Fast Company (1-year auto-renewal)

Fast CompanyA ground-breaking magazine when it first came out, Fast Company kind of fell apart after the Dot-Com bubble. It was almost like they stopped employing journalists. Now it seems to be finding its way again by focusing on leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity rather just on the latest technology craze (there are blogs for that). This is a worthwhile subscription to have if you are interested in what's happening now and what's next in today's information economy.

Fast Company is a magazine that focuses on recent trends in business and technology from a very socially-conscious point of view. The design and format of the magazine are very appealing, and before I subscribed to it I would regularly browse it at "Borders" or "Barnes and Noble." Since I am a gadget freak, the section on the latest products and tools was always one of my favorites. The magazine tends to focus a lot on the persons behind the headlines, regularly profiling many of the industrial movers and shakers. Oftentimes, however, persons that they choose to profile are of dubious distinction at best, and the articles about them have a very strong puff-piece feel to them. On top of that, the companies seem to be eager to ascertain their socially-conscious bona fides by appearing in a positive light in this magazine, so there is also a strong sense of articles coming across as if written in conjunction with corporate PR machines. Nevertheless, the quality of writing for the most part is pretty high, and there are many interesting and stimulating stories that are worthwhile reads.

Buy Fast Company (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I recently canceled my subscription to Fast Company. I receive more magazines than I probably should and Fast Company was always the one I would get around to if I finished all the others. Although Fast Company has had some pretty interesting articles, I just can't stand reading an article or reading up to their constant fascination of the 'war between Apple vs. Facebook' or any of the other battles between larger tech companies. Who cares. Those articles become very stale and unoriginal. Fast Company is like the groupie for the dot coms or tech sector, whenever a small company like Zynga comes around, they think they're going to transform the world. They also have a lot of lists, which also gets tiresome. Their list of creative people issue pretty much takes up the whole issue, leaving nothing but some short descriptions of people. I don't want to completely bash the magazine because they occasionally do produce an interesting article being one of them. Also, I am a big fan of the infographics they have on their website. Since my feelings are somewhat mixed about Fast Company I would say it would be a good one to just pick up at the stand from time to time.

along with WIRED, i feel that Fast Company is one the few maverick publications left in this merger and recession world. Even if you don't agree with the articles or predictions, at least every one is well-thought out and INTERESTING.

I really enjoy this publication. It puts marketing and growth strategies within reach of those of us who fall asleep reading other business Mags. I've learned a ton and have been able to bring some of what I've learned to my job. It also helps consumers understand the marketing forces being put into play to capture their loyalty and their dollar.

DRAFT Magazine

DRAFT MagazineI subscribe to 3 beer mags; draft, all about beer and beer conisuer. Draft is my favorite of the 3. I really enjoy beer and I feel the Draft beer reviews are the most comprehensive. The beers they choose to review are typically from more well known breweries which makes finding them a bit easier than the beers in Beer Conisuer. The quality of the paper is nice and thick and the pictures are well done. The stories are interesting enough and short enough to keep your attention. What I dislike is that the magazine does not seem to come at exactly the 2 month in between period (it is 6 six issues a year) and the beer festivals that are advertised are usually over by the time I get my copy. Would prefert to pay more for a magazine that came monthly and had more reviews of beer.

I think the magazine is really a fun read for beer nuts like myself. However the articles tend to be a little to high end for my taste with the occasional local dive thrown in. Given that Beer in America is really at the beginning of a revolution you'd think the magazine would focus more on how these grass roots movements are growing and update the audience on their status.

The beer reviews are really interesting, usually the beer is available but not easily obtainable, which I like. Not so obscure as to be irrelevant but if you wanna try it you can't just go to BevMo, usually.

The layout is great, easy to read and find your way through.

I renewed my subscription.

Bought a deal for a subscript to Draft. Great articles and information for us beer drinkers and lovers. I found beer after beer and bar after bar to try out and loved that. I was moving out of state and have been trying to get ahold of someone to change my address since last year August. I paid good money for these magazines and can't believe that I couldn't get anyone to respond to get this handled. Have a great product doesn't excuse you from giving good customer service to the people purchasing said product. Get it together Draft Mag!

My only complaint is that there is no tablet or digital version to this magazine. I might cancel my subscription and look for something else as I hate wasting paper.

