Icreate - England

Icreate - EnglandYou bet, this one is. There are only a few Mac oriented magazines out there and they all wish they could be this well written. This is a large format magazine and each issue is filled with a series of how-to articles that I consider the best written, best illustrated and easiest to follow. I can slog through some fairly dull reading but this is the magazine I would give to my wife / daughter / co-worker to explain how to use iChat, hook up an iSight camera, customize iCal, get started with Safari and so on.

They review many new software tittles and the latest hardware goodies. Since it is a magazine, the reviews are very current. Each issue comes with a CD and they are starting to include pdf copies of prior issues, great for reference.

I started reading iCreate with the very first issue and haven't stopped yet. I had recently purchased an iBook for my sister in an effort to bring her into the 21st century but for all of the ease the Mac offers, my sister still wasn't really doing anything but using email...and even then maybe once a week. I picked up a copy of iCreate for her when it first came out. I liked it because it was written in plain english and it seemed that every page was a tutorial. Well it is 11 issues later and I am still hooked on this magazine. My sister has her own web page and is a master if the iLife program..all thanks to iCreate magazine. I read it too,,,love the disc and the articles. I find that it is better than Mac Addict (which hurts to say) and some of the other Mac mags. This magazine is geared towards the beginner to intermediate user but I'll tell you...even experianced users will enjoy it.

Buy Icreate - England Now

I picked up a copy at a local book store strictly for the article on networking and found a lot more useful items included. If you're into Macs for using the iLife and similar software, there are a ton of good "tutorials" included in each issue. Newstand price was $15.50, so it's more on the order of buying a paperback book instead of a magazine. Content is excellent--I found things in the tutorials that even the local Apple store didn't give in their classes.

Great magazine couldn't recommend it any higher for anyone starting out with macs. iCreate also introduced a great Pro section in 2005 to delveinto the workings of ProApps such as Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, mDVD Studio Pro etc. Now here's the thing, I'm wondering how the magazine can be available for subscription while the magazine was put on hold late last year. Me, or anyone I know with a subscription haven't recieved the mag for months, and there has been no contact from the people who handle the subscription despite zillions of e-mails. So be careful, get the full story before you hand over any money!!!!!!!!!!! check the web for similar storries, you will find them

I subscribed at their website; used promotional code "USA3"

The price dropped from '80 Pounds to '50 Pounds ... thats less than $USD 80 for 13 issues (Amazon's price is over $USD 139).

Downside: (1) the credit card will add a fee for foreign currency; (2) You don't get Amazon's satisfaction protection.

8/27/2011 I just renewed my subscription. The code "USA3" still works; 13 issues delivered to USA for 50 Pounds. Great magazine, highly recommended.

8/6/2012 Time to renew? Promotional Code "USA3" no longer works. "USA4" is a new code, does work, but the price is £65 for 13 issues. That's over $101 USD and exceeds my budget by a lot. Digital edition may be less expensive, but since I don't have an iPad, that's irrelevant to me. (Come to think of it, much of the mag's content is now iPad-centric.) Guess I'll let the subscription expire.

Under The Radar

Under The RadarIt may be called "Under the Radar," but this indie-rock music mag is way above average. Stuffed with insightful articles, relevant news and outstanding bands, Under the Radar is a must-have for fans of good indie-pop, rock and blow-your-mind alternative. Don't look for greasy gossip or trends -just music, music and music.

It starts off with some smaller interviews and Q&As, which still manage to be insightful as they interview people like Stephen Malkmus and Interpol. Then it's on to the major articles -in-depth studies of the bands and the individual people. But Under the Radar also delves into the background of the music, how the bands feel about their fans, the inspiration, the side projects, and much more.

Under the Radar also keeps an eye on the future: They cover future music releases by bands like Hot Hot Heat, the Doves, and Sparklehorse, as well as giving tabs on what other bands (Broken Social Scene) are doing in the limbo between albums. And of course -new bands! They offer some good looks into promising newcomers who are just starting out in the musical world.

