Precious Times

Precious TimesIt's a great magazine to share with teenagers and young women. It's so inspiring and informative for young women. I have a daughter 21 and I didn't give the magazine to her to read, I just read it and left it on the table, hoping she will pick it up on her own and read it. She has and now I see her packing it up with her magazines.

Adirondack Life

Adirondack LifeI got this as a gift for my mom. I ordered a subscription in October, assuming that she would receive the December issue. Unfortunately, she didn't get the magazine until mid January. We were a little disappointed that it took so long, but she really enjoys it. It's a good price and it's hard to find it stores which makes this a decent deal.

As a subscriber for many years I have finally let my subscription run out. I love the Adirondacks and the people that reside there. The magazine has chosen to focus on the wealthy and privileged that vacation in this region. I am not really interested in the process a wealthy person took to buy a parcel of land and build a private resort for himself. However, it seems that in recent years the magazine has catered to this clientele. Don't look for many articles about someone that lives in the mountains and makes a living there. However, if a story about a wealthy family buying some land for several thousands of dollars per acre and then having a house built (or moved) to suite their particular taste, then Adirondack Life is for you.

Buy Adirondack Life Now

I live in upstate NY and love the Adirondacks, not being a real native of the area. I purchased the magazine for obvious reasons wanting to read about the area I live and the photos. The magazine is a bit pricey for the material received. Seems like the majority of the magazine month to month is Advertising and little story content. One doesn't like to pay for a magazine that is all advertising. When you think about it -the vendors listing the advertising are paying for the magazine in a way and the price should be more attractive to bring in the people to buy their products. Won't be renewing. Suggest reading the few articles at the newstand instead which won't take long unless you are in the market to buy items vended in the magazine.

Clubhouse Jr

Clubhouse JrMy mom purchased Clubhouse Jr for the kids a few months ago. Published by Focus On The Family, this magazine has been around since I was a child. For ages 3-7, my kiddos fall right into this category.

I have to say that the first two issues we received were disappointing. A lot of the magazine contained pictures, drawing, and jokes sent in by readers.

Then we received this month issue!!! LOVE. IT.

They have added more pages and activities. The stories are fun and engaging. Even today we have three activities planned that are suggested in the magazine.

Different than the other magazine that we subscribe to (which I love as well), Clubhouse JR includes information about other countries. As we read, we are constantly looking at the map. I love how it exposes our kiddos to other cultures and countries throughout the world!

Here is what Focus on the Family has to say about it:

The top 5 reasons why kids love being in "The Club":

Character-building stories and exciting articles.

Cooking, baking and crafts activities.

Colorful illustrations and photography.

Fun-filled puzzles, games, riddles and jokes.

A worldwide community of Clubhouse friends.

But that's not all! Parents and grandparents love both Clubhouse Jr. and Clubhouse magazines because they build character in youngsters through the simple, life-changing, biblical values that fill each story, craft, joke and article.

This month we read a wonderful article on the Fruits of the Spirit. The abstract terms were made so simple that even my daughter understands the "fruits".

We had a subscription to this magazine for about a year and a half, for our 6yr old daughter. She LOVED it! It offerend stories, coloring pages, activities and crafts. It kept her attention through about the age of 7. As she started getting older, she lost interest and we transitioned to Clubhouse. This magazine is good for kids who like to read, but I wouldn't recomend it for those who don't. All in all, it is a great magazine giving smaller children the gift of God's Word and God's Creation through this fun, kid-friendly format. Makes a great gift!!!

I got this magazine for my grandchildren 5 & 7. They love getting mail. Even though this magazine is not especially for all ages, they both like looking and reading it.

I bought this for my granddaughter who is just beginning kindergarten. I visited her over Thanksgiving, and she was excited to show me the magazine. The articles are short just the attention duration for someone her age. I like the principles that this teaches and am happy that she enjoys the selections.

Utv Off Road Magazine

Utv Off Road MagazineI am a big fan of the 50" Polaris RZR and in 1 years worth of magazines (6 issues) I can't say I recall one single article about them, and for 2013 there were many changes like dual rate springs, power steering with an engine braking system, and that's just the 800, the 570 had a turf saver function as well, c'mon guys. I'll give you one more year then I might as well go back to an ATV magazine that had more coverage of the UTV's I'm interested in. If you like the 64 inch wide models then you'll like this magazine, otherwise I can't recommend it.

