News China

News ChinaAs a Chinese-American who has been residing in the states for almost a decade, I find most publications to be polarizing. They are either so anti-china to omit anything that has to do with its economic development and exaggerate in terms of their "human rights" violations: most notably the "correctional facilities for fa lung gong practioners". or only exalt the huge strides theyre making economically, omitting any social issues.

I find this publication to be the least biased one i have came across on China. It explored both sides of the issue. it explored topics i do not want to think about my homeland such as "involuntary hospitalization" and racism towards minorities. it has a very balanced account of all of today's happenings in China.

good thing all LA county libraries have this publication. no need to pay a dime.

This magazine is surprisingly enjoyable. People living in the US or Canada who have a connection with mainland China will be pleased with the variety and depth of the news presented each month. This is not a magazine that says "Rah Rah China" all the time either, it often exposes the missteps of business and political leaders, the current (and true) state of all Chinese society in general, and interesting coverage of the Chinese cinematic industry and the arts. All and all, a worthwhile magazine for anyone interested in Chinese current events.

It felt like the language barrier was gone, and I was reading a Chinese version of Forbes, or whatever. It comes out monthly, so I ended up reading it cover to cover. I had always felt desperately in need of more information on the worlds, soon to be, biggest economy. Now I feel I have it. Who would have thought, that after all or those books, after Rosetta Stone Mandarin, and all I could get my hands on, (plus a ton of money) it was really just a subscription to some obscure monthly that I needed! My thanks to the Brooklyn Public Library for having a copy in my local branch, at one time, for exposing me to this fascinating resource.

Sister 2 Sister

Sister 2 SisterI swear if it were possible I would give this magazine zero stars. I read an issue of this magazine not too long ago and it was just awful. They claim to be a magazine for today's black woman but if today's woman is obsessed with hair, makeup, how to make it good for your man, perpetuating the video girl image and the other usual, boring crap one reads in most women's magazines, then I would rather not be a black woman! As I flipped through the issue, I felt like it was a veiled, and thinly veiled, attempt at trying to turn me into the stereotypical video girl. You know the type, the chick in the club wearing barely anything, brainless, and is basically there to be a trophy for her wannabe ain't neva gonnabe thuggin man!

Believe it or not, I only encountered two articles of substance. One that stands out is about women who don't want to have children. And even that article wasn't in depth enough. If you want a good magazine, try Pink, Oprah's or Essence. Yeah, Oprah's mentions fashion and occassionally mentions how to have better sex, but notice that a HUGE majority of the magazine has a lot of substance.

Unlike this pathetic excuse for a magazine, the others actually realize that you have a mind and you want to use it. They realize that not only do you desire to improve yourself but also the state of the world. Sister 2 Sister actually makes me embarassed to be black! When are we ever going to move beyond the video girl image? When will the black community ever stop perpetuating this ridiculous image and expecting all of us to be these fantasy women?

subscribed through magazines.com, for one year, after six months no delivery. when i complained to magazines.com, StS offer 1 (!) issue extension and no credit for undelivered issues. Neither StS nor magazines would give refund

This is a good entertainment magazine for black women. Sister 2 Sister always features the best interviews. Jamie Foster Brown really knows how to connect with the celebs and gets them to spill things they otherwise wouldn't. You don't get those generic PC responses that a lot of other magazines get. This magazine just has more....uh, soul? I dont get that slick sold out feel that I do from other more majorly popular black female magazines. Most unintentionally hilarious random fact is that every issue they feature an advice column by Tami Roman. Yes Tami "hoodrat" Roman from Basketball Wives Miami fame actually gives advice to others LMAO. But overall I'd really advise you to become a subscriber if you aren't already. Sister 2 Sister may be less well known but it's the best magazine I've come across in a long time.

Intersec

Intersec"INTERSEC" is one magazine that is absolutely indispensable for a macro view of the worldwide security industry. The magazine covers the whole range of security issues including the terrorist threat, human trafficking, emergency planning, economic crime, security technology, security operations and management.

This is an enlightening magazine which is a valuable asset for those involved in security. It has well written feature articles, special reports, commentary, trends and news on security issues written by well informed journalism.

It is the most important magazine I read professionally on security issues. If you are involved in security anywhere in the world, this is one magazine you must read to know what is really going on.

Classic Toy Trains

Classic Toy TrainsIf you love toy trains, then this is for you. I enjoy this magaine very much. But I have two complaints. First is the price of the subscription. To me it is over priced. But the publisher is over priced on all their magazines. Problem is they are good magazines, so you end up paying it, sometimes. There are times I just can't afford it. I will say their are other sellers of this magazine that have a much better price. But it is still salty in todays market. he other complaint is it is only 9 issues. I don't normally do reviews, but I saw no one had done one for this magaine and felt I had to do it. Got to stick up for those who support our O gauge toy trains. I do have HO trains as well and do get Model Railroader as well, when I can afford it.This magazine is better than Model Railroader in my opinion. My wife yells at me all the time about all the magazines I have around. But I don't want to get rid of them.

