Christian Research Journal

Christian Research JournalHave subscribed to CRI journal previously for many years and when I lived overseas, but had to give it up when the organization became too difficult to deal with to get the subscription changed back to the US. But, wanted to give it another try.

Generally I like the content of the articles, some are quite inapplicable to me. Unfortunately, it looks to me like the articles have gotten smaller over the years, but same level of quality and attention to detail seems to be there.

My main objection is that when I subscribed to the magazine I didn't realize I was signing up for fundraising letters. I support the organization, but hate to see them waste money on fundraising mail that's not going to get responded to. Why they don't just put it in their magazine and let the reader decide to donate above and beyond as they see fit I don't know.

I just ordered a 2-year subscription, and I can't wait to get my first copy. I have been very interested in the ideas of this Journal for years, but I am only now subscribing. It is expensive, but the original research and contents of the Journal promise to make up the difference. It's basically a scholarly journal but presented in a nice magazine format and written to the college educated reader without assuming they have their PhD in Philosophy or Theology. I look forward to getting my first copy.

It's a GREAT magazine but the price is outrageous now! I think they know they have a good product and have gotten a little too proud of it.

I ordered this for my son-in-law for Christmas. When I ordered it I got a reply that it would be 14-16 wks. before he would receive. But to my surprise when I gave him the card telling him of his gift, he had already received the first copy. He is very pleased with the magazine.

Journal of International Security Affairs

Journal of International Security AffairsA friend of mine lent me a copy of The Journal of International Security Affairs after a cover story comparing post-World War II Germany with (what is likely to be) post-Saddam Iraq caught my eye. I found the articles within to be uniformly well-written by a broad spectrum of authors (academics, policymakers, military officials, etc) from both the U.S. and abroad (India, Russia, etc).

Published by a Washington-based organization named JINSA, the tone was fair and balanced, with topics ranging from today's front-page news to tomorrow's. Notably, in an earlier issue I thumbed through, Natan Sharanksy authored an article about the Mid-East peace process. It's definitely worth a good look.

This journal got off to a great start in the summer of 2001 with its inaugural issue that included an article by Natan Sharansky called "From Helsinki to Oslo." In issue #4, at the start of 2003, it saw that American troops would roll into Baghdad, but that it would be very difficult to "win the peace." We'd been successful in doing just that in Germany in 1945, but this journal pointed out that doing it in Iraq would be extraordinarily difficult. And the journal has discussed many of the problems with the UN.

What can we expect in the future? More insights. Right now, Abu Mazen has just been elected to take over from the recently deceased Yasser Arafat. And some folks think that Abu Mazen can do what Arafat failed to do, namely make peace. But those who look at the JINSA website will see that they feel that Abu Mazen neither can make peace nor wishes to.

I like to read journals that see things as they are, not as some folks wish they were. And I recommend this one.

Buy Journal of International Security Affairs Now

I found this JINSA published journal on campus a few weeks ago and am happy I did. It appears as a decent, bi-partisan foreign policy journal. Though the number of pages and articles could be expanded and increased for sure. Highly recommended to the students of foreign and public policy. Great read!

Portland Monthly

Portland MonthlyI agree with the other reviewer there certainly are a lot of ads. Nevertheless, as a long time Portlander, I always enjoy sitting down and perusing the mag from cover to cover each month. It's *not* a hard hitting news source, nor is it usually very in depth. It's not intended to be. It is a slick, glossy overview of the best of what the city has to offer (including the ads). I've had two separate gift subscriptions, and am planning on renewing for myself when this year is up.

I received one issue so far. I love reading about all the local things about Portland. I look forward to the rest of them.

Buy Portland Monthly Now

Portland Monthly is meant to fun, pretty and bright. It is not the Economist. If your idea of a monthly is all substance and no style, subscribe to a "journal."

Read Best Reviews of Portland Monthly Here

I know all magazines have lots of ads, but Portland Monthly takes it to a whole new level. At least 75% of the magazine is ads, probably more. The remaining pages are usually uninteresting and poorly written. Once in a great while they will have something moderately interesting, but I can spend 5 minutes on the internet and find more interesting content. Needless to say, I won't be renewing my subscription. I wouldn't even read the magazine if they sent it to me for free.

Want Portland Monthly Discount?

