Imaginefx

ImaginefxI am a regular U.S. reader of other Future Publishing art titles, and was overjoyed to see the first title on the newsstand of this fantastic magazine.

ImagineFX explores the digital science fiction, fantasy and anime genres through letters, interviews, portfolio expositions and fantastic tutorials. All issues also include pull-out artwork by the featured artist, as well as a companion DVD featuring files for the tutorials, artwork and software. Within the magazines pages one will find a wide assortment of styles and artists, including everything from tutorials by noted conceptual artist Ryan Church to explorations of gothic art by several fantastic artists which all serve to expand your creativity and help you along your own creative path.

On the minus side, most of us U.S. readers will be put off by the per-issue pricetag. But for those living in the U.K. (lucky!) or those U.S. readers willing and able to part with the money, this magazine is not to be missed!

This is a brilliant magazine!

I cannot stress enough just how helpful and user friendly this magazine is, with step-by-step tutorials, Q&A section, book and programme recommendations and beautiful art show casings. It covers a little bit of everything and comes with a DVD containing Demo's, art tutorials, Photo's and fonts and more. It's a magazine written for artists by artists and as a result I found my work improving greatly just from reading and practicing the tutorials in this magazine.

First, this is a great magazine.

Second, you're much better off buying a single issue and getting a subscription from the card inserts or even going to the ImagineFX site and ordering from there. Even with our lousy exchange price it's better than $178. Really bad price here.

Imagine FX is by far the most detailed magazine that I have seen that is completely loyal and devoted to Scifi and Fantasy Digital Art. Whether your a technician or an admirer, this book oozez with talent and technique. The magazine is not a pro's only book and they take a hands on approach to helping amateurs. None of the writers seem full of themselves. They all know they are in a liquid world of a digital medium where everyone learns from everyone. I highly recommend this magazine. It's more than average price tag is worth every penny, especially when every magazine comes packaged with a disc choc-full of demos, tutorials, photoshop brushes and source art. There is no other experience that comes near the likes of Imagine FX.

Rather this has more to do with the quality of the service I have received with Magazine Express, who is the company that distributes this magazine for amazon.

I do not at all recommend anyone subscribe to this magazine through Amazon, you are better off going straight through ImagineFX and subscribing via their website. This service is a whole lot of hassle and heart ache for nothing.

Long story follows:

My last months issue came very late about 2 weeks late, and I called and harassed Amazon and they were very nice and helpful. Magazine Express however took their sweet time and I got my magazine almost a week later (which by now was 3/4 into the month) and the magazine was damaged and missing the disc. So i complained yet again to Amazon employees, who were wonderful and not at fault here, and they said they would do their best to help me. I didn't receive word back from Magazine Express or Amazon until the 30th (which at that point I had already bought the magazine to enjoy), and I even bought the special edition because I wasn't sure I was even getting that. So yesterday (January 3rd!!!) I get both magazines, the december issue and the special edition, and not only are they not actual Imagine FX subscription magazines, with the big cover, they're regular store bought ones.

I call today to find out why I have received them when I asked on the 30th after so long that I didn't want the december issue and I wanted to be credited back my money for the month, since I already bought it after waiting so long. The guy tells me over the phone that "Oh the issues for that month come in at the end of the month". That is not true since i had received all of my first 3 months almost a week early, and also what's the point of having a subscription if I'm just going to get my issue super late and I could just go out and buy it at the store in the beginning of the month to enjoy it for that month.

This is madness!

Just go and get your subscription through ImagineFX website, that is what I am going to do when this subscription runs out.

I have yet to receive my January issue. I guess I get to enjoy it at the end of the month.

Buddhism Today

Buddhism TodayFirst, let me say that I'm encouraged that Buddhism has a magazine dedicated to its study, and that the magazine is low in ads. I greatly appreciate the effort involved in creating this.

My concern with the issue of Buddhism Today I read through (Fall-Winter 2009) came right away on page 5. I had in my hands "part 2" of the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas. I am generally bothered by magazines that provide multi-part content. Imagine the scene. I am sitting down with a nice cup of tea, preparing to relax with wonderful content, and I start reading "We have now completed the preliminaries, the seven mind trainings." Wait we did? What preliminaries? Right from the start I get the sense that I've missed out, that it would be fruitless to even try reading this article and "catch up". It's not a good feeling to get at the very beginning of a magazine you were looking forward to reading.

Still, I begin reading the article. The "first" entry in here is the Eighth Verse. I am told that "The teaching of this verse is for practitioners of the lowest category" but I have no idea what the lowest category means. Is that me? Is it practitioners who have been "acting inappropriately" until now? Subsequent verses also refer to things I am unsure of. Maybe it was explained in the previous issue, which I do not have.

Well, OK. On to the next article. This one is "What Happened in Kalimpong?" The intro to the article says "Here I offer a new awareness, beyond the reflections published earlier (1)." The (1) apparently refers to a journal he published in 2008 that has the base story. So now not only do I need to get the previous issue of this magazine, but I also have to get this book as well in order to understand the current issue.

