Chirp

ChirpI am an early childhood specialist and (most importantly) I have a 4 yr old daughter. We BOTH look forward to getting this magazine. I've tried a lot of other magazines but this one really has been the best fit for us. The stories and pictures are great and the interactive puzzles really pique my daughter's interest. The jokes are perfect for her age and really are too cute. My only regret is that it comes only 1x per month!

We highly recommend it!

My daughter can't wait for the latest issue of Chirp to come out. We're extending our subscription to a second year. This is a fun, educational magazine.

This is a great magazine. My 5 year old son loves it, and is thrilled to be getting his own magazine subscription. He is a beginning reader and the content of this magazine is entirely appropriate for his current learning level.

Delivery time was terrible. I ordered this subscription mid-August and my son has been asking nearly every day when it would arrive. We just got the first issue yesterday (11/8). I know we should allow 6-8 weeks for delivery, but it would have been nice to at least get an acknowledgement from the publisher that they received the order and were working on getting it out to us. I wonder if it would have taken so long if I had ordered directly from the publisher...?

I bought this for my 5 yo son. He likes it, but the deliver to forever to get the first issue and when they did deliver it, they sent it to my work address not my home. This is the second time this has happened. I will not be purchasing magazines from here anymore.

I ordered the item exactly a month ago. Amazon has always had a great product assortment, great prices and even better value. As a merchandise distributor, however, many things seem out of your hands. You ask me to review a product which first of all, is a gift, secondly, the intended recipient has not received. You do not allow me to proceed without reviewing so that the review will be incorrect. I knew that it would take from 4 to 6 weeks to deliver the product. What is unacceptable is that in the 4 weeks since I ordered the intended recipient has not received any notification that this gift is arriving. This was meant as a Christmas gift. So, the child--7 years old--is not even anxious or with the expectation of getting a wonderful magazine. This is not the way to deal with gifts of any kind particularly for a child. I suggest that you create anticipation by mailing periodic notices with puzzles, readings, games whatever, to keep the child engaged and interested.

Thanks

Alternative Press Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

Alternative Press MagazineFirst, I would like to say to the person who reviewed before me that you shouldn't rate the product low b/c you haven't recieved it yet because now AP has a 2 star average.

Anyway, I love this magazine. It offers a plethora of articles about your favorite bands and ones you may have never heard of. Thanks to this magazine, I discovered some of my favorte bands of all time (The Matches, The Pink Spiders, etc.). There are also atricles about unsigned bands, fashion (although it's usually only a page long), and the history of music, among other things. I often read issues cover to cover. Overall, an enthralling read everytime. Basically, if you love alternative music, you need to get this magazine. Otherwise, you're missing out.

It brightens my day whenever I see an AP sitting in muh mailbox. I agree that you shouldn't give a bad review just becasue a product hasn't come in yet. Don't let the 2 star reviews fool you, AP is just about the greatest printed source there is for music. I discovered almost every band on my mp3 player from this magazine. But I will say, if you're not into really AMAZING music, stick with your local radio station and order a subscription of J14. :P

I would like to start off by commenting on why this magazine subscription has such a low rating. Almost all magazine subscriptions I have purchased through Amazon take a few months to start receiving. It took about 4-5 months for me to get my first issue of Alt Press. Expect that delay. For the very low magazine prices on Amazon, I think its worth it. This is a very good magazine for those that enjoy Alternative Rock music. One of my favorite features of the magazine is the up and coming album release schedule it gives you in the first few pages.

When I was a teenager and in my early twenties, the monthly AP was a prized gift in my mailbox. Since I've hit my 30's it has lost touch with me and I feel my generation. It does focus on new and upcoming bands and goes a little heavy on the whole "style" thing. Nothing really to interesting unless your a teenager or in your 20's and hanging onto something. The one and only reason I'm giving it four stars is the fact that the reviews are honest and a gazillion times better than Rolling Stone or Spin. Though given that Spin and Paste are now my music magazines of choice. I will no longer purchase an AP just read the reviews while I'm at the newsstand.