Out of Portland pride, I subscribed to this magazine for over a year and it has put out some decent issues. But see it for what it is: great aesthetics and okay content. 75% ads? Try 80%+ in some issues, mainly real estate which would be helpful to the serial RE investor or out-of-towner but it's too much for the local. (Not to mention Bend is the only clear winner for RE investments in Oregon). The editorial information can be better acquired elsewhere--and more accurately too. I'm a great lover and 15-year resident of Portland and this magazine seems to be "selling" more of a flashy Beaverton-esque image than Portland. I keep telling my visitors Portland is better than it's portrayed here and not as superficial. PM is known for having won numerous awards . . . for layout and design which I do give credit. This is good if you intend to advertise with them. However, when I get Portland Monthly issues in the mail, they go to straight to my roommate who likes the pictures. It's probably difficult to pull off style and substance these days in the extremely competitive and dwindling print media industry. They get a star for trying.

Touchstone : a Journal of Mere Christianity

Touchstone : a Journal of Mere ChristianityTouchstone is one of the better magazines/journals to discuss and debate the meaning of the mind and heart in the contemporary world by standing on the shoulders of those who have struggled with this perennial question in the past. The editors, numerous in number, are Orthodox, Roman, and Protestant Christians who take seriously the creeds and scriptures of the Church. In other words, they realize that Tradition is the glue that holds the Church together, and by extension, sanitizes and sanctifies culture.

First Things is also an excellent journal that you will want to check out as well. Enjoy!

Touchstone features articles, editorials, book reviews and other material from the perspective of Protestant (both mainline and evangelical), Catholic and Orthodox Christians who hold to traditional, orthodox understandings of Christian morality. It tackles the tough issues of our time both in scholarly articles and practical advice for parents who must raise children to be faithful in a post-Christian culture. While it does not seek a false ecumenicalism which demands unity at all cost (see the July/August 2003 issue on "Christian Unity & the Divisions we must Sustain"), it also recognizes that orthodox believers of all three major branches of Christianity must work together on moral issues on which we all agree.

The publisher, the St. James Fellowship, also produces an excellent devotional guide: The St. James Daily Devotional Guide for the Christian Year, available by subscription though .

Buy Touchstone : a Journal of Mere Christianity Now

This is a conservative magazine from the perspective of protestism, catholicism, and eastern orthodoxy. The perspective is based on the Bible and Early Church Councils. This is a good magazine, I recommend it.

Read Best Reviews of Touchstone : a Journal of Mere Christianity Here

More erudite and orthodox than Christianity Today, but not as impenetrably cerebral as First Things. I have subscribed to numerous Christian-themed publications over the year, and Touchstone is my favorite to date. It covers topics in literature, religion, science, art, music, politics, and culture from an orthodox Christian point of view. The writing is more "poetic" (for lack of a better word) than that I usually encounter in Christian magazines, without, at the same time, lacking substance. The articles are intelligent and interesting, and this is one of the few magazines I usually find myself reading in its entirety.

Want Touchstone : a Journal of Mere Christianity Discount?

This publication is inspiring and yet rational. It is one of the greatest purchases I have ever made. It addresses different issues; both complex and simple, with an air of humility, while marinating a marvelously high level of academic prowess; this humble approach is something which I find most "rational academics" completely lack.

This magazine, to which I have been a subscriber for only a year, has been one of the most influential factors to my understanding and appreciating Christ's Universal Church.

I strongly recommend this to anyone who finds grace through reason; as well as anyone who is struggling to believe, but just can't seem to understand why the Church is so divided on so many things. Touchstone units the Church as C.S. Lewis did 60 years ago with plain, simple, mere Christianity.

Foxtalk

FoxtalkThis is a terrific information source for anyone serious about Visual Foxpro development. I reckon I know VFP pretty well, but I still learn something new from every issue of this excellent journal.

Don't be put off by its diminutive size. Although most issues run to only 20 24 pages, they are packed full of useful information. They are almost completely free of advertising, marketing fluff and editorial waffle. Each month you get four to six solid articles, focusing on essential programming issues. Subscribers can also obtain free source code downloads.

Recent features which I have found particularly valuable include:

A fascinating series by Predrag Bosnic on unusual user interface devices (combo trees, multi-line tooltips and the like).

Some excellent articles by Doug Hennig, dealing with data classes and the CursorAdapter class.

Useful insights into integrating VFP with Microsoft Outlook.

And my favorite: the Kit Box column, full of easily-digestible tips and techniques.

Even if only one article per issue was useful to you, a FoxTalk subscription would pay for itself many times over.

Fly Tyer (1-year auto-renewal)

Fly TyerI have been subscribing to this mag. for years. There is always at least one article that will teach you something you didn't know before. Photos are alway crisp and clear. Keeps you primed for Spring fishing during the cold winter.

I've been a subscriber for 5 years and the magazine has been a great assistance to my growth as a fly tier.

The magazine has published a long series by John Betts on the history and methodology behind the sport. It has covered the "ultra realistic" school and (for me) every issue has at least 3-5 new flies or techniques (out of an average of 12-15 flies featured in each edition).

