Editors of SUBTROPICS have garnered work from some of the top literary writers (poetry, fiction, essays) of our time. They've also dipped into some of the work of lesser known writers from earlier decades, a nice way to expand your experience. All in all, this is first rate stuff. And the covers are beautiful.

Middle East Quarterly

In 1994, when the first issue of this quarterly came out, I read it eagerly. And I've read every issue since then. It's my favorite journal on the Middle East.

Here is why this journal exists. As explained in that first issue, only one US President since 1948 has failed to speak "forcefully about the benefits that accrue to the United States from deep and deep relations with Israel." However, the other quarterlies about the region all disparaged the ties between the US and Israel. The other quarterlies presented Israel as a liability to the US. The other quarterlies saw Zionism as "a racist offshoot of imperialism." And they apologized for the terrorist acts of Yasser Arafat and saw recognition of his gang as a way to achieve peace in the region.

The other journals also criticized US involvement in the war to liberate Kuwait. They criticized any government in the Middle East that seemed to be vaguely supportive of the United States, such as Turkey. And they praised terrorists and warlike tyrannies to the skies.

Basically, the politics of the other journals was simple. Anything the US did was wrong, no matter what it was. Anything the terrorists did was right. And that meant that there was no journal that addressed Middle East issues from the perspective of most Americans.

I feel that if most Americans simply were accepting gross untruths, it would make sense if every single scholarly quarterly took a very different stand all the time. But the reverse has been the case. The scholarly journals other than this one, in my opinion, were spouting reactionary lies. Those journals were opponents not only of truth, but of justice and of human rights. And it is the latter problem that made me so interested in this quarterly.

You see, I support human rights.

I subscribed for my husband who builds street rods. He likes it and I enjoy it too. I recommend it! Way less expensive to order through Amazon than the magazine subscription price!

I can't tell you in great detail what's great about this magazine. All I know is that my husband loves it and has been reading it for years. I think it's one of the best of its kind out there.

New Mobility

This is the best magazine out there for someone like my daughter with Spina bifida! It has some great information in it on just about every subject you can think of! Thanks!

I thought this magazine would have reviews on mobility equipment; vans, wheelchairs, etc. After reading a couple issues all I've seen are bits on how people deal with their situation. Not what I thought it would be.

Photography Monthly

I came across this gorgeous,informative mag from the UK a few months ago,and now read it almost exclusively. There are other photo-related mags that are very wonderful,but some of them are for those photographers who can afford the whole Photoshop shebang.And those mags are dedicated to Photoshop techniques and such that I will never be able to get near because of the price.However,this mag,although it references Photoshop,concentrates on other facets of photography that are within grasp of a plebe such as I.

The magazine is beautifully presented.And not a ton of ads in the middle of articles,which I find annoying.My favorite segment is"Judgment," wherein two professional photographers critique,strongly and sometimes bluntly,the photos by amateurs which were chosen for the monthly column.I have learned much from these critiques,and in fact,have actually thought the same things the critics did before I read their judgments. That's worth gold to me.The price is pretty high,but if you are at all interested in becoming a great photographer,this is the magazine for you.I keep all of my issues for reference,and to enjoy the beauty of the photographs over and over.

I have a subscription to Popular Photography and get a few other magazines every once in a while but Photography Monthly is by FAR the best one out of the bunch! I have to go downtown to get this magazine but I will make excuses a couple times a month just to go see if its at the bookstore!

This magazine doesn't have the 30-40 pages of garbage adds at the end, its nice and BIG with full color spreads of photo's... good how-to's with photoshop, good reviews on lenses... even non-canon/nikon lenses (hard to find in Pop Photo)... an all around AWESOME magazine! HIGHLY recommend!