Gq - Italian Edition

Gq - Italian EditionI am absolutely addicted to this magazine. It is great for practicing your reading comprehension and, as an added benefit, provides a good exposure to the current events/fashion/culture etc in Italy.

The only bad thing about this subscription is its price. Luckily, I live in New York and can pick up a copy at Barnes&Noble for less than $10. It's about $40 off the annual subscription... It is simply doesn't make sense for me to subscribe, but I would if I didn't have access to the store.

I subscibed to this magazine for a year and I enjoyed it a lot. I have some difficulty reading and understanding the articles but needed to learn. I didn't keep the subscription though because it went higher. I reccommend if you can afford the import premiums.

Orange Coast (1-year automatic renewal)

Orange CoastI don't get it. It's one of those magazines that you should be able to pick up for free in front of your local pizza place or bar. There are a lot of ads for Orange County plastic surgeons and dating services; if you're looking for either of those, this ones for you.

Alaska Quarterly Review

Alaska Quarterly ReviewI find it quite funny that almost 3000 people have posted a review for the DaVinci Code, and no one has reviewed AQR, one of the world's foremost forums of contemporary literature. As a reader of short stories I can say the 30 or so stories published each year in this magazine help set the trend for fiction writing, consistently, year on year. Some of these stories are simply magnificent the best I've read anywhere. Journals like this are terribly under-rated, and their only objective is to produce the highest quality writing. There is negligible payout and no profit involved. This is art here, folks, in the truest sense of the word.

AudioFile

AudioFileAs someone who loves to read, and finds it increasingly difficult to find time to do so in a time crunched world, I rely on Audiofile magazine to point me in the direction of what will provide a great listening experience. It provides reviews which I find are very accurate and illuminating. Through the magazine I have been guided to many authors, narrators and subjects that I might previously have been unaware of, or overlooked. The review section covers several different categories of book in every issue, describing content, and highlighting excellence.Sometimes the authors of a book will be interviewed with the review of a narrators work side by side. This I find fascinating.

The articles give an insider look at an ever changing industry, and "connect up the dots" of this fascinating, mysterious world by discussing anything and everything that is audiobook related.

Audiofile is the only place I can count on to recieve accurate information about this growing and rapidly changing industry, that remains largely unsung elsewhere. It is a highlight when I recieve the latest copy, go through it and plan what I am going to listen to next.It has led me to many works I might never have considerd and helps me follow my favorite narrators, audio related events etc.Whether you are an everyday listener or an industry professional,AudioFile is a lifeline! Life would be a lot duller without this irreplaceable guide.

I can hardly wait for my next copy to come. I look forward to the magazine more than any other magazine I get and read every word in it. I save them for years and go back to them as they have relevance years back when new books come out. They give me pleasure with every read. Even though I can read them on the computer I just love having them around the house so I can pick one up and see what was around months ago or years ago. I'm a real fan. I can't say enough. I've given them as gifts to all of my friends that join audible. I buy books I might not have noticed without reading about it in audiofile. Thank you, thank you, thank you. What more can I say. Keep them coming.

For lovers of audiobooks, Audiofile Magazine performs a valuable service. While I read book reviews from many sources, Audiofile Magazine is the only reviewing service I've found that provides feedback on the quality of the listening experience. Highly recommended.

I admit it; I'm addicted ... not to the heavy stuff, but instead head-over-heels in love with audiobooks. And they have found a friend in AudioFile, a truly wonderful magazine that informs addicts like me about the latest trends, equipment, books to hit the market. The down is that it's only published every other month. I voraciously read it both on line and the "hardcover" edition that arrives in my mailbox. Some other reviewer complains that the reviews are nothing more than recaps. While they are short and to the point, I disagree about the contents of the reviews. They're exactly what I'm looking for: an overview of the book, not an in-detail New York TImes type review. If I want to learn more I then check with Amazon to see what others feel. While I still purchase and read print books (they'll never go out of style!), I have found audiobooks a great alternative to curling up with Agatha Christie. And, hopefully, AudioFile, along with my newfound addiction to audiobooks, will continue to prosper and grow. It's good to be in on the ground floor!

For lovers of audio books, this is a must have magazine. The reviews are thorough and interesting. I have seldom found I review that has not been helpful. f I enjoy the articles and even the ads. The magazine has a service whereby they send you, via email, upcoming reviews. I am a knitter, handspinner and weaver and audio books are my constant companion. It is important to me to have a source of reviews. There is nothing like renting or buying and audio book and not liking it. I highly recommend this magazine.