This is just a magazine subscription, but why is it, when they are able to start sending you renewal notices about 10 months before your subscription ends, they take so !@#$ long to start sending you the magazine? It's been a month now, and I still haven't seen the first magazine.

MAD Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

MAD MagazineThe magazine is hyper liberal which I am but honestly I keep politics and humor in two different parts of my brain. I still love it though. My only grip is they ship in no protection other than a light paper cover so the magazine usually looks awful after going through the mail system. For the cost they charge they should at least be in a plastic bag like every other magazine.

I started reading this magazine in the early 90's, when I was a kid. My dad had a few from the 60's and 70's, and I have expanded my collection since then to include a good amount from the 80's. That stuff was brilliant.

Artists and writers die, we know that. New artists and writers can be good, but the MAD magazine of the 2000's isn't worth buying. Why did MAD start putting in ads? Wasn't it making enough money by itself? I loved MAD for the fact that it was ad-free, and the brilliant writing and artwork, laced with biting satire. Now, the humor in there is more of the "potty humor" level, and is the kind of thing juveniles laugh over.

Now it's not worth the paper it's printed on, and CRACKED magazine has gone the same way and already ended publication several years ago. Last time I read a MAD magazine, I found myself completely bored and impatient with it, and wondering how such a great magazine could have become so lackluster.

Women and Home

Women and HomeThis is my favorite magazine. There are short stories by popular authors, wearable fashions, and great articles. It seems that if I am interested in a subject, diet, how to publish online, travel, it is there.

For some reason this magazine has been shipped from South Africa and contains South African entertainment, articles, stores etc....not what I was expecting at all!

No where did I see it mentioned that it would be a South African publication waste of $118!!!!

German Life

German LifeI'm finally ordering a subscription to German Life magazine. I've been buying it on the newstand for at least six months (maybe closer to a year), so I must admit to myself that I like it.

This is definitely a magazine for the German-American lifestyle. Each issue has articles about destinations in Germany, about German crafts, or an event going on. But the publishers are well-aware that the audience is in North America. so there are articles about geneaology and other topics of interest to the folks back home. And it may be worth reading simply for the advertisements -plenty of companies selling German goods have ads in here, so you can find a source from which to buy a beer stein or knockwurst.

Don't expect great literature. This isn't the finest, deepest prose you'll encounter, but then that's not the point. It's an enjoyable read, particularly if you want to take a virtual trip to somewhere else.

This magazine has beautiful photography and excellent articles.

It covers all of German speaking Europe (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) as well as covering German events in the United States.

There are often historical articles and nostalgic pieces as well as news stories and editorials. I especially like the travel advice as it is often for areas off the beaten path.

I end up reading it cover to cover each issue

Buy German Life Now

I bought a subscription for my mother (Munchen born, still has accent) last year for christmas. I had never seen the magazine on a news stand, so I took a chance. She was very happy to get it and she said she liked the stories. Her complaint being that there wasn't enough in it to keep her interested or wanting a renewal. I glanced through a copy and echoed her review. She enjoyed the pictures and often took the magazine to work to show her co-workers places she had been etc.

If you are looking for a quick read with TONS of advertisements for wurst and other german items, get a copy.

This magazine is excellent for getting to know the real German culture from top to bottom. Many people who have lived or gone to Germany only know various parts of Germany. This magazine shows the whole country. It not only shows the culture and aspects of the country today, but also its past. It also gives resources for traveling, health, cooking, and various indigenous products of Germany. It is really a good find for those interested in Germany's wonderful culture. It is mostly written in English with one article written in German.

Want German Life Discount?

I saw this wonderful magazine at the newsstand. I liked it so much I sent in my subscription immediately. I look forward to each issue and read it from cover to cover. There are articles on notable German, Swiss, and Austrian destinations, customs, and events as well as articles featuring German American points of interest. The photography is great. The book reviews are always informative. I usually end up making the featured recipe and many have been excellent. German Life is a wonderful magazine for all German Americans interested in their heritage; a real gem.

Some of my fellow reviewers complain that the magazine's articles aren't substantive. Hogwash! I cannot believe the smallness of some people. I truly appreciate the succinctness of the features. If you want a tome on German culture, visit the library.

