Preschool Friends

Preschool FriendsI bought this as a gift for my granddaughter's 4th birthday! She started to receive it quicker than what was stated which was a big surprise as her birthday is just a week away! She loves it and will enjoy receiving it directly to her! She is familiar with all the carictors and they're all her favorites. She likes to color and the activities are fun for her and her mother to do together (maybe Grammy will be invited to join in sometimes *=))! This was a worth while purchase!

Tennis Magazine

Tennis MagazineThis is a very informative magazine, but probably more advanced the average player needs or would be able to put into action.

I love Tennis Magazine, but I seem to be having trouble with missed issues. I know they only put out 8 issues per year, but I renewed my subscription on Aug. 29th. It is now Sept. 30, and I still have not received the next issue. Surely one got skipped. That should mean an extra issue, since I paid for a year... we'll see.

Socialist Worker - England

Socialist Worker - England"Socialist Worker" will come as a shock to your system if you have ever read a corporate-owned daily newspaper. It certainly did for me in my early years as a student at the university of Melbourne.

Here, one sees clearly how so much government policy is directed at the simple aim of increasing profits for already extremely wealthy corporate executives, rather than to meeting the needs of the people who supposedly elect governments. Any reader with an open mind will become aware how governments are geared so strongly to ensuring there are no obstacles to increasing profits of the wealthy.

"Socialist Worker" also views this struggle of workers to achieve a genuinely democratic system in which the workers plan society to meet human need as totally international. Thus it understands that the USSR after Lenin, Vietnam, China, Cuba, North Korea and Yugoslavia were state capitalist countries that had nothing to do with socialism. Rather, they were/are ran on the same lines as the West, with the priorities being the enrichment of a tiny minority at the expense of the majority. This viewpoint is not easy to accept if you read something more moderate because they focus so much on the similar ideologies and the effects of a state-owned system found in Marx, but it still is worthwhile.

The major problem with this though-provoking and hard-edged newspaper is that it is so preachy as to be exaggerated and over-emotional, rather than being as rational as it argues a democratic socialist system to be. There is no effort to look at the actual lives of working people, which at least in Australia and Red America lead them to support extremely conservative viewpoints that have one similarity to "Socialist Worker": blaming media and academia for policies that do not serve the interest of the majority.

Nonetheless, "Socialist Worker" ought to make you reconsider if not change your perspective on politics forever with a few reads.

who ever wrote the editorial review must have gotten big bucks. I am a big big socialist, and have read the magizine, and think that the it is a load of crap!

Huskers Illustrated

Huskers IllustratedThe reason I only give this 4 stars, not 5, is because of the slow mailing process. Being Husker fans in NJ, Huskers Illustrated is a great way to stay in the loop. In the beginning of the season the magazines came pretty promptly, then a few weeks in we were always an issue behind. I wish there was a "faster delivery" option. I would pay more so my husband would have the most current issue in a timely manner.GO BIG RED!

Blitz : Martial Arts Magazine

Blitz : Martial Arts MagazineBlitz magazine hails from Australia and I'd have to say it's the best of it's kind in that market. Then again martial arts magazines isn't exactly a heavily populated genre in Australasia. A nice glossy production that is often eye catching and tends to follow a broad range of styles (heck, I'm sure they've even had a boxer on the cover at one point) the magazine is pretty much par for the course. We get interviews (with lots of name dropping) and reports of various tournaments around Australia (with lots of name dropping) and there are technique studies as well. The latter is perhaps the most timeless aspect of the product and it's good to see a good cross section of styles given an opportunity to shine in relation to specific self defence situations. Lastly there are of course a bunch of adverts which will be of limited use to international readers being as they are aimed at the Australasian market.

Keen martial artists will get quite a bit out of the technique workshop section and maybe some from the interviews but the tournament reports will only interest locals and the name dropping gets irksome after a while. Not an essential purchase though as a young pup I tended to think so...

Der Spiegel

Der SpiegelThere are a few good news magazines out there, the Spiegel is definitely one of them.

I teach German in the US and my older students read the Spiegel with a lot of enthusiasm. They are always astounded by the depths of the Spiegel's coverage when comparing it Time Magazine, Newsweek or others.