What I like so much in that magazine is that there are more articles than ads and more technical information than commercial and marketing biased semi-true statements. Excellent photographic suggestions, very attractive writing. A very welcome difference to those US magazines full of ads, marketing, paid articles and biased reviews

I regularly peruse the photo magazines at my local Books-a-Million. I recently saw this magazine appear among the usual host of magazines, and, being an Anglophile, thought I would give it a try. I must first mention the absence of such large quantities of advertising as to render the articles well-concealed and almost superfluous, a characteristic of all American photo magazines. Secondly, the photos presented in this magazine seem far more nuanced and less perfunctory than what I am accustomed to in the mainstream American magazines. Please, spare me one more "western desert sunset through an arch of rock with Fuji Velvia" photo! I particularly like the monthly "Judgement" feature where two photographers, Cheung and Scorey, dissect, frequently with humor and without mercy, photographs submitted by readers. I learn from this! Expensive, but eminently worth every cent/ shilling!

Nature Friend Magazine

The magazine has improved over the years, now with color photos and a more convenient smaller format.

Yes, it is creationist and anti-evolutionary.

There is a hidden pictures page (not as involved as in Highlights), a drawing lesson with last month's drawing submissions from kids (many different age groups represented), a nature story (usually with character lessons as well), and other features.

It's a nice, peaceful, safe, and instructional nature magazine for kids (and some teens) that also promotes good character qualities and honors God as having created everything and everyone with wisdom and love.

We first got this magazine when our son was 5 years old. He could not read, so we would read it together, and it delighted him. With lots to do from the object search (find the objects hidden in pictures), to the questions, quizzes, to the "how-to-draw" lesson featured in each issue, there was plenty to attract all ages of readers from K to , well, my son is now 19 and still reads it!

It all started with our youngest daughter becoming 5 this past winter. Our 19 year old son found her pawing around in his hidden stash of NATURE FRIEND MAGAZINES which we had stopped getting over a decade ago. He kept carrying on about how he wished we could get it again "for her sake".

I looked all over the internet, through every directory and in old editions of the magazine, but NATURE FRIEND seemed to have disappeared.

Then we found it here on AMAZON.COM a couple of months ago. We got our first issue a few weeks ago and there is always someone reading it somewhere in the houseME INCLUDED!

The quality of the magazine is greatly improved. There is plenty to do for all ages, recipes, studies of interesting things (like where do dandelions come from and how did they get here and what do you do with them....) and interactive projects for all ages.

One of our favorite features is the HOW TO DRAW series that they still have. Very nice lessons on drawing some kind of animal or natural thing are given. Readers send in their best shot at it and many photos of their contributions are featured in future issues. There is a lot packed in to this 25 page magazineand NO ADS!

I can not rate this magazine highly enough. We stopped getting BIG BACKYARD because this magazine offers so much more and we could only get one magazine for this year. We are so glad to have found it againand it has even improved!

Nature Friend is an incredible magazine! It is difficult for fundamental Christians to find periodical materials for children that uphold our beliefs. Nature Friend does just that. It is a Creationist magazine with plenty of scientific information about nature, written for a child's level of understanding. My daughter especially loves all the input from children her age, such as letters to the editor, drawings that children have submitted, and articles and poems written by children. There are plenty of activities in each issue as well. Both my daughter and I love the "how to draw ____" page!

It is very difficult to find magazines that teach a Creation view. This is an excellently done magazine. My kids love it! Ages 3-12

Beautiful pictures. Fun activities like hidden pictures, draw lessons. Short stories that most kids can listen to and not lose interest.

I really like this magazine. I just received our first copy yesterday and am looking forward to future issues. This magazine was recommended to me through my Catholic homeschool curriculum provider as a supplement to the science lessons. What I really appreciate about it is that there are no advertisements included in it. I find it interesting to note that the readers of this 'zine seem to be as young as 7 or 8 and go up to age 14 or so. So, I know that I can use it with my sons for many years to come.

Prospect - England

'Prospect' is a relatively new British public affairs magazine. In its 'About Us' page it speaks about being 'more readable than the Economist, more romantic than the 'Spectator' etc. Its aim is to be the foremost intellectual current affairs journal in Britain.

I recommend the magazine for long, outstanding articles a recent example of is Richard Reeves on John Stuart Mill. He shows in this article the complexity of Mill's positions, his integrity, his determination to make 'ideas' serve a practical human purpose.

In the course of it he cites Mill's famous principle,"The only purpose for which power can rightfully be exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others."

I suspect no harm will be done to any reader, by from time to time reading some of the finer pieces in this journal.
