Animals & You

Animals & Youi ordered this and have not heard anything from the company or see any thing in the mail. Not to happy about it at the moment.

Can't boys care about animals as well? That seems kind of sexist/stereotyping to me. (I seriously doubt that Scotland Yard is going to investigate any parents letting their male offspring have access to this magazine, but still...)

Also in a previous issue where readers send in photos of their pets, I saw where a girl had sent in a photo of her pet marten, which is a cat-like relative of the weasel. The note accompanying the photo read something like: "This is my pet martin(sic)Squoodgy. Isn't he adorable?"

Umm, Okay. Maybe things are different in the UK regarding keeping martens as pets, but here in the States it requires big-time permission from wildlife officials and special licensing and all that.

And whether you need permission or not in the UK to keep a wild animal like a marten as a pet, he is still a wild animal. (The recent incident in Connecticut w/the chimpanzee viciously attacking his owner's friend can attest to that)

And one day "Squoodgy" (or whatever his name is) the Marten might take it upon his wild instincts to use his young mistress as something to sink his sharp little teeth into. Would he be so 'adorable' then?

American Cowboy (1-year auto-renewal)

American CowboyNice magazine. It is a bit high brow and uptown for my cowboy, but he likes it anyhow. It's real purty.

Purchased subscription May 22.

Was told it would be like Sep 29 before 1st issue arrived.

1st issue arrived July 3rd.

I gave this to my Father-in-law for his birthday and he loved it. A subscription I had purchased earlier was coming to my home and I took him a couple of copies and he (who never calls) called to tell me he had read them from cover to cover and wanted to make sure that his gift subscription would be coming to his home. The first one is to arrive between June 27 and July 5th. I sure hope he gets it in the mail.

I have subscribed to this magazine for two years now. It just keeps getting better!

The articles are very family friendly, the photos are beyond beautiful!

Everyone I share a copy with falls in love with this magazine. So far, five family members and friends have subscribed since seeing my copies.

If you live in the West, would like to someday, or love the more "Simple Times" when a handshake was all you needed for a business arrangement, you will LOVE this magazine!

This is a perfect gift as well!

I knew seeing the words "cowboy" that I was destined to see at least one guy free of all blemishes and signs of work, dressed up in fancy designer clothing, and topped off with a cowboy hat. I was right. That model shows up every couple of times in the magazine's ads. Kind of sad that most people think that is what they should look at when working on a ranch.

Luckily, the magazine does have articles of "traditional," hard-working cowboysold and young, male and female. The magazine itself is pretty slim with articles that are not very in-depth. There are definitely a lot of adverstisements and marketing of apparel is prominent unfortunately. Definitely not burtsing with crisp pictures of rodeos or cutting horses either, but there are adequate pictures to accompany every article. But for the price it is an interesting portal into the world and livlihood of the dying cowboy. The first issue was shipping to me two weeks after ordering, but I would still order it 4 weeks ahead of the time you want to receive it.

And despite my lackluster review of this magazine, I want to reassure people that you do learn a few things from this magazine. I've learnt already about famous cowboys, how to evaluate a horse's hocks, and even read about ranches in Hawaii that I never knew even existed. For the price, I'd suggest expanding your realm of knowledge of The West and subscribing to this magazine for at least a year.

Socialist Worker - England

Socialist Worker - England"Socialist Worker" will come as a shock to your system if you have ever read a corporate-owned daily newspaper. It certainly did for me in my early years as a student at the university of Melbourne.

Here, one sees clearly how so much government policy is directed at the simple aim of increasing profits for already extremely wealthy corporate executives, rather than to meeting the needs of the people who supposedly elect governments. Any reader with an open mind will become aware how governments are geared so strongly to ensuring there are no obstacles to increasing profits of the wealthy.

"Socialist Worker" also views this struggle of workers to achieve a genuinely democratic system in which the workers plan society to meet human need as totally international. Thus it understands that the USSR after Lenin, Vietnam, China, Cuba, North Korea and Yugoslavia were state capitalist countries that had nothing to do with socialism. Rather, they were/are ran on the same lines as the West, with the priorities being the enrichment of a tiny minority at the expense of the majority. This viewpoint is not easy to accept if you read something more moderate because they focus so much on the similar ideologies and the effects of a state-owned system found in Marx, but it still is worthwhile.

