Car and Driver (1-year auto-renewal)

Car and DriverC&D was once entertaining, witty, objective and a great read. The staff worked well together and they put out a consistently good magazine. Then it went through some rough years where it got kind of tame and boring. Now, it's an ill fitting mix of new and old writers trying to be fresh and hip while being spoon fed by the car manufactures. The magazine lacks consistency, focus and any sort of clear vision as to what they're about.

C&D mostly seems to print what the biggest manufactures want them to. There have been several articles lately, such as on the new Nissan GT-R and Corvette ZR1, that literally mirror articles in other magazines even featuring some of the same quotes from the same car execs. You might as well go to the manufacture's websites and read their press releases.

There has been a lot of inconsistency in C&D's reviews. One car will be rave reviewed, and 4 issues later, will place near the bottom of a multi-car comparison test. The impression is very much whichever manufacture spends the most on ads, dinners, drinks, and other gratuities, gets top billing regardless of the quality and performance of their vehicles.

Some of the writing is entertaining, but that's offset by the same tired editors (Csere, Bedard, et al.) who largely keep writing the same stuff they've been whining about for a decade or three. The end result comes off as heavily biased, anything but objective, and an awkard mix of writing styles.

My suggestion: Save some trees and just skim the C&D website for their rare entertaining exclusive article and get the rest of your automotive news somewhere else.

Unfortunately, when Csebra...Casasba....Csabsbreaedads, er, forget it, Editor CC took over the reigns, the quality of the mag dropped with it. Readers letters, specifically those with constructive criticism, are often met with sarcastic, child-like responses. There was many a time when I agreed with a reader's letter, only to read CC shoot it down. Where is this man's humility?

The pictures and layout are still good. Some of the covers promise what looks to be an in-depth article, only to find out inside that it's a one or two page affair. All the US car magazines are swamped with ads, keeping our copy price down, the latter of which is nice. But after 16 years of subscription, I chose not to renew in March. I've been looking at recently resurrected Road and Track, and they have really changed their publication from stodgy old-fart affair to a modern, informative read.

Car and Driver doesn't need a new layout. It needs better management.

Can barely contain my disappointment. Snarky mocking editors and perspectives that are simply not helpful or even interesting I went back to C and D and could not have been more disappointed

What is it with all these bad reviews? I was 50/50 on whether to order a subscription to motor trend or car and driver. So I looked at some of the past magazines I had recently purchased (In the last 3 months as of 08/12/10) from motor trend and from car and driver. I went with car and driver, they are better. I read articles over the new 2011 Cobra Mustang in a Car and driver and in the motor trend and it was so much better in car and driver. In car and driver they talked over (I never knew) the cobra mustang isn't great because alot of the weight is in the front of the car because of the engine, and not to mention its rear axle, so on. Motor tend is a great magazine i love it but im only choosing one, if i could get both i would.

Model Military International

Model Military Internationalterrific magazine for the militay modeler order direct or from amazon...stay away from Wise Owl publication in california...they will take your money and provide you with nothing but problems trying to get delivery of it

Model Military International (MMI) magazine is by far one of the best publications on the open market, when it comes to building military models. This magazine gives the reader a first hand, in depth look, at building your military model. The magazine offers various periods of history for the model builder to choose from. There are "builds" from WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Arab/Israeli Wars, "The Cold War" periods, as well as today's modern conflicts.

Each of the articles submitted, "shows and tells" how the model builder assembled his/her model. The builder explains some of the history involved with their model, sets the tone of the model(diorama setting), and then goes into detail about how and what steps were taken to build that model, using the "kits" supplied parts and/or some of today's "aftermarket" products.

After market products are items that were produced, after a model was released. Examples of this would be Resin parts,Photoetch metal, etc. all used to enhance the look of your model. The builder then explains (thru written text) to the reader, how they built the base(used to display the model), then a step by step how-to paint, and finally, a how to give that "weathered" look to your finished project.

I have purchased this magazine in my hobby shop, and now I own a subscription. This magazine is a must have for anyone who is interested in military model building.

