog now and then.

The short story is a good friend to science fiction. It allows for the exploring of an idea without the need to "fill it out" to novel length. This magazine has a nice blend of stories, articles and comic strips. Novel length stories are serialized, and arrive in chapter form. The letter column is often as much fun to read as the stories.

As with any anthology, Analog contains it's share of "misses." The good far outweighs the bad, and I strongly recommend it as a subscription.

I've been a subscriber for about 40 years, from when it was named Astounding, and almost never disappointed. In addition to great authors (many of whom I met first on Astounding/Analog pages), great short stories, reviews, and feedback don't miss the thought provoking editorials. No matter who is the current editor, the editorials make you check your firmly held beliefs and preconceived notions, and *think*. You may not agree, but you'll definitely think. Well worth the money.

For a long time I subscribed to both ANALOG and Asimov's Science Fiction but recently decided to drop the Analog. The stories are not as good in my opinion (as evidenced by fewer awards won), and a lot of space is given over to "fact" articles which didn't much interest me, especially since a lot of the news presented in those articles I had already heard before. So when it came time to cut my budget, I chose to keep Asimov's which offers approximately one more fiction story per month.

Of course if Asimov's did not exist, then Analog would definitely be on my first choice. Both are fine literary magazines.
