Green Left Weekly

"Green Left Weekly", published by the Democratic Socialist Party, bills itself as "Australia's radical newspaper" and an alternative to the corporate-controlled media.

I have read "Green Left Weekly" both in print and online for over a decade now, though my relatives always try to dissuade me because they feel it angers me. The newspaper is indeed extremely preachy and uncompromising, never allowing the rulers they despise any compromise. The language is often terribly ranty and exaggerated, focusing consistently on the profit system that the paper believes responsible for social and ecological problems. It is also very repetitive because the focus and topics covered are so similar in every issue. It would really be a lot better if the radical left learnt that low-frequency periodicals are the best medium for carrying their messages, because they become less repetitive and preachy without losing the radically uncompromising nature of their message.

Whilst this perspective makes "Green Left Weekly" difficult as regular reading, the paper nonetheless possesses a good deal of useful information, especially about Australia's appalling environmental record, which it has (rightly) attacked ever since being first published. These messages do not fit in with the popular perspective in an extremely socially conservative country especially of its working classes whom "Green Left Weekly" claim to represent but scientifically there is no doubt of their truth.

"Green Left Weekly" also has political problems. Whilst its claims about Cuba's excellent environmental record may be true, claims that Cuba is a democracy are very dubious and are most likely related to the newspaper's tendency to blame the US and its rulers for almost every problem. The paper does not explain why many refugees leave Cuba, nor that Cuba has a powerful secret police (the G2) whose archives have never been touched by outsiders.

Nonetheless, "Green Left Weekly" is worth a read for the information it provides that no-one in Australia or abroad tends to hear. Would undoubtedly be better as a monthly or quarterly periodical that was less repetitive, though not to mention its readers' inability to achieve desperately-needed communication with the mass of Australians.

This one newspaper is a light in Australian news, one of the most restricted and corporate owned in the world. It helps keep alive the independent media. There are some negatives though. It can become become repetitive and uses ranting language occasionally eg. "Reactionary" "Labour Bondage" but overall it takes another perspective and global events that altough important are overlooked by the mainstream media.

I have purchased individual copies of Field and Stream on and off for years, but until today I never actually considered subscribing. I've purchased the past three issues at the news stand and I've thoroughly enjoyed them. I'm not a hunter, but I do occasionally fish, camp, hike, and visit the target range. I'm also interested in sustainable living and emergency preparedness. The past few issues of Field and Stream that I've purchased have offered excellent information on fishing, emergency preparedness, hiking, camping, and wildlife preservation. I've also enjoyed their campfire recipes, gardening tips, and product reviews for things like binoculars, backpacks, firearms, and fishing equipment. Their articles seem to be written by very intelligent, nature-loving individuals that have a passion for wildlife preservation and a lot of outdoor experience. It might be wise to pick up single issues from the magazine rack over a few months before you subscribe; to help you decide if it's a subscription that you'll enjoy. I recommend Field and Stream for anyone that spends recreational time in the outdoors.

If your looking for a degree in Wildlife management go to college and spend a bunch of money! If your looking for interesting reading material I would say this is my favorite outdoor magazine. By the way I am a student in Wildlife managemet and 99% of the time what they say is true. And the way they write it makes it so much nicer to read than text book!

If you are a hunter or a nature lover, the pictures in this magazine are well worth every penny. I really enjoy reading the articles and finding out about new products on the horizon. Whether its deer or fish, they always have some information I can use.

This magazine is the best one out there. Everything is discussed, from surviving in the bush to gourmet deer recipes. If your a fisher, hunter, gun enthusiast, knot tier, hiker, boater, or kite flying, this magazine is for you. It is the only subscription I have that I really read front to back. I highly recommend it to anyone.

I never liked F&S until I picked up a recent copy in my doctors office. I was impressed, and started to take a peek once in a while. This is no longer the Field and Stream with drawings and paper-bag material pages anymore....

Interweave Knits

I subscribed to this magazine one year ago. Out of the four issues I've received this year, I've knitted at least one project idea from each issue, and three so far from the fall issue alone (!) and each has turned out beautifully.

I haven't read any other knitting magazines that appeal to me as consistently as this one. I've noticed that each issue has a careful balance of projects, appealing to both genders and to all levels of knitting expertise.

Each issue contains a few "gee-whiz!" type articles in the front with interesting, exotic and sometimes downright weird news about the knitting world (like, who knew that knitting could be considered performance art?).

There's usually an exotic "catch-the-eye" or cutting-edge fashion project, followed by other apparel projects that are always beautiful, visually appealing and frequently wearable, too! Although the magazine does occasionally include items that make me shake my head in disbelief, Interweave Knits generally seems to select projects that real humans can wear without looking like freaks.

You'll also find a couple of ideas for non-apparel and/or "quick gift"-type projects in each issue, ranging from felted backpacks and novelty purses to baby hats.

Now, if all this sounds good, just wait: it gets better. The real clincher for me is that the patterns seem to have been tested and carefully proof-read BEFORE going to press. I've worked 7 projects from IWK this year, and have yet to catch a single mistake in pattern directions! Maybe I've just been lucky so far, but I noticed on the IWK website that the list of errata is amazingly short...so either they don't update errata onto their website, or they really don't allow a lot of mistakes to slip through.