We do then get to self contained articles with interesting content and lovely photos. I like that the image on page 28 is of a dark skinned woman, showing that all people of all backgrounds can enjoy Buddhism. I enjoy the writing style, and the layout is lovely. But the magazine is only 45 pages long and if you take out the table of contents and other similar pages, there isn't that much left which was able to be read as is.

If they really couldn't afford to put the entire Bodhisattva article in one issue for some reason, I would at least have done a substantial effort at summarizing the entire first article so that newcomers didn't feel quite as lost.

It makes me hesitant to pick up any future issues. Which is a shame, because the other articles were enjoyable.

Best magazine available of its kind. The articles are very insightful and really helpful. I have nearly all of the issues, and they just keep getting better and better. A full set is like having a library about Buddhism.

For those wanting a modern view on Buddhist teachings this magazine is it. It is put together very well, and has more articles than advertisements...a rare occurance in magazines today.

This is an excellent resource for Buddhist teachings, mostly within the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism but also accessible to anyone who simply has an interest in Buddhism in today's world. Very nicely done.

This is a good read if you are interested in the world view of Buddhism. Mostly interviews and politics. It doesn't add anything to my practice of the way. But I will probably renew it because I did learn stuff.

Track & Field News

Track & Field NewsI have been getting Track and Field news since 1972. This magazine dates back to the early 1950's and is the standard for track and field reporting and commentary from a magazine. They are very detailed in all aspects of the sport, experts from around the world compile the records, the meets, the participants, enlightened commentary from some of the Track and Field world's greatest authorities. They have records that date back to the Olympics from the turn of the 20th century at least. Anyone who is interested in this sport must get this magazine. I say this honestly, there is no better magazine in the world on reporting on this sport than this magazine.

I was inspired to write this because another reviewer gave this magazine a zero rating because he hadn't received his subscription yet. I can understand his frustration, but it has nothing to do with the magazine.

I've subscribed to Track and Field News for years and it is excellent. If you are a fan of the sport I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir as you probably subscribe to it already. I can't imagine someone being a fan and not subscribing to this magazine.

So for me it has it all: Great photography, interesting articles, detailed event reporting, schedules of future events, statistics regarding records and performances.

If you're not a track fan this is not for you; if you are this is a must have.

Antique Trader (1-year)

Antique TraderThis magazine is published 43 times a year, with anywhere from 48 to 64 pages per issue. Many of the issues hold exclusive excerpts from Krause Publications antiques and collectibles books on subjects like depression glass, vintage fishing lures, Hummel figurines, Santa dolls ... the list goes on and on. Regular columns appear on fine art, the antiques market, antique furniture, free subscriber appraisals, antique dolls, silver care, letters to the editor and more! As well as relevant news on antiques and collectibles. The Antique Trader website has a free magazine sample (in PDF format) available for download on their homepage.

Makes me want to go to an estate sale, flea market, boot sale etc. I did find out about an antique clock that I received, the clock is worth more than I thought.

This is my favorite antiques magazine because it's different than any other tons of research, news and smart, funny columns. It has cool features on really unusual antiques like glasshouse whimsies, Scalp Level School art and industrial antiques. This is for people who are interested in collecting, selling and decorating with antiques. It is much different now than it was in 2005 and is a really fun read!

I'm a little disappointed I purchased this for my dad for father's day I thought it was a magazine but it's actually a 6 page flyer with 3 holes on the side to put in a binder. I just think it's a little pricey for a flyer but he said he enjoys it and the information is good.

Columbia Journalism Review (1-year auto-renewal)

Columbia Journalism ReviewTo be adequately informed, it's necessary to scrutinize the journalism through which we see the world. Columbia Journalism Review contributors strive to equip readers for such an examination. Their on-line "Who Owns What", which catalogs the ownership of each media outlet, is an example of the valuable work CJR does. Highly recommended!!!

This is an excellent magazine. It is published by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and its standards are high, despite the remarks by the previous reviewer. RE: Nvasky, ignore the ad hominem attack. Executive Editor Michael Hoyt describes Navasky's role as "99% financial," saying "he doesn't push anything editorially," and that he has "learned how to get a small magazine of ideas into the black, and he's trying to come up with some strategies for us." CJR makes some articles available for free on its web site, so check them out and see for yourself.

In a seemingly dying field, CJR reminds you that not all is lost. Excellent insight into who's left, what's new, and where the industry is going in the 21st century.

Fretboard Journal

Fretboard JournalFinally, a killer looking instrument magazine with interesting articles about players and collectors. This mag covers a pretty wide range of topics--interviews with players, builder interviews, some historical/esoteric stuff, etc. Even has some artsy photo spreads of instruments themselves. But I loved every page of the first issue. This is mag is stunning! No tab or instruction but plenty of entertaining, smart articles.

I love it. Even my wife read it!

