Woman's Day (1-year auto-renewal)

Woman's DayI've been reading this magazine for years and used to really love it. However, in recent months the editor-in-chief was replaced and I do not like the changes that have come about since then. The month of menus feature no longer features "Sunday Dinner" style recipes and in general fewer of the menus seem appetizing. The magazine used to include a few articles about parenting and children, which doesn't apply to me but before I definitely understood the need for them. Since the new editor there seem to be even more which means less content for those of us who have not had children or who have older children or empty nests. There seem to be more pages about clothes and makeup and shopping than before, and less content about living well from a non-materialistic viewpoint. Also, my favorite feature used to be their inspirational quotes on the last page which has now been replaced with "everyday things you should know how to do," which for me has not been a useful or enjoyable feature whatsoever, and I really miss being able to flip to that last page for a quick lift when I couldn't devour the entire magazine immediately. All in all I have been disappointed in every single issue I have received since the change in editors and will not be renewing my subscription.

I received a subscription to Woman's Day at a very discounted price. The paper is cheap but the content of the magazine is good. Recipes are easy, tasty and made from ingredients found at a regular supermarket. Parenting articles are targeted towards parents of grade schoolers and teenagers. Makeup and product suggestions are reasonable and you won't find a recommendation for a $500 purse or pair of shoes. Overall I'm a satisfied reader but may alternate yearly subscriptions between this and Family Circle.

I always saw this magazine in the newsstands and never paid it much mind and sometimes gor it confused with other magazines for some reason. Amazon was offering a special on a subscription for it and I decided to take the chance because I love to read magazines as a way to decompress after a long day. Womans day offers informative articles that educate without the preachiness and verboseness of other magazines. Sometimes other magazines try to be so intellectual that they just manage to aggravate the reader. It' straight to the point and entertaining as well. It had real world articles about real world people. The recipes were excellent and the ads and inserts were not to distracting and annoying like other magazines. The only thing I am upset about is the fact that I missed out on years of enjoyment because I passed it up. Highly recommend it!!!

I love this magazine! Im 28 yr old and im so sick of magazines that focus all their attention on "How to please a man/how to get a man." Woman's Day is such a well rounded magazine, it has everything! Articles range from topics about health, recipes, inspiring stories, work out plans, beauty tips etc....seriously everything. I would definitely recommend woman's day to everyone, if you're thinking about subscribing do it, you won't regret it, it is money well spent!

Publishers Weekly

Publishers Weekly(2008 HOLIDAY TEAM)Publishers Weekly is a staple of the publishing business. Editors, publishers, agents, writers, reviewers, and booksellers pony up the exorbitant subscription fees so they can be the first to know about upcoming releases, changes in personnel, and hot deals. Each week the magazine features an author, sometimes famous, sometimes up-and-coming. They run features on audio books, religious releases, children's books, and many others throughout the course of the year. The weekly forecast section runs short reviews of books (in all genres) that will be released over the next three months, giving readers a glimpse of the future. The PW bestseller lists are reliable indicators of what is selling in bookstores all over the United States.

Publishers Weekly is probably the only magazine that sells its cover to advertisers, giving you an idea of the type of trade journal it is. I do not recommend it for anyone who is not associated with publishing. But for those who are, this is a professional expense you won't regret spending.

I have been a subscriber for years and have grudgingly paid more and more every year for my subscription. Still I have always loved PW and look forward to my weekly edition...although I do not always receive my magazine in a timely manner. Whether because I live on the West Coast or if it's just the mail, I don't know. Sometimes it arrives way into the following week, sometimes closer to the beginning of the week. I still find the magazine valuable, but have to say the following:

For a magazine directed at the publishing trade I find it ludicrous that there are so many typos in the reviews as well as the text. WHO IS DOING THE PROOF READING HERE? There is a new format that has updated the look, but I miss the best seller lists being in the back of the magazine. Now they're somewhat in the middle and one definitely can't just easily flip to them. Also, the Q&A's with authors are so stupidly placed in issues which don't contain the review of the author's book who is being interviewed. Instead, there is a reference date to the issue said book was reviewed in. It's frustrating to read the Q&A and then not be able to see the review of the author's book in the same issue. I guess the publisher thinks people keep the magazine at least 4 weeks or issues just lie around the house or office and pile up. I like the "Deals" columm and "Hollywood Reader" column, but my very favorite section is the Author Profile. I am curious tho about the age of some of the writers in this publication... I'd also like to know how the magazine and the editors decide what book should get a starred review. Sometimes I'm astounded as to what gets starred. The website, which you get full access to when you register as a subscriber to the magazine, is easy to use. Even before I receive my issue in the mail, I can see the latest issue on line.

...however I have recently let my subscription lapse. I am NOT in the book publishing business, I am just an avid reader. The synopsis and reviews contained within, often led me to books that I might otherwise have missed--that's why I indulged in the price of this weekly magazine. I also loved the fact that it's a WEEKLY mag. All the other book publishing info contained within was completely un-useful to me. Unfortunately over the years, it has become just too pricey for me. Reluctantly I have not renewed my subscription. It will be missed (except for the cost).

Sad to have purchased this item. Not worth the subscription price. I used to use it to advertise editorial services, but they no longer have that feature. Not useful in my business and when the issues come I just throw them out.

The Crafts Report (1-year auto-renewal)

The Crafts ReportThe Craft Review has a cover tag that claims it is the business resource for artists and retailers. While I am not sure that it lives up to the tag line, I believe that it is a strong startup resource for a crafter expanding their business.

The magazine is published monthly by Jones Publishing Inc. Oddly enough, the most helpful section for me turned out to the the questions and answer column, since the questions asked were questions I had concerns about. The subjects addressed how to sell in a booth, what to wear, when to approach a customer, trusting other people to man your booth, etc.

In the March 2008 issue columns included Co-Op Advertising, Applying to Craft Shows, and Developing Business Goals. Most of the columns were informative and interesting to read, with photos and graphics interesting enough to hold an artists' eye.

The magazine assumes that you know your craft and are interested in learning about the business end of it. I think anyone trying to expand their sales further than their hometown could learn a few things from this publication.

I find the articles informative and relevant to anyone in the Craft/Art world. I read it cover to cover and find out about crafts I am unfamiliar with as well as the ones I am very familiar with.

Mes Premiers J Aime Lire - Print + CD-Rom

Mes Premiers J Aime Lire - Print + CD-RomMy 7-year-old daughter speaks French pretty well but is still learning to read. Mes premiers j'aime lire magazine is wonderful. Each issue comes with a short story that is also read on the accompanying CD (5-10 minutes in length). The stories are interesting and while written for children always have new vocabulary words that neither of us know. I enjoy listening to the CDs and my daughter listens to them over and over again! In addition to the main story, there are several "bandes dessinees" (comic strips) in each issue, a word search or other simple word games, and 2 pages of definitions for particularly challenging vocabulary. This is a wonderful addition to our regular French learning curriculum and highly recommended. It took almost 2 months before the first issue was delivered but now I get them regularly and in excellent condition.

For over a century it has provided independent and in-depth analysis of the issues that impact New York City's civil servants -the policemen, teachers, transit workers, firefighters and more. As a stalwart champion of the civil service merit system, it has frequently aroused the ire of city officials, union leaders. Music Connection

Music ConnectionHad always heard about it, but the first time I read MC was when I started working for this music management firm couple years ago. The office subscribes. Compared to the other notable music magazines I've browsed, Music Connection cover stories always seem to showcase bands, artists and producers I'd actually be interested in reading about. I was fortunate enough to even have my own music reviewed in one of their issues! The folks who put this mag together seem to be real musicians and genuine music fans, making for a great publication!

Music Connection is a great magazine. Being a publicist, I've worked with them directly and can only say good things. When covering large name artists, they always make sure to ask questions that will be helpful for smaller, up and coming artists and all their articles are a good read.

