Animals & You

Animals & Youi ordered this and have not heard anything from the company or see any thing in the mail. Not to happy about it at the moment.

Can't boys care about animals as well? That seems kind of sexist/stereotyping to me. (I seriously doubt that Scotland Yard is going to investigate any parents letting their male offspring have access to this magazine, but still...)

Also in a previous issue where readers send in photos of their pets, I saw where a girl had sent in a photo of her pet marten, which is a cat-like relative of the weasel. The note accompanying the photo read something like: "This is my pet martin(sic)Squoodgy. Isn't he adorable?"

Umm, Okay. Maybe things are different in the UK regarding keeping martens as pets, but here in the States it requires big-time permission from wildlife officials and special licensing and all that.

And whether you need permission or not in the UK to keep a wild animal like a marten as a pet, he is still a wild animal. (The recent incident in Connecticut w/the chimpanzee viciously attacking his owner's friend can attest to that)

And one day "Squoodgy" (or whatever his name is) the Marten might take it upon his wild instincts to use his young mistress as something to sink his sharp little teeth into. Would he be so 'adorable' then?

Truck Trend (1-year auto-renewal)

Truck TrendI bought this title thinking it had nothing to do with cars and only trucks. Since it is a sister publication to Motor Trend, I should have known. I just received my first copy. It is full of crossover SUV's CUV's,etc. WHY? They try to justify it buy saying that these models have grown bigger and thus should be included? Come on, you ALREADY have a car mag to include them in. When I guy a truck mag, I buy it for truck content. My guess is that it is so thin with only truck stuff, that they have to pad it with car stuff just so they can sell it.

Because of the bi-monthly printing the "news" of this publication is hardly up to date. I have a suggestion; go monthly and get a better pulse on the market.

Buy Truck Trend (1-year auto-renewal) Now

You want a answer to a question about trucks? You'll learn so much every time you open the cover, you won't want to put it down. The pictures are awesome but the hard questions, answers and ideas will keep you coming back...........

Truck Trend offers many of the same advantages as Motor Trend, as these sister publications cover an enormous inventory of vehicles retailed here and abroad. This is a must have at $10/yr, and with Amazones relationships with many businesses and publishers, they offer a $5 GC on some great automobile monthlies. I have been a subsciber to both C & D, M. T, and now Truck Trend for in excess of 5-yrs, and the others, C & D, Motor Trend, etc for close to 12-yrs. They al have their specialty as to why I subscribe to each, together they really keep the auto enthusiast on the edge of their seat and in close contact with their banker/credit provider as the selection annually of auto's to purchase just keeps getting BETTER!

I wish they published this magazine every month even though I don't rate the magazine all that high.. The magazine has pretty heavy coverage on pickup trucks and skimpy coverage of crossovers and SUVs. In their latest issue they did a "best of" SUV review but didn't consider scores of popular SUV models in their ranking. For this they get two stars out of five.

Threads

ThreadsThis is a quality magazine with a knowledgable staff. I have never been disappointed with an issue--each one has helpful tips that are explained in detail with examples, good graphical representation, and procedures. A while ago my father-in-law asked me how sewing machines worked, how the threads could connect to work at all, and lo and behold, the next issue of "Threads" explained that very concept in an easy-to-understand way. I like how this magazine covers so many different topics. For example, recent issues covered such items as choosing the proper sewing machine needle for your project, how to use the different feet that come with sewing machines, how to make the perfect button hole, which hems for which garment/fabric type. Some sewing magazines just focus on the fads, spending so much time on one subject (like machine embriodery--which would be helpful if I had one!) that those of us relatively new to sewing don't get the real tips and tricks that any sewer needs to create a quality garment or other project. Recommended.

I used to dream about subscribing to Threads and drool over them in the library, but the new format beginning in Fall 2005 is disappointing. They have added many more articles of interest to very new sewers such as how to choose the correct needle for a fabric. This basic info is readily available in many basic sewing books and it is not why I renewed to Threads for another 3 years. This magazine once showed cutting edge techniques and lots of projects that intermediate and advanced sewers could savor. As a beginning sewer I used to dream about conquering the exciting projects in Threads. Now, they have watered it down to appeal to less skilled people at the expense of the projects and information that made it stand out from other sewing magazines. This is still a "good" magazine, but no longer excellent. I wish that I could get back my money for the next 3 years and spend it on fabric.

I have always enjoyed every issue of Threads in the past. The new format / contents does not appeal to me. Threads is now a beginner sewing magazine like many others on the market. Thread's was once a great magazine, the only one on the market for the intermediate and advanced sewers. The projects were wonderful and I and other's I know kept every single issue. Not now, there isn't really much in Thread's for the wearable art/advanced sewer. I will really miss the couture finishing techniqes and other articles with new ideas. These articles were much more detailed than any book. Because of this detail a sewer with some experience could use these articles to become an advanced sewer more quickly than buying many books. I only gave the 2 star's because it is a nice beginner magazine. If you are new to sewing this is a good magazine, but the more advanced sewer's should pass this one up.

I have been sewing for 30 years. I started when I was only eight years old. I thought I knew how to sew. I would see garments in shows and wonder how some people could do such a beautiful job. I finally found the answer! This magazine covers so many topics to really sharpen sewing skills and make projects have that extra special touch. The articals are interesting and the instuctions are clear. Even the ads are helpful to find the hard to get items. I would highly recomend this magazine to anyone that sews.

