Moyen Age - Heimdal

Moyen Age - HeimdalQuite disappointing and poor pictures... always the same man writing every article...I havee been reading it for a while and had the feeling of loosing my money.

History is universal, but the English language isn't.

The fact that this magazine is written in French should not be a deterrent, it should be an incentive to learn another language, especially for those who have a thirst for knowledge and delight in things medieval. Many sources regarding European history are not written in English. Frustrating at times, I agree. However, I believe the effort of translation is it's own reward, but that's me. *wink*

Even if you cannot read French, Moyen Age has high visual value. This magazine is lavishly illustrated and contains beautiful color photos. It cites historical sources, and sometimes exposes readers to images and concepts that they have never seen before due to their obscurity.

I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Middle Ages.

Buy Moyen Age - Heimdal Now

It's in French. I know.. it's kinda obvious with a name like "Moyen Age"... but it didn't occur to me when I ordered it. I thought it was just being cutsey with the title.

Anyway. If you're willing to puzzle through the French, there are some fantastic articles about the middle ages with gorgeous, glossy complementary images.

Canadian Living

Canadian LivingI've subscribed to Canadian Living for almost 20 years after reading a copy while visiting Canada. The magazine offers plenty of parenting tips (great for young families) and lots of delicious recipes.

Each time I travel over the US border I always pick up a copy of CL. To my way of thinking CL picks up more common sense and interesting articles than Good Housekeeping or Womans Day here in the States. Often, the writing has that dry Canadian humorous edge to it that you don't always get in US publications.

Buy Canadian Living Now

I don't generally subscribe to magazines anymore, but I decided to give this one a try; it's a little bit on the expensive side, but by far it's one of the highest quality magazines I've seen in a long time. It doesn't seem to be very heavy with advertisements, either. One of the things that I enjoy the most about this magazine is there is such an abundance of cooking recipes, and many of them are very innovative, and healthy, definitely recipes that I will use. I now keep my magazines saved in with my cookbooks. I plan to give gift subscriptions to all of my sisters and mom. It's such a nice, enjoyable magazine. I would highly recommend trying it.

Whenever I travel to Toronto, I always look forward to getting this magazine. It's closest equivalent in the US would be Good Housekeeping. I enjoy the recipes as well. After I finish with it I pass it on to others and they always enjoy it as well.

France (1-year auto-renewal)

FranceIf you love France and all things French, then this is the magazine for you. I read it cover to cover whenever it comes out. Articles might be about such well known places as Carcassonne or Avignon. Others are about small-town festivals that you probably have never heard of. If you want to practice your French, then read "Mot à mot" both in French and English. This is a magazine that you will want to keep.

As a certified Francofreak I can assure you this is a great little mag. This magazine goes WAY beyond the Paris and Provence cliches of a France travel magazines or books.I've read it cover to cover and still can't get enough so I am going to subscribe to the sister mag "Living in France" right now.

Pluses:

-extremely fast subscription start-up time

-covers history, food, culture, real estate, travel etc. etc..

-thourough, in depth, lots of color photos

Needs to work on:

-color plates are a little washed out

-needs more detailed maps

...that's it

I subscribed to this magazine because I am teaching myself French, and intend to visit France someday. This magazine really makes you want to get there. The photos are beautiful, and the articles are well-written and very informative.I particularly loved the page-by-page journey through very small hamlets and villages.

I am learning a lot of different things about France.I intended to only visit Paris, but the descriptions and pictures of other areas of France have convinced me to make it an extended trip when I do go.Those little villages have so much history to show us.

I can't recommend this magazine enough. For any Francophiles out there, this is the magazine for you!!

I have subscribed to this magazine two different times in the past few years. I miss it every time my subscription ends. I am now going to subscribe to it a third time since I miss it so much!

As a French teacher who organizes student and adult trips to discover this beautiful country, I find this magazine to be a fantastic tool. It highlights different areas in detail and provides lots of variety and incredible photography. I am very familiar with some of the locations they write about, and their information is correct. Their cultural pieces are authentic and up-to-date. The only part that is annoying is that it is expensive.

My husband and I have saved every single issue we have received and regularly refer back to them to look over new areas we are planning to introduce to new groups of students and adults. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Makes a unique gift to any Francophile and could maybe convert Francophobes to the better side...

