Brain World

Brain WorldBrain World is such a wonderful magazine. It contains all the most up to date information about the brain. There's always a good balance of top neuroscience with entertainment (fun celebrity profiles and their work with the human mind) and practical tools & tips for realizing the great value of your brain. It is a visionary magazine, bringing attention to our huge potential as human beings, our natural desire to help others and the earth, and new ways for actualizing it in our lives.

Easily outstrips Psychology Today in regard to an intellectual approach to the subject matter and rivals, and in places excels Discover's quarterly brain series. Smart, cutting-edge articles that the even somewhat initiated layman will be able to comprehend, while none of the writing is at all dumbed down. A great find!

This magazine has interesting articles about the brain that will appeal to many different people. It doesn't talk up and it doesn't talk down but shares in a smart and savvy fashion information for scientists, educators, professionals, parents, students and the rest of us. It's really comprehensive. I always look forward to the next issue.

It was a gift. I had never heard of the magazine. I am assuming he liked it as he requested it.

Also, I don't mind shopping on Amazon but the surveys are rediculously time consuming. I prefer not to get surveys.

Super Picsou Geant

Super Picsou GeantReading "Uncle Scrouge" in French is a great way to improve vocabulary and the story often make me smile as well :). Unlike the previous reviewer has stated my Picsou always arrives with the wrapper intact in perfect condition.

This magazine about Scrooge McDuck (Picsou) is put out by Disney, with all the same illustrators, and stories, only written in French. We read it to improve our conversational French. It's fun, it's light, and lest you think your French skills are beyond a "children's book" let me ask you this: Can you say "shipwreck" in French? What about "jet engine," "surgical research," "shoe buckles," or "hallucination?" Reading the magazine gives you idioms you would never pick up in French class. We absolutely LOVE our magazines! On the down side, expect a delay of at least 3 MONTHS (yes, months) for the first magazine to arrive, and alas, when it does, the wrapper will be all torn off and the cover smootched. Copies of these magazines from the 70's are collected, and you can find old issues online used for around 10 bucks if you want to try one before you get a subscription.

Penthouse Forum (1-year)

Penthouse ForumNice sexual fantasy stories. I didn't call it great because the stories they had in the late 80's and early 90's were the best.

just waiting on to get here .but this book is great I've read these books for the last 10 years

If you have not yet received your soft-core porn do not give the magazine a poor rating, which just degrades the review process. Contact customer service via email and complain.

A review is supposed to be of the actual product itself. If you haven't gotten it yet, you cannot review it. So don't.

It's just standard operating procedure that you don't get the first issue in your subscription til the month following your order. It's been that way since the beginning of time when magazines were chiseled in stone.

So, guys, just chill and go look at porn on the internet til your magazine comes.

I purchased this magazine years ago. I liked it then. I was not impressed with this magazine this time. I am not sure if the magazine has changed or if it is me. I did not renew the subscription.

Batman Comics

Batman ComicsThe only other review that was posted gave this subscription 1 star. I'm 33 and have been reading comics for the better part of 21 years. When most people think about comics they think of the old 60's Batman television show or the horrendously campy movies in the 90's. Comic's, as a medium, as so much more.

The "dark age" came and comics looked for realism. Villians that no longer simply showed up to rob a bank and danced gleefully through the streets while the heroes slugged it out an then call each other "chum" or "pal". The villian's played for keeps and are deadly. Nowhere else are these villians showcased than in the Batman title. The bad guys are mostly insane and kill freely and without remorse.

Are all comics this dark? No, try Superman for example. He is the light and hope for the world and his books display that. He is the "all-american boyscout". Batman's title is dark because that is the environment in which he lives. He is a hero that was born of violence when his parents were coldly killed by a street thug in a senseless moment.

I have read this book and I see nothing wrong with it. Parent's should be aware that there are more adult themes being presented and should buy accordingly. Always know what you are giving your child, it's your responsibility. Research before you buy, don't wait until after the fact to preach morality.

