Stern : Das Deutsche Magazin

Stern : Das Deutsche MagazinAll i wish was it is available as a e magazine save a lot of cost available to read faster

I was afraid it would never get here (it took four weeks to ship!) but now that my first issue has arrived, I couldn't be happier! The pictures are great, and the articles are full of interesting topics. Anyone interested in what Germany is like week to week should definately check out this magazine.

Buy Stern : Das Deutsche Magazin Now

Ever since I was a young child, I remember my parents subscribing to the STERN magazine, and I am continuing the tradition. Now that I live in the USA, it seems even more important for me to keep up with the current events that are taking place in Germany, as well as learning about the way that they view things that are happening around the globe, and how they view politics in the US.

This magazine provides not only political information, but also covers a variety of current topics that range from entertainment, over science, to history. I especially enjoy the diversity within the magazine, and the open minds with which the reporters approach foreign countries, cultures, and practices. The pictures in this magazine are absolutely stunning, even though the cover pictures are sometimes a little bit too "steamy" for American taste. However, it is always very refreshing to pick up the newest issue each week, and compare it to what the media in the US is providing us with.

Besides my family and friends from Germany, the STERN magazine remains my strongest link to German politics, economy, culture, perspectives, etc.

STERN and I are old friends, my parents were subscribers for years and I always enjoyed the risqué photos appearing in STERN from a bygone era during my impressionable years. I recently subscribed to keep up my German language skills and the weekly issues are overwhelming me. But I skip the interior politics of Germany and read their take on our politics. Foreign media have a fresh outlook on our situation which, unfortunately for us is not available in our domestic media, biased as it is. They have more photos than any other source and I could probably spend a whole day if I wanted to look at them all. They cover news from around the world and must have their photographers everywhere. The recent uprising in Iran was covered to a point where they displayed the murder of that unfortunate, beautiful, young woman as she lay dying on the street while several men tried to save her. Very strong stuff, but Stern doesn't pull any punches. They cover much more including movies and the latest music releases (some from the United States) with reviews. Human interest stories covered sex around the world with lots of color photos. A recent delightful shocker was their coverage of the shaving of body hair among German females and males. Use your imagination! No, use it harder, I guess politically incorrect doesn't address this issue. Enjoy.

This magazine has such great variety, from current world new coverage to human interest stories. It's a great magazine for someone with German as a second language. It always comes on the same day every week.... I highly recommend this magazine.

Vital Speeches of the Day

Vital Speeches of the DayAs the name suggests the magazine is a collection of speeches (though not always vital they are varied and have a wide appeal). There is no advertising, no photography, only a collection of 5-9 different speeches which can cover topics from education to nuclear energy to the banking system to the practice of non-violence to ... well just about anything.

I have greatly enjoyed reading it, but there is one complaint I have: The speeches are sometimes not carefully proofread. Since this is a journal devoted exclusively to written transcripts I am discouraged that there are so many typos, occasionally to the point of making a speech almost unreadable (though admittedly this extreme is rare).

Overall, I reccomend it to people interested in broadening their view of the world and looking for different viewpoints.

On a side note, I tried to order this through Amazon and after six months of no service I finally contacted the magazine and was able to get the subscription started. You may want to go directly to the magazine's website for this subscription.

I ordered this April 6, 2004 and I have received nothing. There is no legitimate reason for the process to take this long.

Still nothing.

Reflects poorly not only on the publisher but also on the website that offers the product.

This ordering system is a technological masterpiece of the new millenium!

Bravo, Jeff!

Ski Journal

Ski JournalThis magazine has renewed my faith in the soul of the sport. Other publications keep wandering further down the trendy, easy money path (Powder included) but open one of these gems and it will give you better articles, better quality photos and less commercial interruption. One issue and you will feel it. Please support these guys doing what they obviously love to do; it can't be easy these days.

Stained Glass

Stained GlassAnyone serious about stained glass and for the stained glass professional (artist, retailer, instructer, etc.) this is the magazine you MUST have. It's got it's finger on the pulse of the business better than any magazine out there. It also has excellent articles, lovely photos and valuable ads.

(NOTE: This is not for hobbyists. You won't find patterns for suncatchers, or the casual craftsperson showing off their little project. Not to belittle that work...it can be quite stunning...but this magazine is for people doing huge installations, free form glass sculptures, etc.)

