New Scientist - Us Edition

I've read many, many science magazines from "Discovery" and "Scientific American" through professional journals (astronomy and computer science) and I can say without qualification that "New Scientist" is the very best. The quality of writing is high and the articles are cutting-edge science, plus an "Inside Science" in-depth feature (the issue I'm currently reading has a lead-in to its 'Inside Science' article: "They eat stars for breakfast. They flout the laws of physics. But do black holes really exist and what would you see if you fell into one?") The side-texts connected to the article are labelled: "Don't Panic!;" "Spaceman Turns to Spaghetti;" and "Black Hole Factories on Earth. There are illustrations of the evolution of a star into a black hole, "The Tardis Effect," "How the Sky Falls in," and "Signals from a Binary System." There are also references to websites and printed literature for further research.

The writing in "New Scientist" is not as stodgy as in "Scientific American" and not as watered-down as in "Discovery." Plus it comes every week (more or less, since I live in America and it ships from Great Britain). I usually sit down and read it from cover to cover, even the NewScientist Jobs section (which is now taylored for Americans if that's where you happen to live).

If you subscribe to "New Scientist," you are also given access to their online archive of articles.

Two drawbacks: "New Scientist" is rather pricey and many of the jokes are incomprehensibly British.

This magazine is by far the best I have read. It includes real, cutting edge science of every field. The diversity and insight the articles bring have made it a must have. I am currently finishing up my undergrad degrees in physics, math and neuroscience and this magazine offers up to date research in all fields. One suggestion, but one off the newstand and subscribe through the included leaflet-only fifty one dollars.

I have read this magazine for more than twenty years now, so I can say I am addicted. I like to keep informed of what is happening on the science, technology, and policy front. I find the shorter and lighthearted articles ideal for this. The reader does get a good dose of the famous British humour. I can not read the Feedback section without laughing aloud. I also respect New Scientist for daring to take political stances, and exposing bad governmental science policies, or even tackling the environmental movement if they stoop to using questionable science.

i have found that this magazine is ideal for the layman.even the most difficult subjects are dealt with such that i can follow them. the range covered is facinating. i look forward to each weeks edition and enjoy every one.it doesnot blind one with science rather it opens ones mind. cannot recommend highly enough. i would award 10 out of 5.

I enjoy reading New Scientist as it provides interesting and insightful information on scientific news and breakthroughs written by journalists who seem to know what they are doing. The magazine has a wide breadth of coverage which makes it possible for any scientist to find an area that is interesting and relevant to them.

This is a magazine with good, enlightening and well written articles on recent research that one can look forward to reading every week.

However, sometimes the magazine strays into irrelevant and arguably unscientific areas like politics which can offend some readers. Thankfully, this is not overdone and the reader should enjoy the various fascinating scientific articles that the magazine produces at a reasonable price.

News Photographer

Not always happy, not often happy, this takes you inside news photography. This is the journal of NPPA. Some of the stories are feel good, some are gut wrenching sad bloated Jonestown bodies. Great member services, slight PC...stuff. Weegee would have used this publication as a tool and evidence of brotherhood among those who do news photography. PDN is a similar publication for a slightly different emphasis. Suggest you join NPPA ( magazine comes with membership ) and subscribe to PDN. PDN and News Photographer are the real thing.

Banknote Reporter (1-year)

Guitar Techniques

I've been buying guitar magazines since 1990 and have a collection of hundreds of them. This one is the best! It has always been good, but these days I think it stands out from the crowd even more. I've seen magazines start out good, full of useful information and sheet music, then plunge to the depths of crappy industry gossip and little else. These guys have kept a strong loyalty to the musicians who wanna play, rather than the ones who care about image and nothing much else.

