Allure (1-year auto-renewal)

AllureAllure is a great idea that's poorly manifested. I love it in principle -a magazine devoted to beauty with a heavy focus on makeup. The content, however, is short on how-to and long on buy-this-product. Much of the makeup is expensive and exclusive, unavailable to the majority of the buying public. They're constantly raving over products that are quite frankly terrible, to the point where seeing Allure recommend something actually makes me less likely to try it. The fashion spreads are pointless and would be better left out, focusing on expensive items, unwearable trends, or flash-in-the-pan fads. The "Makeup Colors" technique is always frustrating, as the listed products never even resemble the actual look achieved. This problem is worsened by the fact that the colors of featured products rarely render true on the pages; I get sick of buying a cosmetic product only to find the color looks nothing like the way it looked on the page. It swings wildly between trends and recommendations with no apparent sense of coherence to it; its advice frequently contradicts itself from one month to the next. Finally, its focus on fluffy celebrity, name brand clothes, and rich-and-famous lifestyles (it's obsessed with recommending clothes and etiquette for red-carpet "parties" of the kind I can't begin to relate to) leads the average reader to develop a massive inferiority complex.

Skip this one and go for Lucky for versatile fashion advice, the most important makeup tips and trends, and a wider range of ages, hairstyles, and races on the models than the bland-beautiful-young-white-girl Allure favors.

Ever flip through a magazine, skip all the articles, and dive straight into the beauty section? I have. Good beauty advice is what I want most out of my magazines. Well, Allure is a magazine devoted to beauty.

It covers everything from makeup, clothing, skin care, to health and the ups and downs of plastic surgery.

There are special little features in every issue that totally devote themselves to one aspect of beauty. One month the article was devoted to how to pluck your eyebrows, and it covered everything from technique to good tweezers to what to do to reduce swelling. Another month it centered around sunglasses and recommended styles and shapes to suit your skin tone and shape of face. Another month it was devoted to eyeliners! What kind of liners do what, what brands are recommended, how to apply pencil, liquid, powder liners... wheee, it's pure heaven for any beauty fanatic.

I also love how they take the time to go over what type of makeup the featured celebrity is wearing on the cover. It bothers me when I see the featured celeb wearing a divine shade of cosmetics and not being able to find out what it is and where to get it.

There is beauty Q&A galore in Allure. Some of the most respected names in haircare, makeup, nails, skincare, etc., are regular contributers to Allure and answer questions sent in by readers.

There's also a makeover in every issue!

So renown is Allure's makeup savvy that if a brand of beauty product wins an Allure's viewer's choice award, they proudly display it on ads and packaging. The editors and reporters do a fine job of introducing and reviewing new products, something I love reading about.

Aside from beauty advice, they also produce some very serious articles regarding beauty. In one month's issue, Allure reported on the various forms of cosmetic procedures and produced before/after pictures of each featured procedure and reported the pros and cons along with reviewing the general effectiveness.

If you love beauty and haircare, get Allure!

What you'll find lacking from Allure are the political articles (like you'll find in Marie Claire) and the sex and relationship articles (like in Cosmo and Glamour). This is first and foremost a magazine devoted to beauty all the way through.

Buy Allure (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Each month I really look forward to getting my Allure issue.

The magazines focus is on beauty though you will also find some fashion pieces.

What I like most is the magazines unusual look at beauty. For example past issues have included a peek inside at the items in some bathroom cabinets belonging to well knowed women.

What strippers at Scores use to take care of their bodies. An article on the man who inspired the movie Shampoo.

And there are many traditional articles on beauty. Allure excells at being on the cutting edge of new technology that will make you even prettier. On these pages you will find out about botox, laser surgery, high tech hair and more.

Allure is refreshing in that it does not have a diet article every month. In fact several years ago Allure made a point to state that it did not want to offer up a diet of the month. But Allure does share tidbits of diet information like the latest on sweeteners or water weight. It will also occasionally run true life stories on dealing with the emotional side of eating problems. And recently has tracked two women and their weight loss efforts over several months.

