In-Fisherman (1-year auto-renewal)

In-FishermanThis is truly the Journal of Freshwater Fishing. It is multi-species in its approach covering bass, catfish, walleye, musky, panfish, stripers even Carp! All articles cover the "hows" of a given technique but I.F. goes into the "whys' behind the success of particular technique(s). Through high quality illustrations & explanations you learn about fish behavior and preferred/optimal habitat. Then they explain environmental factors that affect the fish species and how that in turn should influence your approach to catching them. Every article can be read multiple times with new info gleaned from each and every pass. IMO it is a "must have" for all anglers!

I bought this subscription for my 14 year old son. He's not a big reader but loves this magazine.

This magazine contains lots of useful information for the fisherman. Tactics and rigging are described for nearly all types of gamefish, and updates on the latest equipment and techniques are discussed thoroughly. This is a 'how to' resource as opposed to many fishing mags that merely show off the trophies.

Men's Fitness (1-year auto-renewal)

Men's FitnessI've been a longtime subscriber to Men's Fitness. As one of the other reviewers said, this magazine used to be better. It still has a great deal of workout, diet and fitness information, but it's not as good as it once was. I think the magazine is losing its focus a bit as each issue does seem to have more and more about sex, pornography, etc.

The only reason I give it 4 stars is because a lot of the workout and fitness information is still very useful (otherwise I would give it fewer), but I used to feel this magazine was worthy of 5 stars.

I know that overall men's fitness should include sex (and lots of it) but I tire of hearing it from a magazine whose main focus should be fitness, wellness, and health. I'm not purposing to eliminate it completely, because as we all know sex sells, I just saying minimize it! I can read all about sex in Playboy! I would suggest buying Men's Healthit's a better read.

Buy Men's Fitness (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I've been a subscriber to Men's Fitness since late 1999. In fact, I still go back and use their year-long workout routines from 2000, 2001 and 2002 when I feel like I've hit a rut, or am coming back after a layoff.

Unfortunately, the publication has changed over that time, and sadly, not for the best. Where I was once able to read the magazine from cover to cover and get lots of information that I felt made the issues valuable to keep, since I could go back and always find something to tweak my workouts with, these days, I just don't see the same quality. Not only in the workouts provided, but in the other articles and the magazine itself.

For example, over the last 4 years or so, when they started to put celebrities on the cover, LL Cool J is one of the VERY few that they have managed to discuss any type of a workout with that really goes further than the standard, "Oh, I do weights 3 days per week and cardio 4 days, blah blah blah" repetitive answer. Instead, the writers focus on their movie, their CD, or how they feel about the sport they play. If they put Ryan Reynolds on the cover, then I want to know what his workouts are like; sets, reps, what he does on different days of the week and so on. Not how he feels about whatever role he's playing in his new movie, not who he's dating/married to, not the kind of clothes he wears or what he drives, which is typical of the type of interviews and articles that appear issue after issue in the magazine today.

In a nutshell, Men's Fitness appears to be drifting away from the informative magazine that I feel that it used to be so much so, that for several years, I held it in higher regard than Men's Health to something resembling Maxim. In other words, a magazine that I will flip through once, and forget that I have it an hour after I've read it. And that is really too bad, considering that it used to be such a high quality magazine at one point in time.

This magazine has great covers and gets your attention right away. I was was drawn to the cover because it claims to have great article inside, but the articles are very short and pointless. It was a good magazine few years back but now it just seems like they don't know what their doing.

I ordered this and it seemed to take a while to get the first magazine... Then when it showed up I got two the same day. I was pleasantly surprised to see that MF had changed their format and I had a chance to read the first and second issues. They are full of information and have a good division between the sound bite articles and articles that go into a good depth on a person or health issue.

Overall a good read if you take the time to read it.

Blaze Magazine

Blaze MagazineI have been getting Blaze magazine for the last 2 years. It is totally awesome and I love it. I have learned so much about horses. The contests are great too, I have won some prizes. I recommend you read Blaze if you love horses like I do. They also have a really cool website and I've found penpals there.

I bought this for my 11 year old granddaughter and she reads it cover to cover. Sometimes, she shares things she has read with me and she gets so excited! Informing, entertaining and just FUN for her.

