Atomic Ranch

I was very excited to subscribe to this magazine through the convenience of Amazon. Because I wouldn't get my first issue till the fall, I went to Borders and got the summer issue. To my absolute SHOCK, the subscription card from the magazine said "one year only $19.99" (over a $14 difference than Amazon). You can not cancel a subscription with Amazon, and they have not responded to my complaints of the pricing difference. It's a great magazine, but go to your local book store. It's going to be a while before I order anything from Amazon again!

Ever since I saw "Atomic Ranch" in a bookstore, I knew I would be a long-term subscriber. The magazine is devoted to ranch homes built during the cold war (roughly the 1950s to 1970s) that were considered cool when they were built, and have been updated in unique and beautiful ways since then.

The first word that comes to mind when leafing through this magazine is "retro," and for good reason. The magazine explores the glory of a once-fading architectural form and brings it up to date with contemporary alterations, which in many cases go back to the roots of the house, undoing years of ill-advised "improvements" (especially notorious in the 1980s.) Fortunately the magazine is geographically diverse, exploring homes far from the coasts in places like Chicago, Charlotte, and Baton Rouge.

For once I am happy to read all the advertisements, normally the bane of a magazine. Here, though, the ads are for fun and cool products and are frequently as interesting as the articles.

I recommend "Atomic Ranch" with my highest possible endorsement: lovers of modern architecture and style trends will want to read every page of every issue like I do.

Having submitted my order in May 2005, and getting my first issue in late July, I was somewhat irked when I also noticed the subscription price difference.

That aside, it's really an interesting magazine.

Please don't think it's for everyone, however. Unlike other publications that look at the archecture elements or design elements, I believe this is for folks interested in preserving a shrine to the '50s and '60s life-style. It is innocuous enough to use that weird green and pink, together, to make some sort of statement I suppose -but I didn't like it when it was "trendy." The boomerang accent tables are a wonderful comparison for the difference between "mod" and "modern" and why alot of folks wouldn't want to get too far back into that "mod" thing.

Overall, pretty good. Just don't get stung on the subscription price.

I liked the magazine, being an owner in a neighborhood that 2 consecutive issues featured homes from was interesting, however, they did not fulfill our subscription, and when we brought this up to them via email they blamed us and the post office for not receiving it, they sent them out 2 months prior to us moving here, but they blamed us for not providing a new address, even though we had only been here 2 weeks when we contacted them. very rude and they never not once said, 'let us check our records", just a "we won't send another" end of chat. Very brassy for a start-up magazine. I am done with them

Sister 2 Sister

I swear if it were possible I would give this magazine zero stars. I read an issue of this magazine not too long ago and it was just awful. They claim to be a magazine for today's black woman but if today's woman is obsessed with hair, makeup, how to make it good for your man, perpetuating the video girl image and the other usual, boring crap one reads in most women's magazines, then I would rather not be a black woman! As I flipped through the issue, I felt like it was a veiled, and thinly veiled, attempt at trying to turn me into the stereotypical video girl. You know the type, the chick in the club wearing barely anything, brainless, and is basically there to be a trophy for her wannabe ain't neva gonnabe thuggin man!

Believe it or not, I only encountered two articles of substance. One that stands out is about women who don't want to have children. And even that article wasn't in depth enough. If you want a good magazine, try Pink, Oprah's or Essence. Yeah, Oprah's mentions fashion and occassionally mentions how to have better sex, but notice that a HUGE majority of the magazine has a lot of substance.

Unlike this pathetic excuse for a magazine, the others actually realize that you have a mind and you want to use it. They realize that not only do you desire to improve yourself but also the state of the world. Sister 2 Sister actually makes me embarassed to be black! When are we ever going to move beyond the video girl image? When will the black community ever stop perpetuating this ridiculous image and expecting all of us to be these fantasy women?

This is a good entertainment magazine for black women. Sister 2 Sister always features the best interviews. Jamie Foster Brown really knows how to connect with the celebs and gets them to spill things they otherwise wouldn't. You don't get those generic PC responses that a lot of other magazines get. This magazine just has more....uh, soul? I dont get that slick sold out feel that I do from other more majorly popular black female magazines. Most unintentionally hilarious random fact is that every issue they feature an advice column by Tami Roman. Yes Tami "hoodrat" Roman from Basketball Wives Miami fame actually gives advice to others LMAO. But overall I'd really advise you to become a subscriber if you aren't already. Sister 2 Sister may be less well known but it's the best magazine I've come across in a long time.

International Bulletin of Missionary Research

Christian faith has always been centrifugal, rarely containable, and viscerally cross-cultural. The mission of the Christian Church is therefore expansive, intentionally persuasive, and usually outward-looking.

The academic study of this mission is called missiology. Often regarded in terms of its European roots (think University of Edinburgh), American divinity schools and faculties of missiology have in the last three decades pumped out legions of graduates. The International Bulletin of Missionary Research, published by the high-regarded Overseas Ministries Study Center, has emerged as one of the dominant trade journals for this academic study.

Its pages are frequently filled by articles, essays, and dissertation synopses produced by non-Western scholars, who increasingly represent the dynamic as well as the demographic center of Christian mission. The monthly Bulletin is edited and produced to a high standard and as made itself an indispensable source for missionary research.

One of its most popular features is entitled 'My Pilgrimage in Mission', which chronicles changes in the enterprise via first-hand accounts of how living beyond one's familiar context changes a person from the inside out.