Sparkle World

Sparkle WorldMy 7 year old girl loves getting those in the mail. She can read the stories, color, do puzzles, write, draw, use recipes for making fruit desserts, play games etc. They also come with stickers. The magazine is colorful & has Strawberry Shortcake, Barbie, Moxie girlz, My little pony, Rainbow magic Polly, Angelina Ballerina, & lots of other lovable characters.

But I found a better price shopping on-line. It takes a few weeks to be delivered for the first time.

My daughter loves it!

My 4 year old LOVES this magazine. There are so many fun things for her in it. If you search the internet a bit, you will find this much cheaper at other sites. ()

Middle East Quarterly

Middle East QuarterlyIn 1994, when the first issue of this quarterly came out, I read it eagerly. And I've read every issue since then. It's my favorite journal on the Middle East.

Here is why this journal exists. As explained in that first issue, only one US President since 1948 has failed to speak "forcefully about the benefits that accrue to the United States from deep and deep relations with Israel." However, the other quarterlies about the region all disparaged the ties between the US and Israel. The other quarterlies presented Israel as a liability to the US. The other quarterlies saw Zionism as "a racist offshoot of imperialism." And they apologized for the terrorist acts of Yasser Arafat and saw recognition of his gang as a way to achieve peace in the region.

The other journals also criticized US involvement in the war to liberate Kuwait. They criticized any government in the Middle East that seemed to be vaguely supportive of the United States, such as Turkey. And they praised terrorists and warlike tyrannies to the skies.

Basically, the politics of the other journals was simple. Anything the US did was wrong, no matter what it was. Anything the terrorists did was right. And that meant that there was no journal that addressed Middle East issues from the perspective of most Americans.

I feel that if most Americans simply were accepting gross untruths, it would make sense if every single scholarly quarterly took a very different stand all the time. But the reverse has been the case. The scholarly journals other than this one, in my opinion, were spouting reactionary lies. Those journals were opponents not only of truth, but of justice and of human rights. And it is the latter problem that made me so interested in this quarterly.

You see, I support human rights.

If you support human rights, and if you have any interest in what is going on in the Middle East, this journal is for you.

Colors - Italian Edition

Colors - Italian EditionThis is a wonderful magazine. I have been reading it for years when I am able to find it on newsstands. However this is difficult to do. I am unable to order a subscription directly from the publisher becauase my bank will not allow international internet orders. So imagine my excitement when I saw that I could get a subscription through Amazon. However, this has not been very successful for me. I first ordered the subscription in July 2010. It said that I should expect my first issue in October. I actually got it in the middle of November after I had to inform them that I had not recieved it yet. That was the issue that came out in July. Now it is March 2011 and I have not recieved any more issues. I should have recieved another one in January and then be expecting another in April. This is not the case. My suggestion is if you are able to order directly from the publisher, that is what you should do. You can do that at It seems more reliable.

C O L O R S Magazine is provocative, interesting, enlightening, and a must for any coffee table. The photos tell the whole story...

Diabetic Living (2-year)

Diabetic LivingThis magazine is great. Easy to understand and packed with wonderful information to help people with diabetes. Will definately continue subscription.

I was hoping for some great Diabetic recipes. This magazine is by Better Homes and Gardens. It has a lot of ads and good information regarding diabetes. Like I said I wanted some good up to date recipes and there are very few in the magazine. I received my first issue in about 3 weeks after ordering it which I felt was great. Service was very good, just a little disappointed in the product. I will continue to read them and let you know if it improves.

Buy Diabetic Living (2-year) Now

I ordered the 2 year subscription. When the first issue arrived, I was surprised at the expiration date. It appeared that the subscription would expire a lot sooner than I thought it would. What I didn't realize was the 2 year (24 month) subscription is for 8 (eight) issues. (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter). I paid $19.97 for the 2 year subscription ($2.50 per issue which is still a good deal). Just wanted to let you know not to expect the magazine each month. Also, when you want to check up on your subscription, do not try to find it on Amazon. It will be at diabeticliving.com.

Paper Creations

Paper CreationsI like the format of this magazine, which clearly distinguishes its advertising from its projects (not always true for other paper craft magazines), and is printed on 100% recycled paper. The project descriptions are very clear, and there is even a fold-out newsprint sheet with cut-outs that go with various projects.

This American paper crafting magazine is published once a quarter and the listed 2011 subscription rate is $19.97 for four issues.

I'm basically interested in making greeting cards, and this magazine provides lots of inspiration, although it also includes other items crafted from paper, such as gift bags, boxes, and party favors.