I live with 3 horse obsessed little girls. My 8 year old has already decided she want to train horses for a career and knows which college she wants to attend. The first time she saw one of these magazines, she had to have it. The articles are interesting and at a solid 3rd to 5th grade level. The pictures are amazing. Horse themed activities throughout make for an entertaining read. The only downside to this magazine is that it is not a monthly publication. However, there are newsletters with information and activities on the months that a full magazine isn't published. Any horse lover of elementary school age would love this magazine. I enjoy paging through it myself.

Skeptical Inquirer

Skeptical InquirerNothing like starting with a trite title. I've been subscribing to this fine journal longer than I have "Skeptic" which I also recommend. Indeed, I recently argued with a colleague, one who's convinced that she's had an out-of-body experience (OBE), who thinks this journal is the closest thing to heresy she's ever encountered. (Suffice it to say, the argument didn't go on for long. I climbed aboard my UFO and went off to Xanadu and we remain friends.)

I should mention too another friend who jumps from one New Age fad to another. He prefers "Skeptic" to this as he feels the editors of that magazine are less prone to insult the things in which he chooses to believe. So if your hypersensitive, this might not be for you. I'm not that sensitive, just know who NOT to bother arguing with.

I look forward to every issue of Skeptical Inquirer. Some of the articles are a little terse, but that's okay. I mean, Carl Sagan was right: extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Yet there's people who'll buy the latest health fads, the latest UFO claim--the list grows by the day.

To be perfectly honest, I thought the magazine was a little better when it was quarterly. (I think it's every other month now.) But I still read it cover to cover. It's a little less "academic" than "Skeptic" but that doesn't mean less researched. There just tends to be a little more wit than that other journal. When Martin Gardner had a regular column, I turned to that before the other articles. But Martin, like the rest of us, isn't getting any younger. I'll still have to read his library of books much of which graces my bookshelves.

Folks, there's a lot to learn. The "mainstream" media tend to NOT discourage items that lead to the Amityville Horror and countless other scams. (I just remember that one, hence my referring to it specifically.) Indeed, this is one of the few magazines that I not only read but save in one of the binders I also got from them (along with the legged Darwin fish for my car and the slogan, "I doubt it" which flashes on my cyber-hat. Sorry. Someone gave that to me for my birthday and that just seemed an appropriate slogan to flash to people who buy the stuff so seldom challenged by people who should know better!)

If you are inclined to skepticism, you're healthier than the average American these days. I recommend this journal. The subject matter is broad, the articles are fun, and

This magazine is put out by the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP for short). Their mission statement is "Encourage the critical investigation of paranormal and fringe-science claims from a responsible, scientific point of view and disseminates factual information about the results of such inquiries to the scientific community and the public" and the Skeptical Inquirer magazine is one of the main ways the information is disseminated.

The articles in any typical issue cover a wide range of subjects from ESP and alien abductions to the claims of efficacy of various alternative medicine practices. The point being with all of these topics, to apply the scientific method to either prove or disprove a claim. I've always found the articles to be unbiased. If a test is inconclusive the results are reported as readily as a positive result. In addition, since the magazine is intended for the public and not specifically scientists, the writing is always very clear and easy to read.

Buy Skeptical Inquirer Now

While it lacks the gloss and pizazz of the one other major magazine in the field (Skeptic), the Skeptical Inquirer is the far better publication of the two. It's much less of a one-man show, being guided by an organization (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of the Paranormal, or CSIOP) rather than a semi-charismatic leader. That's not to say it doesn't have its faults.

Like Skeptic, Skeptical Inquirer is heavy on the polemical approach and light on the tolerance. There tends to be a very heavy-handy and condescending attitude towards any religious belief, with a few odd and contradictory exceptions. For example, Martin Garder is a board member and a major inspiration of CSIOP; indeed, his books on "Fads and Fallacies" are among the most often-cited works on pseudoscience. Gardener himself is a practicing Christian, as he discusses in his book "What I Believe", yet he's all too quick to comdemn religious beliefs not concordant with his own. The truely skeptical reader might wonder why Garder's beliefs get a pass, but other religions are deemed cults. Why are only some revelation acceptible?