Most magazines, and guitar magazines included, are primarily mediums to distribute advertising. This is NOT one of those. While it does have ads, they are aimed at the knowledgeable, not the impetuous. FBJ has well written, insightful articles about the music, and the people and instruments which make it. FBJ, as its name implies, explores not just guitars, but all fretted instruments, which allows a great expansion of many readers' perception of the art. The articles are long enough to wonderfully cover the subject, a refreshing change from most periodicals where article size cuts down on ad space and articles are often designed to sell advertiser's product. It explores the artists and instruments of the past and the present. It's one-on-one interviews are exceptional. Pictures are high quality, relevant, and large. Most of all, FBJ carries the reader into the very personal world of instrument making and playing like no other source will, and it delivers four times a year. An exceptional magazine by, for, and about an exceptional group of musicians and instruments.

Minerva - International Review of Ancient Art and Archaelogy

Minerva - International Review of Ancient Art and ArchaelogyMinerva is one of my favorite mags. I studied archeology in graduate school and classical civ in undergrad and I find it a fun way to maintain a flavor of both. I'm also an artist and I've always been facinated by ancient art forms. Most of the items shown are museum quality artifacts, but I get great ideas for my own work from these issues. The articles tend to be obscure for casual readers, but I find them informative and interesting.

Do yourself a favor, and buy this magazine subscription directly from the Minerva magazine website. You will pay $50 versus the $71.71 on Amazon for 6 issues. Sorry, Amazon! Maybe you will lower your prices.

Buy Minerva - International Review of Ancient Art and Archaelogy Now

I am a sculptor, and this is my only magazine subscription. I stopped buying U.S. magazines because of the art speak, and the U.K magazines have now gone international. This is the only magazine which I have ever read religiously from cover to cover. I get to see things that get missed in art magazines, and the object's context is always considered. It is also mind broadening, as I see images that I would never see anywhere else. A major benefit of the magazine is the book reviews. I have bought several international books based on reviews in Minerva, and have never been disappointed. An associated resource is the catalogs from Royal Athena gallery in New York at $5 each, they are a steal.

slightest intent of sarcasm, I believe a sailing ship would be faster. WHERE IS IT?

Want Minerva - International Review of Ancient Art and Archaelogy Discount?

I cannot understand for the life of me why anything should take 12-16 weeks to begin getting a subscription. I got this for my uncle who is a true history buff and it will take 3-4 months for him to get his 1st magazine. I tried to buy a copy of this at one of the book stores or stands to show him what he would be getting and could find it nowhere. I had to print the page from Amazon to get anything. This is a wonderful, high caliber magazine and it shouldn't take this long to get. Can't something be done about this?

International Artist

International ArtistEach issue of this 'magazine' is full of exquisite art, displayed in amazing color. From beginning to end, it is a feast for the eyes. If that were all International Artist contained, it would still be a treasure, but each issue also has numerous demonstrations by some of the finest artists in the world. I have read all of the usual artist magazines and have subscribed to several but I haven't seen this quality of art or art technique articles in any of them. It really is astonishing. As I read each issue I wonder if they can possibly maintain the content quality, but each new issue seems to surpass the last. My only regret is that the magazine comes out only six times a year. But it is well worth waiting for. If you are an artist, don't miss this. If you simply enjoy fine artwork, I think you will be equally impressed.

By the way, this publisher also has a line of art instruction books that are some of the finest I have seen. You can find them on Amazon as well as at the publishers web site. I have four right now, and have my sights on several more.

Internanatial Artists magazine is the best magazine on the shelf bar none. I've read many other artist magazines time and time again, but haven't found anything that compares to this jewel. It provides great illustrations as well as wonderful perspectives that are enjoyable as well as inspiring for your reading pleasure. Not only does it inform, it also provides technical and creative details and images in various media for most artist needs in bold beatiful color. This is a truly a winner!

Buy International Artist Now

I think that International Artist is the best art magazine on the market. It is always full of beautiful and inspiring paintings and consistently provides articles about a variety of mediums. International Artist also publishes some of the best art instruction books on the market.

Read Best Reviews of International Artist Here

This is my favorite artist magazine and has been for some time. I much prefer it to Artist, if only for covering so many media each issue. Admittedly, it is not the best option for the beginner, although some of the books published by International Artist are good for novices or those picking up a new medium. And, like any magazine I've ever read, some issues are better than others. The reproductions are of a consistently high standard.

Want International Artist Discount?

I used to be a subscriber and relished the one or two exciting articles each month from experimental artists (like Mary Ann Beckwith, Ann Davidson, etc.). Yes, the rest of the art was too realistic, but at least there was usually one good gem each issue.

Unfortunately, over the past couple of years they have gotten lazy. Instead of searching for cutting-edge artists doing exciting work, they've abdicated their role to fillers from the Portrait Society of Boring Paintings, a columnist who only wants to sell you stuff on his website, and pages and pages of ads for DVDs and books that should be on their website. And can anyone can tell one Harley Brown pastel portrait from another? Repetition is one thing, but an editor's job is to know when a column has run its course and get in some fresh blood. Maybe the editorial staff need some fresh blood?

If I sound annoyed, it's because IA used to be a smashing magazine. I still have the first 50 or so back issues and have bookmarked many a feature from the good old days when the editors had more eclectic taste.

But if you like realism, portraits, and so on, you'll probably enjoy this magazine. (Thank goodness Artist magazine is featuring more abstract and experimental work this past year.)