In short, I think "Interweave Knits" provides a lot of bang for your subscription bucks. Two thumbs up from me!

This magazine possesses very aesthetically pleasing design and patterns. I have only been knitting for less than a year, yet I made my first sweater from a pattern from this magazine. The directions are accurate and straightforward.

The only frusterating thing about this magazine is most of the patterns showcase an advanced skill level...

I think this is becoming my favorite knitting magazine. Though not as thick as "Knitters", the articles in Interweave Knits are interesting and useful. The editors often take one project, sometimes a small one like hats or mittens, and knit it in many variations. This was also the first magazine in the US to publish patterns by Vivian Hoxbro (Domino Knits) and got everyone going on this addictive form of modular knitting.

Nowadays a magazine can easily rival a book in cost. So how come they are still in business? In the case of "Interweave Knits" published four times a year by Interweave Press, it is not hard to figure out. Innovative artists, useful articles, intriguing ads.

The magazine is more of a trade magazine for the Knitting culture. Yes there are some really weird designs in this magazine. Yet there are also some traditional, in style and color. You can not help but find your project in every issue. The projects come with complete instructions and diagrams.

I personally like the ads for different tools as ball winders, and yarns. It is interesting what you can learn from them alone.

Still the magazine goes deeper with excerpts from the latest books and other sources.

Donna Hay Magazine

I first started reading Donna Hay during a visit to Australia and I have been hooked since. It is a fabulous magazine that presents good quality ingredients in fresh and simple recipes. Fantastic plating, beautiful pictures, and lots of good practical knowledge.

However, the price Amazon is currently charging for a subscription, US$96.70, is too much. An international subscription, purchased direct from Australia is AU$96. The US dollar is not 1:1 with the Australian dollar (yet), so why does it actually cost more through Amazon? A year ago, the subscription was about US$34 from Amazon.

I've subscribed to Gourmet, Bon Appetite, even Taste Of Home. What I like about Donna Hay's magazine is that every recipe I liked had a wonderful photo (I'm very visual) and easy to follow directions. It's also not cluttered with a lot of "wine tasting in the valley" type of info or gourmet reviews of things I'll never cook. These mags are keepers and you could even mat/frame some of the photos for your kitchen wall. Remember though, the subscription is for 6 issues a year, not 12. Great gift for that cook you just are out of ideas for!

I am a veteran food professional and food stylist and believe that this is the best food magazine published in the world today. The photography is superior to all others so much so that Donna Hay has created her own iconic style that others try to emulate. I know, since I've worked for several of the top US cooking magazines where the editors bring issues of Donna to photo shoots for inspiration. This is a magazine for foodies. So don't expect decorating and craft ideas unless, of course, it's related to food.

As for other reviews regarding subscription price and the long wait to receive your first issue:

1. This magazine is published in Australia so you have to consider the additional shipping costs that are added to the annual subscription price. Exchange rates also play a part in the price. The Amazon price is actually quite a bargain when you consider individual copies sell for $18.99 at Barnes & Noble!

2. The subscription is for 6 issues. Each of these issues is the same quality as a high end cookbook with 100+ recipes per issue. This is the only food magazine that is worth collecting and you will never want to part with one once you see the gorgeous food photography.

3. Yes, there is a long wait to receive the first issue. A month or two longer than a domestic magazine. Remember, the magazine is only published every 2 months and then it is shipped half way around the world. That is going to take some time...but it is so worth the wait!

Donna has a way to inspire professionals and home cooks alike to never compromise on fresh, seasonal ingredients and to relish the fact that good food can be simple to prepare.

Found this magazine when I visited Australia and subscribed to it immediately. I have every issue and I refer to them all the time...the recipes are easy to follow and have relatively few ingredients....and are always delicious....A real winner and her books are great as well D

The previous reviewer gave this publication an unfair review. I work in a "no kill" shelter and many, many people do not know about sticky tape, covered litter boxes, etc. The articles are written so everyone can read and understand them, and contain a great deal of useful information. Also, not all shelters are "kill" shelters. One just has to make a few phone calls or jump on the web to find them.

This magazine is okay, but like a previous reviewer said, it often states the obvious. It does not have very many "hard-edged" articles. It is often too "matter of fact", and too careful not to make judgments. It never makes recommendations you couldn't guess yourself, and always tells you to ask your vet before doing anything beyond common sense. Even when it cannot make recommendations without examination of the cat, it does not fully explain all of the possibilities and their consequences for your cat -it just says "see your vet". It intentionally avoids mentioning products by brand, to avoid the appearance of endorsement, even if there might be something good (or bad) to say about a particular product.

I think "Catnip" is better.

This is a very informative newsletter covering a broad range of topics having to do with cat health and welfare. The articles are well written and easy to understand, often spiced with a touch of humor. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning more about cats.

Excellent information contained in this publication.It is published by Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine Feline Health Center.Therefore I was recently appalled when their circulation director tried to rip me off for $24.My checking account records clearly showed that the balance had been paid several weeks prior to him pulling that stunt.

