Baltimore Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

I first subscribed to Baltimore Magazine because I was attracted to the many different places around Baltimore they reviewed. Since then, I've been completely put off by the sheer amount of advertising that they put in the magazine. The last issue I just received had a 19-page advertisement for cosmetic surgery followed by a 39 page (not a typo...39 FULL CONSECUTIVE PAGES) advertisement for lawyers. It's gotten to the point where I can't even flip through the magazine anymore. I have to turn and scour each page to find the real content now. Needless to say, I won't be renewing my subscription anymore.

I picked up this magazine, as I'm sure many people will, because of the current issue (May 2010) with the big words "FREE 159 Things To Do This Summer" plastered all over the front. I thought, hey, great! What a great feature article, for everyone looking for a cheap way to get out and see their city. When I first picked it up, before I read any of the magazine, I was thinking it would be nice to subscribe.

No.

The subscription price is ridiculously low because of the millions of ads. You will not go one two pages without hitting an ad. The feature story was mediocre, and you can find their information on the magazine's website.

In short: Don't bother subscribing, any information that's worth getting is on their website.

Atomic Ranch

I was very excited to subscribe to this magazine through the convenience of Amazon. Because I wouldn't get my first issue till the fall, I went to Borders and got the summer issue. To my absolute SHOCK, the subscription card from the magazine said "one year only $19.99" (over a $14 difference than Amazon). You can not cancel a subscription with Amazon, and they have not responded to my complaints of the pricing difference. It's a great magazine, but go to your local book store. It's going to be a while before I order anything from Amazon again!

Ever since I saw "Atomic Ranch" in a bookstore, I knew I would be a long-term subscriber. The magazine is devoted to ranch homes built during the cold war (roughly the 1950s to 1970s) that were considered cool when they were built, and have been updated in unique and beautiful ways since then.

The first word that comes to mind when leafing through this magazine is "retro," and for good reason. The magazine explores the glory of a once-fading architectural form and brings it up to date with contemporary alterations, which in many cases go back to the roots of the house, undoing years of ill-advised "improvements" (especially notorious in the 1980s.) Fortunately the magazine is geographically diverse, exploring homes far from the coasts in places like Chicago, Charlotte, and Baton Rouge.

For once I am happy to read all the advertisements, normally the bane of a magazine. Here, though, the ads are for fun and cool products and are frequently as interesting as the articles.

I recommend "Atomic Ranch" with my highest possible endorsement: lovers of modern architecture and style trends will want to read every page of every issue like I do.

Having submitted my order in May 2005, and getting my first issue in late July, I was somewhat irked when I also noticed the subscription price difference.

That aside, it's really an interesting magazine.

Please don't think it's for everyone, however. Unlike other publications that look at the archecture elements or design elements, I believe this is for folks interested in preserving a shrine to the '50s and '60s life-style. It is innocuous enough to use that weird green and pink, together, to make some sort of statement I suppose -but I didn't like it when it was "trendy." The boomerang accent tables are a wonderful comparison for the difference between "mod" and "modern" and why alot of folks wouldn't want to get too far back into that "mod" thing.

Overall, pretty good. Just don't get stung on the subscription price.

I liked the magazine, being an owner in a neighborhood that 2 consecutive issues featured homes from was interesting, however, they did not fulfill our subscription, and when we brought this up to them via email they blamed us and the post office for not receiving it, they sent them out 2 months prior to us moving here, but they blamed us for not providing a new address, even though we had only been here 2 weeks when we contacted them. very rude and they never not once said, 'let us check our records", just a "we won't send another" end of chat. Very brassy for a start-up magazine. I am done with them

A good magazine for boaters interested in mostly trailerable boats. Solid reviews, lots of helpful tips/tricks and great vacation suggestions. Wouldn't mind just a little more content... but it is a boating magazine...

I used to get this magazine years ago and liked it. Now it's all ads. Gone to pot. Very disappointed as I was giving it as a gift.

Audioxpress

Unlike most other audio magazines, Audioxpress focuses more on do-it-yourself projects rather than comercial product reviews. This is great for enthusiasts or hobbyists who want to build their own components and test out ideas. The problem is that a lot of what they talk about is highly technical. I feel like I need an advanced degree in electrical engineering just to understand what they're talking about half the time. This magazine doesn't pander to the novice. Instead it is a hard-core audio geek publication. If you have a good understanding of electrical engineering but don't know where to begin in terms of audio projects, this is the perfect magazine.