It is a quarterly and each of the four issues are much enjoyed by this reviewer.

Vegetarian Journal

Vegetarian JournalForget about Vegetarian Times. Vegetarian Journal is a great magazine with probably the most comprehensive nutritional information available for vegetarians and vegans. They also delve into such issues as which "mainstream" restaurants serve vegan friendly and vegetarian friendly entrees and why gelatin is not vegetarian. The focus is mainly on food and nutrition and not so much on animal rights, but it doesn't matter. Each issue is chock full of insight and information. Highly recommended reading.

I had high hopes for this magazine, given that it is so much higher priced than other cooking and vegetarian magazines. For $5 per issue, I was expecting an extremely thick magazine with great articles and recipies that are more than something I could find online at foodnetwork.com. However, the magazine that arrived was a mere 35 pages long!!! Moreover, the articles were scarce and were not even interesting enough to read (one about how to mash potatoes properly, one about vegetarian teens who won scholarships for college, and one about a vegan radio show? I mean, come on!) So now about the recipies... they are grouped by theme, for example there are 6 recipies on paninis, 8 "baby boomer" recipies, and 5 Guatemalan recipies in the magazine I recieved. #1, five dollars is too much to pay for 19 recipies. #2, what vegetarian needs SIX panini recipies??? (Some of which are almost insultingI mean, do we really need a recipie for a peanut butter and banana panini with chocolate?) While my review may seem overly critical, the bottom line is price for me. If I paid only $1 per issue, I would likely give the mag 3 or 4 stars and continue my subscription. However, at $5 a pop, I will take my money elsewhere and invest it in another magazine, or in some vegetarian cookbooks. My advice is don't waste your money on this magazine!

Auto Restorer (1-year auto-renewal)

Auto RestorerIf you restore cars as a hobby, this is the publication for you. The tech is great and many web sites for hard to find parts are mentioned.

Hands down, this is the best publication I've seen for those of us who get our hands dirty and do most of our own work. I can't count the number of times I've referred to my "archive" of back issues to get information I needed to bail me out of a fix. If you like doing your own work, then this is the publication you want to have in your shop. You should consider this publication as mandatory reading.

If you are looking for a very well written, friendly car or truck restoration magazine, this is a very good choice. What I found was that the writers are down to earth, experienced and good communicators. This is a good choice for beginners and advanced restorers. The articles are useful and educational and no nonsense. With 30 years playing with cars I found this magazine only recently, after a 1 year renewal I decided to renew for 2 more years. You will have fun with this magazine.

This "magazine" just came and what a disappointment. It is 32 pages, on some sort of newsprint? type paper with the look of some newsletter done on a home printer circa 1995, like individual pages printed out and hand stapled together, bad. Seriously, this is exactly like some church newsletter. I had never heard of this periodical and ordered based on the good reviews here. The content is a joke, you could glean. see, and read, more from five seconds googling.

All I can say is either the great reviews are all from the publisher or someone got this for a WHOLE lot less than I paid. I would say about .50 an issue would be too much.

I purchased this magazine for my nephew whose first car was a Barracuda that he and his father restored. Dad is good at this sort of thing, and Nephew watched, helped, read, and now drives the car he found in a barnyard. Neither will do this work for a living (My nephew is a sophomore at Rolla Science and Technology), but he has enjoyed the articles and learned a little during these two years. I'll probably continue this subscription until his interests move on or one of us does.

Experience Life (1-year auto-renewal)

Experience LifeI started receiving this magazine after Organic Style folded, and I barely skimmed the first couple of issues, as I had no idea what kind of magazine it was or why I had started receiving it. Well once I actually read an issue all the way through, I was very pleasantly surprised. There are very well researched articles on healthy living, exercise, and mind-body fitness. There are book and new product reviews that are always interesting. The articles are positive and motivating, and the profiles of the person on the cover are nicely written as well. It's not the same old, same old from some of the more established fitness magazines like Shape, Self etc.

As my subscription is due to end this month and I came here to renew, I noticed the poor review due to the customer service of the fulfillment center. If I hadn't started receiving this magazine in similar circumstances, I never would have known about it, and I would not have the improved health and fitness habits I have today as a result.

It's impressive to me that the magazine chose to respond personally to the negative reviewer here as well.

Dear disappointed reader, please accept our sincere apologies. Our entire magazine team was distressed to learn about the frustrating experience you had trying to obtain a refund for your subscription to Experience Life, and we're so sorry it took this long to resolve.