The music-journalism world has undergone a bit of a revolution -commercialized, aging mags like Spin and Rolling Stone are being supplanted by smaller but more relevant magazines like Filter and the online Kludge. Under the Radar is one such magazine -except for frequency, there is nothing to complain about in this wonderfully in-depth, well-written exploration of good music -Modest Mouse, Dntel, Beta Band, Clinic, the Decemberists, Sun Kil Moon and much more.

Let's get this out of the way quickly -compared to most music magazines, Under the Radar comes out infrequently. As a result, if you pick it up in a bookstore, you may find that the "future releases" have already come out. However, the insightful content and all the music it can introduce you to are worth the wait.

The interviews are the best part of it all. The writing is calm, without the hyperactive, jokey wannabe-coolness that most magazines are infected with. The interviewers and columnists for Under the Radar are respectful and laid-back -no "about your girlfriend" questions, thankfully. In these interviews, the musicians seem relaxed and at ease, like they know they're in good hands. But they can also be solemn -in the sixth issue, Marcus Kagler gives a poignant tribute to the late Elliott Smith, remembering what Smith was like.

While still a relative newcomer, Under the Radar shows that it it should be up there with Mojo and Filter as a must-have for music geeks. Toss out your copies of Rolling Stone and pick up Under the Radar instead.

Under the Radar might be the best American music magazine around these days. The writing and photography is great, and the layout and overall quality of the mag just gets better with each issue. If you're into indie-rock then you're bound to love at least some of the bands they've covered, they seem to interview almost everybody. They squeeze so many amazing bands into each issue. My only complaint is that is doesn't come out more regularly.

I've sampled a lot of indie-rock mags, and Under the Radar is definitely more ahead of the curve than indie magazines like Amplifier, Rockpile, Big Takeover, Resonance etc. (all worthy music mags) or than bigger mags like Rolling Stone, Spin, Filter, Blender etc. Most of my new favorite bands in the last year or two were discovered through Under the Radar, then a couple of months later I'd start reading about some of those bands in other music mags. Via Under the Radar I first discovered bands like The Thrills, The Sleepy Jackson, Mew, The Streets, Rilo Kiley, Clearlake, British Sea Power, Interpol, The Polyphonic Spree, The Dears, The Velvet Teen, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV On the Radio, Electrelane, Hot Hot Heat, Elbow, stellastarr*, The Shins, and the list goes on. Plus their articles on bigger bands are usually more in-depth than other US music mags. They've done great articles on Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Spiritualized, Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie, Belle & Sebastian, The Flaming Lips, Blur, Super Furry Animals, Bright Eyes, Ride, Badly Drawn Boy, Broken Social Scene, etc. etc. And they were the last magazine to interview Elliott Smith before he died because they were the only ones who bothered to track him down and catch up with him. The photography is usually great too. For ahwile I wasn't into the layout, but they've really improved on that with the last couple of issues. There are other music mags that I buy too, like Devil In the Woods, Magnet and Big Takeover, but Under the Radar is the one I trust the most.

Here's a tip. Subscribe to this rag directly through Under the Radar's website and you'll get to choose from a selection of free CDs. These aren't compilations, but actual albums from new indie artists. In many cases, the CD costs more than the subscription, which is still a meager $12.50. There's no sense in purchasing this magazine through Amazon and losing out on the bargain.

Current CD selections include:

Bright Eyes/Neva Dinova: One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels

Caribou: Swim

Casio Kids: Topp Stemning På Lokal Bar

Dr. Dog: Shame, Shame

Gayngs: Relayted

Here We Go Magic: Pigeons

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings: I Learned the Hard Way

Jamie Lidell: Compass

Steve Mason: Boys Outside

Plants and Animals: La La Land

Now i dont usually write reviews for things, but when i do its because i really like it or i really hate it. And i must say this is one of the best, if not the best music magazine out there. But before you go on if you like bands like simple plan or new found glory just stop and go read something else. this magazine is for indie rock fans or just plain rock. They give you reviews on at least 30 albums and have great interviews with artists. Now this is not like "Spin" who jumps on anything that is popular at the moment to make some money. I enjoyed reading this summers issue ( with Death Cab for Cutie on the front) so much that I ordered it the day i got the magazine. A must have for indie fans.