I first ordered this magazine as a Christmas gift in 2005 for a friend. She loves it, and I'll definitely renew it for her when the time comes. This Christmas (2006) I just bought another subscription to this magazine for relatives who are very familar with France and enjoy its language and culture. I'm sure they'll be pleased.

Horse Backstreet Choppers

Horse Backstreet ChoppersThe Horse features real world builds done by talented folks who are often not professional builders. You won't find the 1% wannabe if-it-ain't-a-Harley-it-ain't-wortha-S**t focus seen in most other chopper publications. It also doesn't cover those unridable billion dollar 'all-show and no-go' glitter monsters.

What you will find is an esoteric mix of reader-submitted builds utilizing Hondas, HDs, Yamahas, Triumphs, etc. You can even see WW-II era Urals brought back to life as Russian bobbers.

Yeah, it's a little spendy when compared to other bike mags because they aren't raking in the big advertising bucks from the bolt-on, after-market chrome crowd. If you are a grease covered, torch and sawzall creative type who loves motorcycles, forget all those other rags, THIS is the publication for you.

This rag does a great job covering all bikes. They are all about chopping bikes(hence the name) I wish i had been turned on to them long ago. They cover foreign and domestic bikes. What they also believe strongly in is a billet barge is dumb. I also agree. This is for people who work for a living and work on their bikes. You don't have to be Indian Larry's little cousin to know what they are talking about. And there is always an article about how to hack something.

One thing that seems to be not too great about it is the guys writing editorials. One guy hates the world and gets paid to dribble the same story every month. And then there's the guy who goes on a trip through Europe it seems like every year. But doesn't say anything other than "I am getting paid to do this by you, thanks for subscribing". Which gets annoying. All in all I love the mag though. And both of those guys seem great, I would love to hang out with them, they just don't have any competition so they don't go too far out there in the realm of quality writing.

All in all dont use that as an excuse to not buy it. I just don't want to write a review saying the rag is perfect, it isn't. But it is the best out there by a mile.

This is it. Choppers that resemble the working man's desire to create cool one off pieces of moto art that actually will make it cross country if needed. No floofy, over done, chrome plated packages of P.O.S.'s that you see every bike night at Applebee's with a content owner proudly wearing his brand new HD jacket and full leather's on a 80 degree evening. Nope. Not here. What you get is inspiration at it's truest form for dyed in the wool, custom motorcycle fiends. This magazine amazes me every issue and can give anyone hope of making thier own scoot a reflection of themselves and the lives they lead through countless hours of fabrication and dedication. Long live GTP and the staff at The Horse!!!

This is a good mag if you want to see pics of home-built rides.

Pro: Not all HDs...Good mix of import bikes too. Nobody trying to make their bikes look like a F'n dragon or spiderman or some other crap.

Con: Zero tech info on the bikes or useful how-to articles. Just a bunch of stories about dudes "livin to ride" and gayin' it up calling each other "bro" and givin out man hugs, high fivin' and bumpin' knuckles.

Did I mention the pics are good?

Hopscotch : the Magazine for Girls

Hopscotch : the Magazine for GirlsA friend gave us her back issues of this magazine. It is full of fun, ideas, and experiments. I like the idea of no advertisements. I like that there's no agenda of trying to make little girls grow up too fast (no make-up, hair styles, fashion, etc.). Not sure if they still do this, but there's a section where you can get a pen pal through the magazine. Several letters were from home schooled kids. I wouldn't down-grade product that tells you in the description that it takes 12-16 weeks to arrive. It does sound like a long time, but it was disclosed upon ordering.

I ordered this magazine along with Fun for Kidz two years ago. My girls love them and even use them for school. There are no inappropriate articles and no advertisements. I have had no problem and have renewed and ordered for friends. I would recommend these magazines.

Linux Format - Incls Linux Format - DVD

Linux Format - Incls Linux Format - DVDThere are several Linux magazines out there, but this one, Linux Format is probably #1, Linux Pro Magazine is probably #2. However, they are priced ridiculously high...about $150 to $200 per year!!! NOT BEGINNER FRIENDLY!!