O, The Oprah Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)

O, The Oprah MagazineI've purchased a lot of products on Amazon and have subscribed to Oprah's magazine for many years. I have read a lot of negative comments about Oprah's auto-renewal process over the years, so I have always intentionally purchased the one-time, oneor two-year subscription terms on Amazon, making certain not to select the auto-renewal options. And I have purchased this magazine as a gift for others multiple times too. I've never had a problem with the magazine, the subscriptions, the invoicing, or the delivery...until now.

In December, 2010, I purchased another 2-year term subscription to 'O, The Oprah Magazine' for my wife, same as I'd done in prior years. I paid for it with my American Express. The rate was $24.00 for two years. With (WA state) sales tax, it came up to $25.85 and showed up on my January statement, which was paid in full. The subscription is paid up through January, 2013.

After a few months, I started receiving renewal notices for a one-year ($18.00 per year) subscription, directly from the Oprah publisher. This is something that the Oprah magazine or their publisher has done frequently over the years, so I just ignored the renewal notices, as I've always done (seems kind of a waste of resources to solicit people who aren't scheduled to renew for another 20 months...but, if that's the way they want to run their business, whatever). Obviously, I wasn't interested in renewing again, so I recycled the solicitations. By the way, the renewal solicitation did show the 2013 expiration date right on the document, so I knew it wasn't for a prior iteration of the subscription.

Yesterday I received a collection notice from Sunrise Credit Services, Inc. for an account balance of $18.00. Yes, you read that right. They have forwarded my account to a collection agency for the non-payment of a subscription solicitation! FOR AN UNPAID SOLICITATION, not for an actual subscription or for something that I actually ordered! Amazing, but true. Either the Oprah magazine and Hearst (the publisher) have exceptionally poor records / databases, or they're running some kind of little scam that they hope enough people will fall for that it will more than pay for the cost of all those renewal solicitations they send out.

Whatever the case may be, I have to say, Oprah and Hearst, that I'm extremely disappointed in your business practices. Now I'll be wasting more time responding back to Sunrise Credit Services with all the details and trying to get them off my back. Irritated doesn't even begin to cover what I feel about your business and the fact that you've unnecessarily put this collection company on my credit history. All for a measly little $18.00 and because of your inability to keep proper records...or because of a poor attempt at a subscription scam. And if it goes beyond that, I'll be forwarding this to the office of the Washington State Attorney General.

Come on, Oprah and Hearst, why don't you spend a tiny portion of your multi-billion dollar profits on updating your records and I.T. systems, so people don't have to write horrible reviews like this?

By the way, this is the first review of any kind that I've written on any site, but I felt compelled to do so, so that others may avoid going through the same nonsense or, at least, be aware of what's potentially going on when they start seeing those renewal notices start showing up in their mail. It's a good magazine and quite often a good price through Amazon; just horrifically inept business practices on the part of the publisher.

What an absolutely unnecessary waste of my time and other peoples' time reading things like this when you could just as easily clean up and refine your subscription systems and databases.

I purchased a one year subscription online last year for both myself and my mom for the Oprah magazine. I paid online for both at the time of purchase and have an email to prove it. Now that the subscription is expiring, my mom and I both have gotten at least 3 threatening letters each. Each is entitled "INVOICING BUREAU" in red. The letter states " when you entered into an agreement to be billed later, we believed you would send your renewal payment upon receipt of you invoice. Now that your subscription is coming to an end, we still have not received your payment. You can resolve this matter quickly by returning the subscription invoice with your payment in the enclosed envelope." This letter does not include a phone number and uses a lot of red to emphasize how urgent it is to pay. It is purposefully misleading, I never led on that I wanted to renew. I went to the website and there is no way to contact them, by email, etc. after a lot of searching, I did find the cancel my subscription button.

Buy O, The Oprah Magazine (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Last night, I ordered O as a gift for my mother. When I went to check out, I saw there was a special price of $5.

This morning, I see I was charged FOUR time at the $5 rate. Called customer service, and the rep said there is nothing they can do... can't cancel, and he couldn't even explain to me how it happened. So now, I don't know if I'm getting four copies of the magazine, or if I paid more than full price for the mag.

The customer service rep said if I get four copies, I can bundle them up and send them back to Amazon for a refund... but this is a gift. Not really the way I wanted my mom's birthday to go.

I'm not sure if this is an Amazon glitch or something from the publisher, but I'm not happy about my experience with O magazine so far.