Overall, though, The Skeptical Inquirer does tend to have a little more of a scientific slant than does The Skeptic, and one will find more scientists writing in The Skeptical Inquirer. For instance, the current issue (July/August 2003) has an article on Memory Recover authored by (among others) Elizabeth Loftus, and a reply by Stephen PInker to an earlier article.

Given the choice between the two magazines mentioned, The Skeptical Inquirer gets my nod as the preferred publication. But it should still be read with an attitude at least as skeptical as the magazine itself.

Read Best Reviews of Skeptical Inquirer Here

This magazine contains detailed articles debunking modern mythology; ranging from crop circles to spontaneous combustion to psychics and beyond. Their well educated and preceptive journalists do significant scientific and historical research to provide detailed analyses of many proported paranormal occurances and explain the creation of such hoaxes. Their analytical results might be a bit offensive to people who truly want to believe in the paranormal, but most of their articles are carefully and tactfully written, and each experiment is done fairly, with an open mind. The articles contain comprehensive information that is useful to send to family and friends who are certain that (any such supernatural occurance) does exist. Skeptical Inquirer also contains reviews on related literary works and lectures. This is a must have publication for a well educated, rational person today. I have enjoyed every issue I have recieved.

Want Skeptical Inquirer Discount?

The act of skeptical inquiry in and of itself primarily results in what is often called "debunking." As a citizen living in country of people hoodwinked into beleiveing that witches, unicorns, and bigfoot all exist relative to their fairy tale roots, this magazine serves as a refreshing antidote. Most often you will find that those who are displeased with the magazine are those who want to read "serious inquiry" into X Files type events that are invariably a hoax. If someone wants to believe in the Loch Ness Monster or bleeding statues; that is their perogative. But they shouldn't be surprised when skeptical inquiry results in a less than favorable verdict for their pet-fantasies. For those that are interested in reading the best magazine of skeptical/rational inquiry outside of a straight science magazine; enjoy this one.

Reason (1-year auto-renewal)

ReasonThis is not a magazine for ideologues, this is for folks who truly believe in the title "Reason." You won't find the extremes of say "Liberty{Libertarian} or The Nation{Left}" in these pages. For anyone who likes current events & politics this is a new approach at looking at the world. There is a balance of both American & international views without being preachy. The reader may not agree with every articles concluding remedy for said problem? But, you will find the fresh perspective as one which will make you think differently about the issue.

It is divided into five parts. Departments, Culture & Reviews, Articles, Columnists, & Editorials. They all feature current events issues that are put into a new focus when compared to say "Time or Newsweek." The departments are divided into three parts. Letters, Citings, & Artifact. The first is obvious, the second has brief writings as in your local newspaper's. The latter is a one page article at the end of every issue, & often features something funny or unusual. Writers like Nick Gillespie, Jesse Walker, & Michael Lynch do not specialize in any one field. They often contribute to different sections of the magazine at various times. The photos are black & white, it is about seventy pages per issue, it comes out eleven times a year, & has only 15-20% of it devoted to advertising.

Reason magazine has the tag-line "free minds and free markets" and lives up to its promise. It's always interesting, provacative, and even if you don't agree, you'll always learn something. Part culture, part public policy, part current events, Reason looks at everything from an unconventional viewpoint. It's not liberal or conservative ... it's libertarian without being strident or cultish. I'd recommend it to anyone who is bored with the old, recycled left/right points of view.

Buy Reason (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Reason cannot be labeled conservative or leftist. Nor is it an extremist libertarian magazine like Liberty, fawning over Ayn Rand. It bases its commentary on the assumption that, if we have some faith, our chaotic culture will lead somewhere good. But if we try to monitor and control it excessively, we will dampen human creativity and end up muddled and conflicted. Reason takes on all aspects of culture and assumes an international perspective. Its arguments are laid out carefully but contain a percolating sense of indignation at our increasingly repressive environment. At the same time, they are more informative than polemical; each report is grounded in specifics quotes, anecdotes, studies. This is the most intelligent and inquiring "political" journal available. If only it came out more often!

