Surfing (1-year auto-renewal)

SurfingSurfing is my favorite magazine. I've been surfing since I was 18 and having moved up to Northern California I do miss the tropical southern california days. Reading surfing keeps me motivated on those rainy cold days up here. Great photography and the stories of surf missions let me live vicariously!

I first encountered Surf magazine in the bathroom of my old job when I was at University. After that, I was hooked, and when I came home for the summer, I ordered it. I'll admit I don't surf, and never have, but I honestly love the way the articles are written--they actually interest you into reading them, and the whole magazine has a nice chill vibe to it. If you want to keep up with surfing and the surfing world, there is no other magazine to get!

Yachts International (1-year auto-renewal)

Yachts InternationalThis magazine is the best on the subject when it comes to super yachts. Every other month you get a magazine that is at least 250 pages of full color. Great reviews with pictures, and etc make you feel like you're on the boat. Also has lots of news regarding yachts that are currently in construction and also articles about the yachting life. I highly recommend this magazine!

It is important to note that this magazine only arrives once every two months. I knew this going into it, but bought it anyways because the price was so great. The only thing about yachts is that once you're done looking at all the pretty pictures, it's unlikely you'll want to review them again too many times over the course of 2 months before your next issue arrives.

Other than the frequency of issues, the quality of the magazine is good, with nice print quality and colorful pictures. A few articles and good coverage of new/developing yachts and mega-yachts.

Popular Photography (1-year auto-renewal)

Popular PhotographyI have subscribed to Popular Photography for about 5 years. I intend to continue subscribing because it has the most product reveiws of any photo magazine that I have encountered. It allows me to keep up with what's new in the way of equipment. Of particular interest are the lens tests. Pop Photo tests most new lenses for 35 mm cameras, which is more than any other source that I know of.

Now to the bad part: I find that the articles that are not related to products reviews are primarily intended for novices, and they are very repetitive. If you've subscribed for more than a year, you will find that many basic subjects are treated over and over again. And I have always been disappointed in the subjects of the articles, which are just very unimaginative. Photography is such a huge subject, with many interesting and idiosyncratic techniques available. There is no need to stick to the same handful of subjects. It's uninspirational, and it's bad editing, frankly. I do like Herb Keppler's monthly column. He's a plain-spoken guy who usually has something useful to say. More evidence of editorial laziness is that Pop Photo essentially puts their annual product guides in the magazine. This means that several of their issues are dominated by pages and pages of charts telling you what is available this year in SLR's, point-and-shoots, film, zoom lenses, etc. There is very little else in those issues. Other magazines put their product guides in a separate publication that is available on the newsstand.

In summary, Pop Photo has a wide audience and a lot of potential, but needs a better Editor. The product reviews and tests are worth the price of the subscription to me, but that is really what the magazine excells at.

I have been a subscriber for a few years and have found alot of the articles repetitive and not all that educational. Recently I have subscribed to Shutterbug which is a much better magazine for both the novice and professional photographer. Its articles are insightful and even after many years they still can teach this old photographer a few new tricks !!!!

Pop Photo is a good general purpose photography magazine. The coverage of new trends and products is good and the techncial reviews of equipment can't be beat.

There is a tendency for the editorial staff to be combative with letter writers (check the letters to the editor). This can be annoying, and fortunately they've mellowed out a bit over the past couple of years.

Good travel photo column, and the readers photos segement is the first thing I look for every issue.

One caveat, if you're a digital photographer looking for in-depth digital how-tos this isn't the mag for you.

The Good

--------

* This is a nice magazine for the price.

* It has some informative articles, which maybe useful to newcomers to photography in general or the digital aspects of photography.

* If you are getting started in photography, or you are at a beginner/amateur level, this magazine can be very helpful as a stepping stone

* If you are an experienced amateur/pro, you can still like this magazine, but don't expect many in-depth/advanced topics.

* The Monthly Lens reviews are helpful to SLR/DSLR users

* For people who like to flip through magazines and even look at ads from different vendors, this is a good resource.