The magazine like Oprah's show covers topics about the real world that infuences our daily lives. It is also geared to middle aged women like myself. You won't find Madison Avenue's obsession with youth, beauty, & nearly nude models spread all over the pages. There are plenty of fascinating articles throughout. Such as: "Is Fear Limiting Your Life?" "Yes I Can Diet," "Sex In The Middle Ages," "Cancer-Spot, It Treat It, Beat It," etc. I also like how the magazine is organized by departments. "Special, Features, O-zone, Advice, etc. Style, Health, Books, Connections, & In Every Issue." The latter section has a Calendar with quotes on the days, O to go, Love That!, Breathing Space, Shop Guide, Food, Beauty, Something To Think About, & what I know for sure by Oprah. You can also get financial tips from Suze Orman & advice from Dr. Phil like answering a question from a working mom. The only negatives are those that truly can't be helped. Advertisiments are heavy throughout even the smallest magazines, which keeps them in business. It still deserves five solid stars.

Want O, The Oprah Magazine (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

Hearst Publications sent my mom nasty bills and letters saying she agreed to a renewal which she did not, and which she specifically wrote to them to say she did not want (something she should not even have to do).

I would NEVER buy this magazine now that I am aware of their unethical practices.

I fear for people without the skills to be able to assert their rights and suspect many go along with the renewal they never wanted and capitulate in the face of the nasty reminder / billing letters.

Sad. My mom wonders how someone like Oprah can even be associated with such practices.

You can contact Oprah subscriptions at 800-846-4020 apparently but they don't even put the phone number on the invoices and it took me much searching to find it online, no thanks to them. It's not even shown on the website they direct you to for payment.

Popular Photography (1-year auto-renewal)

Popular PhotographyI have subscribed to Popular Photography for about 5 years. I intend to continue subscribing because it has the most product reveiws of any photo magazine that I have encountered. It allows me to keep up with what's new in the way of equipment. Of particular interest are the lens tests. Pop Photo tests most new lenses for 35 mm cameras, which is more than any other source that I know of.

Now to the bad part: I find that the articles that are not related to products reviews are primarily intended for novices, and they are very repetitive. If you've subscribed for more than a year, you will find that many basic subjects are treated over and over again. And I have always been disappointed in the subjects of the articles, which are just very unimaginative. Photography is such a huge subject, with many interesting and idiosyncratic techniques available. There is no need to stick to the same handful of subjects. It's uninspirational, and it's bad editing, frankly. I do like Herb Keppler's monthly column. He's a plain-spoken guy who usually has something useful to say. More evidence of editorial laziness is that Pop Photo essentially puts their annual product guides in the magazine. This means that several of their issues are dominated by pages and pages of charts telling you what is available this year in SLR's, point-and-shoots, film, zoom lenses, etc. There is very little else in those issues. Other magazines put their product guides in a separate publication that is available on the newsstand.

In summary, Pop Photo has a wide audience and a lot of potential, but needs a better Editor. The product reviews and tests are worth the price of the subscription to me, but that is really what the magazine excells at.

I have been a subscriber for a few years and have found alot of the articles repetitive and not all that educational. Recently I have subscribed to Shutterbug which is a much better magazine for both the novice and professional photographer. Its articles are insightful and even after many years they still can teach this old photographer a few new tricks !!!!

Buy Popular Photography (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Pop Photo is a good general purpose photography magazine. The coverage of new trends and products is good and the techncial reviews of equipment can't be beat.

There is a tendency for the editorial staff to be combative with letter writers (check the letters to the editor). This can be annoying, and fortunately they've mellowed out a bit over the past couple of years.

Good travel photo column, and the readers photos segement is the first thing I look for every issue.

One caveat, if you're a digital photographer looking for in-depth digital how-tos this isn't the mag for you.

The Good

--------

* This is a nice magazine for the price.

* It has some informative articles, which maybe useful to newcomers to photography in general or the digital aspects of photography.

* If you are getting started in photography, or you are at a beginner/amateur level, this magazine can be very helpful as a stepping stone

* If you are an experienced amateur/pro, you can still like this magazine, but don't expect many in-depth/advanced topics.

* The Monthly Lens reviews are helpful to SLR/DSLR users

* For people who like to flip through magazines and even look at ads from different vendors, this is a good resource.

The Not so good

---------------

* The technical reviews of digital cameras are skin-deep compared to the in-depth technical reviews by the online photography sites (such as dpreview).