Awesome magazine if you enjoy being up on the latest news of the underground music scene of today's youth. Not saying I wouldn't change a thing or two, but I'm just a perfectionist like that. It's about relatively new genres such as screamo and alternative. It's also full of unsigned bands that send in a photo and a short bio, and then Alternative Press (AP) listens to them and tells you what other bands they resemble (if any) and what song they recommend for you to listen to by them. I've renewed my subscription, being an avid scene kid that misses the scene, and I intend to renew for the rest of my life. It's my kind of magazine. They also add bonuses inside periodically like zines, patches, stickers, bracelets, assorted merch and compilation cds. I find things inside my magazine multiple times a year. If you open one, there will undoubtadley be an ad inside for buying previous editions of the magazines-as most magazines offer. This page is plastered with epic covers they've shot with national monsters like Nirvana, Blink 182, Green Day, Hatebreed. The point is, this magazine covered these bands before during and after they made it. Nothing else I've encountered comes close to that. This is a positive piece of media making huge strides for the little guys in the music industry. It's about time somebody did.

I Love Cats

I Love CatsI bought a subscription thinking it would be a nice suppliment to my Cat Fancy subscription. The "I Love Cats" magazine was very thin (hardly magazine worthy) and just didn't have any useful information for me. Overall, I was VERY disappointed in this magazine.

If you want a magazine with cute little cat stories than this magazine is for you. If you want solid information about care of your cats get a subscription to Cat Fancy.

I love this magazine. Not only does it include cat photos and facts, it includes funny stories, comics, and unique kitty products! This makes a great gift for all cat lovers!

Linux Format - Incls Linux Format - DVD

Linux Format - Incls Linux Format - DVDThere are several Linux magazines out there, but this one, Linux Format is probably #1, Linux Pro Magazine is probably #2. However, they are priced ridiculously high...about $150 to $200 per year!!! NOT BEGINNER FRIENDLY!!

It is more than about time the Linux FORMAT started offering subscriptions without the DVDs or even better an online .PDF version to lower the costs. Until then, I will stick with the MANY online resources and FREE online magazines out there.

Linux is about freedom and being advanced...being cutting edge and thinking outside the box, yet Linux Format continues to "stay the course" and only offer a subscription with DVD. The magazines pile up, the DVDs never see the light of day (how many distros can you possibly test drive in a year for God's sake???) and your money gets wasted.

As far as I am concerned and as much as I love the writing behind Linux Format, I think the executive people behind it are ripping us all off.

I've been reading Linux Format for a few years now. This magazine is typical of the excellent quality of many magazines published in England about the whole range of subjects. Having said that it's the best on the market, I should qualify that a little, by pointing out that I'm not a Linux developer/guru so I'm coming at it from the viewpoint of the relatively casual intermediate level user. There may be Linux magazines that are better if you're a Linux system administrator, or if you are developing software for Linux.

I enjoy the variety of articles covering various aspects of Linux and the "How-TO" articles as well as reviews of products and software for Linux.

I sure wish it was a bit less pricey, though.

Buy Linux Format - Incls Linux Format - DVD Now

This is, in my view, the best "using Linux" magazine on the market. There's a lot of information in each issue, it's an entertaining read, and the coverage is broad enough that you're likely to learn a fair amount if you read it cover to cover.

The quality is sometimes uneven, though. The "Roundup" feature, in particular, has of late used such narrow review criteria that it feels like looking through a keyhole. The all white male editorial staff that they seem to have settled on can be annoying as well. As others have pointed out, though, the biggest negative to this magazine is the fact that it's only available in paper form with an accompanying DVD and, outside of the UK, an astonishing subscription price. I'd love to keep getting it, but have a hard time justifying to myself a subscription price that's now north of $15 US per issue. When we start talking that kind of money I'd think that I'd rather donate it to open source projects.

I've purchased several Linux magazines over the years and find myself coming back to Linux Format time and again, from the bookstore even, regardless of the the price. But what people I don't think realize is that the magazine is not published in the US. Its published in Britain and is sold primarily there. So when its sold in the states it is, unfortunately, subject to the current exchange rate.