It is more than about time the Linux FORMAT started offering subscriptions without the DVDs or even better an online .PDF version to lower the costs. Until then, I will stick with the MANY online resources and FREE online magazines out there.

Linux is about freedom and being advanced...being cutting edge and thinking outside the box, yet Linux Format continues to "stay the course" and only offer a subscription with DVD. The magazines pile up, the DVDs never see the light of day (how many distros can you possibly test drive in a year for God's sake???) and your money gets wasted.

As far as I am concerned and as much as I love the writing behind Linux Format, I think the executive people behind it are ripping us all off.

I've been reading Linux Format for a few years now. This magazine is typical of the excellent quality of many magazines published in England about the whole range of subjects. Having said that it's the best on the market, I should qualify that a little, by pointing out that I'm not a Linux developer/guru so I'm coming at it from the viewpoint of the relatively casual intermediate level user. There may be Linux magazines that are better if you're a Linux system administrator, or if you are developing software for Linux.

I enjoy the variety of articles covering various aspects of Linux and the "How-TO" articles as well as reviews of products and software for Linux.

I sure wish it was a bit less pricey, though.

Buy Linux Format - Incls Linux Format - DVD Now

This is, in my view, the best "using Linux" magazine on the market. There's a lot of information in each issue, it's an entertaining read, and the coverage is broad enough that you're likely to learn a fair amount if you read it cover to cover.

The quality is sometimes uneven, though. The "Roundup" feature, in particular, has of late used such narrow review criteria that it feels like looking through a keyhole. The all white male editorial staff that they seem to have settled on can be annoying as well. As others have pointed out, though, the biggest negative to this magazine is the fact that it's only available in paper form with an accompanying DVD and, outside of the UK, an astonishing subscription price. I'd love to keep getting it, but have a hard time justifying to myself a subscription price that's now north of $15 US per issue. When we start talking that kind of money I'd think that I'd rather donate it to open source projects.

Read Best Reviews of Linux Format - Incls Linux Format - DVD Here

I've purchased several Linux magazines over the years and find myself coming back to Linux Format time and again, from the bookstore even, regardless of the the price. But what people I don't think realize is that the magazine is not published in the US. Its published in Britain and is sold primarily there. So when its sold in the states it is, unfortunately, subject to the current exchange rate.

I agree with others, Best Linux Magazine out there, you will get a lot for you money. But it is a lot of your $$.

Dig

DigMy son received a gift subscription to this magazine two years ago, and each year since, he's asked for a renewal subscription. If he didn't get it himself, I would be sorely tempted to subscribe to it for myself. The articles are accessible to kids, but not so dumbed down to be condescending. Some of the articles I've copied out and given to whom-ever I can (and I mean adults) because they're so darn interesting and I-didn't-know-that! Highly recommended for the young enquiring mind and the parent of the same!

Dig takes a subject that could be dull and transforms it into something fun, exciting, and easy to relate to. Well-researched and -written articles by people who are actually *doing* archeology expose kids to fascinating subjects month after month. Activities, photos, and maps keep each issue visually interesting. Megaliths, Bog People, and Disasters are just a few of the themes Dig explores. This is a great magazine for curious, bright, and clever kids who want to know more about Dig-ging stuff up!

Buy Dig Now

I wish this magazine had been around when I was a kid. One might think an archaeology magazine would be a little boring... but that's not the case at all! One of my favorite issues of the magazine is called "Disaster!" (February 2007). It explores how archaeologists worked at Ground Zero after Sept. 11 and in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina--pretty fascinating stuff.

There are lots of high-quality photos, and sidebars and boxes add even more information than the well-written articles already provide. This magazine is worth getting for any child who has any curiosity about the world around him or her.

Read Best Reviews of Dig Here

My elementary age kids are just beginning to understand the larger scope of the world and human history. While in the process of looking for good magazines about current events I came across Dig. I signed up for a subscription in hopes that it would help my kids get that better understanding of the world. We've been quite pleased with it.

In that process of looking for good kids magazines we tried out a bunch of them, and got subscriptions to most. Here's my quick quick rundown

Kids Discover: heavy on pictures, light on words. The articles tend to be little snippets and factoids without context or much explanation.