* Sometimes the reviews are word-smithed in such a way that they avoid saying negative things, so -at timesyou have to pick-up on what is not said in the review in order to figure out if there's something wrong with a product.

* The "News" are 4-12 weeks behind real time.

* If you expect in-depth or pro-level articles, those are rare.

Consumer beware segment

-----------------------

Towards the back of the magazine there are plenty of ads from various mail-order vendors. Some of them are very reputable, honorable and reliable vendors such as B&H and J&R.

However, some other vendors are less than stellar to put it in mildly. You will recognize them by the too-good-to-be-true super-low prices, and they usually practice "bait & switch" among other things. These have been documented on various websites and photography forums. If you are not familiar with all these, and you see prices that are very low, you may want to do some research before purchasing.

Want Popular Photography (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

As a budding amateur photographer, I was hoping this magazine would have good tips and interesting articles. But, instead, there's a lot of product reviews for things that I don't need. It's fine to have one section on products, but I didn't know that's what the whole magazine was about. I have a year subscription, but I just keep throwing the magazines away when they arrive. I don't have the inclination to look through them anymore.

Fine Homebuilding

Fine HomebuildingAimed at the professional builder, FH is also a great resource for the amateur and for the homeowner seeking to educate him or herself about quality construction and design. A recent issue on siding installation is a must-read for anyone thinking of having siding installed. I started reading it shortly after I bought my first house, and learned a number of things I used in repairing windows,m plastering, painting and so forth.

But where it really paid off was when I did a major remodeling job on my house, adding a second story and completely residing with cedar. Reading over back issues I found dozens of ideas for trim, insulation, a/c, siding and other details. I learned enough technique to install my own tile backsplash, install a lot of the electrical work, and do all the phone and data wiring.

Required reading for professionals, inspiration for the homewoner, and a great resource for the amateur. Six stars.

Put out by Taunton Press, the same people who bring you Fine Woodworking, along with several other high quality magazines, Fine Homebuilding is unflinching in its approach to home building. You have to do it right!

There is excellent coverage in the techniques of quality home buiding. This is not a magazine which covers putting up "cracker-box" houses. It is about creating a unique home, with features that reflect your personality and meet your needs. Now, that may sound a little high-falutin', but they succeed admirably.

This magazine is not necessarily for the average, amateur do-it-yourselfer. It is geared towards more experienced homeowners and homebuilders who are able to think for themselves. If you are not sure if you fall into this category, pick the magazine up at the newstand before you subscribe and decide for yourself.

My wife and I subscribe because someday we are going to build our own house, and this magazine gives us plenty of ideas and information to aid in our planning. Highly recommended to the right readers.

Buy Fine Homebuilding Now

Admittedly I am a big fan of everything that Taunton press puts out, but I truly think that Fine Homebuilding is a great magazine. Reader be warned though this magazine is written for professional builders/contractors and serious DIYers. If your building and home renovation skills are any less than the intermediate/advanced level, this will not be the magazine for you. There is not a lot of hand holding here. The authors of these articles often assume that you know more than the basics so that they may cover more high-end techniques.

Bottom line: Fine Homebuilding will give you great ideas for building fine homes, help you achieve success on complicated home projects, and keep you clued in to the cutting edge trends in homebuilding and renovation. If this all sounds like too much for you, take a look at Workbench or Family Handyman magazines.

Read Best Reviews of Fine Homebuilding Here

I have recommended this magazine to friends/co-workers/family that have shown an interest in architecture, woodworking, and custom houses. You do not have to be a professional to appreciate Fine Homebuilding, I happen to be in the high-end woodworking business, but I am always interested in other methods and techniques of the pro's and this periodical (in my humble opinion) is the best in its class.

Fine Homebuilding avoids the jargon and has some great writers. Their articles come from professionals with real world situations and solutions be it how to properly vent a roof to the best way to layout a kitchen. There are also some novel ideas that come from architects, designs, professionals, and homeowners.

Fine Homebuilding provided me with some excellent knowledge/methods that I have been able to apply to my profession and weekend house projects. I'm sure you will find yourself, as I do, checking the mail hopping your next issue has been delivered.

...

Want Fine Homebuilding Discount?

I've been woodworking for over 20 years, and this magazine inspires me more than magazines geared for woodworking. The articles are clearly written; the pictures are crisp and to the point (show just what's necessary without slipping in paid name-brand product shots.) And the ads seem to be kept to a minimum (sure, they are in there, but not every other page.)

