Men's Fitness (1-year auto-renewal)

Men's FitnessI've been a longtime subscriber to Men's Fitness. As one of the other reviewers said, this magazine used to be better. It still has a great deal of workout, diet and fitness information, but it's not as good as it once was. I think the magazine is losing its focus a bit as each issue does seem to have more and more about sex, pornography, etc.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is because a lot of the workout and fitness information is still very useful (otherwise I would give it fewer), but I used to feel this magazine was worthy of 5 stars.

I know that overall men's fitness should include sex (and lots of it) but I tire of hearing it from a magazine whose main focus should be fitness, wellness, and health. I'm not purposing to eliminate it completely, because as we all know sex sells, I just saying minimize it! I can read all about sex in Playboy! I would suggest buying Men's Healthit's a better read.

I've been a subscriber to Men's Fitness since late 1999. In fact, I still go back and use their year-long workout routines from 2000, 2001 and 2002 when I feel like I've hit a rut, or am coming back after a layoff.

Unfortunately, the publication has changed over that time, and sadly, not for the best. Where I was once able to read the magazine from cover to cover and get lots of information that I felt made the issues valuable to keep, since I could go back and always find something to tweak my workouts with, these days, I just don't see the same quality. Not only in the workouts provided, but in the other articles and the magazine itself.

For example, over the last 4 years or so, when they started to put celebrities on the cover, LL Cool J is one of the VERY few that they have managed to discuss any type of a workout with that really goes further than the standard, "Oh, I do weights 3 days per week and cardio 4 days, blah blah blah" repetitive answer. Instead, the writers focus on their movie, their CD, or how they feel about the sport they play. If they put Ryan Reynolds on the cover, then I want to know what his workouts are like; sets, reps, what he does on different days of the week and so on. Not how he feels about whatever role he's playing in his new movie, not who he's dating/married to, not the kind of clothes he wears or what he drives, which is typical of the type of interviews and articles that appear issue after issue in the magazine today.

In a nutshell, Men's Fitness appears to be drifting away from the informative magazine that I feel that it used to be so much so, that for several years, I held it in higher regard than Men's Health to something resembling Maxim. In other words, a magazine that I will flip through once, and forget that I have it an hour after I've read it. And that is really too bad, considering that it used to be such a high quality magazine at one point in time.

This magazine has great covers and gets your attention right away. I was was drawn to the cover because it claims to have great article inside, but the articles are very short and pointless. It was a good magazine few years back but now it just seems like they don't know what their doing.

I ordered this and it seemed to take a while to get the first magazine... Then when it showed up I got two the same day. I was pleasantly surprised to see that MF had changed their format and I had a chance to read the first and second issues. They are full of information and have a good division between the sound bite articles and articles that go into a good depth on a person or health issue.

Overall a good read if you take the time to read it.

Communication Arts

Communication ArtsI love this magazine and think it's a great subscription to have for any designer! I do think that Amazon should have a lower price however. The communication arts website has a much cheaper price for current students. I also wish amazon would have a kindle version of this magazine! I love it, but the magazines are big and bulky and I'd love to be able to take it on the go. Otherwise, it is well worth the subscription!

Subscribed here thinking this would be a much easier way to manage it each year. Its really no saving over ordering direct from the magazine. only problem is that i entered my subscription on Nov. 9, 2011, expecting first issue 60 or so days later. Won't get first issue until March 9, 2012. seems a tad long to wait.

Buddhism Today

Buddhism TodayFirst, let me say that I'm encouraged that Buddhism has a magazine dedicated to its study, and that the magazine is low in ads. I greatly appreciate the effort involved in creating this.

My concern with the issue of Buddhism Today I read through (Fall-Winter 2009) came right away on page 5. I had in my hands "part 2" of the 37 Practices of Bodhisattvas. I am generally bothered by magazines that provide multi-part content. Imagine the scene. I am sitting down with a nice cup of tea, preparing to relax with wonderful content, and I start reading "We have now completed the preliminaries, the seven mind trainings." Wait we did? What preliminaries? Right from the start I get the sense that I've missed out, that it would be fruitless to even try reading this article and "catch up". It's not a good feeling to get at the very beginning of a magazine you were looking forward to reading.