National Geographic Kids: heavy on the pictures, light on the words. Articles are a bit more in depth than Kids Discover.

Time for Kids: Thin and a bit flimsy, but comes frequently (every two weeks?) and covers major current events pretty well. Different versions are available for different ages. Order it from the Time for Kids web site since Amazon doesn't seem to carry it.

Ask and Muse: In depth interesting articles addressing all sorts of thoughtful topics. Probably best for middle school and/or more thoughtful kids.

Dig: In depth interesting articles addressing history under the guise of archeology. Probably best for late elementary and middle school, and/or more thoughtful kids.

I ordered DIG for my 11 y/o son last year through his magazine drive at school. He LOVES it and so do I! He wants to be a paleontologist and this magazine is perfect for his dinosaur/history passion. Very interesting and informative magazine. I highly recommend it to those who have children interested in science.

Texas Monthly (1-year)

Texas MonthlyI agree with some of what all the other reviewers have stated. I, too, am a Texas native who has subscribed for nearly 15 years (and read my father's for 10 years before that) and have seen the mag's quality ebb and flo. As copyKat states, the magazine doesn't seem to know who its target audience is (i.e. upscale, politically savvy, middle-or-the-road, city dweller/suburban, etc.) The political and investigatory writing is still top-notch. This state has a lot of problems and the magazine does not try to simply gloss them over. However, some (ok, many) of the 'fluff' pieces leave me wondering why they were included in the first place. Like ducksquat, I also dislike having to stop an article in mid-paragraph to hunt down the continuation on page 97.

I travel throughout the state and appreciate the restaurant reviews and cultural 'to-do' lists. I also enjoy the mix of current and historical events. I also very much like Kinky Friedman's Last Roundup (I think I'm in a minority, tho). The annual Bum Steer Awards are usually worth the subscription price alone.

My biggest gripe is with the 20to 30-page 'special advertising section' every single month. What used to be a onceor twice-a-year occurance is now in every issue. I know we (the subscribers) don't keep magazines afloatthe advertisers do but still...The magazine at times looks (and smells) like my wife's Vogue.

Overall, Texas Monthly is a good magazine. The state is so big (physically, culturally and politically) that I am sure it is hard to find a good balance of articles every month. Other than the politics-only rags like the 'Texas Observer' and the usually horrible 'city' magazines ('D' or 'Inside Houston') TM is all we have; they usually put out a good magazine. Changes in ownership and editorial staffs over the recent past have slightly changed the magazine's direction every couple of years, but I like the current editing team. And, Texas Monthly keeps winning awards.

Consider my, dusksquat's, copykat's, Karen's, and Sheila's reviews before buying a subscription. Then subscribe anyway.

On february 2005 I went to Houston for a week, and I had heard of Texas Monthly, so I picked it up at the airport when I got there. It was a pleasant company during my laundry at the hotel I have to say! Beautifully designed, with interesting and thought-provoking articles. I am glad I got it, so glad I even got me a subscription. Highly recommendable.

I can say you will always read deep, interesting articles in subjects that, even though they can be Texan or about situations set in that state, always are of universal interest.

Of course, there's the comprehensive "Around the State" feature that tells you about all sets of activities going through TX, from sports to ballet, music to art shows. Another mainstay is the Dining Guide, with authoritative reviews of restaurants. They will rotate the reviews, and you might find a recipe of your interest often.

The semi-editorial "Behind the Lines", mostly written by Paul Burka, might tend to discuss either Texas politics or media issues. It's worth a read, because it's always beautifully written.

And there are the columns, from the likes of Patricia Kilday Hart, Don Graham, Sarah Bird, and Oscar Casares, from many others. You'll see they will always discuss politics, or art, literature, or their life's experiences.. Or just trying to be plain funny. Bird is not as funny as her predecessor, Governor hopeful Kinky Friedman, but she's well on her way. Casares' pieces are always about his dealings with being a English-speaking Hispanic from the border.

The "Texas Monthly Reporter" is interesting, deals with (yet again) a Texan subject but almost certain to catch everyone's eye: be injured soldiers or a small-town coach who was fired (and her life turned into a misery) because of her sexual orientation.

