Woman's Day (1-year auto-renewal)

Woman's DayI've been reading this magazine for years and used to really love it. However, in recent months the editor-in-chief was replaced and I do not like the changes that have come about since then. The month of menus feature no longer features "Sunday Dinner" style recipes and in general fewer of the menus seem appetizing. The magazine used to include a few articles about parenting and children, which doesn't apply to me but before I definitely understood the need for them. Since the new editor there seem to be even more which means less content for those of us who have not had children or who have older children or empty nests. There seem to be more pages about clothes and makeup and shopping than before, and less content about living well from a non-materialistic viewpoint. Also, my favorite feature used to be their inspirational quotes on the last page which has now been replaced with "everyday things you should know how to do," which for me has not been a useful or enjoyable feature whatsoever, and I really miss being able to flip to that last page for a quick lift when I couldn't devour the entire magazine immediately. All in all I have been disappointed in every single issue I have received since the change in editors and will not be renewing my subscription.

I received a subscription to Woman's Day at a very discounted price. The paper is cheap but the content of the magazine is good. Recipes are easy, tasty and made from ingredients found at a regular supermarket. Parenting articles are targeted towards parents of grade schoolers and teenagers. Makeup and product suggestions are reasonable and you won't find a recommendation for a $500 purse or pair of shoes. Overall I'm a satisfied reader but may alternate yearly subscriptions between this and Family Circle.

I always saw this magazine in the newsstands and never paid it much mind and sometimes gor it confused with other magazines for some reason. Amazon was offering a special on a subscription for it and I decided to take the chance because I love to read magazines as a way to decompress after a long day. Womans day offers informative articles that educate without the preachiness and verboseness of other magazines. Sometimes other magazines try to be so intellectual that they just manage to aggravate the reader. It' straight to the point and entertaining as well. It had real world articles about real world people. The recipes were excellent and the ads and inserts were not to distracting and annoying like other magazines. The only thing I am upset about is the fact that I missed out on years of enjoyment because I passed it up. Highly recommend it!!!

I love this magazine! Im 28 yr old and im so sick of magazines that focus all their attention on "How to please a man/how to get a man." Woman's Day is such a well rounded magazine, it has everything! Articles range from topics about health, recipes, inspiring stories, work out plans, beauty tips etc....seriously everything. I would definitely recommend woman's day to everyone, if you're thinking about subscribing do it, you won't regret it, it is money well spent!

Ms

MsI have noticed that Amazon.com charges more for magazines than if bought directly from the publisher. Amazon outrageously priced Ms. nearly DOUBLE what it costs if bought directly from msmagazine.com. Go directly to Ms. for a $25 yearly subscription.

There is certainly not a lack of interest on such important issues such as those mentioned in Ms. magazine because these issues affect all women all over the world. Whether it is on women's right for abortion, sex discrimination, exploitation of women and children, family and health acts or historical events on the women's movement (which I believe should really be corrected to mean a movement for all humanity because IT IS), Ms. magazine delivers the information that so many young women are lacking today in their social surroundings no matter if they be the suburbs or the slums.

I thank my literature professors who have taught me the wonderful female figures in literature that have proved women have power and deserve everyone's respect.

Imagine my utter shock when I came to a bookstore of considerable commercial success only to find Ms. magazine nowhere near the Women's Interest International section (which was instead completely packed with fashion and wieght loss magazines, I mean honestly, to give women this type of monotonous literary diet and then wonder why some of them are a bit flaky...) but rather in the Gay and Lesbian section. There is nothing wrong with this section, but I had no idea that one's sexual orientation had to fit this category for the bookstore to assume one had an interest in women's issues outside of makeup and shoes.

Practically livid to the point that I was shuddering a bit, I even moved a couple of the Ms.'s over to the women's interest section.

The store rep said that usually people who read Ms. tend to go towards the "ethnic and culture" section ( a section that Ms. was supposed to be in, but hmm...appeared to have been smack dab in the middle of gay and lesbian instead). I promptly told him, hey I"M A WOMAN, I HAVE INTERESTS OTHER THAN CLOTHES AND WHEN I CAME TO FIND MS. MAGAZINE I WENT TOWARDS WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD (SHOULD) BE THE APPROPRIATE SECTION--Women's Interest!