The only drawback with this magazine's card-making projects is that most of them won't fit into standard-size American envelopes, e.g. A2 (for 4.25" by 5.5" cards), A7 (for 5"x7" cards), and A9 (for 5.5"x8.5" cards). Unless you plan to make your own envelopes, you will need to resize most of this magazine's card designs. Also, the majority of the greeting card projects seem to be square, which will cost you extra postage to mail them.

This drawback extends to the cut-out sheet--I usually end up reducing the cut-out sizes on my printer/copier so that I can get the cards I make from them to fit into standard envelopes.

Just to give you an idea of what is included in an issue of 'Paper Creations,' here are the contents of the Spring 2011 issue:

Projects: Easter Blessings card; Bunny card; Little Miracle and Little One cards; Welcome Little One card; Baby to Be card; Sweet Baby Collection (cards); Die-Cut Sentiments (cards); Miss You card; Happy Birthday crown; I Simply Adore You card; You Brighten My Day card; Happy Moments Birthday card; Flower Cake card; Mini Thank You cards; Embossed Wildflowers cards; So Sweet Collection cards; Get Well Soon card; You're Just the Best card; Spring Blooms cards; So Fabulous card (you'll need a box to mail this card); Papier Tole Rose Medley cards; Mother's Day cards; Yipes, Stripes! cards; It's Your Birthday card.

Features: Decorative Eggs; Flower Topiary and Egg; Vintage Shadowbox Frames; Baby Cards and Favors; Glittered Spring Flower; Confectioner's Cones; Happy Birthday Trio (cards and gift bag); Believe in Yourself gift bag and card.

Departments: From the Editor; The Marketplace; Pages (book reviews); Select Stores Guide; Manufacturer's & Advertiser's Index.

I have not had chance to make any cards from the book, but I reviewed every page and I am so excited to begin to make these cards. They look very easy and also easy to improvise. I know I will not be disappointed.

Cooking Pleasures

Cooking PleasuresCooking Pleasures magazine is the magazine produced by the Cooking Club of America. I very happily joined Cooking Club of America, and began receiving this magazine quite a while ago. The Club offers so much to its subscribers, but as time wore on, I could see that the Marketing Department was a tad too aggressive for my taste.

The Cooking Club of America offers their potential members numerous items to entice them to join. Members can take part in member-only contests where kitchen products and gift baskets are some of the prizes. They can be sent food items or kitchen products to review. They can also receive a cheese grater for joining!

There are some nice photographs in this publication. The recipes are not complicated either, although they do require some unusual ingredients and some that are very expensive that many people would find hard to locate. I, personally, had to forego some recipes, and others; I had to order a couple of ingredients online, because of the reasons given.

The cheese grater sent to you is a nice idea, but being it is a rotary grater, you have to squeeze very hard to get the cheese to grate. Also, the grater is made of plastic and eventually snaps in half after using it only a handful of times.

The Club also offers you a Culinary Resource Directory. The information contained in this directory is not difficult to find in a basic Internet search. You can also receive standard sized blank recipe cards. Unfortunately, due to the size of recipe cards, I do not believe anyone can even write the ingredients onto them without running out of space.

Also, part of the member benefits is to sample products for review. Potential members can see photographs of blenders, ice cream makers and much more. While a member there for three years, I did have the opportunity to review quick rise yeast and a chipotle spice. Both were nice products. They were not the glamorous photos of kitchen appliances, but it was something!

Currently, they are offering a VISA credit card with their logo. With this card, not only can you use the card like any other credit card, but also you can receive club discounts. If this is something that appeals to you, see the Club for details.

Approximately 3 months after you renew your own subscription, they start mailing you about how you should renew your membership for the following year now, so that you can help them keep club costs down. After just paying for the current year, I was not interested in paying for another year already. An idea may be to NOT contact members so soon after they just paid their subscriptions. That may save the club some money.

I have Caller ID, and I utilize it all the time, screening my calls to specifically avoid telemarketing calls. Imagine my surprise when I pick up a call and it was a representative for Cooking Club of America. I was, actually, pleasantly surprised, thinking I was about to embark on another benefit of being a member. I was most disappointed to hear the mono-toned voice on the other end of the line, reading the script, suggesting I become a Lifetime Member now. When I tell them I am not interested, they have a "new" deal for me. When I still tell them I am not interested, they have yet another deal. The calls continued after this conversation for another couple of months.