Because these transactions are handled through a third-party fulfillment house, our magazine staff only just became aware of the problem this week (11/27/06). We've already taken steps to see that your money is refunded and the matter is resolved to your satisfaction. By now someone from our circulation staff should have been in contact with you directly. If not, please contact me at the phone number or email below, and I'll handle the matter personally.

After reading your post, we did some research and discovered that you received Experience Life as part of a contracted arrangement to fulfill the remainder of your Organic Style subscription after that magazine ceased publication. While your request to opt out of that fulfillment arrangement did come in after the official cancellation and refund deadline, you should never have received the treatment you did.

We've taken the matter up with our third-party fulfillment house and have expressed our dissatisfaction with this customer service representative's behavior. Actions have been taken to safeguard against situations like this from occurring in the future.

Again, we deeply regret that you were subjected to anything less than courteous and prompt treatment from our service providers. Please let us know if there's anything else we can do to put the situation right.

Warm regards,

Christy Rice

As a fitness professional and healthy lifestyle coach, I continue to be impressed by the quality, depth and perspective of Experience Life magazine. The focus isn't just on how to get fit, lose weight and look better, which is refreshing. It is on how to have a healthier mindset and a healthier body. They offer practical ideas for being active (not just doing workouts), getting outdoors, eating healthier without dieting, overcoming the challenges to staying motivated, and addressing the underlying beliefs and emotions that get in the way of success.

Becoming fit and healthy is less about following a prescribed set of guidelines and more about understanding what jazzes and motivates you and what holds you back, and Experience Life gets this. They do an excellent job of looking at all facets of wellbeing, which in turn creates a broader and more thoughtful perspective of what it means to live a happy and healthy lifestyle. I highly recommend this magazine if you want to feel your best.

Read Best Reviews of Experience Life (1-year auto-renewal) Here

Overall, I think that Experience Life is much better than most health magazines. They avoid stupid claims, such as "get a bikini body in 5 days," which is quite refreshing. I also like their healthy approach to nutrition, which focuses on eating healthy and nutritiously as opposed to "dieting." My only complaint about the magazine is that in the past, they have centered certain issues around a particular topic; for example, there have been issues centered around being healthy as you age or being active as a family and with your kids. In some ways, this is a positive thing and the magazine is attempting to be inclusive. However, being in my mid-twenties and not having (or planning on ever having) children, I barely read these particular issues. I don't mind one or two articles of the magazine being devoted to particular topics, but having the entire issue centered around something that isn't relevant to me is sometimes frustrating. However, overall, I was quite pleased with this magazine and I think it promotes a much more positive image of health than other magazines, particularly those "health" magazines aimed at women, such as Shape.

Want Experience Life (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

No exaggeration, this is the greatest magazine I've ever read. I have had this subscription since 2004 and I have enjoyed every single issue. The articles are well-researched and I like how they list all of their sources. Other magazines such as Shape, Self, and Fitness seem to only care about losing weight, but Experience Life focuses on being healthy in general. I also like how Experience Life doesn't contain ads about unsafe magic diet pills like all of the other "health" magazines seem to do. I highly recommend this magazine to anyone interested in living a healthy lifestyle. As a 23 year old woman, the articles in magazine have inspired me to stop eating crap and being a couch potato like most late-teens/college students do, and start living my life in a healthful way so I can live to be 123! I have bought this subscription for others as gifts and each of them have loved it as much as I do.

Model Railroader

Model RailroaderThe largest circulation standard for American model railroaders. Broad coverage of products, techniques, and existing model railroads. Excellent for those just entering or considering the hobby.

I've just finished the 75th anniversary issue of Model Railroader. Another excellent issue. Model Railroader is the once and still leader in the model railroading journalism field. There are other magazines which cater to a particular niche in this already small interest area that may do a better job in their specialized areas of interest but for the best overall coverage, for leadership, for vision, for service to model railroading Model Railroader stands alone.

Model Railroader offers the best photos, well-written articles, leading edge ideas and techniques. And they do this all for about the same price as the other magazines in the field.

Buy Model Railroader Now

Model Railroader has been criticized for years for 'light' model railroading, concentrating on new modelers instead of appealing to the old pros. I really think they are doing what they need to do to appeal to the most modelers possible. They have articles on scratch building or kitbashing nearly every issue, great articles on many different topics applicable to most modelers and of course they do the full color 'layout tour' better than anyone!

The other magazines of course are excellent in their own ways but if you are new to the hobby or like step by step projects with lots of photos and illustrations or like to look at the great photography of model railroads this is the place to go. It is truly astounding how many great model railroads there have been in this magazine over the years.

My only criticisms are nearly exclusive HO scale coverage, which is understandable but still frustrating (I am an O scaler myself), and the demise of the old 'dollar model' or other inexpensive modeling techniques.