as a new subscriber i have only gotten one issue of under the radar. however the one issue i have recieved is fantastic. it has pages of great reviews and a very in-depth story on the cover artist. there is virtually no filler and there's page after page of stories on up and coming talent and lesser known musicians. this also isn't a magazine that you breeze through in 20 minutes and never look at again. my only complaint about this magazine is it's quarterly publication, i wish i could have one every month.

under the radar is worth the money to subscribe

Daedalus - Journal of the American Academy of Arts & Science

Daedalus - Journal of the American Academy of Arts & ScienceI'm surprised there are no other reviews of this important journal. As the main journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, it can be said that no other periodical quite fills its niche. Bringing together articles on a vast array of topics by the best minds in their fields it has been a journal that has not only been a forum for discussing current trends and issues in the arts and sciences but also forecasting and predicting them too. I refer to one of my favorite issues, which was devoted to The Report of the Committee on the Year 2000, which came out in the late 60s, and brought together a panel of distinguished scholars and scientists who attempted to extrapolate current trends forty years into the future. It was a great issue and may have been the genesis of Daniel Bell's The Coming of Post Industrial Society (Bell was chosen as the sociologist of the group), published many years later in 1976. Bell correctly predicted the information age, the service economy, a de-emphasizing of industrialism, the expansion of knowledge workers (especially in biology and the hard sciences), the increasing role of women in the work force, and other trends in this seminal work. But it may have all started in an issue of Daedalus. Overall, a journal that showcases the best and brightest minds of our civilization, often particularly with regard to those developments in the arts and sciences that are currently of interest to both the layman and the academic alike.

Kmt

KmtI've been a subscriber since the magazine debuted and have always looked forward to it's arrival. Articles are submitted by some of the top names in Egyptology and are both factually strong and immensely readable. The photos are stunning and not just the standard ones that you have seen over and over again. Each issue has book reviews and news of current discoveries in addition to the in-depth articles. I can't imagine that you would be dissatisfied with KMT if you are an experienced or novice Egyptophile.

KMT is the premier magazine for every Egypt "Kemit" enthusiast. Great articles and beautifully photographed images of the most recent developments in Egyptology. In addition to articles the magazine features special events, museum tours around the world and tours in Egypt. Worth every cent.

I first started buying this magazine back in the 90's. It is well laid out, profusely illustrated with well shot photographs. Some are current, some are historical. The articles deal not only with recent discoveries but also with the history of archaeological discoveries. I started buying it again in 2010 when the information about the DNA studies done on the 18th dynasty royals was published. Great article. This is my third renewal. These magazines are expensive but worth it as far as I am concerned.

Polish American Journal

Polish American JournalThe Polish American Journal is published monthly in newspaper format out of Boston, New York near Buffalo. The journal presents news and information regarding Poland and American Polonia from a very conservative, traditionalistic point of view. This is a folksy paper geared towards the Polish American blue hairs who still attend functions down at the struggling Dom Polski so you won't ever find any articles critical of Poland. While one would not expect a Polish American paper to present Poland and Polonia in a negative light, many of the most chauvinistic, parochial attitudes associated with Polish Catholic ethno-nationalism, including a certain degree of anti-Jewish bias, can be found in the pages of the PAJ. The paper advertises that it provides features by "Polonia's finest academicians and historians" however subscribers will instead find the paper's actual writers rarely measure up to those credentials. They can, however, usually be counted on to present news and opinion from very conservative and far-right points of view. For example, articles regularly appear in the PAJ in support of hyper-catholic, ultra-nationalistic Radio Maryja, which is so extreme it even rankles the conservative Polish Catholic Church and the Vatican. Letters to the editor asking that the paper present the news in a more moderate, objective voice are ignored.

Of course, the Polish American Journal does have its good points. Readers are able to keep current with what's going on down at the Polish embassy and what new polka CD's and books are out. There's also plenty of apolitical features on traditions and holidays. So while I do recommend the PAJ, I caution potential subscribers that they will be getting only a very conservative slant on Polish current events and history.