The Not so good

---------------

* The technical reviews of digital cameras are skin-deep compared to the in-depth technical reviews by the online photography sites (such as dpreview).

* Sometimes the reviews are word-smithed in such a way that they avoid saying negative things, so -at timesyou have to pick-up on what is not said in the review in order to figure out if there's something wrong with a product.

* The "News" are 4-12 weeks behind real time.

* If you expect in-depth or pro-level articles, those are rare.

Consumer beware segment

-----------------------

Towards the back of the magazine there are plenty of ads from various mail-order vendors. Some of them are very reputable, honorable and reliable vendors such as B&H and J&R.

However, some other vendors are less than stellar to put it in mildly. You will recognize them by the too-good-to-be-true super-low prices, and they usually practice "bait & switch" among other things. These have been documented on various websites and photography forums. If you are not familiar with all these, and you see prices that are very low, you may want to do some research before purchasing.

As a budding amateur photographer, I was hoping this magazine would have good tips and interesting articles. But, instead, there's a lot of product reviews for things that I don't need. It's fine to have one section on products, but I didn't know that's what the whole magazine was about. I have a year subscription, but I just keep throwing the magazines away when they arrive. I don't have the inclination to look through them anymore.

Open Minds

Open MindsThis magazine is incredible and blows all other UFO magazines out of the water! It is done so professionally and looks amazing with full color pictures and awesome graphics. Being relatively new to this field, I think Open Minds magazine does a phenomenal job of getting readers interested in the UFO phenomenon while educating in an easy to understand manner. It also delves into the more obscure cases of the past for the seasoned ufologist. I have all of their issues and the magazine keeps getting better and better. This is definitely the best UFO and alien / extraterrestrial related magazine out there!

Satellite Direct

Satellite DirectOrdered this magazine 9 weeks ago and have yet to receive my first one. Emailed customer service twice and have never received a reply.

To get the most out of your premium channels and DVR, this is a must. I have subscribed for about 10 years and each month find movies in the listings that I would have missed otherwise. I generally make a list of all the movies before the start of the month so the can be entered into the DVR. The guide on my TV is useful only for a given day or if I know what I'm looking for. This is money well spent for any movie nut and it's ot Direct specific. You can use it with any cable provider, the channel number will be different that's all.

For $40 bucks, there is no comparison to this publication for the average or pro sattilite junkie! you won't be disatisfied.JS

Practical Horseman (1-year auto-renewal)

Practical HorsemanArticles from well known and well respected equestrians, coverage of major equine sporting events (show jumping, dressage and eventing), advice and articles on horse care and riding skills. I don't agree with all of it but overall well worth the money and time spent reading. Good photography too.

"Practical Horseman" offers information on horse health, riding tips as well as articles by or about top equestrians. I have subscribed to it for years and find it to be one of the top horse magazines going.

More for the English styles of riding, which suits me. Keeps you abreast of what is going on with top show riders, gives helpful training articles, and some health issue articles as well. This is a nice magazine to read and the Stallion issues in January are always my favorite.

This magazine, along with Dressage Today is one of the most concise, technical training manuals for equestrians. Getting this magazine in the mail is one of the most "look forward to" days of my month!! Excellent articles, product reviews and how to tips for any horseman. Well done...Practical Horseman!

Want Practical Horseman (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

Practical Horseman is a really good magazine in my opinion! I have had 5 different horse magazine subscriptions and this one is by far the best! They provide really good information in all of their articles. Every month there is a feature article on an accomplished rider, a riding exercise to try, a conformation clinic, a column where George Morris critiques 4 riders a month, and much much more. The information in this magazine could definetly be useful to beginner, intermediate or even advanced riders too. Also, there are not too many ads and very nice pictures to go with the articles. This mag provides info on many types of English riding (hunters, jumpers, dressage, foxhunting) and not just jumping as some of the covers might suggest. If you are an English rider looking to improve your knowledge on the riding and care of horses, this is the magazine for you!!!