I absolutely do not share the opinion that the Spiegel covers only events related to Germany. The reports are critical, and compared to American media usually a bit left ( if you consider NPR coverage left as well).

For those who are fortunate enough to have a working knowledge of German, Der Spiegel presents an astonishingly informative magazine every week. Each issue has over 200 pages, with articles about politics, art, music, architecture, travel, technology, and just about anything else you might want in a weekly magazine. Imagine The Economist at thrice its size, with longer articles, and written in German: that is Der Spiegel.

When I was still learning the language, I found Spiegel rather difficult to understand. This is probably because it's not written for idiots. Still, I learned a lot of colloquial German from reading it. For those who are learning German, and those who speak it well, there is no better source of information than Der Spiegel.

I have been a reader of the Spiegel in Germany for several years. Since I moved to the US for graduate study I subscribe to a daily (free!) newsletter called "Der Tag". Instead of relying on polemic critics you might as well read some of the articles yourself to get an idea of the quality of the Spiegel.

By the way, I also love the Economist. In general, however, I think the neoclassical approach of the Economist differs significantly from the perceptively left-leaning, liberal Spiegel.

I have a subscription to Der Spiegel and the quality of the magazine is prima. Very high-level stuff in every magazine and covers a very broad variety of topics. I agree with the other reviewers that the magazine leans left, as the German population itself does. As a Republican myself, I sometimes find the political orientation of Der Spiegel to be somewhat annoying (its transparently biased view on Obama over McCain, for instance), but the magazine is an important source for left-leaning perspectives for me and has catapulted my German to the next level. Der Spiegel is not always biased, however, and many of its articles are supremely sophisticated and informative.

I've been reading "Der Spiegel" for over 30 years. To compare "Der Spiegel" to "Time", as it is today, is like comparing "Time" to a comic book. They are in a different league all together. The depth in the articles in "Der Spiegel" are way above other magazines. Some have said it has a "left" leaning. That is surprising because I always got the feeling than people in Germany think it leans "right". That's because in general the political spectrum is more to the "left" in Europe.

In any case, I must credit "Der Spiegel" with helping me learn German and making sure I keep my German knowledge current. Above all I must credit "Der Spiegel" with keeping me informed. If you are a teacher, a student or an expatriate it's a must have.

Embroidery

EmbroideryI saw this magazine advertised in a magazine along with several other magazines on sewing and embroidery, etc. As I live in a small town, I asked my son who lived in a large city to see if he could find any individual copies for me so I could see if they were the type of magazines I was interested. Embroidery magazine in particular didn't have much of a blurb with it to know what to expect. Well he bought me a subscription as a Mother's Day gift and as you can see it is a fairly pricey magazine. When I got my first issue from the UK I wanted to cry. Instead of projects, stitches to learn, etc. It was full of news stories and not even particularly about embroidery. It was more a needlecraft news magazine, sort of. It wasn't even about good news stories but more avant-garde type It was hard to really figure out what it was. I did find out that they published a sister magazine that I had seen called Stitches and I emailed the company asking if my subscription could be transferred to the other magazine or please refund the money back to my son as the Embroidery magazine was of no interest to me at all. I love sewing, quilting, embroidery magazines of all types, so say I didn't like one means to me it is pretty bad. My recommendation is find a copy to see first before paying the big bucks for the subscription. You may thank me later.

I don't usually write reviews but I must put in one for the defense of this title! While I understand the last reviewer's disappointment that this magazine does not include instructions, projects and patterns I want to offer my viewpoint on what I see as its merits. I am currently unable to subscribe to this journal at home because of budget restrictions but it is carried at my local art & design library and I've been reading it there. I hope to have a subscription at home eventually and I don't imagine I will ever toss the older issues out once I do! The price seems more reasonable once you consider that this title comes all the way from the UK and I think it will prove well worth the cost for anyone interested in historical textiles and/or contemporary textile art. The eloquent articles are illustrated with high-quality photographs that make it a pleasure both visually and textually. I ADORE this magazine for the way it weaves together past and present. The work included comes in a variety of styles but across the board I am always impressed with the craft of the maker and their unique use of needlework and embroidery skills. As an artist, a crafter and a generally curious person I have found every issue of this journal inspiring. Often I even return to re-read the back issues that the library has archived while I wait for the new issue to arrive. Please do not dismiss it before you have had a chance to hold an issue in your hands and investigate for yourself! Sample articles can be found on the guild's website at the address below. You can also view a table of contents for the current issue. However be warned the images do not appear as nice in the PDFs as they are in real life.