The next time you guys come into a store, show your support for Ms. mag. Look to see if the store even carries it and if they don't ask them why not and that you would love to see it on their shelves. If they do carry it, note where it is in relations to the Women's section, applaud them for their "astounding" assumption that Ms. should be relegated to a corner if that happens to be the case and tell the manager that you'd like to see if reach the bigger market of WOMEN IN GENERAL!!!!

As a long time reader of this magazine I've noticed that, with the purchase of Ms. Magazine by the Feminist Majority, it's on the rise again! You get everything from current events to To-Do lists to book reviews. It is a must read for every feminist out there! Don't trust me? Read it for yourself.

The very first issue of this magazine I read was their tenth anniversary issue from 1982, an issue my mother put away in my bottom drawer so I could read it when I was old enough. Looking back at that issue, which in turn looks back at older issues, and then looking at the issues since, it's dizzying to realise how far women have come in such a short period of time, and yet how far we still have to go before achieving full equality, rights, and representation. It's also downright scary to read some of these articles and updates about situations around the world and even in the United States itself; in many ways women in the U.S., as far as we still have to go, are far more fortunate than our sisters in places like Africa, Asia, the Mideast, and smaller towns in America. At the same time, such articles are not without hope, as they bring us the stories of women who are actively involved in making a difference in these other nations and smaller, more restricted, regions of America. I'm also glad that they no longer have ads in the magazine, and that they continue to run the "No Comment" segment on the back page, showcasing particularly shocking examples of sexist and misogynistic advertisements.

However, as other readers have noticed, this magazine can be too scholarly for some readers. While it's great to read these thoughtful in-depth articles about womens' struggles in other places around the world, sometimes you just want a change of pace and want something that's a little more lightweight, not so intensive in scope. People need to see that feminists aren't always so serious! I also agree that the magazine still has some way to go to reaching out to women of my generation and the younger generation (the tail end of Generation X and the older members of Generation Y), making these issues relevant to the third wave so that they won't dismiss the movement out of hand as being out of touch and outdated. Still, this is a great magazine, and I prefer it any day over something like Cosmo or YM.

Want Ms Discount?

Ms. is the most important women's magazine out there because it's about women as a whole, and not just diets and makeup and how to please a man. It's national and global news and spreads awareness without ever talking down to the reader. You may not always agree with it (I take particular offense at a 1993 cover story perpetuating the ritual abuse scare ... and the fact that it seemed like every woman who wrote in had been a victim of ritual abuse, a statistical impossibility) but Ms. encourages dialogue and feedback. I find it unfortunate that a reviewer of this magazine had a bad experience with the editor-in-chief and I hope she wrote back and demanded an apology for being rudely dismissed. You'll want to hold onto your issues long after you've thrown away those issues of "Jane." It's that worth it.

Better Homes & Gardens (1-year auto-renewal)

Better Homes & Gardens I purchased a one year subscription to BHG in December 2008, because they offered me a great deal while I was looking for a recipe online. After receiving about two months of my subscription, they started billing me for the next full year. Four months away from my renewal date, they informed me they had renewed me "for my convenience" and would be charging my debit card. I promptly canceled my subscription online in November 2009 (would run out in March 2010). From that point on, I received continual bills with threatening implications, like "account overdue" and "pay immediately." All my account information online stated my subscription was canceled and I owed nothing. The bills continued to escalate until in Feb. 2010, I searched high and low online to find a phone number to call. I was informed that the subscription department did not receive information online, and they did not know my subscription was canceled (likely story). I was informed that NOW they would cancel my subscription. OK, I'm finally done with these people. WRONG!!! Today, I get a threatening e-mail saying my account is past due, and pay my bill immediately. When I go online, my subscription is canceled, I owe nothing, I have no subscription activity. What a racket! I will NEVER, as long as I live, subscribe to this magazine again. I'm tired of the bait and switch, shady accounting, and threatening tactics toward a customer who paid their bill on time, and would have renewed if treated with some basic courtesy and respect. BHG, I am SO done with you!