If you are simply looking for ideas to show a carpenter, or looking for tips this is the magazine for you. Each month you will find:

Safety tips

Q&A

Finishing Touches

Testing power tools

Product comparison

Building skills

Replacing the old (doors, windows, decks...)

It seems that every month there is at least one article that is beyond the scope of most subscribers. But I have found this the most useful, thus far. A couple of these articles have helped me view / approach a project from a different angle, and each with a far better result than my initial design. While most of us may not be able to DO all of the incredible things shown in the magazine, we can take away some great ideas and techniques that we can use in other projects.

The best thing is that two articles have already saved me more money than the one-year subscription cost me!

I highly recommend this magazine in conjunction with Handyman magazine. Together, you can build / fix just about anything.

Discovery Girls (1-year)

Discovery GirlsMy 11-year-old daughter has been a subscriber for about 1 ½ years and absolutely adores Discovery Girls. She reads it cover to cover the day it arrives in the mail. It provides a great mix of articles about issues that affect the 7-12 age group as well as fashion tips, celebrity interviews, quizzes and more all the things the girls are looking for in a magazine! The readers provide much of the content for the magazine so it is truly a forum for girls to express themselves as well as an opportunity to see that other girls are having the same experiences. As a parent, I like the magazine because it is completely appropriate for the "tween" girl great content in the articles (real topics about real issues), limited advertising and the "models" are readers who are chosen by their answers on a questionnaire, not by the way they look. It's nice for girls who are beginning to worry about body image to be able to see normal girls just like them in the pages of a national magazine. I would definitely recommend this magazine to anyone who knows a girl in the 7-12 age range!

I am a media specialist at public school. I am in charge of ordering various media including magazines for our library. Discovery Girls was first sent to me as a sample. Upon reviewing the contents I quickly decided this was a keeper and ordered a subscription for my students.

I is so nice to see someone publishing a magazine where teen girls are presented as wholesome, age-appropriate teen girls and not as exploited, skin-bearing women. I had been hoping for years for a magazine like this. Discovery Girls is packed with topics appealing to teens. The layout is vivid and attracting. If you are concerned about content and role models for teen girls then this is the magazine you have been waiting for.

I've gotten about half a dozen issues of Discovery Girls, and every time I finished reading it, I came away dissapointed. The way DG writes sounds like a popular girl or an MTV show host talking. Discovery Girls focuses far too much on boys, fashion, makeup, and celebrities. It says right on the cover, "A Magazine for girls ages 7 and up." I know that when I was 7, I did not even think about dating boys, wearing makeup, how cool my clothes were, or whether I owned the latest CD by a singer. However, Discovery Girls puts little or sometimes even no focus on more important elements in life, such as school and family. I have found that DG even subtly hints that school and family are not important. For example, I quote, "an endless day of school" and "your parents had less complicated lives when they were tweens, so do they understand all that you're going through?" which disgusted me immensly. When school is mentioned, it is usually a page of advice on what do if a friend is going boy-crazy, or a "crash-course lesson on school supplies," which brings me to my next point.

Discovery Girls is chock-full of advertisements that annoy me greatly. In addition, the "product reccomendation and reviews" pages reccomend the same products that were advertised. This leads me to believe that Discovery Girls does not geniunely think that the products they reccomend are worth buying; they simply are endorsing the products they are paid to advertize, which I find extremely misleading. The products they advertize are also pretty expensive, for example a small chest of drawers that cost over $60. This might trigger some girls into nagging their parents into buying them things that they just saw in a magazine and thought, "Well, if Discovery Girls thinks it's cool, then it's cool, so I want it!" which will be a waste of money for the parents.

One of the most disgusting parts of Discovery Girls magazine is that they often hint that there are only two types of girls: The high-fashion, glamorous actress who loves pink and purple, and the sporty, gym-class-loving athlete. I'm not exactly sure what they are trying to promote here, but there is only one word to describe what is going on here: STEREOTYPING. I find that utterly horrible, and especially in a magazine for girls ages 7 and up. This will make 7-year-olds believe that if they aren't glamorous or sporty, they will fade into oblivion. I know that for sure I am neither, and am having no pre-teenage crises at the moment because I do not conform to these standards. To further support my point, I will give one example that stands out in my mind: there was an issue that featured a craft article on locker decorating. Sounds pretty harmless. However, there were only two themes presented: the "glamor girl," whose theme was pink, purple, and fake jewels, and the "super sports star," whose theme comprised of soccer balls and fake medals. This made me feel incredibly happy to be who I was, seeing that I am in neither camp and yet still "mysteriously" managed to be happy and lead a decent life.

