Mountain Bike Action

Mountain Bike ActionI'm not sure why this magazine is so highly rated. Sure it's an O.K. magazine, if you like immersing yourself in hype, marketing-speak and incredibly superficial language. Admittedly the pictures are pretty and as an obsessed mountain biker i can say we like bike porn. I just cannot read any of the articles. Chock full of over-the-top adjectives and 'xtreme' language. I don't trust a magazine that calls every new incremental advancement in biking technology 'revolutionary' or 'amazing' or any number of disgustingly inappropriate modifiers. They ceaselessly use vapid 'technical' jargon made up to sound high-minded and high-tech, but is nothing more than marketing spew.

The tech advice column is full of suspicious letters that have the stench of stealth advertising. If there's one thing that's well thought-out about this magazine, it's how best to bombard the reader with sales pitches, half-truths and hype.

In short, this magazine is blatant industry propaganda. My first advice: don't buy it. If you do buy it (for the love of god) don't take anything between those covers seriously.

I subscribed to Mountain Bike Action and then decided I would try Mountain Biking for a while. BIG MISTAKE! MBA is a far better magazine! The bike reviews are more thorough and the articles by Richard Cunningham are very informative. I have been involved in Mountain Biking for over twenty years and since its inception, this magazine has been the standard! ("Dirt Rag" is good, too!)

I have been mountain biking for over 7 years. (I don't count the first time around before suspensions.) I have been a reader of mountain biking magazines for almost 7 years. The only two magazines worth subscribing to are Bike and Mountain Bike Action. Mountain Bike Action is the magazine to read when you are looking for product reviews, web retailers, and technical advice. Read Bike for the pictures (and the stories). Bike is pure mountain biking porn and will make you yearn for warm days and moist singletrack. I read both of the above magazines cover to cover and keep recent copies in my "porcelain throne room". Old copies get saved for future reference.

You may occasionally get something interesting out of Bicycling or Mountain Bike, but I usually get through those magazines in about 15 minutes and throw them out. 'Nuff said.

I love MBA but I'm not sure why anyone in their right mind would but it here for $19.99 when you can buy it directly from the publisher for $14.99. Otherwise, the mag is great. Good reviews, good pictures, decent articles. At the very least, its the best we have in the US. The UK have better mags but they cost a fortune to subscribe to over here.

I like this mag for the repair tips and reports on what is coming out. Don't ever trust a review here. You would think they would at least keep the ads and the positive reviews for a product from appearing in the same mag or within one issue...

Paris Match

Paris MatchI purchased subscription on December 23, 2006. Trusted Amazon to deliver a good service. The estimate for delivery was 4-6 weeks. Now, it is March 7, 2007; the magazine has never arrived; the provider of subscriptions first kept promising "any week now" but now they say I wouldn't start my subscription until mid-April. No explanation why. Cannot cancel and get a refund of $150. Extremely disappointed. Should have ordered directly another French weekly, subscribed directed from the publisher a month ago and already received two issues. I am not even sure at this point I would receive my paid subscription for Paris-Match. I contacted the publisher and they told me they provide US subscriptions through a completely different agent. So, Amazon, what do I do now about my subscription?

AMAZON, DITCH THIS AGENT AND FIND ANOTHER.

I still believe the magazine is worth what I had originally written (see below). However, I have not received an issue since I'd scripted the laudatory comments. I have contacted Amazon, the agent, and now Amazon again. So, I, too, will not subscribe through this venue. I'm better off paying more at a bookstore and receiving the product.

If I wish to be current with all aspects of polemics in the world a propos to the French slant, Paris Match offers the best of all. Without subscribing to a special magazine for each (politics, arts, actualities, photjournalism, opinions and surveys), Paris Match offers all. As a teacher of French in a public high school, I find Paris Match a valuable teaching tool that engages the readers to pursue certain topics with more research.

I subscribe to Paris Match through Amazon.com because it's a fast and reliable way to do it. The subscription is expensive, but I find it's worth it. It helps me keep my French current, something reading books and academic material does not do. It also gives me another viewpoint on world events. Some of the stories are extraordinary, even though lots of the material is on a par with "People" magazine.. but that can be fun, too.