Mineralogical Record

Mineralogical RecordI'm into Gemstones and Jewelry Making. My husband is into all types of geology, and he collects mineral specimens. We both love this magazine!!! It is fantastic as the pictures and full detail articles are outstanding. Those pictures, though, really speak for themselves. It's almost like holding the mineral specimen in your own hands....and it's also finding out what's happening on general in the gem/geology world.

Besides, we got so much stuff with this first magazine, a free CD, and other welcome gifts. Even opportunities to order older magazines on specific topics...we've got a few that look very, very tempting.

So far, we are really enjoying this professional magazine. The magazine sells itself. I can't imagine that we'll ever give up this magazine. This is one that you start collecting in your bookcase. The quality is just first rate and exceptionally impecable.

Thanks so much E & C

If you are interested in minerals, this is a great mixture between the hobby and scientific journal. In-Depth profiles of individual mineral locations, special issues, occasionally a complete extra issue as a supplement. The last couple issues have had DVDs from Blue Cap Productions that were $20 each, just thrown in for free because of advertising sponsors. I've been subscribing for the past 7 years.

Excellent photography and articles of some of the most spectacular minerals in the world and where they came from. Photography for this magazine is all of the highest level, displaying world class specimens as works of art. Almost all of the articles are written at a level that anyone with a bit of geology can understand. In addition, many of them are very well researched and would be at home in the more hardcore scientific journals.

Arthritis Self-Management

Arthritis Self-ManagementI totally enjoyed the magazine. It has good information for all types of arthritis. The articles are full of information and easy to understand and relate to.

I was and am very disappointed in the magazine "Arthritis Mgmt." It doesn't seem like it has actual arthritis help suggestions, just a bunch of words to fill up space.

Very informative magazine for those with arthritis problems as well as autoimmune issues. Both my sister and I suffer from different forms of arthritis and need to find a way to live our best quality of life. I highly recommend this magazine for up to date information.

Batman Comics

Batman ComicsThe only other review that was posted gave this subscription 1 star. I'm 33 and have been reading comics for the better part of 21 years. When most people think about comics they think of the old 60's Batman television show or the horrendously campy movies in the 90's. Comic's, as a medium, as so much more.

The "dark age" came and comics looked for realism. Villians that no longer simply showed up to rob a bank and danced gleefully through the streets while the heroes slugged it out an then call each other "chum" or "pal". The villian's played for keeps and are deadly. Nowhere else are these villians showcased than in the Batman title. The bad guys are mostly insane and kill freely and without remorse.

Are all comics this dark? No, try Superman for example. He is the light and hope for the world and his books display that. He is the "all-american boyscout". Batman's title is dark because that is the environment in which he lives. He is a hero that was born of violence when his parents were coldly killed by a street thug in a senseless moment.

I have read this book and I see nothing wrong with it. Parent's should be aware that there are more adult themes being presented and should buy accordingly. Always know what you are giving your child, it's your responsibility. Research before you buy, don't wait until after the fact to preach morality.

It's difficult to rate a comic book series since the title changes as the writing and art teams change. Batman has been around since the 1930's and has had probably hundreds of writers and artists. At this point the team is pretty good. They have updated old villians (and taken the step of killing off some of them) as well as introducing some good new characters. Yes, the title is very dark. All of the titles in the Bat family have been like this since Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns in the mid-1980's. The relentless darkness and grittiness does tend to wear thin at times, and it sometimes feels like the writers enjoy torturing Batman a bit too much. I wouldn't mind if they lightened it a bit. The title is violent, but also generally has good character development and tends to have lots of multi-issue arcs. The supporting cast is good, and the title takes place in a deep, rich world.

A good comic for adults and teens. If you have a kid who is a Batman fan, I recommend you stick with Batman Strikes, which is aimed at a younger audience.

It's quite simple. If you are, or know someone, who is a Batman fan, this is a great gift.

If you are a Batman comic "snob", then this may not be for you.

I purchased this for my husband, a huge Batman fan, two Christmas' ago & he said to keep the subscription until he dies.

They arrive in order, which he loves.

The artists are all very very talented.

My husband, 35, loves the story lines.

See, simple.

