News Photographer

Not always happy, not often happy, this takes you inside news photography. This is the journal of NPPA. Some of the stories are feel good, some are gut wrenching sad bloated Jonestown bodies. Great member services, slight PC...stuff. Weegee would have used this publication as a tool and evidence of brotherhood among those who do news photography. PDN is a similar publication for a slightly different emphasis. Suggest you join NPPA ( magazine comes with membership ) and subscribe to PDN. PDN and News Photographer are the real thing.

LIGUORIAN is a magazine published monthly. It contains a variety of articles on doctrine, scripture, social issues, as well as some jokes at the end and editorials. On the whole I enjoy LIGUORIAN, but would appreciate a more pro-active stance by ALL its writers defending abjectly with no equivocation, ALL of the teachings of the Church without exception.

Nutrition Action Health Letter - Us ed

I have a subscription to this mag. for the last 10 years( I'm now 33). I have moved several times and after a month or two they will start to catch up. On the inside cover is info on contacting them.

I love it because they have no ads in it and they are very very honest about all information on nutrition, additives, diet books, heart healthy, etc.. For example, They don't have Pepsi in 2/3's of the mag. so they can't say anything bad about diet soda in fear of having the sponsor pull out. The tell it ALL like it is. This is not a magazine if your looking for information like you get in Woman's Day, or one of those ad. packed magazines with one more way to loose 50 pounds over night while you sleep. It has really helped me to make wise choices for my family on what are the best kinds of foods to eat. The more we know, the better our choices will be for our families and ourselves.

According to my economic ability to do so, I have subscribed to this magazine since 1974 without any problems. Over the years, it has influenced me and my family to eat more vegetables and to be leery of the advertising on food packaging. I have learned to read ingredient labels and enjoy the latest scientific information about food without the usual bombardment of advertising, as this magazine doesn't accept advertising. What you get is approximately sixteen pages of articles and news items. It includes such things as recipes for making healthier sandwiches, which frozen foods are healthier among certain brands, specific brands to avoid based on lack of healthy ingredients, and occasionally recipes. Some months the main article is totally engrossing; sometimes it is less interesting, but the interesting articles make subscribing worthwhile.

I have never been compelled to review anything on Amazon until now. I've subscribed to this newsletter for almost a year, and in that time I've changed significant life choices (watching my salt intake, dropping some prepared food brands from my purchases) due completely and only to the information I read in this newsletter.

It takes very little time to go through the articles and find the one(s) that'll hit you that month. The newsletter is very thin, infrequent, and 100% worth the money. Isn't your health worth a few bucks a year?

As a physician this is my most highly recommended periodical on nutrition. Its also the most completely read and newsletter received by my entire family. What is better than factual ad-free nutrition information, a rarity indeed!

I have only received one issue, but it is extremely informative. I am a health food information junkie, and there's info in here that I haven't read about anywhere else. I had no problem getting it on time. I signed up at the beginning of December and received my first issue mid-January. The newsletter comes monthly except for there's no February issue and no August issue. That might be why some people aren't getting theirs for a while. I think it depends on when you sign up.

Portland Monthly

I agree with the other reviewer there certainly are a lot of ads. Nevertheless, as a long time Portlander, I always enjoy sitting down and perusing the mag from cover to cover each month. It's *not* a hard hitting news source, nor is it usually very in depth. It's not intended to be. It is a slick, glossy overview of the best of what the city has to offer (including the ads). I've had two separate gift subscriptions, and am planning on renewing for myself when this year is up.

I received one issue so far. I love reading about all the local things about Portland. I look forward to the rest of them.

I know all magazines have lots of ads, but Portland Monthly takes it to a whole new level. At least 75% of the magazine is ads, probably more. The remaining pages are usually uninteresting and poorly written. Once in a great while they will have something moderately interesting, but I can spend 5 minutes on the internet and find more interesting content. Needless to say, I won't be renewing my subscription. I wouldn't even read the magazine if they sent it to me for free.

Out of Portland pride, I subscribed to this magazine for over a year and it has put out some decent issues. But see it for what it is: great aesthetics and okay content. 75% ads? Try 80%+ in some issues, mainly real estate which would be helpful to the serial RE investor or out-of-towner but it's too much for the local. (Not to mention Bend is the only clear winner for RE investments in Oregon). The editorial information can be better acquired elsewhere--and more accurately too. I'm a great lover and 15-year resident of Portland and this magazine seems to be "selling" more of a flashy Beaverton-esque image than Portland. I keep telling my visitors Portland is better than it's portrayed here and not as superficial. PM is known for having won numerous awards . . . for layout and design which I do give credit. This is good if you intend to advertise with them. However, when I get Portland Monthly issues in the mail, they go to straight to my roommate who likes the pictures. It's probably difficult to pull off style and substance these days in the extremely competitive and dwindling print media industry. They get a star for trying.

Hockey News Yearbook

I get this yearbook every year, and buy the magazine whenever possible.

Quite simply The Hockey News is the most comprehensive, analytical periodical/publication concerning hockey.

It keeps readers informed of late season trades and free agent signings, gives detailed team reports, including providing depth charts. If you are a closet statiscian this magazine is also for you with last season's stats and projected stats.

Overall a must read(subscription) for inquisitive hockey fans of all ages.

I first looked @ this magazine and thought it was just going to be a boring magazine with nothing interesting to read. Boy was I wrong. It is full of stats and pictures. So for this i give the hockey news 5 stars

I purchased the magizine accadently thinking it was a fantasy hockey magizine but i was blown away by the magizine. it had so much information on the avalanche (my favorite team) and all the other teams, great stories and other stuff. the pictures ar 10+ quality. If hockey news had a dayly subscription for $10000 a year.. i'd definately buy it

Orthodox Word

If you order via Amazon you are getting convenience, but that said the Monks are slow adding you to the list. There are no advertisements in the small bimonthly about 45 pages and you get them months after the original publication date. Still this is made by people who are living the faith, and for a small price, you get a glimpse into it. I enjoy every issue and think if someone is interested in the Orthodox faith this is a good place to start. If you get it now, it will show up on your door around Pascha. Merry Christmas. /TKL

Landscape Architecture

This is a fine magazine with varied and interesting stories in every issue. A little America-centric and a tad heavy on the advertising. Difficult to find second hand as it is a great reference for professionals as well as inspiring for hobbists.

Tar River Poetry

TRP is one of the few journals that contains only poetry or reviews of poetry books. They are in their 25th year. TRP is a great poetry journal--it's one of my favorites. Makuck consistently publishes quality poems by quality poets, both the established and the newcomer. I highly recommend that any lover of poetry subscribe to this journal.