It's difficult to rate a comic book series since the title changes as the writing and art teams change. Batman has been around since the 1930's and has had probably hundreds of writers and artists. At this point the team is pretty good. They have updated old villians (and taken the step of killing off some of them) as well as introducing some good new characters. Yes, the title is very dark. All of the titles in the Bat family have been like this since Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns in the mid-1980's. The relentless darkness and grittiness does tend to wear thin at times, and it sometimes feels like the writers enjoy torturing Batman a bit too much. I wouldn't mind if they lightened it a bit. The title is violent, but also generally has good character development and tends to have lots of multi-issue arcs. The supporting cast is good, and the title takes place in a deep, rich world.

A good comic for adults and teens. If you have a kid who is a Batman fan, I recommend you stick with Batman Strikes, which is aimed at a younger audience.

It's quite simple. If you are, or know someone, who is a Batman fan, this is a great gift.

If you are a Batman comic "snob", then this may not be for you.

I purchased this for my husband, a huge Batman fan, two Christmas' ago & he said to keep the subscription until he dies.

They arrive in order, which he loves.

The artists are all very very talented.

My husband, 35, loves the story lines.

See, simple.

Great story lines here. The only problem is , you get them a week late. That normally isn't a big deal, but during Death of the Family, I didn't want to wait a week. Otherwise totally worth it.

I've always loved Batman. I think it's so cool that he has no super powers. He uses his brain to fight evil. I think that makes him cooler than most hero's in the DC Universe.

Stained Glass

Stained GlassAnyone serious about stained glass and for the stained glass professional (artist, retailer, instructer, etc.) this is the magazine you MUST have. It's got it's finger on the pulse of the business better than any magazine out there. It also has excellent articles, lovely photos and valuable ads.

(NOTE: This is not for hobbyists. You won't find patterns for suncatchers, or the casual craftsperson showing off their little project. Not to belittle that work...it can be quite stunning...but this magazine is for people doing huge installations, free form glass sculptures, etc.)

The magazine does tend to favor "modern" stained glass a bit much. There isn't often much devoted to those artists who put their livelihood into churches that are looking for more "traditional" or "realistic" works. We see lots of churches (and LOTS of synagogues) with experimental or abstract work. I'm not sure that actually reflects what's happening in the "real" world. The works presented can be inspiring, but the editors could stand to broaden their focus just a little. Stained glass artisans and professionals like to appreciate all kinds of works, whether they themselves would do them or not.

Naturally, the price of the magazine is hefty. But you can't compare it to Time or People...the readership is a bit smaller! So if you make your livlihood from Stained Glass, and somehow you haven't subscribed...you need to. It's always a nice surprise each quarter to have that little treat in the mail box!

Outdoor Power Equipment

Outdoor Power EquipmentOrdered this magazine in July 2006 based upon the description. Got my 1st issue, Sep 06 in late Oct. Crammed with advertisments pertaing to help in running a business, no real article at all. Then it didn't come. I emailed Amazon in Nov, asking that I receive the missing issues, extend the subscription for the missing issues, or refund my money. Later I received a November 2005 issue and a Nov 2006 issue. I emailed Greenmedia about this and have yet to receive a reply. The two Nov issues I received are also packed with advertisments.

Not much to read at all in the way of maintaing Outdoor Power Equipment. It does list page after page after page of business's that do though.

In my opinion if you're looking for a publication that talks about small machines and the small engines that power them, avoid this this one !!!

My 2 star rating is based entirely on the smooth paper and nice pictures.