Fashion articles are limited to a few pages and usually include pictorials on new trends, staking out the look of a star and the latest scoop on accessories.

Definately Allure is the magazine to buy to learn how to keep your look fresh and fun!

As a typical young female, I've read a lot of different magazines geared toward women. Most, in general, feature the same articles month after month, and therefore become repetitive and boring. Let's face it: there is only so much you can take reading about "The Best Bedroom Moves" issue after issue. Allure, however, never seems dull or filled with useless amounts of recycled information.

I began subscribing to the magazine at age 18 (I'm 23 now) and have never been disappointed. Allure has articles for every age, and I find relevant information for my life, body, and health, and then I am able to find information that will interest and benefit my 50+ year old mother. Perhaps that is part of the appeal of the magazine: any age group can enjoy it. Not many magazines can say that.

Unlike many other female-geared magazines, Allure offers more than just underwear pictures and "how to please your man" articles. Each issue, Allure has an entire section dedicated to new health science discoveries, such as new updates about skin cancer and sleep problems. The magazine seems genuinely about women, beauty, and health, whereas other magazines make some feminists role their eyes ("how to please your man," anyone?)

Like anything else, Allure has its downfalls. While I do appreciate the make-up, weightloss, and fashion tips, I still always feel that I can never quite live up to the expectation the magazine presents me. I'm a pretty girl in good physical health, and I stillat timesfeel inadequate when reading the many awesome articles of this magazine.

Overall, I recommend Allure highly to women of all ages, shapes, and sizes. It contains more than just the bubbly sextalk of most female magazines, and therefore you get more zest for your money.

I have been a very happy subscriber since I was 13.

Finding my first issue in 1994, in a recycling box in my building's laundry room was something I will never forget. I am still on that same subscription, 11 years later and I absolutely loved every issue.

This has beauty and fashion. No mindless pages of gossip and how to please your man manuals, this one is all pure beauty.

I can always read about the best salons, spas, new makeup products; ways to put your own shades in new combos on your face, how to have the best bubble bath ever or the glossiest hair, this magazine does it all.

I look forward every month to see what it will bring me.

I always hear my female friends asking me to teach them how to apply makeup since they like mine, and I cannot really you how many of those requests I got! I also get begged to go makeup and skincare shopping and I really think that how I shop, do makeup, hair and my overall physical appearance, I can thank Allure for putting some nice and pretty ideas in my head. I am not superficial where I focus so much on the makeup, I can read and think deep, yet this is one guilty pleasure that this magazine satisfied for me.

Playboy (1-year auto-renewal)

PlayboyThe magazine itself isn't bad, nothing ground breaking but can offer an interesting read at times. When I receive a product like this I expect the packaging to be subtle without PLAYBOY labeled everywhere. And for the most part it is. That was until about 7 months into my subscription when I started to receive renewal notices.

The first renewal request I received was titled "URGENT 3rd notice" with Playboy clearly written on it. Every couple weeks I receive a new one, including my most recent that came in a bright yellow envelope with "SUSPENSION ADVISORY" across the entire front of it and Playboy written up in the corner. I understand the intent is to attract attention to it, but I would at least hope they would carry the same considerations in packaging their magazine to the renewal requests.

I canceled with 4 months left on my subscription just to stop the renewal request spam. I won't be subscribing again.

The magazine offers interesting articles more often than many people imagine. Especially when it comes to science of sexuality, their choices of writers are good and fun.

On the other hand, the photos of young naked girls are repetitive and boring, how many blond girls with artificial lips and boobs can you enjoy looking at? They look all the same, and worst, so digitally "improved" they don't look human most of the time. Too much airbrush work made them look like a clone game character.

To me, the most interesting section in the magazine is the Q & A from the readers, there are so many questions about human behaviors, normal or not. I learned so much about ourselves and what's really going on in the modern America. The answers are most often very specific and helpful, wise and tongue-in cheek fun.