Architectural Digest (1-year auto-renewal)

Architectural Digest'Architectural Digest' has changed over the years to become fussier and more lifestyle oriented than substantial architecture and design commentary. I still have a subscription, but intend to allow it to lapse when it expires for three primary reasons:

1) The magazine is huge and cumbersome, largely due to the massive quantity of advertisements;

2) The magazine exclusively highlights gazillion dollar homes, that only are a factor for celebrities;

3) Stylistically, the magazine seems stuck in a rut of cluttered end tables and credenzas, overstuffed pillows, and no space on a wall unoccupied by a huge, gold, gilded framed picture from eighteenth century France.

I don't like clutter, and I don't like being ornate to make a house look rich. That's why I no longer think this is a magazine that I really need. For me I will read 'Architecture' for serious architectural commentary, and 'Dwell' for reasonable (and financially attainable) interior design commentary. Thanks, but no thanks.

Architectural Digest is not an "architecture" magazine as many people believe it is. It began as an architecture magazine, but slowly became known for its coverage of building interiors that consumers wanted to see. This is true today, as the cover article is generally the about the interior of a famed actor, politician, designer, or artist's home. These articles are remniscent of a paper version of MTV's show "Cribs." While the articles about the interiors dominate, an accompanying photograph of the exterior tags along when appropriate. The articles discuss the ideas, sources, materials and inspiration behind the designs pictured. Each magazine generally has about one dozen such articles plus features.

The magazine caters to the needs of interior designers and those who can, or wish they could hire them. The magazine does not promote or favor either traditional or modern design.

AD (as it calls itself) is full of advertisements. Some people may find this irritating, but for a designer, decorator, or client searching for inspiration or sources this information is equally valuable as the articles and features. Ads are just as telling of where the industry is going and where it has been as any picture or text.

If you subscribe, do it because you know and want what AD is. It is expensive, thick, and very useful if you are interested with the cutting edge of interior design. Do not get it to learn more about architecture or for the quality or readability of its text. Pictures and advertisements are the game with AD.If you are still unsure, pick up one at the newsstand and check it out before you buy 12 issues most issues are like the others and "special" issues are frequent but not really that different from the norm.

I used to love Architectural Digest. I got to admire and be inspired by incredible homes, and I couldn't wait to get my issue every month.

However, lately, I have seen less Architecture than Interior Design, and more ads than ever. I've even let my subscription lapse. Every now and again, I'll pick it up on the magazine rack, but only if the issue is architecture heavy, or covers a particularly interesting project in depth.

Architectural Digest used to be the pinnacle in the field, but now it is just a mixed bag.

In summary, this magazine portrays houses that you can't possibly ever hope to own in an "airbrushed" presentation that can't possibly match real life; it is "house pornography". It is exciting to read and puts plenty of ideas into your head.

You have to determine whether repeated exposure to this type of media will enhance your life or make you miserable. Hey, if you have a spare million dollars and need someone to tell you what is fashionable or in good taste--this is for you!

People complain about the ads--I complain about the articles. People get in the way. I note that none of the owners of these showpiece homes have children--most are living alternative lifestyles. Actually, the house becomes the product of the relationship instead of children. It is a fascinating cultural phenomenon and this magazine is the leading journal of the movement.

Want Architectural Digest (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

AD has lost its edge over the years as it has become more focused on life style rather than interior design (witness the extensive sections dedicated to world hotels and properties for sale, or look at the breezy, non-substantive "Letters to the Editor" to get an idea that AD is not taken seriously by designers).

Still, AD usually presents one designer, or two, whose work is inspiring, and it's Special Editions ("before and after," or "designers' own homes") usually make up for some disappointing months.

Caijing = Business Finance Review

Caijing = Business Finance ReviewCaijing is arguably the best Financial news (bi)weekly in China. Caijing raised its fame through the investigation of several scandal in China stock markets around 2001 and I paid special attention since. Its reports are well balanced and deep into the subject. The editors especially made a conscious effort to dance the fine line, despite the shackles. They are so far one of the most outspoken news media in mainland China. And the price on amazon is about right. It would cost you $260 to subscribe from publisher directly. I cannot comment on the delivery though since I haven't tried the amazon subscription (our library carries it).