Paris Match the magazine is fine, but we never received it. It's been over 4 months since the order was placed and not a single issues was sent. We also asked for customer service but only received ineptitude.

I love reading Paris Match and it's an easy and painless way to keep up on my French. Paris Match is something like a cross between People and Time magazines. It has current news about the stars and famous people and also has some articles about French government and politics. There are even articles about science, nature and medicine, and autos. A little bit of everything with the emphasis on people in the news. They always have great photos and it gives a different view of world events.

I've subscribed several years, and have currently subscribed through Amazon and have done so in the past as well. The first issue took about 5 weeks to arrive. The magazine is shipped from Canada and so sometimes in the past the magazine didn't arrive one week, but then I got two the following week. I think this is just the Canadian mail system. I've always received all 52 weekly copies and find subscribing much less expensive that trying to find them in a bookstore.

When I first started learning French I limited myself to 20 minutes per day of reading English (except for work stuff) and everything else in French including my web browser and internet websites. Paris Match was a big help in learning because it was interesting and I always looked forward to the articles. I used to sit there with a little French Dictionary Oxford French Minidictionary and have to look up half of the words or more. Now when the magazine arrives I usually read it cover to cover in a couple days and only have to use the dictionary occasionally.

I really enjoy the magazine and would recommend it to anyone learning or needing to practice the French language.

3/9/09 I just wanted to post an update to say that all of the issues of this magazine are arriving weekly as advertised. Due to the fact that they're printed in France, sometimes they're here at the beginning and sometimes at the end of the week, but they all make it in good order. I'm really enjoying all the articles and great photos on worldwide topics as well as the gossip on the French movie actors and such.

Computerworld : the Newspaper for It Leaders - Ma

Computerworld : the Newspaper for It Leaders - MaAs a long-time IT professional, I've read InfoWorld, Information Weekly, SysAdmin, Dr Dobbs, etc. etc. In 2006, the only one I read with any regularity is Computerworld. It is relevant, smart, and covers an almost impossible range of topics in a very broad IT world.

Of late, they've been doing single-page overviews of new technology (with basic definitions) intended to get you up to speed on a buzzword or technology, and point you in the right direction for more information. They have excellent columnists on the whole (I can do without Curt Monash's DBMS theories) and some amazing reporters. There's hardly a week that doesn't bring me something new to learn or consider.

Rounding out its better aspects is the sections closer to the front, containing shorter articles and snippets that often lead to more reading on my part, all good pointers. Finally, there's the Shark Tank, the back page column that lists dumb things in IT (think Dilbert's daily routine).

My biggest problem has to do with the Editor-in-Chief. I hardly ever agree with Don Tennant's editorials, and think he's more of a China apologist than anything else. Still, his magazine is a very good one, and worth reading for anyone in the IT industry who needs a really good view of what's going on today. I can tolerate his dumb opinions, so long as the rest of the magazine remains so good.

Liguorian

LiguorianLIGUORIAN is a magazine published monthly. It contains a variety of articles on doctrine, scripture, social issues, as well as some jokes at the end and editorials. On the whole I enjoy LIGUORIAN, but would appreciate a more pro-active stance by ALL its writers defending abjectly with no equivocation, ALL of the teachings of the Church without exception.

Classic Trucks (1-year auto-renewal)

Classic TrucksI started reading magazine years before I bought my first classic truck, mostly because I wanted to learn more about how much work goes into restoring a classic truck. I'm glad I subscribed, I've been a happy subscriber for about 4 years and I'm going to share my reasons why.

1.) I love old Chevy's. There is plenty of Ford and Chevy truck coverage. They try to incorporate Dodge, Studebaker, International and other less prolific brands too, but much of it comes from reader interest and what's out there.

2.) The articles are down to earth, so none of those obnoxious, snarky, self indulgent pieces that you may find in some of the major car magazines.

3.) Great depictions of the projects they take on. This gives you a good idea before-hand if you have the skill set, tools or space to take on the tasks. This is a magazine you can book mark and reference later.