Guitar Techniques gives you a really wide variety of styles to learn. So if you're into metal, country, jazz, folk, or whatever, I've seen it covered. They have regular workshops on beginner tips and advanced soloing techniques. Nothing escapes these guys. They also cover different artists all the time. So if you want to learn the latest song by The Darkness, or Jeff Beck, or Hendrix, or whatever the latest metal band on the scene is playing, then it will eventually turn up here.

It's common for them to delve deeply into a particular person's playing style as well. In that case, you'll get a whole chapter of the mag on, say, "Diamond" Darryl and how he gets his sound, followed with examples of how he plays and in which songs he employs special techniques or scales.

The sheet music itself is comprehensive and easy to follow. Not only that, but this mag comes with a CD each month so that you can pick up things by ear. They also include 'Jam Tracks' that allow you to play along with tabbed songs adding in your own guitar lines.

Plus, of course, the have all the regular magazine stuff: letters to the editor, equipment reviews, album reviews, artist news, and so on. But the bulk of the magazine is taken up with things you can get your fingers into right away.

I highly recommend this magazine subscription to anyone who is wanting to take their guitar playing to a greater level; it has something for everyone at all levels.

Most guitar magazines seem to be heavy on discussion of artists but light on actual music. GT still talks about artist's styles, but then gives you the tab and standard notation for one of their works or a class on how to solo in their style. A standard issue contains sections like rock, jazz, acoustic fingerstyle, Funk and country, followed by workshops on (for eg.) using altered tunings, increasing fretting speed, and other interesting things.

The accompanying CD gives multiple examples for each piece or exercise, usually with tracks played at different speeds and/or and example track and a backing track to play with.

The only downside to this magazine is that you hardly have time to work on eveything you wanted to before the next issue comes out.

I agree with the other reviewers who point out the many useful music tools in this mag. The UK is where English started so if you like literate writers rather than being pitched to like an 8 year old you'll like this magazine. My gripes are that I can buy them at big box bookstores for pennies more than the subscription rate. The price fluctuates with market $ vs Pound/Euro and the delivery time for the 1st issue is 12 to 16 weeks! The stores get them faster. So if they had a better subscription deal and faster delivery I would definitely subscribe. Besides anyone that calls a tube a valve and a wrench a spanner is okay in my book.

Practical Sailor

Sailboats may ride with the wind and float on the water, but they are absolutely

sold with hype and romance. If you consider that the sailing tradition itself is

a combination of elitist romanticism and macho stoicism, it seems almost

natural that it's hard to get straight information about anything.

Most Sailing magazines are advertising-driven. That means that they make their

money by catering to their advertisers, so 'product reviews' are really pretty much

puff pieces. Even the most experienced and forthright sailors have limited

experience with brands of boats and types of gear.

Into the gap comes Practical Sailor. PS accepts no advertising. It does rigorous testing

and includes information on products that are never advertised. (Has any other boating

magazine reviewed the splendid Rhodes 22?). It is thoroughly indexed and non-subscribers

can order reprints of articles on topics of interest to them.

Note that the reviews tend to be of very high-end items and that an annual

subscription is a pricey $84 for 20 issues. That's a lot of money in the world

of magazines, but not much money in the world of sailboats.

This magazine is great!!! The Weddings magazine is for the bride who wants great ideas and advice for a stylish and elegant wedding. The magazine includes great articles for wedding tips, sanity savers and after the wedding advice. Weddings does contain advertisements for attire, BUT that is not their only service. This magazine also includes wonderful "real wedding" stories that are inspiring and give great ideas for your own wedding. I highly recommend this magazine for a more mature bride, or for a bride who already has picked out her dress but still wants great wedding ideas.

I get Martha Stewart's, Brides, and Bridal Guide magazines. (I'm a magazine addict... and there was a magazine sale on Amazon...) The price for this magazine is a little high... and I don't really like that there are only 4 a year. (Brides is 12 and Bridal Guide is 6.) This magazine is definitely more crafty than any other wedding magazine out there, which is expected since it's a Martha Stewart product.