I purchased a 1 yr. subscription to this magazine. After a year i decided not to renew my subscription because not usable content and over advertisements. After returning a bill marked "Do Not Renew",I am being hounded with past due notices!!! Today ,i sent a letter restating my request by certified mail.Maybe this will get someone's attention!!! I also told them i was writing this review on Amazon & sending a copy of the letter to my local BBB. AVOID BHG like a plague. t. Zacharenko

Better Homes and Gardens is really about easy living. Each issue includes articles about friends and family, gardening, interior design, building, family matters, food, health, and shopping. This is the magazine I reach for between work and errands because the articles are easy to read and brief yet interesting and inspiring. A few feature examples: window box herbs, dieting myths, cooking scones, what's new in family cars, and more. Better Homes also emphasizes family by incorporating activities for children or for the whole family from season to season. Better Homes is a good magazine for holiday ideas, too, with recipes and crafts to decorate your home and enjoy with your children. Although there are more sophisticated home magazines out there, I'm glad I have Better Homes lying around when I have a minute to relax.

We got these magazines because of the big name attached to it. I thumbed through the magazine and never found any articles. The only thing in it were ads.

I get better information through gardening/decorating blogs and definitely better service as people help each other on these sites. A huge waste.

This magazine has a lower cover price than some of its competitors, and makes up for it with a massive amount of ads. A few ads contain coupons, for those that like to cut those little things out (unfortunately they are hardly ever for anything I want !). The paper is also a lot thinner than the higher priced home/garden publications, and the photographs do not reproduce that well on it.

On the bright side, there are many nice décor ideas, and simply terrific recipes.

Taking the October 2003 edition as an example, Fall colors and produce are the theme. It has some ideas on how to display gourds, and an article on a community pumpkin patch, from the June planting by 140 neighbors and friends in a 6000 square ft. area, to harvest time.

There are numerous articles on remodeling, "Foolproof Potted Plants", on the joys of having hardy succulents in your home, and a lovely piece with lots of photographs on actor Peter Strauss' gorgeous Ojai, California garden.

The best article of all, is "The Magic of Soup", and some of these recipes are so good they might end up in your family for generations. They are simple to prepare, with easy to find ingredients, and will make a healthy, hearty meal for those frosty days ahead. Also included with the recipes is the preparation and cooking time, and nutritional statistics.

As someone who writes a lot of notes and cards, I appreciate the final page which is about letter writing, and how this vanishing form of communicating is good for the soul.

All things considered, this magazine gives good value, and is meant for those of us who do not live in a mansion or have hours to devote to a single recipe.

Jems : Journal of Emergency Medical Services

Jems : Journal of Emergency Medical ServicesI have subscribed to JEMS for more than 10 years now. It is the journal that all other EMS magazines are trying to be like. It has the nation's leaders in EMS contributing to articles. It has research, an annual survey of the biggest cities and their systems, an annual salary/workplace survey, reviews of equipment and vehicles, and it is involved in several annual conferences.

Lousy service there has been zero contact from the publisher as to whether they had received a subscription and when one might expect the subscription to begin

Not happy at all with the service on the magazine subscription.

Mes Premiers J Aime Lire - Print + CD-Rom

Mes Premiers J Aime Lire - Print + CD-RomMy 7-year-old daughter speaks French pretty well but is still learning to read. Mes premiers j'aime lire magazine is wonderful. Each issue comes with a short story that is also read on the accompanying CD (5-10 minutes in length). The stories are interesting and while written for children always have new vocabulary words that neither of us know. I enjoy listening to the CDs and my daughter listens to them over and over again! In addition to the main story, there are several "bandes dessinees" (comic strips) in each issue, a word search or other simple word games, and 2 pages of definitions for particularly challenging vocabulary. This is a wonderful addition to our regular French learning curriculum and highly recommended. It took almost 2 months before the first issue was delivered but now I get them regularly and in excellent condition.

Kentucky Explorer

Kentucky ExplorerThis is a great magazine that I purchased a subscription for my grandmother. She loves to read all the old stories and see the old pictures. It is amazing how they come up with so many pictures for each issue. Great for anyone who grew up around the midwest.