The magazine does tend to favor "modern" stained glass a bit much. There isn't often much devoted to those artists who put their livelihood into churches that are looking for more "traditional" or "realistic" works. We see lots of churches (and LOTS of synagogues) with experimental or abstract work. I'm not sure that actually reflects what's happening in the "real" world. The works presented can be inspiring, but the editors could stand to broaden their focus just a little. Stained glass artisans and professionals like to appreciate all kinds of works, whether they themselves would do them or not.

Naturally, the price of the magazine is hefty. But you can't compare it to Time or People...the readership is a bit smaller! So if you make your livlihood from Stained Glass, and somehow you haven't subscribed...you need to. It's always a nice surprise each quarter to have that little treat in the mail box!

Crochet World

Crochet WorldCrochet World is more "crafty" than other crochet magazine and stays with more conservative styles in wearables. Some of the recommended yarns aren't my favorites, but you can always substitute and I sometimes re-imagine them to suit myself. If you like crochet stuffed animals, seasonal decorations, baskets, rugs, doilies, etc. this may be the magazine for you. Not my highest rated crochet magazines since I prefer more wearables and modern patterns, but this magazine has its own special niche.

I have picked up several copies of this magazine at the newstand. I have not bought one copy. The patterns in the magazine lack style. They also use rather unflattering and uncomfortable yarns (eg scratchy hairy synthetics for ponchos). I have not seen one item that I would make.

To subscribe to "Crochet World" you must enjoy making and/or wearing items such as a mulit-coloured jumper with crayons crocheted all over it. But if, like me, you cringe at the thought, check out "Crochet!" magazine.

Buy Crochet World Now

This is the best crochet magazine on the market today. Not only does it feature a variety or crocheted patterns, it uses easily found material that are not ultra-expensive. I love their columns and designers. I especially like the Crochet Potpourri column that lets me write in and ask other readers for particular patterns. They have been publishing for over 25 years and boy, do they do it right! I tell all my crocheting friends about this terrific magazine.

When I first looked at Crochet World magazine, it struck me as my grandmother's crochet magazine--dated patterns for products that no one under 90 would ever make. But as time went on I found it to be the magazine I returned to over and over again. Why? Because it has patterns for items you actually use in your day-to-day life, because it has patterns for items that are quick and easy to make for gifts, and because it actually interacts with the readers, answering questions and offering advice. And if a pattern looked too hokey at first glance, I invariably found myself coming back to it as a reference for something else--if there was no way that I would ever wear that scarf, for example, I would soon find myself needing to know how to do the stitch they used to make it. The other magazines usually had items I found visually appealing but realized I would never bother to make, so what was the point? I spend a fair amount of time going through each crochet magazine before I buy it, making sure that the patterns contained within have something I absolutely must have, and I don't always buy the same magazine--or even buy any magazine at all. But Crochet World is the only crochet magazine I ever had a subscription to, and the one I keep going back to for patterns, stitches, and ideas. I recommend that, if you're curious, you do a free trial to see what it's all about, and look it over with an eye toward whether it fits your individual needs.

Want Crochet World Discount?

I am one of the people who enjoys Crochet World magazine. It does have patterns that are dated, as in, inspired by yesteryear. If you like classic style and throwback doily patterns, you will like this magazine. It's not for everyone. Check out an issue on a newsstand and you'll be able to tell right away if this is your kind of magazine.

Utv Off Road Magazine

Utv Off Road MagazineI am a big fan of the 50" Polaris RZR and in 1 years worth of magazines (6 issues) I can't say I recall one single article about them, and for 2013 there were many changes like dual rate springs, power steering with an engine braking system, and that's just the 800, the 570 had a turf saver function as well, c'mon guys. I'll give you one more year then I might as well go back to an ATV magazine that had more coverage of the UTV's I'm interested in. If you like the 64 inch wide models then you'll like this magazine, otherwise I can't recommend it.

This is just a magazine subscription, but why is it, when they are able to start sending you renewal notices about 10 months before your subscription ends, they take so !@#$ long to start sending you the magazine? It's been a month now, and I still haven't seen the first magazine.