Koream Journal

Koream JournalCovers interests for Korean-Americans, but mostly focuses on the Gen 1.5 and 2 crowd, particularly those in their 20s and 30s. So lots of ads for wedding stuff, Crown Royal, cars, dance clubs, apartments, and the like. They do try to have a broader age / interest appeal with historical pieces and community articles, but the preponderance is for the younger, hipper crowd. Geographically the articles and advertisements center on Los Angeles.

Also the editorial tone of the magazine leans unquestionably to the left. One gets the feeling the staff was exposed directly or indirectly to the fashionably politically correct perspective in college or maybe just through MTV. Not a big leap these days.

But that doesn't detract too much from the magazine as a whole. And sure, there are editorial mishaps, such as poor grammar or organization, especially in those retrospective features.

But overall this magazine fills an important niche that truly no other magazine does. It's good to see people stepping up to enhance communication and awareness among KAs in a fashionable, up to date format.

For a magazine targeted to a small group of people it's well written and high quality.

Articles are both current and interesting.

My only complaint is the last part of the magazine is wasted space with comminity news and doesn't seem to fit the "hip" vibe of the rest of the magazine.

Horse Backstreet Choppers

Horse Backstreet ChoppersThe Horse features real world builds done by talented folks who are often not professional builders. You won't find the 1% wannabe if-it-ain't-a-Harley-it-ain't-wortha-S**t focus seen in most other chopper publications. It also doesn't cover those unridable billion dollar 'all-show and no-go' glitter monsters.

What you will find is an esoteric mix of reader-submitted builds utilizing Hondas, HDs, Yamahas, Triumphs, etc. You can even see WW-II era Urals brought back to life as Russian bobbers.

Yeah, it's a little spendy when compared to other bike mags because they aren't raking in the big advertising bucks from the bolt-on, after-market chrome crowd. If you are a grease covered, torch and sawzall creative type who loves motorcycles, forget all those other rags, THIS is the publication for you.

This rag does a great job covering all bikes. They are all about chopping bikes(hence the name) I wish i had been turned on to them long ago. They cover foreign and domestic bikes. What they also believe strongly in is a billet barge is dumb. I also agree. This is for people who work for a living and work on their bikes. You don't have to be Indian Larry's little cousin to know what they are talking about. And there is always an article about how to hack something.

One thing that seems to be not too great about it is the guys writing editorials. One guy hates the world and gets paid to dribble the same story every month. And then there's the guy who goes on a trip through Europe it seems like every year. But doesn't say anything other than "I am getting paid to do this by you, thanks for subscribing". Which gets annoying. All in all I love the mag though. And both of those guys seem great, I would love to hang out with them, they just don't have any competition so they don't go too far out there in the realm of quality writing.

All in all dont use that as an excuse to not buy it. I just don't want to write a review saying the rag is perfect, it isn't. But it is the best out there by a mile.

This is it. Choppers that resemble the working man's desire to create cool one off pieces of moto art that actually will make it cross country if needed. No floofy, over done, chrome plated packages of P.O.S.'s that you see every bike night at Applebee's with a content owner proudly wearing his brand new HD jacket and full leather's on a 80 degree evening. Nope. Not here. What you get is inspiration at it's truest form for dyed in the wool, custom motorcycle fiends. This magazine amazes me every issue and can give anyone hope of making thier own scoot a reflection of themselves and the lives they lead through countless hours of fabrication and dedication. Long live GTP and the staff at The Horse!!!

Want Horse Backstreet Choppers Discount?

This is a good mag if you want to see pics of home-built rides.

Pro: Not all HDs...Good mix of import bikes too. Nobody trying to make their bikes look like a F'n dragon or spiderman or some other crap.

Con: Zero tech info on the bikes or useful how-to articles. Just a bunch of stories about dudes "livin to ride" and gayin' it up calling each other "bro" and givin out man hugs, high fivin' and bumpin' knuckles.

Did I mention the pics are good?

Four Wheeler (1-year auto-renewal)

Four WheelerSubscribed for almost 10 years now. Great mag. Good read. Covers a wide array of off roading from extreme rocks, to super fast dunes, to stock SUV's going over tame trails, it has something for everyone.