I agree with others, Best Linux Magazine out there, you will get a lot for you money. But it is a lot of your $$.

Flypast

FlypastFlypast is one of two of the best aviation magazines being printed today, the other being Aeroplane. If you like vintage aircraft and excellent writing, and hate those huge ads that seem to make up most of the other aviation magazines found on the magazine racks at your favorite drugstore or bookstore, this is an excellent choice for you. It's expensive, but any aviation buff should be completely satisfied with this magazine. Personally, I'd recommend a two year subscription (or longer) if it was offered. I can't recommend FlyPast highly enough. Five stars does not go far enough in praise.

This magazine is a gift to my son. He restores and builds antique planes, and says it is the best of all this type of magazine. My son would give you a much better evaluation.

Buy Flypast Now

To my mind, FLYPAST magazine is one of the best English-language aviation history magazines currently being published. I first became acquainted with it BEFORE Ken Ellis became editor, which really dates me. In the intervening years, FLYPAST has gone from strength to strength and is really a top-notch publication.

FLYPAST is a blend of aviation history and warbird happenings presented in a quaintly overstuffed English manner. The March 2010 issue, for example, is jam-packed with an appealing mix of historical articles, aviation "doings," museum news, book reviews and so on. Major articles include a description of an ATA pilot's attempt to ferry an accident-prone B-24 Liberator to its new base, missions flown by a Coastal Command Lib pilot, the RAF career of a noted Pathfinder pilot, Lone Star Flight Museum's newly-refurbished "Thoughts of Midnite" P-38, a survey of major American aviation museums, a report on Long Island's Cradle of Aviation Musuem, early RAF combats with the Italian Air Force in Africa circa 1940, the concluding part of a biography of WWII RAF ace Caesar Hull and so on. The articles are well-illustrated with b&w and color photographs, profiles, etc.

Also included in the issue are short updates on warbird restorations, aircraft movements, civil registration updates, an on-going Marking and Camouflage series, upcoming aviation meets/airshows, letters to the editor, etc.

Lately FLYPAST has been including special supplements on subjects like the P-51, 2010 Airshows, etc. at no additional cost. Since Ellis & Co. have held the price at $9.99, the reader is getting quite a bargain. (But, by all means, go the subscription route).

If you're an aviation history buff or a warbird enthusiast, FLYPAST is required reading. Highly recommended.

Wild Fibers

Wild FibersWhat a beautiful magazine about both plant and animal fibers. The stories and amazing photography in each issue makes each one unique and certainly a treasured source for information. I do look forward to the knitting pattern in each issue and enjoy looking for the different fibers that the designer has used.

"Wild Fibers" is a quarterly but it is well packed and will take the whole quarter to go through and apply.

There are unique patterns, and stories. This is as much about animal husbandry as it is about spinning. I actually apply much of the information to weaving. There are lots of great ads that show you what you are missing; it is sort of like a Christmas catalog. This magazine should be more considered as a professional trade magazine vs. a fluff grocery store magazine.

This zine is a must for the fiber crafter. I certainly never heard of New Zealand possum yarn before. Wonderful pictures, worthly of National Geographic. The ads are an education.

Quality from the paper through the wonderful articles. Thank you so much for such thoughtful worksmanship. The pictures draw one in immediately and the articles are extremely informative.

Teddy Bear and Friends (1-year auto-renewal)

Teddy Bear and FriendsI have been a subscriber of Teddy Bear magazine ever since the beginning of my career. My job is to rate the quality of different types of teddy bears so that appropriate prices can be set according to the ratings. Although it seems that my job is fun and easy, it can be extremely grueling at times. Looking at up to 5 different types of teddy bears in one day is a pain only the mind could imagine, but worse of course. Anyway, I go through this magazine every month to get the new info on teddy bears and what separates the good from the bad. So one day at work, I was rating some teddy bears and one of them bit me!! IT WAS A REAL BEAR AND IT BIT MY HAND OFF!! I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED!!!! Obviously, this has nothing to do with the quality of the magazine. I give it 5 stars of course.