This magazine is packed with good music business information. It has frequent interviews with heavy decision makers and could be used as a good source for understanding current and future trends within the industry. This is a must have for anyone who is or wishes to enter the music industry. That being said it isn't perfect. It doesn't provide information backed by credible research. If a business provides subpar service you'll never know it until after the fact. It also doesn't do well in terms of providing tips, tricks, and how-tos, but if you want to know about available resources or read the perspective of business leaders this is a good magazine to purchase.

I got this for a teen cousin of mine that was interested in music as a career. I later canceled it (and I'm still waiting on that to go through) because it was over her head. I think it would be very good for someone that can grasp the information better. For a teen, stick to the more basic mags.

Asian Diver

Asian DiverLiving in northern Australia there are a range of Asian destinations that are closer to me than other parts of my own country. Hence my next dive is just as likely to be overseas as domestic. Which is where this magazine comes in. I'm not going to tell you it's the best dive magazine in the world because I haven't read them all but I will opint out a few things;

A) Firstly it is in English. There, that's said.

B) It is not overly expensive and has all the benefits of wonderful photography and by concentrating on Asian dive sites it is perhaps the perfect magazine to score yourself a copy or three of if you are considering travelling to that part of the world. Further if you already live in that divers paradise of a continent then you might as well subscribe.

C) The articles are well laid out and there is a variety of subjects covered. Just flicking through my last issue there are articles on ice diving, cave diving, the Dead Sea (not every article is about Asia) and as per many other magazines there is a selection of regular segments to back up the 'feature' articles.

If I have a criticism it is that once again we have a magazine somewhat more aimed at those with fairly significant budgets or who have had the time to get highly skilled at their craft. As per many other dive magazines (or any specialty magazine for that matter) there is a bit too much coverage given to 'dream scenario' stuff rather than things that you or I might actually be able to do with our more modest time/finances.

Vogue (2-year)

VogueI was sent two old issues I had already read to start my subscription. I don't want old issues and should be extended 2 additional months. I love Vogue.

This is really the best way to go with magazine subscriptions. I love getting them and through Amazon they've become super affordable. Also, they remind me electronically when to review--much easier for me than sending mail. (Though I love getting mail).

Also, the price is super hard to beat!

And lastly, I made a mistake when ordering a magazine subscription for a friend and ordered several supscritions for one friend of the same publication. Wasn't able to rectify the problem through the Amazon site so I called the magazine subscription on the phone. Yay! A real person who as able to take care of the my messed up order. He as fast, thorough and friendly.

Pretty much order all subscriptions for myself and friends through Amazon now. Hard to beat the price too.

Muse

MuseMuse is an exceptional magazine. Though it is aimed at "tweens", gifted readers from about age 7 up can appreciate it. Parents may wish to pre-read or discuss controversial pieces with their children. There are plenty of interesting articles on a variety of topics. Recent issues have covered stone disks in the Yap islands, gamers making real money from selling virtual goods, racial prejudice, genetics, and snowflakes.

Muse magazine does not contain any advertising, other than subscription offers from the publisher. It's quite refreshing. Some of my family's other magazines (Sports Illustrated Kids, for example) are filled with ads for junk food and toys.

A full page in Muse is always devoted to Larry Gonick's "Kokopelli & Company", a cartoon featuring the magazine's quirky cartoon mascots. These tiny creatures also cavort on pages throughout the magazine. Bo's Page is another regular feature. Here, readers may learn about a scientific experiment to discover how ants find their way home, or why gorillas eat wood, and vote as to whether humans will survive to the year 2100. The Q & A section has answers to queries submitted by readers. Examples questions are "would time travel actually be possible?" and "what happens when you blow a (soap) bubble in winter?" . Robert Coontz and Rosanne Spector provide clear, and often humorous, answers. Ivars Peterson is the Muse math guru. His "Math Page" offers suduko challenges and other math puzzles as well as articles such as "The Simpsons and Math". Every issue of Muse offers a contest of some sort, tucked into the corner of a two page spread honoring winners of the previous issue's contest. Kids are invited to become living art in a tableau vivant, or to design imaginary money.

I highly recommend Muse for both boys and girls.

