France Football - Tuesday Edition

France Football - Tuesday EditionThis is truly the bible of all Soccer Magazines. No magazine on the planet covers the entire game as well as France Football. Loaded with Stats and great articles on players, coaches and in general everything else about the game. They're also the ones who award the prestigious Balloon D'Or (Golden Ball) which is considered to be the best of the World Soccer player of the year awards. They've been doing it much longer than FIFA. Well worth the subscription price.

Adirondack Life

Adirondack LifeI got this as a gift for my mom. I ordered a subscription in October, assuming that she would receive the December issue. Unfortunately, she didn't get the magazine until mid January. We were a little disappointed that it took so long, but she really enjoys it. It's a good price and it's hard to find it stores which makes this a decent deal.

As a subscriber for many years I have finally let my subscription run out. I love the Adirondacks and the people that reside there. The magazine has chosen to focus on the wealthy and privileged that vacation in this region. I am not really interested in the process a wealthy person took to buy a parcel of land and build a private resort for himself. However, it seems that in recent years the magazine has catered to this clientele. Don't look for many articles about someone that lives in the mountains and makes a living there. However, if a story about a wealthy family buying some land for several thousands of dollars per acre and then having a house built (or moved) to suite their particular taste, then Adirondack Life is for you.

I live in upstate NY and love the Adirondacks, not being a real native of the area. I purchased the magazine for obvious reasons wanting to read about the area I live and the photos. The magazine is a bit pricey for the material received. Seems like the majority of the magazine month to month is Advertising and little story content. One doesn't like to pay for a magazine that is all advertising. When you think about it -the vendors listing the advertising are paying for the magazine in a way and the price should be more attractive to bring in the people to buy their products. Won't be renewing. Suggest reading the few articles at the newstand instead which won't take long unless you are in the market to buy items vended in the magazine.

Campagne Decoration

Campagne DecorationCampagne = French country. Borders bookstore was still in business when I found this magazine. Though I'm not French speaking I loved it and was given a subscription for my birthday. No need to be bilingual to appreciate the novelty of style. The study time I put into each issue makes the subscription price per copy excellent. The magazine took months and months for the first copy to arrive. Magazine was ordered in March first copy came in October. Still I would order again.

I actually have not yet subscribed, so this brief review is for the magazine itself. I bought an issue at a newsstand and have looked everywhere since for it. The newsstand never got in any subsequent issues so I plan to take the plunge and subscribe because it is such a lovely periodical. Though the subscription rate is expensive it amounts to the same price as I paid per newsstand issue. It is an even lovelier magazine than Cote Sud, which has always been a favorite. Campagne Decoration seems a bit more "country" in style, more traditional Provencal homes and decor. But it is an elegant magazine, not "twee" or too sweet and cutesy but rather reflects the charming, elegant style of that lovely corner of the world called Provence. The photography is exquisite, and as the other reviewer noted, you need not be fluent in French for the pictures say thousands of words. If you are a Francophile or love the South of France lifestyle, this magazine is for you.

Loulou - English Edition

Loulou - English EditionThis is, in a way, a Canadian equivalent to Lucky. It was launched in the summer of last year and after I bought the first issue, I was hooked. It has everything you need to know about new beauty products, new trends and great new stores opening around Canada. It also has this "Remix" section about lifestyles, books, music, etc. In the back, there are also a bunch of great deals that you can use in Canadian stores. The only flaw was that the magazine layout was a bit crowded. It's a great read when you're on the road or on the way to the mall!

The magazine is fine, it is basically an advertisement for Canadian retailers however it does give some fashion tips and trends. The problem with Lou Lou Magazine is the Customer Service -it is terrible. If you receive a damaged issue or do not receive an issue at all, you have to send an email to Customer Service. After sending six emails to so-called Customer Service, my issue was never resolved. Basically they send a canned email stating they are sorry for your inconvenience and we are investigating but my problem was never resolved. I had to keep following up and dealt with the same two individuals in Customer Service who did not have the ability and/or authority to resolve the matter. It was completely frustrating and with service like this it is no wonder the publishing world of magazines is in such dire straights.

New Internationalist

New InternationalistI love this magazine, it provides and in-depth view of social, economic, and political issues from the Southern (3rd world) perspective. A little left of objective, but a must read for those who want to become informed on something other than Western propaganda. It is now slick and full color, and features a country profile in every issue along with an action guide and book and music reviews.

Caijing = Business Finance Review

Caijing = Business Finance ReviewCaijing is arguably the best Financial news (bi)weekly in China. Caijing raised its fame through the investigation of several scandal in China stock markets around 2001 and I paid special attention since. Its reports are well balanced and deep into the subject. The editors especially made a conscious effort to dance the fine line, despite the shackles. They are so far one of the most outspoken news media in mainland China. And the price on amazon is about right. It would cost you $260 to subscribe from publisher directly. I cannot comment on the delivery though since I haven't tried the amazon subscription (our library carries it).

Technology Review/MIT (1-year auto-renewal)

Technology Review/MITThis is a good source for a quick interesting survey of latest innovations. There are also a few longer articles in each issue that are well written and interesting. The content is easily understood by non-experts in the various fields discussed.

MIT's Technology Review covers a respectable range of technological topics, ranging from, for example, computer security to the guts of an iPad to anti-aging drugs, all in one issue. Also includes a neat section called "To Market," which highlights various tech products, which could be light bulbs, bomb detectors, solar charger, electric vehicles and robots. Shows just how fascinating science can be. A credit to science publishing.

I picked it up in the store and became a subscriber immediately thereafter.

Technology Review, never disappoints, wide range of subjects, with points of view fully discussed. At almost 70 the review, stimulates my mind as being at MIT 51 years ago did. Couple this with Rolling Stone, and a few publications from my profession, architecture, and I am all set for a score more of years. Peter Thomas Chris's Dad

While it won't replace my Scientific American, that's only my personal preference. MIT TR leans toward the business and economics side of technology by tracking start-ups, new tech, energy projects and other things. Of course there are more in depth articles that are always very well written it's just not ALL science like SciAm. If that's what you like, this magazine is for you.

I can't really say that I am enjoying this subscription. I expected the content to be more 'technical' somehow, with it being published MIT. Instead, it does cover in very general terms some overall technology trends, but only to the slightest level of detail. The content is so fluffy and opinion driven that It's almost like you're watching "E" TV, except it occasionally uses the word "technology". I wouldn't recommend it for a serious tech-head.

After about 30 seconds of thumbing through new issues, they go straight to the trash with the rest of my junk mail.