Skip Hollandsworth, Mimi Swartz, S.C. Gwynne, and many others, will give you features that, in the time of my subscription so far, have been varied and never dull: Dan Rather, the power struggle over Methodist Hospital and Baylor University, Violence in Nuevo Laredo, the unsolved 1960s murder of Irene Garza, Texas road trips, a socialite who paid time in the state penitentiary for ripping off high-end department store Neiman Marcus...

The topics are so many and even though the first mention of them would not probably make you interested, read on because the quality of the writers and the way they research their subjects, are sure to keep you reading on.

And don't forget to check the Texas Monthly Talks section. Editor Evan Smith sits down and chats to interesting people, from Lance Armstrong to many others.

The photography? Top-notch. They have been able to afford the luxury of hosting names like Mary Ellen Mark, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, just to name a few.

It has always made me wonder why this isn't a national magazine, certainly it's better than many others who are distributed across the US. Well, you can always pick up a subscription.

Pros: Great articles, photography; comprehensive dining guide.

Cons: Too many advertising sections, the perfume samples make it look like Vanity Fair.

Buy Texas Monthly (1-year) Now

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this magazine, as I can not tell to what type of audience this is truly meant for. The articles are hard hitting, and well written. I can not dispute that. Sometimes I simply don't find them all that interesting. I enjoy the restaurant reviews, its helpful knowing of a few good suggestions when traveling, or even locally. I find the advertising in the magazine to be a bid auspicious as it seems to cater only to those high members of society that are in serious need of spa treatments and an occasional face lift. Maybe its tough finding advertising, but I find that it takes away from articles about our local government and issues.

I do feel this is totally worth the subscription price, and you are bound to find 12 dollars of reading in a years time :) This might even be a good gift idea from someone that is no longer in the area.

Read Best Reviews of Texas Monthly (1-year) Here

As a Texan, I find it refreshing to read this fine magazine. It keeps me up-to-date with the happenings in my state whether political, sports-related, recreation or any number of things. There are just as many opinionated editorials as there are factual-based articles and no punches are held back in trying to keep Texas looking like a flawless state.

I have lived around the country and it certainly helped me to keep my feet rooted in my native state. Since then, I've returned, though temporarily. It now serves me well to give me ideas of things to do, see and experience.

My main qualm with the magazine is that there seems to be as many if not more ads than stories and images. In addition, I'm not quite satisfied that many stories are continued towards the back of the magazine. This merely means that if I don't hold my place, I'll have to strive to find it again.

It has been said that everything is big in Texas and the size of the magazine is certainly filled with enough reading material to keep you busy all month long. I have yet to read a rehash of stories such as a 1,000 different takes on the Alamo. If a story is "rehashed," it is from a totally different perspective so that the magazine never stays stale. Besides that, a fun read for all who have any interest at all about what this former independent country is all about!

If you like a magazine about a conservative state written in east coast liberalism, here's your magazine. The editorial staff has never seen a liberal it did not like or a conservative it did not hate. Conversely, all the advertisements smack of money if you don't have any, don't bother. Not worth the money, even with a discount. And I'm a Texan saying that.

Westchester (1-year auto-renewal)

WestchesterWestchester magazine is an excellent magazine geared, of course, to the residents of Westchester County in New York State. I live right on the border of Westchester in Putnam County, so when I saw this magazine I picked it up-and then I couldn't put it down!

The articles are very well written; and over time you will learn a great deal about Westchester, what's going on there and more. There are articles about the history of Westchester as well. Everything is well written and beautifully laid out on the page. You find out what's good and what's considered not so good--and of course you can choose for yourself. Westchester magazine also has a plethora of fascinating pictures to go with the articles in each issue.

The magazine is printed on good quality paper and you can subscribe so you never miss an issue.

There are a few more ads than I would have liked; but a fair amount of these ads are geared toward Westchester residents.

Overall, I highly recommend this magazine as a must-have for residents of Westchester County, New York.

I've found this magazine great for keeping up with lots of things in Westchester. The issues rating restaurants, salons, etc. are great, as I didn't grow up here and it gives me some ideas when choosing places to eat, get my hair done, etc. I also appreciate knowing about concerts and other entertainment. All in all, a great buy for me.