Wire - London

Wire - LondonThe Wire is the definitive source for infomation and thought regarding experimental, avant garde, or forward thinking music. My eyes and ears have been opened. The Wire has helped my musical tastes and knowledge evolve exponentially in the past 3 years. I consider the Wire to be akin to a scholarly journal...it's much more than you're average glossy Americanized-advertisment filled rags. This publication is a well needed antidote to today's profit driven, corporate controlled media garbage that we are constantly bombarded with. I know of nowhere else where Sun Ra, the Boredoms, Cannibal Ox, Miles Davis, Sonic Youth, the Grateful Dead, and Venetian Snares can peacefully co-exist with Kid 606, Merzbow, Albert Ayler, Tom Waits, John Cage, Autechre, and Bjork. I highly reccomend this magazine to anyone with discriminating tastses and intelligence. Well-written, and often including excellent CD's that you'll actually want to listen to, The Wire is definately worth the elevated import price, and a true journalistic treasure.

Avalanches of new bands, acts and performers every year creates or redefine genres and tendencies in modern music. The only way to understand things like "clicks&cuts", or "laptop techno" is to read about them, because it's almost impossible to buy or download every new album that is issued every week. The most avant garde of all magazines is the british 'The Wire' where you can read 100 record reviews and know only a 10% of the artists commented. The main areas covered are electronica, avant rock, improv and any other weird or experimental music. It's a bible for obsessive listeners like me.

Buy Wire - London Now

Literary and even-minded and yet completely gushy and fannish at the same time. The Wire does focus on jazz, but many other fringe, avant garde, and just plain great genres are also very well represented. If, like me, you feel it's increasingly difficult to stay knowledgable of musical innovators, The Wire is the perfect antidote. The Invisible Jukebox feature, in which a musician of note is made to guess the names of songs the editors play for him or her, is especially great (so great, in fact, that there's a whole book dedicated to collecting some of the best episodes of the feature so far.)

Read Best Reviews of Wire - London Here

The Wire is the mag for everything avant-guarde, experimental, innovative, remarkable or obscure in music. It covers most genres including (avant) rock, electronica, jazz, dub, folk, hiphop, intelligent techno, reggae, world and modern classical.

Individual issues contain in-depth articles, essays and interviews, plus regular features like the impressive CD -, Book -, Movie and Live reviews. World Music is usually covered in a section titled Global Ear and the mag often carries articles on various interesting aspects of rock history.

Once a year, a list of the most crucial albums of that year is published and occasionally lists + short discussions of memorable albums are provided, with titles like for example: "The 100 Most Important Records Ever Made."

The writing style is engaging and mercifully void of pretension and in this mag, even the Letters to the Editor are mostly intelligent and readable. A word of caution is in order if you get hooked on The Wire, you must be prepared to spend a lot of money on music every month.

Non-Sport Update

Non-Sport UpdateThis magazine represents what can go wrong with a fan driven magazine, namely what starts as a labor of love and a desire to connect a community of collectors eventually evolves into a hype rag for an industry. The publishers and writers get plenty of free product to review as well as ad revenue so there is no actual critique of products or the companies that produce them, even when they make horrible products that should have been great. Gotta keep that gravy train rolling. The price guide is collated from retailer info and suprise suprise the retailers who contribute are also advertisers. No accounting for actual real world pricing is reflected, prices come out, rise for a month or two and then plateau, never to be looked at again. Even after initial hype dies down and prices in the real world market (like the auction site that begins with an E) drop considerably there is no adjustment to the price guide because they are off to the next hot new thing and nobody wants to make anyone feel bad that they paid too much. It is sad that this is all there is for non sports card collectors.

THE ACTUAL COVER FOR THIS ISSUE (APRIL/MAY) IS DARTH VADER (REVENGE OF THE SITH).

PROMO CARDS INSIDE ARE: SW, HARRY POTTER (THE SORCEROR'S STONE), STAR TREK ENTERPRISE, FAMILY GUY (ANIMATION), BATTLESTAR GALACTICA AND BENCH WARMER.

ALSO, ARTICLES ON NEW MOVIES AND NEW PRODUCT UPDATES.

THE BEST OF ALL: THERE IS A REAL PRICE GUIDE/LIST IN THE CENTER OF THE MAGZAINE!
