Acres USA

Acres USAAcres USA; The Voice of Eco-Agriculture

I read this monthly magazine from cover to cover every month and it is super and I can never get enough.

Different sections are as follows:

ECO-UPDATE fills a couple pages and it covers world environmental, GMO, pesticide, food recalls etc ... food news, and it is a must read. This latest addition talked about who owns the rain and water catchment laws in America, CAFO laws, GMO-Free rights and how European countries are fighting the push from large corporations like Monsanto, to use GMO seeds.

Industrial AG Watch; news from the other side of agriculture very interesting and useful information.

Organic News: talks about political appointments, organic trends across America and the world, and other studies. There are always a couple interesting articles about organic corporations who have lied or gotten fined for not being completely organic.

Transitions; Thoughts on Organic Food and Farming

And from there the editorial staff concentrates on different issues.

There are always important and interesting articles on pasture management and heard nutrition, last month there was an interview about the dairy industry and milk prices, weeds and soil nutrition, they have a brilliant writer, Kinsey, who writes about soil and answers a question every month.

February had an extremely informative chicken issue, this September 2009 has articles on fungus and fungus treatment, being that Late Blight is a big topic this wet year in the North East.

There are articles on different livestock every month like this month they have an article on Whey-Fed Pigs, sometimes they concentrate on certain heirloom breeds or common farm breeds.

Many of the articles are written by different farmers who have made detailed studies and they are very hands-on and helpful even though many of these farmers are not in the North East, but in Missouri and other big farming areas the information I still find pertinent.

Other good sections are the Eco-Gardener, The Harvest table; honoring food from farm to fork this month talking about making your own butter, The Natural Vet, Health & Healing this month is about genetically engineered crops being in our food chain, and Health & Healing News updates studies like a Folate vs Cancer study, Books and Information, The Last Word, View from the Country and the Classifieds.

This is a terrific magazine if you are interested in gardening, farming, self sustainability, animal husbandry and organic living.

October 2009 update: I'm still loving Acres and reading 99% of each monthly magazine really my most fav read!

Referred to me by a Californian who has an organic farm business I was skeptical I could find useful articles since I live in the Upper Peninisula of Michigan but...I love this magazine. It is very informative, covers a wide range of topics including permaculture, organic farming and husbandry, offers many resources and lists interesting seminars in the U.S. Definitely worth it.

Channel Guide

Channel GuideThis magazine is a great resource but I absolutely LOVE the September fall preview issue. I rely on it every year to know what I should record on my DVR and what I should skip. As a cable customer with a DVR and an on-screen guide TV listings menu I promise you that this magazine is still helpful. The magazine makes recommendations and suggestions for the entire month. The articles introduce me to shows I never would've found scanning through the on-screen guide. Plus, you frequently get to download special programming calendars around the holidays. This magazine is a must have if you love watching TV and movies.

I've read the magazine for a number of years and it never disappoints me. Not only do I get schedules at a moment's notice I can search by by show name, by specials, by sports, almost anyway you could identify what you want to watch. You get the added bonus of entertainment news. Get it, it's good.

Pastel Journal (1-year)

Pastel JournalI accidentally happened upon the August 2005 issue and couldn't believe the cover was a pastel. I have dabbled in pastel recently and quickly snatched this up. There are lots of beautiful photographs of contemporary works with features on the artists' themselves, some of which have step by step photos of how the work was achieved. The downside is that there are only 6 issues per year. The back of the magazine has an extensive listing of pastel courses/workshops/exhibitions throughout the US and internationally, taught by prominent pastelists.

I'm amending this review. I got a subscription and the delivery was horrible. I often did not get issues unless I emailed the company, or they came very late. It seems as if they're extremely disorganized I'm not sure what's going on, but I did not continue my subscription. Beware!

I find this is worthy of a subscription to keep up with info, artists names, and some excellent art. I find some issues have artists with horrible compositions, weak or incorrect values, inconsistant light sources, or temperature control in paintings. I am open to abstracts, tight realism, loose impressionism, surrealism, etc but ALL SHOULD have correct design principles and fundamentals. About every 3 issues is a winner with 7/8 of the artists strong but some of the other issues you are lucky to find 1/4 that don't look like they are a novice.

This is generally my problem with art magazines. I have better luck with instructive videos when it comes to painting and drawing.