Great story lines here. The only problem is , you get them a week late. That normally isn't a big deal, but during Death of the Family, I didn't want to wait a week. Otherwise totally worth it.

I've always loved Batman. I think it's so cool that he has no super powers. He uses his brain to fight evil. I think that makes him cooler than most hero's in the DC Universe.

D Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

D MagazineOMG, the reviewer below is a harsh critic of this magazine. Frankly, I love it, yes it's not the New Yorker, but Chr*st what is, it's just a fun read, dude. I enjoy the gossipy articles on the ends and out of Dallas, I know some of the people they write about and im amazed how accurate they are. I admit, I could not wait for the issue on the most expensive houses in dallas, or the best neighborhoods or the gossip on Mayor Miller. If this is not your kind of read, then dont buy the magazine, but for what it is..a really fun read every month..it excels...the reviewer below needs to loosen up and not be so sanctimonious, the magazine is what it is and for that i am grateful, frankly, one New Yorker is enough.

Magazine an be entertaining but contains the usual "society" pictures. Lots of useless lists of Drs, Dentists, Lawyers, etc. For me, strongest feature is the food and restaurant articles as well as a useful list of restaurants by cuisine. I like to read it in conjunction with the more interesting and irreverent weekly Observer.

Photography Monthly

Photography MonthlyI came across this gorgeous, informative mag from the UK a few months ago,and now read it almost exclusively. There are other photo-related mags that are very wonderful, but some of them are for those photographers who can afford the whole Photoshop shebang. And those mags are dedicated to Photoshop techniques and such that I will never be able to get near because of the price. However, this mag, although it references Photoshop, concentrates on other facets of photography that are within grasp of a plebe such as I.

The magazine is beautifully presented. And not a ton of ads in the middle of articles, which I find annoying. My favorite segment is"Judgment," wherein two professional photographers critique, strongly and sometimes bluntly, the photos by amateurs which were chosen for the monthly column.I have learned much from these critiques, and in fact, have actually thought the same things the critics did before I read their judgments. That's worth gold to me.The price is pretty high, but if you are at all interested in becoming a great photographer, this is the magazine for you.I keep all of my issues for reference, and to enjoy the beauty of the photographs over and over.

I have a subscription to Popular Photography and get a few other magazines every once in a while but Photography Monthly is by FAR the best one out of the bunch! I have to go downtown to get this magazine but I will make excuses a couple times a month just to go see if its at the bookstore!

This magazine doesn't have the 30-40 pages of garbage adds at the end, its nice and BIG with full color spreads of photo's... good how-to's with photoshop, good reviews on lenses... even non-canon/nikon lenses (hard to find in Pop Photo)... an all around AWESOME magazine! HIGHLY recommend!

What I like so much in that magazine is that there are more articles than ads and more technical information than commercial and marketing biased semi-true statements. Excellent photographic suggestions, very attractive writing. A very welcome difference to those US magazines full of ads, marketing, paid articles and biased reviews

I regularly peruse the photo magazines at my local Books-a-Million. I recently saw this magazine appear among the usual host of magazines, and, being an Anglophile, thought I would give it a try. I must first mention the absence of such large quantities of advertising as to render the articles well-concealed and almost superfluous, a characteristic of all American photo magazines. Secondly, the photos presented in this magazine seem far more nuanced and less perfunctory than what I am accustomed to in the mainstream American magazines. Please, spare me one more "western desert sunset through an arch of rock with Fuji Velvia" photo! I particularly like the monthly "Judgement" feature where two photographers, Cheung and Scorey, dissect, frequently with humor and without mercy, photographs submitted by readers. I learn from this! Expensive, but eminently worth every cent/ shilling!

Hype Hair

Hype HairI'm very disappointed with this magazine. It seems to be a total waste of money. I found one article that was somewhat helpful and sometimes 2-3 pictures in each issue that give me some style ideas, but it's not worth the money or my time digging through it trying to find something I can use.

this magazine is terrible, its full of ads for products that truly do not help black hair at all. The photos of the models hair look bad, 98% of the styles will not and do not work in daily life without drawing negative attention to oneself. Sorry but a hard as rock red and orange weave flipped up does not look good. I won't even comment on the makeup application of the models, its even worse. Its like every chick in the magazine has a weave and all tips and instructions really only work on girls who weave or have hair that is below their armpits.