I've been a reader/subscriber for over 30 years, and still find the magazine exciting, interesting, and very enjoyable/pleasurable. Eventually just about anything of general interest will be covered, the stories and articles are great, and the women are as beautiful as ever. Hef may be getting older but his staff keeps everything cooking at a high temperature. The interview section is one my favorites, and of course, the question and advice sections. Another favorite is the "Sex and Cinema" photo spreads. I'm still waiting for my invitation to the mansion. I'm sure my wife and I would have a wonderful, memorable time.

The articles are well written and interesting most of the time. This is a pretty good magazine that happens to have beautiful (if only through the magic of airbrushing) nude woman on some of the pages. It's also cheaper then most other entertainment magazines. Win-win. Buy it.

Playboy has always been my favorite magazine. From trends to jokes, interviews to beautiful women, this magazine has it all. I only wish they would go back to 12 issues in a year rather than have occasional double issues as well as stop featuring heavily tattooed women in seemingly every issue. Regardless, I will continue to subscribe.

I've been leaving it out on the dining table when it arrives the last few months and found out my husband has taken up reading it during breakfast or lunch! Never bothered before. I have made several changes in my habits when they've indicated something either does or does not work.

Architectural Record

Architectural RecordI asked a friend of mine who is an architecture student to recommend a good magazine for me--a casual reader. He suggested Architectural Record (AR) immediately. I followed his lead and started buying AR from bookstores. After reading about one year, I got some opinions on the pros and cons of this magazine and would like to share them with prospective readers/subscribers. Please note that my evaluation is from a layperson's point of view. It might not work for professionals.

I think the goal of AR is to keep people updated about what's happening in the architectural communities around the world, to present the latest works, and to reveal some patterns or trends in today's design. Based on this mission, I think AR does a great job.

But if architecture is only your hobby, AR might be too much for you. At least we are not making a living with it and do not have to know everything about it. Chances are that only a small part of the content in each issue might interest you. Nevertheless, as what I mentioned, AR is a good and serious architecture journal. So the key question is not whether to read it or not, but how to read it wisely or read which issue(s).

Fortunately, several clues can provide us with good suggestions. Each issue of AR has a special section called "Building Type Study" which focuses on one type of building (such as library, museum, bridge, office building, etc.). You can choose the right issues by skimming through the this section. Moreover, each year AR has a special issue called "Record Houses" featuring about 10 residental projects carefully selected around the world. If you are into residential architecture, you don't want to miss them.

Unless you are a hardcore architecture fan and would like to know all about it, amateurs like me can choose the right issues to read and get the information I need. I think this is the right or smart strategy to take advantage of this quality magazine.

That being said, I am not quite comfortable about the large volume of advertisements in the magazine (though I know it might be necessary).

I love the magazine... but unfortunately had to cancel my subscription because Synapse Inc. (the company that is shipping arch-record through amazon) is incompetent. The magazine arrived badly damaged (they don't wrap it in plastic when they ship it); to be honest, the injuries to the magazine looked so bad that I suspect it was shipped that way. I was incredibly disappointed and tried to contact Synapse to ask for a new magazine... the only problem is that you can not talk to a live person at Synapse. They have an automated customer service hot line with cleverly-worded questions that make it impossible to get satisfaction. Their website offers no other emails or phone number to contact for help. There is not even an option to cancel your subscription! Thankfully Amazon is very helpful and canceled for me. All in all I would say that Architectural Record is a great magazine and a must-have, just DO NOT order it through Synapse Inc.!!

Buy Architectural Record Now

Order the magazine directly from publisher if you want to get it... I'm in my second attempt via Amazon's magazine dept to find out where the magazine is. Ordered in December and should have received it at latest on Feb 6. Today is Mar 22.

Just got off the phone with synapse mag svc, they're going to have someone call me in 3-5 business days to complete a "customer service action form". Them I'm sure there'll be another several days wait for them to find out they screwed up, fix the problem and tell me I'll get my magazine in 6-8 weeks.