Pastel Journal first issue arrived before Xmas!

What a surprise for my artist friend. She

called right away to thank me. Said it was a great gift since with each issue she learns and is inspired.

Nothing could please me more than to hear the gratitude in her voice.

Thanks Amazon for fast processing!

The Artist's Magazine (1-year)

The Artist's MagazineI have purchased these magazines before, and found them instructional, eye-apealing, and usually read them cover to cover. Step-by-step instructions, and plenty of color pictures. Each issue has something new. Definitely worth the money. I am a self-taught artist, and have found insightful ways of practicing through this mag. It covers a range of mediums and methods, and normally has a special section of artwork from various artists. A valuable tool for any artist:)

The Artist's Magazine is full of advice and ideas for anyone studying or teaching art; from its first monthly department, "Dialogue", which is a question and answer column from readers, to the final page "Master Class", which gives the history and analysis of a famous work, you will get articles that cover many techniques and media, as well as guidelines on the business side of art.

Taking the March 2003 issue as an example, the cover story is on the exquisite gouache paintings of Daniel K. Tennant. One of the four works pictured is broken down and shown in six stages, from the initial layout to the final delicate details.

Artist Joseph Frassetta explains his technique in "Reining it In", and tells us what materials and tools he uses to create his realistic portraiture and animal studies.

There is another article on landscape painting through the four seasons, and others on doing a self-portrait, mixing the use of colored pencils, and so much more. Some favorite monthly articles are "Art Clinic" and "Technical Q&A", which always have useful tips.

The back of the magazine has classified listings of art related opportunities, workshops, etc., and even the ads can be an informative resource.

The Artist's Magazine also sponsors a yearly competition, with many categories, including a student/beginner division.

The magazine has medium weight paper, good color reproduction, and teachers and students, especially of a traditional style of art, will find much to enjoy and learn in every issue.

Buy The Artist's Magazine (1-year) Now

I've enjoyed this magazine for years and have the habit of keeping all issues because they never fail to possess something of proven value. It's top-notch for getting great ideas and quality advise on anything pertaining to art. Like any other magazine, it gives you a dose of advertising, but it's not incredible over done.

Subjects range from portrait/self-portrait to landscape, still life and abstract design. But it doesn't end there; this magazine details style diversities from all across the board. Offering examples for improving techniques in various mediums, but generally pencil, watercolor, pastel, oil and acrylic. And no matter what the area or medium you specialize in, you'll be able to pick up handy tips in every issue. Sections of interest regularly highlight a specific tool or technique idea. Inform readers on market issues and other important business concerns. As well as provide interesting articles on artists and a little news and awareness of art related events. Plus will occasionally dip into art history and perform art contests.

This magazine will energize your motivations with impressive art and will help you improve on your own with short & simple instructions. Truly is thee magazine to have, for an artist at any skill level. [review author: tilley_traveler]

Whether you are a novice or a pro, this magazine is a must. It is not overly technical and it features a variety of media. I am a faithful reader and I frequently commend it to others. My only gripe is the inconsistency of writing. Some articles are little more than glorified captions for a few photographs of an artist's work. Other articles do an excellent job of explaining what the artist did to get the wonderful effect displayed in the photographs of the artwork. I'm more interested in technique than the artist's background and training. All in all, though, buy it you'll like it.

Chasseur D Images

Chasseur D ImagesIf you can read French, this is a great magazine for enthusiasts of photography, either film-based (argentique) or digital (numerique). If you struggle to read French, your visual reward is still ample. Articles are lavishly illustrated and technically detailed. They cover all photography from every angle. Aesthetics of composition, lighting, and such are covered with many examples, including portfolios of both pros and amateurs. You'll find lots of comparison shopping; with markets internationalized, price comparisons are mostly applicable even in the U. S. Every issue has many technical comparisons of films, cameras, lenses. There are abundant articles on techniques in camera, in the darkroom, and on the computer. Other articles cover locations well, OK, it helps to be in France, but that's true apart from photography!...and they have had articles about the U. S. A subscription is pricey, but the magazine is huge in both page format and page count, and a real feast for the eyes. I was debating subscribing, given how complicated it would be from the U. S., but Amazon makes it easy.