4.) Full color magazine

5.) Interesting ads, all related to classic trucks and restoration parts

6.) Plenty of advice to help start a build.

Con

1.) If you are into Willys, Dodge, Studebaker, or International, you may not feel like they get as much coverage as the Fords and Chevys.

If you like this magazine, I also recommend Custom Classic Trucks.

Classic Truck Magazine is the quintessential magazine for those who enjoy Classic Trucks --Be Cool, Be Classy ----read Classic Trucks !

If you are into up gardeing old trucks ,advertisements of modern parts(no old parts ) Very short articles about peoples trucks and in no hurry to receive your magazine--this you might like. Myself--I would NOT buy it AGAIN . It is a waste of money. I WOULD NOT buy it again. When I get mine now--in the trash it goes.

Foxtalk

FoxtalkThis is a terrific information source for anyone serious about Visual Foxpro development. I reckon I know VFP pretty well, but I still learn something new from every issue of this excellent journal.

Don't be put off by its diminutive size. Although most issues run to only 20 24 pages, they are packed full of useful information. They are almost completely free of advertising, marketing fluff and editorial waffle. Each month you get four to six solid articles, focusing on essential programming issues. Subscribers can also obtain free source code downloads.

Recent features which I have found particularly valuable include:

A fascinating series by Predrag Bosnic on unusual user interface devices (combo trees, multi-line tooltips and the like).

Some excellent articles by Doug Hennig, dealing with data classes and the CursorAdapter class.

Useful insights into integrating VFP with Microsoft Outlook.

And my favorite: the Kit Box column, full of easily-digestible tips and techniques.

Even if only one article per issue was useful to you, a FoxTalk subscription would pay for itself many times over.

Amina

AminaI've been familiar with Amina for about 20 years now and have never wavered from subscibing to it. Not only does it educate and inform, it also entertains. It brings together women of the African diaspora and has just the most meaningful pieces of information: from the latest African fashions, to health concerns to recipes! It is a wonderful magazine! It's worth knowing French just to read this magazine!

America in WWII

America in WWIIAmerica in WWII is a well-written magazine. It focuses on stories from the homefront as well as the military. Many stories are told in the first person adding credibility and detail not found in other accounts. Solicited stories submitted are interesting and fresh perspectives of a bygone era. I read each issue cover to cover. Well-done.

America in WW II is a look at ourselves during the dark days of the second world war. It takes a different approach to the war by presenting actual first person accounts from the average GI and Sailor in addition to how life on the Home Front was at the same time. There are enough publications on this time period covering the generals, the armies and the tactics, but America in WW II actually brings the war home. There is truly something for every historian of World War II, no matter where your interests lie. The first WW II magazine I have enjoyed enough to actually subscribe to.

Heat - En

Heat - EnWhen I was living in London last year I randomly came upon heat and was INSTANTLY addicted. My flatmates and I would go back and forth between buying it week after week. I couldn't wait for Tuesday to role around so I could get the next issue. heat not only has great paparrazi photos, but it's hilarious. Whoever the writers are, they're genius. I love the sense of humor and teasing of celebrities. I especially love that they don't validate celebs for getting increasingly skinny and unhealthy, such as every American counterpart does.

Heat has got to be the best goss magazine ever! I've never really enjoyed People or any of those crap American magazines at the checkout of virtually every supermarket. Brit celebs are so much more interesting! After my very first issue, I was hooked. The pics, the gossip, the headlines, the stories.....I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting! And I wanted MORE! Heat, you just cannot put down. Once I get a new issue, I don't even know where to start. There are so many juicy headlines...which one do I read first? Then I have to wait an entire week until I can get my hands on the next one.....

Buy Heat - En Now

Without a doubt the best weekly magazine in the UK. Possibly even good enough to rival US 'People' magazine! It contains celebrity stories, celebrity interviews, style tips, humorous articles and pictures and reviews of the latest movies, music and books. Not to mention a weekly tv guide with digital channels included.

In short, a magazine NOT to be missed!