The major problem with this though-provoking and hard-edged newspaper is that it is so preachy as to be exaggerated and over-emotional, rather than being as rational as it argues a democratic socialist system to be. There is no effort to look at the actual lives of working people, which at least in Australia and Red America lead them to support extremely conservative viewpoints that have one similarity to "Socialist Worker": blaming media and academia for policies that do not serve the interest of the majority.

Nonetheless, "Socialist Worker" ought to make you reconsider if not change your perspective on politics forever with a few reads.

who ever wrote the editorial review must have gotten big bucks. I am a big big socialist, and have read the magizine, and think that the it is a load of crap!

Baseball Digest (1-year auto-renewal)

Baseball DigestThis magazine was a gift for my grandson, who really loves baseball! He received his first issue recently and told me he read it from cover to cover! Glad I ordered it for him.

This every-other-month magazine for the adult baseball purist who quivers for Spring Training to begin each year. The pages, printed on newspaper stock with limited black-and-white photos may not look too engaging, but the magazine has full statistics, opinions, lists, previews, prospects, etc. that allow the reader to keep tabs on players on all teams in both leagues. But my favorite parts are the oddities not obtainable in any other sports publication covering baseball. Idiosyncratic to a T, its editors don't toe the MLB line and you'll read anything from an independent piece on how the writers think the game can be improved to a proposal on revising how Elias Sports Bureau calculates some of its statistics. Every issue is laced with debatable topics for die-hard baseball fans without casting aspersions, like Mar/Apr's 2011 issue with a short list of the ten instances in which a player hit more home runs than first-base hits in a single season (Mark McGwire 5 times, Jose Bautista and Barry Bonds twice each) without explanation--even a mention of steroids. (And why Carlos Pena and Dave Kingman were on the list at all!?!) In the same 58-page issue, Rich Marazzi (rules consultant for 4 teams) details some of the weirdest plays of 2010 in a "Baseball Rules Corner," citing Alex Rios' "inside-the-jersey single" off 3B Brooks Conrad, the three-ball Xavier Paul walk issued by sleepy umpire Bruce Dreckman, and many more complicated fielding/running situations. While much of the writing is dry and sticks to the bare facts (rather than offering celebrity, psychological pieces on individual ballplayers), it is a table of dessert for the salivating, knowledgeable baseball fan. I guarantee that you won't find lists of "Most Runs Scored Before 35th Birthday, 1876-2010" or "Teams with Two Pitchers with 20 Saves Apiece" anywhere else. Or a detailed compendium of yearly deaths in the baseball world called "Necrology." On a different level, "Baseball Digest" is a fantastic resource for the fan (including an older kid) who wants all the teams' baseball stats and complete schedules, with info on rookies, etc. When I get each issue, I'm continually impressed with both what I've come to expect as well as the novel lists and articles that knock my socks off as I read each page!

This subscription is a renewal from last year for my 11 year old grandson. He is very active in sports, especially baseball. He says he loves the magazine and has every issue from last year so I renewed again just a few weeks ago. I am very pleased he is so involved in the magazine. He is an avid reader. I am not quite so pleased with the price. It is only 5 to 6 magazines per year for close to $40.

Your Cat

Your CatThis magazine surpasses every American cat magazine I've read. The oversize glossy magazine is well worth paying the extra price for overseas shipping. Each month contains cat health articles providing information from vets, alternative medicine practioners, and animal behaviorists. A breed cat is showcased every month and again, the photography is superb. You'll also find letters from cat owners in the UK, America, and abroad as well as fiction and non-fiction from contributors. Your Cat discusses vaccination, pet insurance, neutering, and features recommendations for cat products, many of which are also available here in the States. These magazines are valuable references -you won't be disappointed!

It is a little expensive, but this is the best cat magazine out there. I would give six stars if i could.

"Your Cat" is the best cat magazine ever created. Second place isnt even close. If you love cats this somewhat expensive mag is worth every penny.