If I listed the topics Muse covers, you'd never imagine

that anyone would be excited about it. It's just

so well done, though. My kids read it instantly,

cover to cover, and they even push it to their friend's

parents.

Even more oddly, most of it is good for adults, too.

At least, for adults who haven't had all the curiosity

and silliness beaten out of them. And, it's even right!

(I used an article in a University course I teach.)

It has a little of the flavour of Buckaroo Banzai,

of Dark Star (the Movie), of Larry Gonick's Cartoon Guides,

a touch of (but only a touch) of Horrible Histories...

There isn't anything quite like it. I hope they can

keep it up.

Where to start? Muse always has great articles about science or sometimes an interesting story from history. One of the main things about them that stands out to me, is that they don't go down to the level of just plain pop-culture. They also don't take themselves too seriously, and this results in the magazine being very fresh, and incredibly funny!!!!! The arrival of Muse in my house always makes my week, and I promise, YOU WANT THIS MAGAZINE!!!!!!!!!!!

Ebony (1-year auto-renewal)

EbonyBeing one of the most popular Black magazines in the country it should be available for Kindle perhaps you would even get some new subscribers.

Bottom-Line: When all is said and done "Ebony Magazine" is a necessary part of the Black American experience and growing up without its sometimes shallow, but always relevant words.

Like most Black Americans who grew up in the age of the Civil Right movement, my household always had an issue of "Ebony Magazine" somewhere in the living room. Even young I understood the vital connection the magazine afforded our household to the wider Black American community; "Ebony Magazine" has always been for, by and about Black Americans. Over the intervening years that formulation has not changed even as the magazine has undergone modernization, and left most of its rather shallow articles behind.

Today's "Ebony Magazine", which once again adorns our homes' coffee table, is new and more, shall we say, upscale, than the periodical of my youth. The images are more professional finished, it articles (for the most part) have more depth, and advertisements though still slanted toward hair and beauty products have a higher gloss on them. And speaking of advertisements, like most modern magazine, there are a lot of them; it is not an exaggeration to state that fully half of the magazine is given over to them. And they run the gambit from full two page spreads on automobiles, to one page write-up's on food, clothing, and the ubiquitous beauty products.

"Ebony Magazine" likes to showcase celebrities and other successful and notable Black Americans, but the magazine does a good job of showcasing work-a-day black people that have made the American Dream their own. The whole magazine is devoted to uplifting stories about and for black people, and in this vain "Ebony Magazine" is a great counter balance to all of the negative stories in the mainstream press about Black Americans.

The March 2007 issue for instance featured a rather lengthy article on Raven Symone of The Cosby Show and That's So Raven fame, entitled The $400 Million Dollar Woman. There was also a very informative and engaging article on the new governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick who holds the title of the second black governor of an American state. And still another about the harm Hip-Hop and Rap music can and probably is doing to the self-esteem of Black children. The article entitled Sex, Violence, and Disrespect: What Hip-Hop Had Done To Our Women was written by Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, the president of Bennett College for Women, and president emeritus of Spelman College. The article mirrors a chapter in her latest book, co-authored with Dr. Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Gender Talk: The Struggle for Woman's Equality in African American Communities, and is a fitting discussion on an issue vexing the Black American community at large.

But there was also a rather shallow article on interracial dating, entitled, Is Love Becoming Color-Blind? The article really lends very little to the discussion of this complex issue, and such articles have always--regrettably--found a home within the pages of "Ebony Magazine."

Like all periodicals, "Ebony Magazine" reserves certain sections for monthly re-occurring features. These include Letter to The Editor, Ebony Book Shelf, Center Stage, Money Talk, Sisterspeak, Ebony Advisor, Body Talk, among others. All and all these monthly sections are fun to read, but honestly offer little in the way of useful information, with the exception of Ebony Book Shelf, and Ebony Travel Guide.

When all is said and done "Ebony Magazine" is a necessary part of the Black American experience and growing up without its sometimes shallow, but always relevant words. Those words inspired, they energized, and they lent and lend purpose to life in a world where Black Americans, young and old, find little in main stream American culture to encourage them.