Still, I begin reading the article. The "first" entry in here is the Eighth Verse. I am told that "The teaching of this verse is for practitioners of the lowest category" but I have no idea what the lowest category means. Is that me? Is it practitioners who have been "acting inappropriately" until now? Subsequent verses also refer to things I am unsure of. Maybe it was explained in the previous issue, which I do not have.

Well, OK. On to the next article. This one is "What Happened in Kalimpong?" The intro to the article says "Here I offer a new awareness, beyond the reflections published earlier (1)." The (1) apparently refers to a journal he published in 2008 that has the base story. So now not only do I need to get the previous issue of this magazine, but I also have to get this book as well in order to understand the current issue.

We do then get to self contained articles with interesting content and lovely photos. I like that the image on page 28 is of a dark skinned woman, showing that all people of all backgrounds can enjoy Buddhism. I enjoy the writing style, and the layout is lovely. But the magazine is only 45 pages long and if you take out the table of contents and other similar pages, there isn't that much left which was able to be read as is.

If they really couldn't afford to put the entire Bodhisattva article in one issue for some reason, I would at least have done a substantial effort at summarizing the entire first article so that newcomers didn't feel quite as lost.

It makes me hesitant to pick up any future issues. Which is a shame, because the other articles were enjoyable.

Best magazine available of its kind. The articles are very insightful and really helpful. I have nearly all of the issues, and they just keep getting better and better. A full set is like having a library about Buddhism.

For those wanting a modern view on Buddhist teachings this magazine is it. It is put together very well, and has more articles than advertisements...a rare occurance in magazines today.

This is an excellent resource for Buddhist teachings, mostly within the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism but also accessible to anyone who simply has an interest in Buddhism in today's world. Very nicely done.

This is a good read if you are interested in the world view of Buddhism. Mostly interviews and politics. It doesn't add anything to my practice of the way. But I will probably renew it because I did learn stuff.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks(****1/2) Bookmarks (A Reader's Guide to the Best in Books) is the newest magazine for bibliophiles in the market. Since its preview/debut issue in Summer 2002, Bookmarks has released 10 issues featuring a mixed bag of classics and contemporary authors like Steinbeck, Dickens, Garcia Marquez, Virginia Woolf, Waugh, Austen, Morrison, Naipaul, Potok, Faulkner, Potok, Vonnegut, and Philip Roth.

The bi-monthly publication has book reviews and selections for readers of all ages. The "Book by Book" section will features a detailed coverage on works of a specific author, suggestions on introductory books to the author, a specific genre of literature, or a particular time period. The currents issue (May/June 2004) features Leo Tolstoy and Literary Voices of the Pre-Civil Rights Era, with a look at classic works by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, and James Baldwin.

More than half the pages of the magazine focus on navigating the ever-expanding sea of reading: new books, now-in-paperback books, and reader-favorite recommendations. This is by far the most useful and timesaving resource for me to search for my next reading selection. The "Selections" allows me to preview staff favorites from among the most highly rated books in an issue (usually 4 stars and above).

The "New Book Guide" features book reviews separated into genres like spot, literary fiction, crime, sci-fi, general non-fiction, biography, history, science, and arts. It is therefore structured to find easily the information about a particular book most appealing and relevant to me. Each book featured in this section has a critical summary. The books covered fall into three basic categories: highly rated books that received many reviews, highly rated books that received less comprehensive coverage, and lower rated books that were widely reviewed and well-publicized. That way general popularity of the books, as well as the collective but disparaging critics may be accommodated. Highly rated books maybe balanced with the less publicized or lower-rated books. After all, it is frustrating to apply ratings to any works of literary arts in the absence of myriad choices. To accommodate such need, supplemental reading is provided.

Bookmarks strives to accommodate palates readers of all ages and genres. In any given issue readers will find, in addition to the new releases and talk-of-the-town books that perch on bestseller list, works of classics. I find the inclusion on works of classics and their authors very appealing to me. Bookmarks has simply topped my favorite periodical list for the year and become my reading companion.