Muse

MuseMuse is an exceptional magazine. Though it is aimed at "tweens", gifted readers from about age 7 up can appreciate it. Parents may wish to pre-read or discuss controversial pieces with their children. There are plenty of interesting articles on a variety of topics. Recent issues have covered stone disks in the Yap islands, gamers making real money from selling virtual goods, racial prejudice, genetics, and snowflakes.

Muse magazine does not contain any advertising, other than subscription offers from the publisher. It's quite refreshing. Some of my family's other magazines (Sports Illustrated Kids, for example) are filled with ads for junk food and toys.

A full page in Muse is always devoted to Larry Gonick's "Kokopelli & Company", a cartoon featuring the magazine's quirky cartoon mascots. These tiny creatures also cavort on pages throughout the magazine. Bo's Page is another regular feature. Here, readers may learn about a scientific experiment to discover how ants find their way home, or why gorillas eat wood, and vote as to whether humans will survive to the year 2100. The Q & A section has answers to queries submitted by readers. Examples questions are "would time travel actually be possible?" and "what happens when you blow a (soap) bubble in winter?" . Robert Coontz and Rosanne Spector provide clear, and often humorous, answers. Ivars Peterson is the Muse math guru. His "Math Page" offers suduko challenges and other math puzzles as well as articles such as "The Simpsons and Math". Every issue of Muse offers a contest of some sort, tucked into the corner of a two page spread honoring winners of the previous issue's contest. Kids are invited to become living art in a tableau vivant, or to design imaginary money.

I highly recommend Muse for both boys and girls.

If I listed the topics Muse covers, you'd never imagine

that anyone would be excited about it. It's just

so well done, though. My kids read it instantly,

cover to cover, and they even push it to their friend's

parents.

Even more oddly, most of it is good for adults, too.

At least, for adults who haven't had all the curiosity

and silliness beaten out of them. And, it's even right!

(I used an article in a University course I teach.)

It has a little of the flavour of Buckaroo Banzai,

of Dark Star (the Movie), of Larry Gonick's Cartoon Guides,

a touch of (but only a touch) of Horrible Histories...

There isn't anything quite like it. I hope they can

keep it up.

Buy Muse Now

Where to start? Muse always has great articles about science or sometimes an interesting story from history. One of the main things about them that stands out to me, is that they don't go down to the level of just plain pop-culture. They also don't take themselves too seriously, and this results in the magazine being very fresh, and incredibly funny!!!!! The arrival of Muse in my house always makes my week, and I promise, YOU WANT THIS MAGAZINE!!!!!!!!!!!

Singing News Magazine

Singing News MagazineI have been exposed to the Singing News for going on 30 years and I am totally sold on its contributors as well as it's staff. This publication keeps fans and gospel music listeners abreast of the up and coming events, personnel changes and special needs of groups that travel around singing Southern Gospel music. I truly love the articles and pictures which bring some very popular people down to a regular persons level. By no means are they gods but they all (gospel music legends) are held in high regards. If you desire to be informed in this venue of music, this would be the magazine for you.

Just subscribed to The Singing News and received it after about 6 wks! Thanks for putting our Gospel group, THE TIPTONS, inside the July 2012 (pg 36) issue. Love how you all help Southern Gospel groups and report on and about them. God bless you!:)

Council members should relinquish their membership when it comes to receiving awards or honors at the ceremonies.

My favorite group walked away with numerous awards. I have always believe that they were #1, but three of the group members serve as Board of Directors for several southern gospel music events.

Some people are questioning why their favorite group wasn't nominated for an award. There are other qualified people who can serve on the board of directors.

I haven't mastered the craft of writing, but it can't be any worst than trying to read those pseudo-blog sites that are under various disguises and names.

Truck Model World

Truck Model WorldToo bad we can't get a cool pub like this in the US. With the emphasis on Brit/Euro trucks its appeal may not be happening for every truck modeler in the States.

There are enough US vehicles to make it worthwhile for me,plus the craftsmanship is superb on most models.

It also helps to see what other modelers are doing, not to mention the Brit/Euro aftermarket that is available.

Subscribing bring the price down to a reasonable amount, plus it comes in a poly bag to prevent folding, spindling and mutilating by the USPS.

Recomended to global truck modelers.

Ps,the customer service in the States is outstanding, thank you!!!!