While it's technically not a trade magazine, they cover new equipment announcements in a trade magazine manner cost, distribution and advertising plans.

If you combined "Fortune" with "The Sporting News" that's basically GolfWeek. They basically approach it as "the business of golf."

Which might sound like faint praise but it is actually a high compliment they approach everything with a objective distance even when they are doing feature stories on golfers. They are sometimes harsh but always honest & fair. While some golf writers dance around an issue of a Sunday collapse, they are honest and forthright enough to address the issue without getting personal or vindictive. This is not the magazine on trying to knock 2 strokes off your game, that's what the other magazines are for.

Just like "Fortune" for golf, it's on the business of golf: the people, the tours, the equipment and what's going on. It is a lot of info, news, analyses and statistics. It's not for everyone but if you or the intended reader is someone who tries to figure out on Thursday which channel has opening round coverage or watches the Golf Channel regularly, this is one of the best magazines in America right now, not just on golf (and I read about 85 magazines a month). Get it. It's great. (you can also check out their website to get an idea of the excellent writing but amazon.com is a much more inexpensive subscription).

I know many people who are confirmed addicts to the game of golf and one publication they like to read is Golfweek. This magazine is the only golf publication I know about that is issued with this level of frequency, making it an ideal choice for those who can't seem to get enough golf.

Since this magazine is published every week, some of the information contained within might seem a little bit boring to certain readers. There isn't always enough going on in the world of golf to fill a magazine from one week to the next. But the editors of Golfweek manage to find enough to complete each issue. They do so by stressing any news, minor or major, about golf and by including recent scores and worldwide rankings of golfing professionals and even of college golf teams.

Golfweek doesn't dedicate as much space as other golf magazines to the area of learning, and this could disappoint some readers who want to learn some new tips. Statistics, scores, and breaking news seem to be foremost in importance with this magazine. This is nice, but I would like to see a little more advice from the pros on how to reduce my handicap and improve my golfing game.

Golfweek is still a good publication for those who are fanatical about the game of golf. It doesn't offer many personal stories about the different personalities of golf and it doesn't offer many learning tips. But those who are addicted to golf will love it nonetheless. It brings the world of golf to your mailbox every week, with updates on scores, tournaments, and news.

Practical Horseman is a really good magazine in my opinion! I have had 5 different horse magazine subscriptions and this one is by far the best! Finescale Modeler

This magazine is well written. Currently, Matt Usher is the editor and he is slowly making the magazine more like some of the British Magazines. That's a good thing because if things don't change then they become obsolete.

FSM is easy to use and every month follows a standard format. There is the magazine index of articles; a break down section of what's new and that is divided up by scale, type of vehicle or model, and books/supplies usually a featured article or build of a model; several conversion articles or how-to articles; and then important work bench reviews.

FSM is very influential on the industry. Every year they offer a poll on the most requested models. Since 2000 nearly every requested 1/350th large scale ship has been made. Also, FSM will pull no punches on the work bench reviews. Lindberg made a ghastly 1/72 scale Japanese submarine with a miss-formed bow. FSM slammed Lindberg on that and challenged the firm on where they did their research. Furthermore, FSM has lamented the fact that Lindberg may produce a 1/200th scale "Graf Zeppelin" aircraft carrier and not one person can figure their marketing campaign.

Another thing a potential reader of this magazine should know is FSM does not go down in value. This reviewer has been reading the magazine since the mid-1990s and once sold a large collection of the magazine when moving into a new house. It was quite nice to find out there is a large market for the used magazines. Indeed, if you're doing a special conversion, such as making the proposed F2N-4 "swept wing Banshee" (competitor to the F9F Cougar) then you'll need this magazine because it will tell you how to convert the kits.

FSM is the best general military modeling magazine on the market. They cover everything from cars to rockets but spend 95% of their printed material on military items and of that amount the bulk covers the subject of WWII. So, a reader will see more than a few write ups on various models of M-4s, Panzer IVs, and T34s but will be treated to occasional articles on Hummers in Baghdad or a write up on scratch building a giant 1/96th scale ship model.

This magazine has helped me develope my skills as a modeler for quite a while. I am still a novice but I have to say, using some of the tips and tricks found in these articles has really helped me. Every now and then I look at some of the detail that I would have otherwise missed. It makes the difference between being a toy and being a historical story. My dad used to build models all the time and I remember he always told me that building the model was the easy part, making it look real is the FUN (hard) part! The weathering tricks and scratch building how to's are all awesome even for an intermediate/skilled modeler. Okay, now I am rambling on. It's a great buy! Get it now, you won't regret it!

The only real downside to this is the heavy emphasis on tanks and planes. I wish they'd put up more articles on other things. Ships or rockets, for example. That's why it doesn't get my 5 stars.

I have been reading Finescale since about 1986. It has covered just about ever kind of modeling there is, so there is always some new information no matter what kind of modeler you are. There are other model magazines out there, that may be slightly better (depending on what kind of models you build), but those are more expensive. I build all kinds of models, so I have stayed with this one for many years. Once you start reading it, you will want to keep re-subscribing as well. It also makes a great gift for kids who have an interest in creating things.