Scientific American Mind (1-year auto-renewal)

Scientific American MindThis is the best magazine I've read lately. It is still new, and I've only received 4 issues, but read each cover to cover, finding each article fascinating, and very accessible (unlike the parent publication, which is occasionally over my head.) It may be just because I like the subject matter but it seems to me these are subjects which would interest most people. Some recent articles (as of Oct. 2005) included why we lie, the meaning of dreams, the nature of consciousness, what causes creativitity, what is deja vu. It is one subscription which is well worth the money. The only drawback I've found is that it is quarterly sometimes it seems like a long wait between issues.

This is my favorite magazine about the mind, particularly with respect to consciousness. It's like a meeting of the minds (no pun intended) between spiritual phenomena and scientific discovery. The articles are seriously interesting and always have a new twist. I do wish it was printed more frequently however it is worth the wait for each issue.

I've been subscribing to SciAm Mind for about a year now and have been reading it at the bookstore for a couple of years. I'm a layperson, no medical training or professional background in dealing with these topics, I just have a personal interest.

While I enjoy a good bit of the magazine, I typically find myself frustrated at how it seems as though they only have a few people submitting articles. Unfortunately I don't have a copy on hand, but there's one guy (?) with a name that's about a mile long, and by the time I've finished the magazine, I'm sick of seeing his name and reading his often less-than-thrilling diatribes.

I'll likely continue subscribing to SciAm Mind because I do feel like I get something out of it, but Psychology Today is definitely my preferred of the two.

Each issue of this magazine covers very interesting topics in psychology and neuroscience, though it is by no means "Science". I expected the depth of the articles to be along the lines of Scientific American, its parent publication, and I am occasionally disappointed by the superficiality of some of the content.

Nonetheless, I find this magazine to address fascinating questions concerning the mind and to be very accessible if you do not have a background in the sciences. With that said though, if you are a neuroscientist, you may find "Nature Neuroscience" to be more satisfying.

Want Scientific American Mind (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

This is less about the "mind" and more about the brain, as far as I'm concerned. There is lots of biological science (some of it questionable) and a lot less psychology. It seems very focused on finding biological causes for emotional or psychological states which I feel is narrow and only half the story.

Reminisce

ReminisceI really enjoy this magazine . . . when it arrives. The delivery seems sporadic at best, even when you consider it is printed only 7 times yearly.

The writing is primarily done by other readers and the articles are well done and entertaining.

I bought the magazine directly through the publishers website and the same month I purchased the magazine I began getting expiration notices and offers to renew my subscription.

I have had 2 separate subscriptions and neither time have I received all 7 copies.

this is about the gold old times. comes with recipes. full of stories of seniors when they were children. and shows you advertisements from the olden days. great for people that want to go down memory lane or just want to read about it.

Buy Reminisce Now

I have had trouble with the end date on subscriptions short changing me on both Reminisce and Reminisce Extra on numerous occasions. For example:the correct end date would be Mar 2014 and then it would change to Jan 2014 which is cheating you out of one issue. I called them 3 or 4 times to correct this and they would change the date back to the correct expiration date, and after a few months they would go back to short changing me again. I got tired of being cheated and told them to cancel both magazines.

This is the best magazine out there! I love to read my Cosmo, Allure, Glamour, People and other beauty and Celebrity magazines but it is so nice to just read something wholesome and be transported back in time. Everything is PG rated and all articles and pictures are submitted by readers. Also, unlike other magazines, it can be a magazine for the whole family. I wouldn't say my kids seek it out to read it but I have caught them reading an article or two or studying a picture, asking me questions. My husband loves reading it too! I just wish it came every month!

Mystery Scene

Mystery SceneWhen the Armchair Detective stopped being published, I was without a good mystery magazine. I received a complimentary copy of Mystery Scene and I subscribed to it. The magazine is published 5 times per year and features great interviews and good book reviews. I especially enjoy their reviewing lesser known authors and books by independent publishers. My favorite part is the "Where Are They Now" which features authors who seem to have stopped writing a particular series, many of whom I have read in the past. An excellent publication!

Mystery Scene is a feast of fascinating articles, excellent interviews (check out Alexander McCall Smith, in the summer 2003 issue), intelligent reviews, and all kinds of information about the world of mystery writing. In addition, it's that rare magazine of any genre--an absolutely un-put-downable, cover-to-cover read!