I think it's definitely more geared for decoration than dresses for example, but the ideas are fun... and even nice for non-wedding things. The main drawback I feel is that I am signed up to their email newsletter, and I feel like I basically get the magazine in bits and pieces throughout the 4 month period for free... Obviously, it's a little different to have a hard copy in front of you versus looking online at things... that's the main reason I still get the magazine... but I would say for the most part all the cool ideas are available through their wedding website...

If I could give this magazine more than 5 stars, I would. Martha helped me organize, plan, decorate, and personalize my wedding with her creative and affordable do-it-yourself ideas. With all the other bridal magazines out there that simply consist of advertisements and small articles on meaningless details, or things even a man would know about weddings, MSW stands out from the pack, and thank goodness. I am a graphic designer and wanted my wedding to be personalized and unique, and, well, "me." This magazine has great ways to pull your ideas together for the full package not just how to create name cards for example, but templates for you to take and make your own. Every issue I read cover to cover, and then went back for more. Don't waste your time and money on any other bridal magazine unless you just care about what nail color is hot for brides, or the best way to wear your hair if it is long... blah blah blah. This is it, as a recently wed bride, I swear by it.

Finescale Modeler

This magazine is well written. Currently, Matt Usher is the editor and he is slowly making the magazine more like some of the British Magazines. That's a good thing because if things don't change then they become obsolete.

FSM is easy to use and every month follows a standard format. There is the magazine index of articles; a break down section of what's new and that is divided up by scale, type of vehicle or model, and books/supplies usually a featured article or build of a model; several conversion articles or how-to articles; and then important work bench reviews.

FSM is very influential on the industry. Every year they offer a poll on the most requested models. Since 2000 nearly every requested 1/350th large scale ship has been made. Also, FSM will pull no punches on the work bench reviews. Lindberg made a ghastly 1/72 scale Japanese submarine with a miss-formed bow. FSM slammed Lindberg on that and challenged the firm on where they did their research. Furthermore, FSM has lamented the fact that Lindberg may produce a 1/200th scale "Graf Zeppelin" aircraft carrier and not one person can figure their marketing campaign.

Another thing a potential reader of this magazine should know is FSM does not go down in value. This reviewer has been reading the magazine since the mid-1990s and once sold a large collection of the magazine when moving into a new house. It was quite nice to find out there is a large market for the used magazines. Indeed, if you're doing a special conversion, such as making the proposed F2N-4 "swept wing Banshee" (competitor to the F9F Cougar) then you'll need this magazine because it will tell you how to convert the kits.

FSM is the best general military modeling magazine on the market. They cover everything from cars to rockets but spend 95% of their printed material on military items and of that amount the bulk covers the subject of WWII. So, a reader will see more than a few write ups on various models of M-4s, Panzer IVs, and T34s but will be treated to occasional articles on Hummers in Baghdad or a write up on scratch building a giant 1/96th scale ship model.

This magazine has helped me develope my skills as a modeler for quite a while. I am still a novice but I have to say, using some of the tips and tricks found in these articles has really helped me. Every now and then I look at some of the detail that I would have otherwise missed. It makes the difference between being a toy and being a historical story. My dad used to build models all the time and I remember he always told me that building the model was the easy part, making it look real is the FUN (hard) part! The weathering tricks and scratch building how to's are all awesome even for an intermediate/skilled modeler. Okay, now I am rambling on. It's a great buy! Get it now, you won't regret it!

The only real downside to this is the heavy emphasis on tanks and planes. I wish they'd put up more articles on other things. Ships or rockets, for example. That's why it doesn't get my 5 stars.

I have been reading Finescale since about 1986. It has covered just about ever kind of modeling there is, so there is always some new information no matter what kind of modeler you are. There are other model magazines out there, that may be slightly better (depending on what kind of models you build), but those are more expensive. I build all kinds of models, so I have stayed with this one for many years. Once you start reading it, you will want to keep re-subscribing as well.