This magazine has been a godsend for people interested in Kentucky history, family histories, and so much more. It is now in its 23rd year of publication. And, for $2.50 cover price and some 110+ pages, an absolute bargain!! Sadly, the (small town) owned and published folk are having financial difficulties in this current economy. No surprise they should raise the price of this magazine to $5 or more an issue! It would be well worth it. The alternative is we will lose this great publication and, so much of it is contributed by readers. NO ADVERTISING. Help them out SAVE THEM.

I ordered this magazine and never received the magazine. I called their customer service and was treated very badly. The representative refused to make sure I got what I paid for and instead spoke very rudly to me and hung up. I have been cheated out of what I have paid for. I suggest that no one ever purchase a subscription to this magazine because they might not send you the product and they will be rude to you when you call to ask where your magazine is. Take it from me the employees of this company are not nice people and will rip you off as they have me. BEWARE!

Gastronomica

GastronomicaI am a professional cook who has an expansive collection of cookbooks and food magazine subscriptions, and Gastronomica, without a doubt, is in a class by itself. It's a magazine that relishes all aspects of food culture, from indepth explorations of particular cuisines to quirky analyses of fun foods. Topics as diverse as coca-cola, Vietnamese pho, the parrot eaters, egg creams, irradiated foods, tea drinking, and the all-American butter cake are just a few of the always interesting, usually provocative, and oftentimes entertaining articles you'll read.

This offbeat, classy magazine is for the thinking food lover. What a treat!

The "New Yorker" for food is often how I describe this magazine to colleagues and friends. The articles are well written, though occasionally idiosyncratic. It is one of two magazines I subscribe to (the other being the New Yorker.) If the alleys and byways of food are as interesting to you as the grand boulevards, then this magazine will appeal to you. It is not Gourmet or Martha Stewart (not that I have a problem with either of those titles, this magazine is just different), but if you enjoy food writing about varied topics from a slightly academic point of view this magazine would be a good choice.

today. The paper and print quality are such that holding it in

This is an ideal magazine for the food lover who is as fond of

Cricket

CricketMy mom set up a subscription to Cricket for me back in 1976 when I was in elementary school. I always loved reading and wasn't happy with the same old "See Spot Run" books. Mom saw that I was getting bored with the same old stuff and decided to give the magazine a try.

I got the first few issues and didn't really do anything with them. But once a rainy day came around, I decided to pick them up and give them a try. After that, I was hooked on the stories, the artwork, the games, and the contests the magazine runs each month. Each issue had its own theme and I always found the quality to be top notch. I found out Cricket had only came to be a few years earlier and went to the library with my dad to dig up some back issues.

I was introduced to such writers as Shel Silverstein, Lloyd Alexander, Walter De La Mare, Clifton Fadiman, Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg and William Shakespeare. I find myself coming back to Cricket time and again. I still have my original issues and hope to share them with my kids once they're older. They truly have a timeless quality.

I highly reccommend this magazine to parents whose children have expressed an interest in reading.

I received a gift subscription to this magazine from my aunt when I was 8 years old and kept every single issue I got in the mail until I turned 18 and my mother refused to keep paying for it (it is rather expensive). I have reread the hundreds of issues I have over and over and savored every possible detail. Because of this magazine, I became a happy appreciator of quality children's literature. Cricket doesn't talk down to children but respects their natural intelligence and curiosity. Fiction stories coexist with nonfiction, poems mingle with crosswords, beautiful illustrations appear next to photographs.

There have been numerous times when I (now 23) have spouted out random facts to my friends, only to admit (with a slightly pink face) that it was from an article in Cricket magazine that I read when I was 11. But this is a good example of the staying power of this magazine. It made me an English major. It made me a literature lover. It made me order my own subscription, in spite of being out of its targeted age range.

If you have a 7-8 year old that is starting to spend more time with books than with toys, or if you'd like your 7-8 year old to spend more time with books than with toys, consider ordering Cricket.

I was introduced to Cricket magazine through one of my teachers in early elementary school, and soon afterward my parents began a subscription for me. From then all the way up through middle school I devoured each issue cover-to-cover the moment it arrived. At first I found it a welcome challenge compared to the overly simple and mundane classroom books of the "Mac the cat sat on a mat" variety. Even after I had surpassed the magazine in my reading ability, I continued to enjoy it for the content of the stories. Even my mother loved to read it.