You know that expression "so many books, so little time"? After reading a few issues of "Bookmarks" you will be exposed to so many wonderful books and authors that you will be chanting this as a mantra. It is obvious from the first page of this bimonthly magazine that the editors love books as much as their readers do. It provides balanced coverage of books by bringing together reviews from many other publications, giving you the opportunity to see comments from glowing to scathing so that you can decide for yourself whether a book is worth reading. There are many innovative regular features: "What One Book" takes a topic such as yoga or jazz and asks the experts to suggest books about it; "If..." poses a hypothetical situation and then provides reading suggestions; "Have you read?" provides recommendations by readers. Every issue highlights a veteran author and provides an overview on their writing career and a bibliography. If you only want to subscribe to one magazine for bibliophiles, this should be it!

I enjoy reading about books almost as much as I enjoy actually reading the books themselves. The hunt is everything. I totally savor the acts of studying and evaluating and planning for my next read. This magazine enhances the experience. It talks about new books, classic books, categories of books, book ratings, editorial book reviews all at great length. There are, what seems like, zillions of reviews that give you enough information to know whether or not you should take a closer look.

This is the best book review source that I have found. This month they are talking about the books of Fitzgerald. Can't wait to dive in!!

I used to get "book" magazine-I was terribly disappointed when they stopped publishing. I also started to get the riverside review, but then that went out. I haven't been having good lucky lately with the book review magazines. Since every book review magazine I've subscribed to have subsequently gone out of business, I picked up bookmarks at the local library, instead of subscribing to it. Seriously, it's the best book review magazine I've seen in a long time. They offer caplet reviews of new books, as long as the reviews written by major publications. The other great feature is their dedication to older, classic authors and their works. For example, the May issue features Tolstoy, with many pages dedicated to background of him and his works. They offer works to start with and then follow-up reading. They also break down the reviews by themes, and the reviews use a star system. I'd recommend this subscription to anyone who's interested in learning about new books, but not willing to buy (or borrow) unless they know they're good. Hopefully, I haven't jinxed this magazine, too, and that they'll be around for a long time!

I have been getting this magazine for two years now and always find at least one book that I simply "must" have. I only wish it came out every month instead of every two as sometimes when I go into a "independent" bookstore such as Boulder BookStore or Tattered Cover, I can find newer books that haven't been reviewed in the magazine. I would also like more reviews for young readers not necessarily babies/etc, but for teens. This magazine is tons better than the one Barnes and Nobles wants you to subscribe to with their membership.

Cuisine Et Vins De France

Cuisine Et Vins De FranceI have subscribed to this magazine for many years (via their own website (English version)) and I love this publication. Some of the ingredients may be hard to find outside France but having been lucky to work there for several years at least I know what they are! Many of the recipes are typically French and as such would be hard to find elsewhere. The articles are informative and highlight the differences in the culinary styles from region to region.

If you like France and love food, this magazine will be a joy from cover to cover.

i often get recipe ideas from this magazine and its website. haven't had a bad one yet.

National Geographic

National GeographicWho doesn't know National Geographic? Despite the term 'national' in the title, this is a publication that has an international reputation, and has set its sights on exploring every inch of the globe, and beyond. School children everywhere use National Geographic as a resource. It is a periodical, however, that goes far beyond the school library. Interesting, erudite, broad-ranging and fascinating (in addition to being, dare I say it, educational), National Geographic has something for everyone.

Articles involve history, culture, sociology, biology, architecture, archaeology, and physical science in addition to the trademark item, geography. Recent issues have included articles on archaeology of the Indus Valley, earthquakes in Turkey, Samoan culture, jellyfish, and dinosaurs. National Geographic has a knack for combining the timely with the timeless to make each issue interesting from a current events perspective (recent articles on the Golan Heights and touring London show this) as well as being worthy of retaining for future reference by combining history and other details.

Coupled with the articles, National Geographic has fantastic photography. In the June issue, there is a 'family photo' that was taken at the annual photographic seminar in Washington, D.C., in which more than half of the regular contributors to the magazine were present and photographed around the great seal of National Geographic. According the caption:

'The 47 men and women shown have collectively logged some 700 years taking pictures for this magazine alone. They've photographed roughly 715 articles, and at a current average of 29,000 frames shot per story, that works out to about 20.7 million images.'