The Sun

The SunThe Sun is the best literary magazine I have ever seen. The authors change with each issue, other than the editor's contributions, but the quality stays the same: Great!

There's a good mix of long and short works, and b & w photography, and my favorite part of the magazine is called Readers Write. They choose a subject for each issue (several months ahead of time) and all sorts of people send in their short pieces written with that topic in mind. They publish a good number of these, and it's always really engaging, fascinating, and human stuff. The Sun is one of the only magazines I've consistently read from cover to cover, every time.

The Sun is like a dear friend who comes to visit once a month. Make a pot of tea, sit down in a comfortable chair with a good reading light, stay there for the next few hours while you read it cover to cover. You might want to have a tissue or two handy: in almost every issue there is something that moves me to tears. (This month's Readers Write section on Apologies, for instance.) You might have a hankering to write an impassioned letter to the editor, arguing with the latest interview with some activist or teacher, or take a stab at your own Readers Write piece. (The upcoming subjects are listed several months in advance.)

There is nothing like The Sun. It's not for everybody. It may not be for you. It's certainly left of center politically. It's often dark many have accused it of sometimes having a sad or depressing tone. And sometimes it does. But life is sometimes dark. The Sun isn't afraid to look at all of life: darkness and light, peace and violence, birth and death, the spirit and the flesh. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews, memoirs and essays, beautiful black and white photography, and not one single word of advertising. I've been a subscriber for the past fifteen years. I hope to keep renewing my subscription for another fifteen, and beyond.

Buy The Sun Now

I was introduced to The Sun through one of my old college professors. I took the magazine home and devoured every word from cover to cover. I then odered a subscription to the magazine, and have enjoyed and looked forward to each and every issue for the past two years. I enjoy reading the "readers write" section first and then the rest of the magazine. The magazine has served as a introduction to other authors that I have sought outside of the perameters of the magazine itself. If you enjoy reading thought provoking interviews in addition to well written short stories, then you should take a look at this magazine,it would well be worth the effort.

Read Best Reviews of The Sun Here

Sy Safransky's literary magazine is a monthly source of interesting fiction, poetry, photography, essays, memoirs and true stories, including a featured monthly interview. In black and white, with no advertisements (save in-house promotions), two years ago I would have given The Sun five stars, certainly, when I first subscribed and for years afterwards. I anxiously awaited each month's copy, which I read from cover to cover. The quality of writing is superior, the subjects topical and relevant and Safransky's devotion to this endeavor admirable. However, over the last two years I haven't been able to sustain the same level of interest, a fact which may have more to do with my reading preferences than the magazine. After eight years, I am sensing a lack of innovation in the stories. But for anyone who has not yet discovered The Sun, this format is refreshing, the concerns of the common man and an interest in our society and the world a breath of fresh air.

Another very popular feature is "Reader's Write", each month introducing a different topic, where readers are encouraged to send in their personal stories. Often this feature is the most provocative segment of the magazine, slices of everyday life without literary pretensions. Most, but not all, issues have a page of Safransky's personal notes, insights into the thinking of the man behind the scenes and a page of "Sunbeams", quotes relevant to each issue, also submitted by readers. Although the magazine is sometimes criticized in Letters to the Editor for its preoccupation with problems in the modern world, this is one of the few venues where readers and writers have such freedom of expression, the commonality of difficulties often a bridge to understanding. Beset on all sides by intrusive advertising, disguised agendas and the pandering to self-indulgence, The Sun's conscientious participation in society, fostering more fulfilling lives, is a forum that should be enthusiastically supported. Luan Gaines/ 2005.

You will find this quote on the first page inside the front cover of every issue of this wonderful periodical. I savor every page of each issue I recieve. The photography is brilliant and thought-provoking. The short stories and poems are amazing. It sheds light into places where we have all been, but at a different angle. It shows a new perspective to things normal people endure and experience everyday. I absolutely love this magazine.

I've been a subscriber for years, and strongly recommend this publication.

Christine Adamec

Author, There ARE Babies to Adopt

Adoptive Families is a must have magazine for families created through adoption. I am currently waiting to travel to China to get my daughter, but I have already found this magazine to be invaluable. The great things is that all kinds of adoption are discussed, domestic, open, international. It is reassuring to know that there are so many other families that were created through adoption.