If you are looking for a black hair magazine that provides better photos and tips and just overall better, look for the ones that come out of the UK. They are more expensive but they are fiften times better than Hype Hair.

I love this magazine because it shows multiple angles of the hairstyles. Other magazines I've encountered don't offer that feature.

I buy this magazine every month and have been since I was 16, it just now dawned on me to buy a subscription. If you like to look at multiple different hairstyles including those that might be at a hair show you would really like it. For the people that said the hairstyles are not for everyday, its because some of them are meant for an artsy effect. This magazine has multiple celebrity articles also along with a few tips and tricks. One of my favorite bits in this magazine is the fashion police type article in which they give "tickets" for horrible hair fashion crimes. They illustrate the people as cartoons and it is very funny. Yes, it has ALOT of ads, but in today's world print isn't really doing well so they have to get their money some how. They are mostly weave ads. In all you can go to wallmart, cvs, walgreens, really any store that sells magazines and try it first. I you like sophisticate's black hair magazine, you will like this.

Relix Magazine

Relix MagazineRelix magazine finds itself in a tricky spot. They could be strictly faithful to their roots, become something like a Grateful Dead nostalgia magazine, and there would be a percentage of readers who would be perfectly fine with that. I've been on email lists with people who could debate endlessly over Dead trivia, what was their best period, which were the great Dark Stars, what years did Jerry have a click track in his ears and what is the greater significance of that. On the other hand of the spectrum, they could expand their horizons, attempt to bring in as many people and styles as possible under the umbrella of "Music for the Mind." They veer a little too far in that direction these days. For example, see recent interviews with Bo Bice and Rick Moranis, or recent reviews of Rush, Rosanne Cash, and System of a Down. Nothing personal about any of those musicians, in fact I'm a big fan of Rick Moranis' work from Little Shop of Horrors and his SCTV days, but it's a matter of scope. The danger is gradually turning into something as light and mindless as what the formerly great Rolling Stone magazine has become.

Overall, I think Relix does a reasonable job though with this balance. It's hard to define what this scene is in the first place, the post-Dead, "don't call us a jam band" jam bands, jazz-funk-roots music scene. It is multifaceted and hard to keep on top of. Still, I've been turned on to lots of great music through the pages of Relix, such as Gabby La La, Karl Denson, STS9, Umphrey's McGee and the Living Daylights (see my listmania, already semi-outdated, of discs in heavy rotation of late).

I was getting free issues of Relix, I think through Grateful Dead Merchandise or some other catalog. I was enjoying it but on the fence about whether or not it would be worth it to pay and renew. I was getting a little turned off by articles trying to convince me that post-Dead Bob Weir and post-Phish Trey Anastasio are now doing the most important works of their careers. Enough.

But, then they got me. They are now including free CDs (well, free with purchase), I think something like every other issue at least, that are compilations of the bands on the scene and up and coming new bands. This may be a gimmick, but it works on me. The magazine is well worth the price if it includes the opportunity for me to expose myself to the music I'm reading about without doing any leg work. I have a family now and work about 70 hours a week, I'm not out at the Fox Theater in Boulder four times a week listening to bands anymore. I'm not traveling to festivals. If I was hipper or more techno savy, I'd be at exposed to new music from the internet. But I'm not hip anymore, if I ever was. I have little gray hairs that stick out my ears, and I listen to bootlegs and mixed tapes on a clunky sony walkman. The CD compilations included are a great way for me to stay in touch with the scene and its vast diaspora.

This is my favorite magazine. I don't have much time to go to concerts these days, but Relix keeps me tuned in with the Jamband music scene. They recently redesigned their magazine and I think that it appeals to a much larger audience now. They do everthing from camping equipment reviews to music reviews to in-depth articles on bands... anything that might relate to the live music scene. Still, they find time to devote to the Grateful Dead (The Dead, Other Ones, etc.), keeping the magazine true to its roots.