Authors and photographers for National Geographic are perhaps one of the most diverse lots of people working for any periodical. From urban to rural, civilised to exotic to remote and desolate locations; from peaceful and happy events to battlefield and disaster situations; from home life to professional life to religious life and beyond, these women and men have covered almost every aspect of the world (and beyond!). Photographic and journalistic excellence is a hallmark of this magazine, and it shows in every issue.

But the maps! What about the maps? Oh, yes, this is perhaps the distinguishing feature of National Geographic, something that is also well-known from school days. Teachers always loved to put National Geographic maps up on the walls, and issues continue to include the most up-to-date maps of countries, physical features, even the moon, planets, and star systems.

The National Geographic Society was founded in 1888 as a nonprofit scientific and educational organization, and has in that time supported more than 6500 explorations and research projects. They have also included in more recent times to support students with scholarships. For instance, since 1993 they have given a scholarship each year to a British student in conjunction with the British Cartographic Society, in recognition of the outstanding mapmaking student in the UK. This will help continue the tradition on National Geographic.

GREAT MAGAZINE BUT ...

I can not stress to you enough not to buy this on Amazon through Synapse Services, Inc. You will not get your magazine, you will not receive a refund, and you will waste your time and money! Flush your money, it's more effictive way to get rid of it.

I purchased NG for my father in June 6th 2010 as a renewal to his subscription which was expiring on Feburary 2011. I just got a last chance renewal from NG, they say my subscription is expiring? It should be good till Feburary 2012! They said they did receive an order from Synapse on June 10th but then it was canceled by Synapse in July?

NG was nice enough to give me Synapse's phone number 877-813-0320. Be sure to press 0 and go for the agent, even though it won't help you, the supervisor can't help you either!

I just got off a long phone call with Synapse Services, Inc. they canceled the subscription for no reason on their end. They never fullfilled the request? They say they refunded, but there is no refund, Amazon still has it listed active? I just wanted the magazine, they had already received payment why did they cancel it? They can't tell me? I have never been so disatisfied with a company in my life. I will be contacting Amazon, contacting the Credit Card company for payment with no service, BBB for failure to produce service, etc. I will also issue a invoice to them for my wasted time!

Basically what this company does is when they receive the actual payment from Amazon they then call up NG and cancel your subscription so they don't have to pay NG and they keep the money. Wow; what a great money making business!!!

I bought National Geographics for my elderly father over 3 months ago. To this day no magazines have arrived. Tired of waiting and after a phone call from him, I barred the wait to talked to someone in NG. They told me that going through Amazon takes at least 3 months!!! and that they have shiped my order two day ago and it will take 2 weeks in transport. If I go directly through them it takes 1 months.

I will no longer subscribe to National Geographic. This year we started getting unsolicited junk from either National Geographic or their "partner" companies masquerading as National Geographic and then billing us for the DVDs, maps, etc. I expressed my concerns in a letter to National Geographic about the problem and they did not bother to contact me. Of course now they are sending these bogus bills to their "collection department." No more National Geographic magazine EVER!

Want National Geographic Discount?

As others have stated, probably not a great idea to order Nat Geo through Amazon. I placed my order in June and received a cancellation e-mail from them today. If Amazon can't fill the subscriptions at this price, they shouldn't be offering it. Great magazine, just don't order it here.

Wild Fibers

Wild FibersWhat a beautiful magazine about both plant and animal fibers. The stories and amazing photography in each issue makes each one unique and certainly a treasured source for information. I do look forward to the knitting pattern in each issue and enjoy looking for the different fibers that the designer has used.

"Wild Fibers" is a quarterly but it is well packed and will take the whole quarter to go through and apply.

There are unique patterns, and stories. This is as much about animal husbandry as it is about spinning. I actually apply much of the information to weaving. There are lots of great ads that show you what you are missing; it is sort of like a Christmas catalog. This magazine should be more considered as a professional trade magazine vs. a fluff grocery store magazine.