I only gave it three stars because while I think they cover technical aspects such as measurements very well, in my opinion they do a lousy job of coming up with really good designs to test out. I recall reading a final test of a subwoofer they built and they were having trouble finding out why there was distortion at the bass port. The last sentence of the article said something like "Although, it could just be because we built a square shaped port with 90 degree angles in it." You think? Doh!

Music Connection

Had always heard about it, but the first time I read MC was when I started working for this music management firm couple years ago. The office subscribes. Compared to the other notable music magazines I've browsed, Music Connection cover stories always seem to showcase bands, artists and producers I'd actually be interested in reading about. I was fortunate enough to even have my own music reviewed in one of their issues! The folks who put this mag together seem to be real musicians and genuine music fans, making for a great publication!

Music Connection is a great magazine. Being a publicist, I've worked with them directly and can only say good things. When covering large name artists, they always make sure to ask questions that will be helpful for smaller, up and coming artists and all their articles are a good read.

This magazine is packed with good music business information. It has frequent interviews with heavy decision makers and could be used as a good source for understanding current and future trends within the industry. This is a must have for anyone who is or wishes to enter the music industry. That being said it isn't perfect. It doesn't provide information backed by credible research. If a business provides subpar service you'll never know it until after the fact. It also doesn't do well in terms of providing tips, tricks, and how-tos, but if you want to know about available resources or read the perspective of business leaders this is a good magazine to purchase.

I got this for a teen cousin of mine that was interested in music as a career. I later canceled it (and I'm still waiting on that to go through) because it was over her head. I think it would be very good for someone that can grasp the information better. For a teen, stick to the more basic mags.

Living With Christ - Large Print Us Edition

I subscribe to "Living with Christ" 2 years ago even if I owned a Vatican II Missal because of its portability. I've cherished it ever since. First of all it always has beautiful religious art on the cover and I have saved some of them. Inside you will find an editorial that gives you an idea of the theme of the month's readings are. That is followed by an article on the Gospels. The magazine always has an inspirational piece by a known saint or writer.

To enrich worship, Living with Christ offers a preparation for Sundays that families can meditate on each week. There are also household rituals that bring the celebrations of the liturgical year into our homes.

"Liturgical Link" section contains explanations of the Mass and the "Living our Faith" section is writing that builds on the theme and the elements of our faith. They are usually written by saints/contemplatives.

Also included are morning and evening prayers, articles by priests,religious and other people of faith, and two explorations of the Scriptures which is suitable for individuals or group use.

Finally, it has the Eucharistic Liturgy with all the prayers the priest recites during Mass so readers can follow along, the weekly intercessions, and the daily readings and Gospel for the entire month including feast days and holidays. Sprinkled throughout the issue are quotations from saints that relate to the day's readings.

This magazine is a must for people who want to keep up with the readings of the daily Mass either in church, at home, or at work. I bring my issue on vacation with me. The large print is very easy on the eyes. The plastic cover is an added bonus with built in book marker. Living with Christ also includes an Easter Triduum issue.

1. A gift subscripion given by me at Christmas time was $21.95.it started on January of this year I ordered it late in November 2007.

2. Even without the Christmas special the company publishing "Living with Christ" is offering a regular subscription at $24.95

This is a wonderful book if you like reading the daily readings. I am a lector and use this book often to prepare before mass. This enables me to see any hard to pronounce names or city names before mass so I can look up the pronunciation on the internet. Also great for people who are hard of hearing they can follow along using this book.

Alabama Gardener

I just moved to Alabama from Wisconsin 2 years ago....BIG difference. American Art Collector

I ordered a subscription to Art Collector because I'd seen the mag in galleries and wanted to use it as a gallery and artist reference guide. However, Art Colllecter magazine covers a very limited scope of catagories of art. I was looking for info on modern, contemporary and new artists and galleries although the mag is beautiful, the art that's covered is beautiful but it's info and news is limited to nautical, midwestern and realistic themes. I had hoped to see more progressive work included in the publication.