At this point, my subscription has expired. I was relieved as the telemarketing phone call really turned me off. You should have been there to see me receive my credit card statement. Cooking Club of America automatically charged my credit card with my next subscription without my permission. It was three months after my original subscription expired! As you can imagine, this was extremely upsetting.

Upon doing my research for this article, I have come to find that others have had similar experiences with this magazine. It's a shame too, as this magazine has plenty of potential. Unfortunately, their marketing department could utilize different tactics in maintaining their current membership.

Despite this magazine being very affordable, I recommend that you save your money on this one and try Fine Cooking, Cuisine at Home or Cook's Illustrated. Not only do these magazines provide better recipes, more professional tips, they also do not call you daily to get your money.

I let this one go it reminded me to much of Cuisine Magazine and I already had that one so there was no need for the two. The recipes are real simple and not very complicated at all that was a PLUS and a break from all those other Magazines I subscribed to.

It's format is very good for the person that doesn't want to get bogged down in the ads or the product information in the back of the Magazine. The Magazine is thin so it doesn't take up much space and features step-by-step pictures.

Happy Reading

Buy Cooking Pleasures Now

I have had the subscription for 2.5 years now and I enjoy getting it bimonthly. The recipes often do call for hard to find ingrediants (since I don't live in a real big city) and most of them take alot of prep time and cooking but that's why the magazine is COOKING PLEASURES. It's not Quick 'N Easy.

I gave the magazine 4 stars instead of 5 because I find that most of the recipes are "pleasurable" in comfort and not calories or fat. I love the desserts and main dishes they usually have, its just that most of the dishes are not good for the waist line. But, I guess that's why its PLEASURES and not LIGHT.

Read Best Reviews of Cooking Pleasures Here

Yes, this magazine does provide some different recipes from other magazines. Yes, you gain access to an "exclusive club" when you subscribe.

Yes, you'll get harassed constantly by The Club (I get mail from them on a nearly weekly basis, always claiming to be my "last chance!", but apparently they'll also harass you by phone).

Yes, you'll get to test some cool products, but they're not usually all that great.

I've been a member for a few years now, and I'm letting my subscription run out this time. It's just not worth it and I'm tired of all the junk mail from them. I'm glad I wrote them checks instead of giving them my credit card info so there should be no surprise billing.

Want Cooking Pleasures Discount?

The magazine itself is nice, has some pictures and the recipes can be good. Sadly the cooking club is such a nightmare. They harass you and send you things you don't want, that you have to pay to return like books. They want you to sign up as a life-time member, and will ask you to do so all of the time. The things in those letters, such as a magnet and a sponge, you have to send back if you don't want to become a life-time member.

California Explorer

California ExplorerUnless you are an expert in Cal backpacking I do not suggest buying this bland, thin, memo like paper.

I gave this as a gift to my daughter-in-law upon moving to California. She found the places described to visit as too remote, wild and was not sure worth the effort to explore. It would be a great resource for an adventurous person.

Buy California Explorer Now

I bought this for my husband as part of his Christmas present. I expected to receive a magazine. Instead it was a 16 page leaflet with holes punched in it ready to go in a file. Four of the pages are just links and information about other books and guides to buy which are about California. The paper is not nice quality and the whole thing is just black and white.

Very, very disappointed

Bluegrass Unlimited

Bluegrass Unlimitedwell, if you're a follower of the genre this is the magazine for you. each issue has at least 1 interesting, well researched article on a band you've heard of. the album reviews tend to be a bit bland hard to get candid criticism here. but the ads and listings for events are top notch, and the letters and questions sections are full of interesting historical tidbits.

Teddy Bear and Friends (1-year auto-renewal)

Teddy Bear and FriendsI have been a subscriber of Teddy Bear magazine ever since the beginning of my career. My job is to rate the quality of different types of teddy bears so that appropriate prices can be set according to the ratings. Although it seems that my job is fun and easy, it can be extremely grueling at times. Looking at up to 5 different types of teddy bears in one day is a pain only the mind could imagine, but worse of course. Anyway, I go through this magazine every month to get the new info on teddy bears and what separates the good from the bad. So one day at work, I was rating some teddy bears and one of them bit me!! IT WAS A REAL BEAR AND IT BIT MY HAND OFF!! I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED!!!! Obviously, this has nothing to do with the quality of the magazine. I give it 5 stars of course.