If I ever get the magazine, maybe I'll review it here next time.

This magazine is great for industry professionals. If you are looking for more decorating type magazines, I recommend Architectural Digest, Veranda, etc. Architectural Record is more technical based and offers industry related information such as elevations and floor plans. In that respect, if you are a student of Architecture or Interior Design, get this magazine because you will be introduced to things you just cannot get in school or in other non-industry magazines. It is wise to add this magazine to your list of subscriptions.

Want Architectural Record Discount?

Unlike some of the previous buyers I have a very positive experience. The first issue arrived within 30 days after the purchase, faster than most other venues for magazines.

I have always been a big fan of McGraw Hill as a publisher. AR is simply another gem.

Performance Bikes

Performance Bikesif you ask me, theres no better motorcycle magazine being published today that is as good as PB. great pictures, easy to read, and its a book that is geared towards regular people. they do reviews on the newest bikes, but more often than not theyre showing bikes that are a bit older and modified by their owners. and also more often than not these bikes are tricker than the brand new ones on the showroom floors. the guys that write this mag also seem to have a sense of humour and that comes through in their writing.

being as this magazine is based out of the U.K., ill be honest and say i was rather sceptical about subscribing to it. i used to get it at the local bookstores but one of them closed (borders) and the barnes/noble quit selling it. its my favorite magazine so i figured if i didnt try id never know.

i bought the year sub and sat back and waited....and everything worked out well.

ive since received 2 issues of PB straight from England. they ship them wrapped in plastic so both of them are in great shape.

if you like this mag and cant find it...bite the bullet and get it. it cost a bunch but to me its worth it.

.

Great Britain publishes the world's best English language bike magazines, and Performance Bikes is my favorite. Always plenty of full color pictures of bikes. They don't skimp like American mags, trying to sell a year's subscription for 12 bucks. The only negative is how high the price has become. $150 a year! Too high. Ten years ago I was paying $55 a year. But they have great comparos on bikes, helmets, security gear, etc. Plus articles you just won't see in American magazines. Tagging along with a gang of guys who bait bike thieves by parking a bike in a high visibility area and then beating the crap out of thieves who try to steal it. Don't look for Harleys and choppers in this mag. Sportbikes and nothing but sportbikes.

Buy Performance Bikes Now

by far the best mag for sportbikes. no slow heavy stuff here, just fast hooligan fun!

Hockey News Yearbook

Hockey News YearbookI get this yearbook every year, and buy the magazine whenever possible.

Quite simply The Hockey News is the most comprehensive, analytical periodical/publication concerning hockey.

It keeps readers informed of late season trades and free agent signings, gives detailed team reports, including providing depth charts. If you are a closet statiscian this magazine is also for you with last season's stats and projected stats.

Overall a must read(subscription) for inquisitive hockey fans of all ages.

I first looked @ this magazine and thought it was just going to be a boring magazine with nothing interesting to read. Boy was I wrong. It is full of stats and pictures. So for this i give the hockey news 5 stars

Teachers Helper - Grade 1 ed

Teachers Helper - Grade 1 edA teacher at the primary level is inundated with wonderful teaching material. Many times, however, a teacher in the primary classroom needs a quick activity that needs very little prep time. Teacher's Helper serves this purpose wonderfully! An excellent source when preparing for a substitute. I have found every issue to be filled with seasonal projects and skill review pages that are specifically designed for my grade level. I was first introduced to Teacher's Helper as a beginning teacher. It was a wonderful reference tool as I struggled to prepare lessons that were age and grade appropriate. As I gained teaching experience, I found Teacher's Helper to be an excellent source for skill reinforcement. I would highly recommend Teacher's Helper magazine.

I have been a fan of Teacher's Helper for years. (17 to be exact!) If I had to give up all but one of my teacher subscriptions, this is the one I would keep. This magazine has just what I need to reinforce and reteach skills. The editors are right on target with the skill set. Each new issue is filled with material I need and can use immediately. Very high quality product!