This is primarily a 'trade' publication, with news articles, along with art show evaluations, and product reviews on things pertaining to the art of sewing. If you're looking for embroidery patterns and ideas, this is not the magazine to offer those things... I was very disappointed when I received my first issue, I should have read the review/s... I won't be renewing my subscription.

Answers

AnswersAre you looking for a high-quality magazine with spectacular photographs? Answers Magazine provides insightful articles combined with professional photos and a section for kids. This is not your usual "thin" magazine. It is chock full of photos, posters, and articles and is well worth the price. An added bonus? Explore the world God created in a way no other periodical offers.

I am glad that we subscribe to this magazine. Our entire family enjoys it and learns from it. It is great to get a different perspective than the one forced upon public school children. As the magazine points out, evolutionists and creationists both use the same scientific facts. The difference is in how they interpret those facts. Evolutionists interpret the facts to reach a conclusion excluding the possibility of a Creator. Creationists look at the same facts and realize that there are other credible scientific possibilities other than evolution--and it is not difficult to look at the scientific facts and see how much they line up with the Bible. It is too bad that most of our children never learn that there are other scientific explanations for the fossils, Grand Canyon, dinosaurs, etc. It is amazing to see the pictures of Mt. St. Helens compared to the Grand Canyon, for example, seeing how similar they are. It is not a stretch at all to realize that the Grand Canyon along with its rock layers, fossils, etc., may easily have been formed by a sudden catastrophic flood. ANSWERS Magazine provides articles written by scientists about science. It also has a kids section. There are articles for those in all levels of science, from basic to advanced. I wish all would read this magazine and learn about our Creator.

Unfortunately, a lot of times, Christian magazines or media publications can't compete excellence-wise with similar items being put out in the mainstream, secular market. Answers magazine, however, is an exception to that rule. I hardly ever read our mail or the other magazines sent to our home, but every time we get our Answers magazine, it captures my attention and leaves me feeling inspired and like I didn't waste my time for sitting down to read through it. This is a very, very good product with very, very good information, which supports a thoroughly Biblical Worldview. If it isn't already being sent to your home, take out a subscription today!

Wow, I was just reading my first issue thinking how much information was packed into one issue. 14 main articles! And finally, a magazine that I can use as a great supplement for some of my children's school projects. It's not aimed at children (except the small children's section in the middle), but older elementary (and up) can certainly "get" some of these topics. It's nice knowing I can trust them not to have evolution lies in them! Thanks AiG!

Answers Magazine does a great job of presenting new scientific research as well as mainstream scientific theory and examining it for the facts instead of just pushing an agenda. While there are many articles challenging the presuppositions of those opposed to the Magazine's belief system, the editors also seem to be very careful not to twist science just to fit their school of thought. Beyond science, the Magazine examines biblical accuracy and offers logical explanations on how many historical events "could have happened" while still accepting that there are also many supernatural events which cannot be explained through science alone. Excellent work in each magazine. Readers will be challenged and encouraged. Oh, and the pictures are always great, too!

Positif

PositifOf course, the product description is not the right one. Positif is none other than the famous French film journal, the best in France because it is at once serious and inquisitive, refuses dogmas (which Les Cahiers du Cinéma unfortunately espouses, even though some of its articles are of great value) and allows space for the films it chooses to defend. The layout and the black-and-white pictures give it a distinctive, beautiful look. If you can read French and are interested in reading about film, do not hesitate and subscribe to this magazine. Month after month, it sheds light both on the current cinema and the history of film Positif is often noted for its roughly 25-to-30-page-long forays into a topic (recently Robert Altman, or a study about Mizoguchi, Ozu and Naruse). Positif can boast that Variety calls it "by far the best film journal in Europe". From what I can read here and there, I guess it is true.