Goldmine (1-year)

Goldmine is a music magazine that caters to record collectors. The cover stories and articles deal with all types of music (rock, r & b, pop, country, jazz, reggae, punk, alternative, etc.) with the greatest emphasis on artists who were popular in the '60s and '70s. Recent cover stories include interviews with surviving members of the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, the Four Seasons, and the Dave Clark 5's lead singer Mike Smith. There are also annual issues devoted to Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

Each issue of Goldmine contains reviews on recent cd releases (new product and reissues/collections). There are also country and jazz sections that contain interviews with vintage artists (recent country interviews include Bobby Bare, Guy Clark, and Merle Haggard) and cd reviews. The country section also provides helpful info like upcoming tv appearance and cd release dates, while the jazz section offers esoteric essays from jazz historian Carlo Wolff. Dahl's Digs is one of my favorite columns, where celebrated author Bill Dahl (Motown: The Golden Years) "digs" up some rare musical treasures from the past that have been recently reissued (or should be).

Since Goldmine is a magazine for record collectors, there are a number of ads by vendors who carry rare/promo vinyl and cds, as well as a classified section where you can state what you're looking for (I have bought some rare radio promo collections this way). If you like a lot of genres of music, especially music recorded during the '50s through the '80s, then I think you will enjoy Goldmine.

Finally, A musical magazine that is not mired down in sophmoric humor for stoned college kids. One that actually focuses on the integrity of music for its reviews, delves into the deep history of artists and their albums with great research. It does weigh a bit heavy on music pre 1980 but that is to be expected due to the age of most of the writers. A great resource for those who are collectors of vinyl, and cds; although they could use more information of what is collectible and give more prices in each edition. While you won't get those glossy photos of jessica simpson barely clothed, you will enjoy insightful writing on the music and career of musicians both popular and obscure. I highly reccomend this for music lovers.

I've been collecting vinyls for 6 years now. I only recently discovered this magazine and subscribed imediately. There are a lot of great infor about artists of all kinds, record collecting and venues for finding them. The front page always has a frame worthy photo. It is a great added addition to a fun hobby.

Goldmine is an okay mag for vinyl collectors but unless your only cares are centered around Elvis and the Beatles then you may be disappointed. I understand those two acts bring more at auctions than anything else but who would watch sports if the only teams you ever heard about were the Yankees, Cowboys, and Lakers? I'm sure there are people out there who will have blood shoot from their eyes after reading my review but my stance is undisputed. Just count the covers.

I have subscribed to this magazine from the very beginning, and to this day there is no other magazine that caters to motorcycle tourers. The mag features a nice mix of US tours and international tours, although 95% are US tours. They really don't discriminate against any make or model as all types of motorcycles can be seen inside, which is really my favorite part. I have multiple motorcycles, basically at least 1 from each category. Another reason why I love this magazine are the pull out tank bag maps. Although I'm not great with computers, their website lets me access all of my issues in digital formats, and I can download all of the maps and GPS files.

I have been a subscriber to this rag for over 3 years now and enjoyed it on and off and some of the articles are well written and others are like they were written by a 5th grader (actually a 3rd grader because i had better writing skills in 5th grade) and then the real reason why i am stopping my sub is because i am totally sick and tired of looking at the Publisher and her son in all of the pictures throughout the rag. Now, having said that....... I like people who love themselves........ but this has really, really, gotten bad, really, really, bad. Heat - En

When I was living in London last year I randomly came upon heat and was INSTANTLY addicted. My flatmates and I would go back and forth between buying it week after week. I couldn't wait for Tuesday to role around so I could get the next issue. heat not only has great paparrazi photos, but it's hilarious. Whoever the writers are, they're genius. I love the sense of humor and teasing of celebrities. I especially love that they don't validate celebs for getting increasingly skinny and unhealthy, such as every American counterpart does.

Heat has got to be the best goss magazine ever! I've never really enjoyed People or any of those crap American magazines at the checkout of virtually every supermarket. Brit celebs are so much more interesting! After my very first issue, I was hooked. The pics, the gossip, the headlines, the stories.....I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting! And I wanted MORE! Heat, you just cannot put down. Once I get a new issue, I don't even know where to start. There are so many juicy headlines...which one do I read first? Then I have to wait an entire week until I can get my hands on the next one.....

Creating Keepsakes

While I have not yet subscribed to this magazine, I have been checking out back issues at my local library for quite some time, and can happily say it is far better than its immediate competitors. I am a digi-scrapper so I'm not quite so inspired by the product reviews: the value for me is in the page sketches. Most issues include a pull-out page containing 30 or more of them that were featured in the current magazine. I especially appreciate that most featured layouts include 4 to 6 or even more (12!) photos on a two page spread: very few of those impractical 1 and 2 image pages that normal scrappers cannot afford the time or money to make! The articles are also well written with occasional good tips on portrait photography, journaling, and more. I will probably be getting a subscription for myself as a Christmas present!

Creating Keepsakes is good resource for new as well as long time scrapbookers. They do a nice job of showcasing and reviewing all the new products, and inspire me with fresh ideas. I find myself tearing out favorite examples of layouts and articles that I want to keep. I started saving these in a three ring binder. I've filled two and I've started on my third. I really like how there is now advice in shooting better photos and information on digital scrapbooking.

And I can say that Creating Keepsakes is still the number one magazine for scrapbookers anywhere. This is the magazine I turn to for ideas, for inspiration, and some good old-fashioned recharge of the creativity engine. For keeping up with new trends, nothing beats CK.

The writers and editors always have something fresh to offer, whether it's photography tips, layout or journaling ideas, design principles or a new approach to the hobby. Many of their old issues are still on my shelf, because of their timeless articles. This is a great resource for both new and advanced scrapbookers.