I simply love this magazine. Over the years as I have taken on a sewing project. The odd class play costume, pair of curtains or the shirt I wanted. This Magaizine has always had the best explainations of sewing instructions, plus pictures to go along.

I have enjoyed their insightful discussions of fabrics as well as all the latest "news" from the wide world of garment making. I apperciate that they are not devoted to making holiday crafts! The world does not need another set of fluff instructions.

I look foward to the beautiful back page of historical fabric as well every month.

Its the only magazine of which I have ever collected an entire set of back issues. These I consider a bit of a "Sewing Safty Net" They are worth their weight in gold.

Some day maybe I'll buy the issues binders.

Woodcarving

WoodcarvingIf you're new to carving & want to get some ideas on where to start, this may be the magazine for you. Most of the projects (usually one per magazine) are relatively simple w/ decent instructions, firmly set in the "objet d'art" category. Stuff that makes for interesting gifts that may collect dust on someone's shelves.

If you're looking for information or properties of various types of woods, try an encyclopedia instead ("Encyclopedia of Wood," ISBN: 0816021597 is a good place to start).

If you are looking for events or carving groups in your area, you might want to search online unless you live in the U.K., where this magazine is produced.

Give it a shot for a year. You'll probably pick up a tip or 2 and then move on to bigger things.

Der Spiegel

Der SpiegelThere are a few good news magazines out there, the Spiegel is definitely one of them.

I teach German in the US and my older students read the Spiegel with a lot of enthusiasm. They are always astounded by the depths of the Spiegel's coverage when comparing it Time Magazine, Newsweek or others.

I absolutely do not share the opinion that the Spiegel covers only events related to Germany. The reports are critical, and compared to American media usually a bit left ( if you consider NPR coverage left as well).

For those who are fortunate enough to have a working knowledge of German, Der Spiegel presents an astonishingly informative magazine every week. Each issue has over 200 pages, with articles about politics, art, music, architecture, travel, technology, and just about anything else you might want in a weekly magazine. Imagine The Economist at thrice its size, with longer articles, and written in German: that is Der Spiegel.

When I was still learning the language, I found Spiegel rather difficult to understand. This is probably because it's not written for idiots. Still, I learned a lot of colloquial German from reading it. For those who are learning German, and those who speak it well, there is no better source of information than Der Spiegel.

I have been a reader of the Spiegel in Germany for several years. Since I moved to the US for graduate study I subscribe to a daily (free!) newsletter called "Der Tag". Instead of relying on polemic critics you might as well read some of the articles yourself to get an idea of the quality of the Spiegel.

By the way, I also love the Economist. In general, however, I think the neoclassical approach of the Economist differs significantly from the perceptively left-leaning, liberal Spiegel.

I have a subscription to Der Spiegel and the quality of the magazine is prima. Very high-level stuff in every magazine and covers a very broad variety of topics. I agree with the other reviewers that the magazine leans left, as the German population itself does. As a Republican myself, I sometimes find the political orientation of Der Spiegel to be somewhat annoying (its transparently biased view on Obama over McCain, for instance), but the magazine is an important source for left-leaning perspectives for me and has catapulted my German to the next level. Der Spiegel is not always biased, however, and many of its articles are supremely sophisticated and informative.

I've been reading "Der Spiegel" for over 30 years. To compare "Der Spiegel" to "Time", as it is today, is like comparing "Time" to a comic book. They are in a different league all together. The depth in the articles in "Der Spiegel" are way above other magazines. Some have said it has a "left" leaning. That is surprising because I always got the feeling than people in Germany think it leans "right". That's because in general the political spectrum is more to the "left" in Europe.

In any case, I must credit "Der Spiegel" with helping me learn German and making sure I keep my German knowledge current. Above all I must credit "Der Spiegel" with keeping me informed. If you are a teacher, a student or an expatriate it's a must have.

Canadian House and Home

Canadian House and HomeThis magazine is great!! It appeals to all different types of decorators-modern, midcentury, traditional-thats why I like it. My mom and I can both enjoy it, and we have very different taste! I've been a subscriber for years.

I saw this magazine in a store, bought it and loved it. Since subscribing through Amazon, I've not been disappointed. I find more interesting decorating ideas in this publication than in any other. There is something for everyone, from contemporary to traditional to eclectic. I'm very happy with it and hope the editors don't change a thing.

Minnesota Monthly

Minnesota Monthly"Minnesota Monthly" is a very good magazine that focuses, obviously, on life in Minnesota. It has consistently well written and interesting articles on all different facets of Minnesota living, and every issue is worth reading. I am fond of the focus on recreational Minnesota; as an example in the August, 2005 issue there is an issue on Bed and Breakfasts in Minnesota (it has been an annual feature for fourteen years now). The article doesn't just stick close to the Twin Cities, either; it roams the entire state looking for excellent B&Bs. That is the type of feature that makes the magazine worthwhile: it gives readers great ideas of things to do and places to go that can quickly generate enthusiasm for new adventure.

I gave the magazine four stars overall, but I still recommend it highly to any resident of Minnesota. The reason for the one star deduction was simply that occasionally a few of the articles feel monotonous and repetitive on a month-to-month basis, though not overwhelmingly so. The magazine is a bargain, and has paid for itself many times over in ideas it has given me.