I was hopeing it would be like Cat Fancy, and it is!! More health, stories, and other fun things about kitties. This magazine sticks out because it also lists many products. Not just toys for people that own cats, but things that help make life better. Sure I like the cat themed note cards, but I love the fence gaurds, new pet door designs, and especially the bed attachment. A great up beat vibe too. I think it is worth the money, and I will renew my subscription.

New York Daily News - City ed - Daily & Sunday

New York Daily News - City ed - Daily & SundayNabakov would not read the NY Times which he thought intellectual pretentiousness . Instead he loved the 'New York Daily News' with its yellow -page screaming scandalous cheap headlines.

I remember the Daily News in the old days when its competition was the 'Daily Mirror' which we preferred. Grantland Rice among others wrote for the 'Mirror'.

I look at the 'Daily News ' occasionallyin great part because of its hard-hitting patriotic American political line. I also like because it is very proIsrael.

Enjoy it nostagically with coffee and a doughnut at the Automat or Chockfull-oNuts.

Video Watchdog

Video WatchdogVideo Watchdog have been around for years and continue to produce a top quality home video magazine. Editor Tim Lucas has assembled an impressive staff of writers that are very knowledgable and clearly do their home work. There are some amazing in-depth reviews and feature articles that focus primarily on the horror and fantasy genres.

In addition, they also have a book review column that I've used numerous times to buy film books and a soundtrack column that covers obscure, hard-to-find albums as well as mainstream stuff -very good!

This is one of the few magazines I subscribe to and actually read cover-to-cover. High recommended!

If you REALLY love film (from ALL decades) and of ALL manner , treat youself to this awesome , highly respected and award strewn glossy , digest magazine . It comes to you six times a yr and is a TRUE page turner (even if you think you're not initially interested in a given article) . It's THAT well written . Brilliant .

Buy Video Watchdog Now

I've been buying "Video Watchdog" on and off for at least 15 years; in the past year I've finally succumbed to the lure of it completely and I'm glad I have. Every issue of this slick digest is a treasure-trove of serious, thoughtful (but never humorless or dry) reviewing, criticism and discussion about the wonderful worlds of science fiction, fantasy, and horror filmmaking as it appears on home video first on VHS and laserdisc, then on DVD, now increasingly on Blu-ray. Editor and regular writer Tim Lucas has an obsessive, geeky level of detail at his command and expects the same out of others on his staff. Films are typically reviewed for both technical merits both audio and video discussed in enough detail for most technophiles but simply enough for those of us with less interest in such things and for their qualities as art, though in the case of very famous films like, say, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY in its recent Blu-ray release the technical considerations usually are the bulk of the piece.

The format typically offers "Dog Bytes" short reviews of 200-500 words over a dozen pages or so at the beginning of the magazine and longer "DVDs" reviews ranging from about 700-2000 words near the end; Lucas also writes a 1-page editorial that often waxes philosophical or broadly political, there are book and CD (movie music usually) reviews, and in the last few years writer Ramsey Campbell has had a column that he usually devotes to something really, really obscure. Then there is the feature article, a lengthy review or interview, often in roundtable form; recent examples have been a long discussion of Dario Argento's MOTHER OF TEARS and an interview with Roger Corman about the Edgar Alan Poe adaptations he made in the 1960s.

Lest you say "but I'm not much interested in those kinds of films", the Watchdog often covers film noir, spaghetti and other westerns, classic cartoons and anime, and works of various major directors who have at least a little connection to weirdness and fantasy. You might not ever find a John Ford cover feature, but Welles, Bergman, Fellini, Tarkovsky or Godard aren't out of the question.

In short, my very favorite film magazine, and one of the few magazines I've ever read regularly cover-to-cover for years, and that has never diminished in quality.

This is one of the top publications that covers films and books on the horror/sci-fi genre. It continues to sort out and dig up the new releases of vintage, classic genre films. There are great reviews and evaluations about the release missing footage, tracks, etc., anything that could detract from the pleasure of viewing. The mag has an exceptional group of writers, reviewers, etal that keep the fan in mind. The issues remain great references and will remain in your collection for many years to come. If you haven't tried Watchdog do yourself a favor and pick up the next copy at your newstand/bookstore.