Read Best Reviews of Reason (1-year auto-renewal) Here

Never before or since have I encountered a magazine consistently worth reading cover to cover. But I've been doing that with Reason for 11 years now. Reason examines current events from a perspective that's generally libertarian, as evinced by the "Free Minds and Free Markets" tag line. Among mainstream publications, Reason provides a unique and refreshing difference in a market dominated by liberal publications with a smattering of conservative "opposition." At the same time, Reason manages to avoid the preoccupation with philosophical and ideological minutia that plagues most other libertarian periodicals.

Want Reason (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

With all of the garbage journalism out there, and the political money-mongering, it's refreshing to read a magazine that is chock full of good solid common sense (when common sense is at a premium).

Here's a magazine that's not afraid to call a spade a spade. There's no blue or red slant here. Reason cuts through the liberal nonsense and the conservative blather to find real answers to real problems (and most of then involve NOT spending money on the problem and putting more money in your pocket). Interviews are published with politicians on both sides of the fence; no one is spared the cutting criticism that politicians so often deserve.

If you're the kind of person that can't stand the constant insanity of congress, or the random presidential edicts, or the judicial activism so rampantly present in our slowly dying country, then this is the magazine for you. If you're tired of the federal government stomping all over your personal and economic freedoms, then Reason is for you.

Claviers Piano Explorer

Claviers Piano ExplorerThis magazine is designed for piano students not teachers as the other reviewer mistakenly thought. It is a 16-page publication with interesting bios of composers and music history to spark students' interest. Although intended for piano students, many of the articles feature information that is of interest to students who play other instruments. My kids love the puzzles and games that are based on the articles. If you know a young piano student, get them this great magazine.

I'm writing as a teacher who gives this to my students. The cost of the magazine is covered in my annual Registration Fee. My students really enjoy Piano Explorer. I use it to supplement my teaching. It has compositions from other kids in it, it will have a composer listed every month, with recommended pieces to listen to. It has practice tips for the kids, recital tips, and some theory. I have really enjoyed using this for my students year after year. It's light easy reading for kids. My answer to the person who said it was too short, it's only $5.00 per child for the year (which is a great price) when you have a studio of 10 or more students to give it to.

It's great, when you as a teacher tell a student something multiple times, they don't get it, and SUDDENLY, VOILA! There it is in the magazine giving you credibility!

I do wish, however it had some jazz articles in it. It's mainly classically based.

True Detective

True Detective"true detective" is a classic old magazine. my 83 year old father in law loved seeing it again. an early father's day gift. he read it from front to back in a day. we were surprized to see it was shipped from England! my mother in law and i split the cost. it was well worth the money to order it, because he "truely" enjoyed it! thanks! lynn

True Detective has the best true crime stories, have been reading this for years. Their other mags True Crime , Master Detective and Murder Most Foul i recieve as well and they are all just as good. little tip though if you go straight to forum press its cheaper directly through them on as i just found out!!!

Buy True Detective Now

My first memory of True Detective magazines [and True Crime as well as Master Detective] is seeing my mother's collection [she has been collecting them since the 70s!] and this was back in Singapore [where British magazines are easily found]. I was just a young teen then, but my interest in true crime was cultivated back then and continues till today.

The stories are not for the faint-hearted these are true crime stories featuring some of the worst crimes and criminals in history, mainly centered in the US and UK, but also covering other countries in Europe, such as France and Germany. Some of these stories are penned by renowned true crime authors such as Colin Wilson etc, and each featured story is accompanied by actual photographs of the crime scene, the victim/s, the accused etc.

For those who love true crime, this and other true crime magazines are definitely recommended. The only problem I have faced since moving to the States is the difficulty in obtaining these magazines in bookstores [and the subscription price isn't exactly cheap either!]. But the magazine definitely makes for riveting reading!

Corvette MagazineIf you're tired of seeing candy apple red, blown, non driveable show cars then Corvette Magazine is for you. The stories are universally well written and cover all of the different "generations" of the car. The market reports in particular are a favorite of the reviewer. The photography is excellent and spans archival, corporate, and trade sources. This is the magazine for the thinking corvette enthusiast rather that the "lets stick big tires, flames, and chrome on it and head for the autorama" group. Like it's sister publications it's most definitely a cut above the rest.

This magazine should be considered a "must read" by every Corvette enthusiast. Very well written with great photography.....
