Nonlinear Phenomena in Complex Systems

Nonlinear Phenomena in Complex SystemsI guess if you want to understand the non-linearities of complex systems, this is the place to start. Personally though, I prefer the competing magazine available at your local newsagent, 'Inverse complexity of linear systemic synergy as applied to the non-linear asystemic hypercomplex'

Mine sit in a pile next to the loo. Visitors seem to like it.

New Scientist - Us Edition

New Scientist - Us EditionI've read many, many science magazines from "Discovery" and "Scientific American" through professional journals (astronomy and computer science) and I can say without qualification that "New Scientist" is the very best. The quality of writing is high and the articles are cutting-edge science, plus an "Inside Science" in-depth feature (the issue I'm currently reading has a lead-in to its 'Inside Science' article: "They eat stars for breakfast. They flout the laws of physics. But do black holes really exist and what would you see if you fell into one?") The side-texts connected to the article are labelled: "Don't Panic!;" "Spaceman Turns to Spaghetti;" and "Black Hole Factories on Earth. There are illustrations of the evolution of a star into a black hole, "The Tardis Effect," "How the Sky Falls in," and "Signals from a Binary System." There are also references to websites and printed literature for further research.

The writing in "New Scientist" is not as stodgy as in "Scientific American" and not as watered-down as in "Discovery." Plus it comes every week (more or less, since I live in America and it ships from Great Britain). I usually sit down and read it from cover to cover, even the NewScientist Jobs section (which is now taylored for Americans if that's where you happen to live).

If you subscribe to "New Scientist," you are also given access to their online archive of articles.

Two drawbacks: "New Scientist" is rather pricey and many of the jokes are incomprehensibly British.

This magazine is by far the best I have read. It includes real, cutting edge science of every field. The diversity and insight the articles bring have made it a must have. I am currently finishing up my undergrad degrees in physics, math and neuroscience and this magazine offers up to date research in all fields. One suggestion, but one off the newstand and subscribe through the included leaflet-only fifty one dollars.

I have read this magazine for more than twenty years now, so I can say I am addicted. I like to keep informed of what is happening on the science, technology, and policy front. I find the shorter and lighthearted articles ideal for this. The reader does get a good dose of the famous British humour. I can not read the Feedback section without laughing aloud. I also respect New Scientist for daring to take political stances, and exposing bad governmental science policies, or even tackling the environmental movement if they stoop to using questionable science.

i have found that this magazine is ideal for the layman.even the most difficult subjects are dealt with such that i can follow them. the range covered is facinating. i look forward to each weeks edition and enjoy every one.it doesnot blind one with science rather it opens ones mind. cannot recommend highly enough. i would award 10 out of 5.

I enjoy reading New Scientist as it provides interesting and insightful information on scientific news and breakthroughs written by journalists who seem to know what they are doing. The magazine has a wide breadth of coverage which makes it possible for any scientist to find an area that is interesting and relevant to them.

This is a magazine with good, enlightening and well written articles on recent research that one can look forward to reading every week.

However, sometimes the magazine strays into irrelevant and arguably unscientific areas like politics which can offend some readers. Thankfully, this is not overdone and the reader should enjoy the various fascinating scientific articles that the magazine produces at a reasonable price.

Easyriders

EasyridersI like choppers and babes;but sleds are the main thing that makes you wonder which is the beauty and which is the beast! The rag falls short of being informational and useful. If the price was 5.00 per year maybe a good deal.Im glad I subcribed this time,to see how far down it has gone.ADIOS SUCKA!!!!

Easyriders is one of the most informative and entertaining magazines I have had the pleasure to read. H-D58s review is so distant from any reality that I am at a loss to understand his motives or his reasoning. First, there is absolutely no "kiddie-porn" in this magazine. I do not have the time, nor inclination, to diagnose why H-D58 would consider the exposed breasts of "Women" to be pornographic. But I for one find viewing the female form as a healthy and pleasurable experience.

Second, the "Easynews" and "Taking it Easy" sections of the magazine are so enlightening and enjoyable they are almost worth the price of the magazine on their own. Not to mention the exceptional journalism that permeates throughout, giving relevant and expert information covering all aspects motorcycles and motorcycling. The occasional "Women" that so graciously appear from time to time, only add a beautiful contrast to this highly respected and remarkable magazine.

I have read Easyrider Mags for years, being a seasoned biker I find Easyriders to be informative, has a varity of products and services. There articles are well written and the layouts of events are good.

This is a great magazine for anyone who is seriously into motorcycling and the "biker lifestyle". It covers many great articles showing and reviewing some of the best customs out there, not to mention they cover the standard factory bikes to, including classics. Oh yeah, and the babes aren't bad either!

Blitz : Martial Arts Magazine

Blitz : Martial Arts MagazineBlitz magazine hails from Australia and I'd have to say it's the best of it's kind in that market. Then again martial arts magazines isn't exactly a heavily populated genre in Australasia. A nice glossy production that is often eye catching and tends to follow a broad range of styles (heck, I'm sure they've even had a boxer on the cover at one point) the magazine is pretty much par for the course. We get interviews (with lots of name dropping) and reports of various tournaments around Australia (with lots of name dropping) and there are technique studies as well. The latter is perhaps the most timeless aspect of the product and it's good to see a good cross section of styles given an opportunity to shine in relation to specific self defence situations. Lastly there are of course a bunch of adverts which will be of limited use to international readers being as they are aimed at the Australasian market.

Keen martial artists will get quite a bit out of the technique workshop section and maybe some from the interviews but the tournament reports will only interest locals and the name dropping gets irksome after a while. Not an essential purchase though as a young pup I tended to think so...

Casaviva

CasavivaMagazine is fine but it didn't come for 6 months after ordering. Amazon blamed 3rd parties and wouldn't help. We will never order mags through Amazon.

Nothing against the magazine itself, but getting your hands on the first issue is a whole different story! First off it is late (in fact I still don't have my first issue) But that is not the worst part. The worst part is the post-purchase service you get from Amazon. First, people who answered the phone number provided in confirmation e-mail from Amazon, did not find/know anything about the confirmation number Amazon had e-mailed me. Well, guess what, that's all I have folks! unless you want me to make one up, I don't have any other confirmation numbers!

Insisting a bit more, frusterated the lady answering the phone and she told me that she did not work for Amazon and what do I want from her?!!

So, imagine this, the publication you paid for, never arrived, the confirmation number Amazon sent you does not exist and the phone number provided by Amazon says they don't work for Amazon?! That is what I call service!!

Ever since my summer trip to Italy, I have been gathering some Italian home magazines because I noticed that they feature more realistic homes than American magazines which often feature stately homes. I use Casa Viva to get design ideas and tips on high quality home items that I can sometimes buy online. And since I understand Italian, I can say that the articles are well-written too.