I have been collecting art for the past six or seven years and before this magazine was published I spent countless hours on the internet researching artists and galleries. I own over 150 oils, most of them painted by artists whose work appears in this magazine. Many collectors now depend on the internet to locate works of art they wish to purchase. I feel that the galleries and artists mentioned in this magazine are reputable and well-established.

A cardinal rule in the purchase of art ( for the most part! ) is to buy only what you love, not for investment purposes. If one buys with some knowledge of the artist it is possible with the help of this magazine to buy what you love AND artists whose work is going up in value. I am happy to report that many artists whose work I bought six or seven years ago are no longer affordable to me. Yes, that's a good thing. American Art Collector, unlike so many magazines which showcase art the average buyer cannot afford, informs the beginning and experienced collector by giving them invaluable information.

Considering all the garbage that passes for art it is a pleasure to look at and enjoy this magazine each month. The quality of the publication is first rate and like Western Art Collector the full color spreads are a pleasure. I agree with the reviewer that felt that it was impossible to throw out an issue. Turtle

I recently purchased this magazine for my 3 year old daughter and she loves it. Every night she exclaims, "Mommy please read my turtle!" The stories in it are just right for her. I think it is a great magazine for little ones.

I got the subscription addressed to my 3 and 1 yr old girls. The 3 yr old got a kick out of receiving mail in her name. I looked through the issue and was not immediately impressed but only because I was judging the magazine from an adult perspective and the girls seemed to lose interest as soon as the effect of receiving mail wore off and Dora, Diego and Yo gabba gabba called for their attention from the TV. It was not until a few days after receiving our first issue of Turtle that I soon realized its literary value and how it can and does compete with the extra sensory overload often found in children's programming. As soon as we settled in for the night I sat with Amelie, the 3 yr old. Angeline, the 1 yr old, was feverish and had succumbed to the effects of a sleep inducing dose of children's pain reliever/fever reducer. I decided to entertain Amelie while mom kept an eye on Angeline (actually mom ordered me to entertain Amelie). I, myself, was tired of tv and was catching up on my current issue of Mental Floss (another great mag I highly recommend) when it dawned on me that perhaps Amelie would entertain the idea of reading her magazine with dad. I made the suggestion, she agreed, but with a hint of skepticism, at least with as much skepticism as a 3 yr old can muster. As soon as we delved into that magazine Amelie was hooked and I, seeing the magazine in a different light, was completely amazed and very impressed. This is our first issue but I'm assuming that Turtle's format is consistent considering their demographic. The magazine has poems with simple rhyme schemes so Amelie quickly picked up on those. There is a Turtle story that continues throughout the magazine. I thought that was interesting because the story is presented in comic book form, it starts on one page and continues several pages later, in between there are pages with games, puzzles, poems, then the story continues followed by pictures of kids with their pets which they send in to be published; I understand pictures can be submitted online. This was way cool for us since the place where we live does not allow pets. We had fun looking at all the pictures of kids who do have pets. There was even a page that was almost blank except for a frame. I thought, "great! I just paid for a subscription that includes blank pages, a ream of paper would have been cheaper." As it turns out the semi-blank page is for creative drawings that you can submit along with a thumbnail picture of the "artist" and it might get published in the next issue of Turtle. Needless to say, Amelie and I had fun looking at the drawings submitted and the pictures of their corresponding artists. Guess who can't wait to make a drawing and have it submitted, Amelie. The clincher for me, as a parent, was that the tv was off the whole time we were into the magazine and when we were done Amelie asked me to read it again. We saved the drawing and coloring parts so that Angeline could share in that as soon as she feels better. I highly recommend this magazine for pre-school aged children and their parents. I know I'm looking forward to reading it again tonight. The price of the subscription is very reasonable but Amelie's reaction is priceless.

My 2.5 year old adores this magazine. First off, she loves to receive her own magazine in the mail, just like Mommy and Daddy, but the fun doesn't end there! There are new, age-appropriate stories in every issue, fun crafts to do on rainy days and pictures that she will look through again and again. We sent in a picture of her with her cat and it even appeared in an issue....boy did she love that! We have Turtle magazine stored by her bed and in the car. It is always a good time for Turtle and we love exploring it together!