This magazine contains a lot of useful information for people who will spend a lot of time modifying their vehicle. I have only recieved two issues so far and I have enjoyed reading the articles. I really like to go off-road but I like to do it so I can get somewhere amazing rather than to see what my vehicle can crawl over. I think this magazines serves the latter. But then I don't think any four-wheel drive magazine really caters to my interests perfectly.

The magazine covers a lot of different types of four wheel drive vehicles. It has relevant ads (we all like to drool over the newest gadgets, right?)

Cesars Way

Cesars WaySo I know a lot of magazines are littered with "fashion features" or "product features," which are just ads and product placements, sugar-coated to be easier to digest. I guess it's not surprising Cesar Milan's magazine is no different. But I was a bit naive and expected more articles regarding training, tips, and information. You really have to navigate through this magazine to get to the "good stuff" Cesar Milan has to offer. There's a wonderful "Ask Cesar" section in which readers' questions are answered. However, this section only spans five or six pages and the answers from Cesar are not very detailed.

There are some good articles on helpless dogs being adopted and people who devote their lives to helping canines, but all of the content is still overshadowed by the amount of ads. It's really a shame, and I wish some of the products advertised were better than overpriced or inane things you don't really need. However, these ads have opened my eyes to the lengths some people go to pamper their pups, and that's a lot coming from me--I spoil my puppy rotten. Overall, this magazine has some good info if you're a Cesar fan, plus good photography throughout.

The kindle edition you also get is a nice touch. I can go through the new issue before it hits newsstands/my mail.

I do like this magazine, especially seeing how personal Cesar Milan gets in some of the articles it's easier to relate to. There are a lot of ads in this magazine, which is a little annoying, a little interesting, because they are for a lot of unique dog items. Interested to get the next issue.

Shopnotes

ShopnotesI've been subscribing to this magazine for years. Although I don't have time to make all of the great things that they show, I can pick and choose the projects that I like and they are always well written and easy to understand.

I subscribed, again, to ShopNotes to make sure I can achieve some skill working on the different wood related projects I take on. Good information here for those so inclined. Each issue is bound later in a notebook style reference on my shelves to refer to as needed.

Other woodworking magazines have profuse prose with background and explanations of design and construction of furniture, and that's great. But for top value per page you can't beat Shopnotes. It consistently delivers excellent articles and projects that are clear and concise. it is very focused on "how to do it", with generous diagrams that clearly and comprehensively illustrate all aspects of the project. Whether a shop jig or a piece of furniture, their presentation is great. Oh, and the magazine itself is well suited to the shop environment since it is printed on heavy stock paper that makes for a durable, repeated reference.

Digital Photo Pro

Digital Photo ProDigital Photo Pro: This is a high-quality magazine, filled with comprehensive and informative articles, with great attention to aesthetics, as the photographs and products displayed are done with such class & detail. I have been collecting these magazines, on a monthly basis, which I keep in yearly binders, for reference. At one time, I had at least 6-8 different photo magazines coming to my home but then eliminated all but two and the Digital Photo Pro is one of them. For informative & inciteful articles and crisp, descriptive photos, I believe this is the best magazine available .

A fairly thin magazine (approx 105 pages per issue) that is packed with information. Too many ads for my taste but even the ads are informative (so not a complete waste of space). Bi-monthly. Recommended for advances photographers.

When I initially ordered the magazine I was told it would take 4 months to get the first issue. Why would anyone subscribe through Amazon only to have to wait 7 months to get the first issue.

Library Journal

Library JournalI am not a librarian but I did take a graduate level course in library science and was introduced to this periodical. Library Journal is quite comprehensive in its coverage it features articles pertaining to the discipline, features on libraries and some of the innovations in spotlighted libraries, the use of technology in libraries (a recent issue spotlighted a small library in MA where patrons could check out Nooks, Kindles, and iPads!), and many more.

One of my favorite sections in the journal is the sheer number of book reviews which gives an avid reader like me lots of suggestions as to books to be placed on my To Be Read (TBR) list. Many of the reviews feature books which are in pre-publication and there is also quite a comprehensive coverage of audio books, DVDs, software, and many more. I also like the suggested reads by practicing and retired librarians. Bibliophiles and librarians will find lots to enjoy in this quality journal.