There is a "Spotlight on [name of sport]" in every issue, which can be interesting, right up to the point where there is a subheading reading "What you'll need." A few issues ago, the article was on basketball, and the "what you'll need" was all of expensive Nike shoes and sports equipment. Girls who read the article will subconsciously be pressured into thinking, "I play basketball. I need expensive name-brand clothes and sports equipment," which is absolutely not true. Moderately-priced sports clothing and equpiment will work just as well as the more pricey equipment. A couple dozen issues back, LIP GLOSS was advertized on the sports page! I think this was in a highly inappropriate place, seeing that there was a message saying, "Don't forget to wear Lip Smackers lip balm while you're playing tennis!" That was the most shocking part of it. It was totally obvious that Smackers paid Discovery Girls to endorse their product, which is highly dissapointing. Plus, the "What you'll need" does not even need to be there. I am perfectly confident in saying that girls ages 7 and up know that you need a basketball and shoes to play basketball!

As my mom sometimes says, kids and teenagers are "the blind leading the blind." Discovery Girls has advice pages, but the advice is written by girls ages 7-12. Now, I think some of the advice given is not very helpful, and girls reading the advice would be better off asking a parent or trusted adult for advice. If the problem is so serious that it is worth it to send the problem in to a magazine and get it published to get advice, I think the advice should come from a responsible adult, or at least be better.

In addition, there is always a "fashion" section in the magazine, which spans over a few pages, bearing pictures of blondes wearing name-brand clothes and thumbnails of jewelry, accessories, and high-fashion items. I think that tweens are exposed enough to pop culture and are pressured daily at school to wear makeup and buy high-fashion, expensive clothes. Why promote it more in a magazine? On the subject of clothes and fashion, the "Beauty" section does not promote makeup or shaving, but it does talk about hairstyles and other issues like that. This kind of topic may be well-suited for girls ages 10 and up, who are starting to be interested in things like that, but for 7-, 8and 9-year-olds? I think not. Girls that young don't need to worry about things like that yet; growing up happens too fast anyway. They should just enjoy the time they have to be a kid.

Overall, I do admit that once in a while I find an article or a quiz I enjoy reading that has a decent moral. However, the overall message the magazine gives to girls is one similar to fashion and gossip magazines, only translated into a language that girls 8 and up can understand. I don't reccomend it.

P.S.: Instead of Discovery Girls, I HIGHLY reccomend American Girl magazine... it's more appropriate, has NO ADVERTISEMENTS, well-written and fun to look at articles, good advice, and fun projects and crafts that are unique and don't look like they were found on the internet. American Girl is a far better magazine!

Bloomberg Markets

Bloomberg MarketsI completely agree with the previous reviewer. This magazine can be purchased directly from bloomberg for significantly less and without a middleman. The magazine however is fantastic and I highly recommend it. I have problems with magazines like fortune which seem to babble on about people or events that leave me asking, "So what?" This magazine isn't a time or newsweek that is flimsy with minimal content. No, this magazine can take hours to read and is full of interesting and relevant information to both wall street and the american political system and what it means to the economy. Also, not too many advertisements, so you get more content than competitors. Great!!!

I tried to cancel my subscription to this magazine, but I was given the runaround. After first calling Bloomberg, then transferred to Bloomberg Markets, then given another toll-free number to call, and then the voice recognition system was totally failing -I gave up. Bloomberg Markets you win. I will just toss it in the recycle bin. What a waste of time and paper. Total fail.

Corvette Magazine

Corvette MagazineIf you're tired of seeing candy apple red, blown, non driveable show cars then Corvette Magazine is for you. The stories are universally well written and cover all of the different "generations" of the car. The market reports in particular are a favorite of the reviewer. The photography is excellent and spans archival, corporate, and trade sources. This is the magazine for the thinking corvette enthusiast rather that the "lets stick big tires, flames, and chrome on it and head for the autorama" group. Like it's sister publications it's most definitely a cut above the rest.

This magazine should be considered a "must read" by every Corvette enthusiast. Very well written with great photography.....