The magazine provides a great collection of well-selected stories that open up an entire world for the young reader, and each issue usually has a particular theme (i.e. the Middle Ages, horses, Chinese culture, food, etc.). Some of the stories are excerpted from longer pieces and some are short works in their own right. The magazine spans all genres of literature; includes both fiction, non-ficiton, and poetry; and addresses such important themes as culture, history, family and friends, growing up, and much more. Some pieces have serious and valuable morals, while others are just plain fun.

The magazine also offers book recommendations, a comic strip, a crossword puzzle, jokes, and contests for art, photography, fiction, and poetry. Moreover, each issue is beautifully illustrated. I believe the artwork in this magazine did much to inspire my own early artistic endeavors. I would highly recommend this magazine to parents and teachers alike. The stories are excellent material for young readers, and would also be great to read aloud to children. On the whole, this is a terrific blend of recreation and education! The makers of Cricket also offer other magazines for different age levels Spider, Ladybug, and Babybug for the younger ones, and Cicada for adolescents.

Read Best Reviews of Cricket Here

The Fong family is now a multi-generation Cricket household. I loved it as a kid and now my daughters (ages 7, 5 & 2) are enjoying every issue as well. Cricket wins on many levels. As a parent the stories, poems, games and cartoons deliver good, wholesome entertainment you won't mind reading to your kids again, and again, and again.... We save every issue and re-read our favorites regularly.

The different age level magazines Carus offers (Cricket, Spider, Ladybug and Babybug) make them great "independent reading" material as well.

Finally, I don't know of a single kid who isn't thrilled to receive real "snail mail" once a month!

Want Cricket Discount?

This is not the Cricket magazine you grew up with. I remember getting Cricket for years starting the late 70s/early 80s. I think my dad first got me a subscription when I was nine, and I received them until I left for college! I saved every single issue. And, to this day, I keep a print of John Singer Sargent's "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" hanging in the house I first saw it on the cover of a Cricket and loved it ever since. I can remember being so happy when a new issue would come in the mail. When my oldest turned nine, I subscribed to the magazine eager for him to have the hours of enjoyment that I had gleaned from it so many years ago. The first few issues were pretty good. Not the fabulous magazine I remembered but then again, that's typical of childhood memories. Then one day, he came to me, holding his latest Cricket and said, "mom what's a le5bian?"

Well it was quite a shock. There was a short story all about a girl in high school, struggling with her feelings and attractions to other girls. Her desire to dress like a boy, etc. This is fine but not in a magazine for kids age 9-12 for petes sake! I hope that I can teach my kids to love and welcome people regardless of race, religion, and orientation. It sounds cliche...but it's true. I don't even mind the not-so-subtle liberal agenda of this magazine (lots of short "stories" about the evils of pollution and global warming what fun!). What I do mind is a magazine for "children" introducing subjects that are in my opinion, more appropriate for teenagers. So, unless you want to waste your time previewing Cricket magazine each time your read it...or you feel this subject matter is OK for your grade school/middle school kid, don't subscribe. There are plenty of excellent sources of literature and poetry that are free from political agendas (both right and left), that have been read for generations of kids without having to have things like alternative lifestyles explained to them first.

I did consider continuing the magazine and just previewing each issue. But ripping out inappropriate stories smacked too much of censorship. I didn't mind the story. I minded the story for a child. Just as I don't let my kids watch certain "R" rated movies...I don't let them read certain subject matter. All in good time though. Can't we just let them enjoy being children for a few short years, without burdening them with the concerns of adulthood???

Mizz

MizzI love this magazine! It really keeps you updated on what's hot and what's going on. I think that it is aimed for slightly older girls like preeteens, but it really teaches you some valuble life lessons. In every issue, they give you little gifts to show they care. Mizz gives you tips on fashion, boys, games, and much more! The only thing I don't like about it are all the tiny pieces of junk at the back of each issue, in small print. I think they are Advertisments and privacy policies. You can really trust Mizz, because they are honest and share life experiences. Mizz cares. I have never read a better magazine, apart from American Girl. It is really cool!
