Whole Dog Journal (1-year auto-renewal)

Whole Dog JournalA few years ago a dear friend recommended Whole Dog Journal (WDJ) to me; I subscribed and my dogs and I have both benefited tremendously.

Articles over the last couple years that I found helpful and you might too:

"VeggieDent Chews Recalled in Australia" August 2009

"Update on Doxycycline and Heartworm Disease" August 2009

"Needing Pain Relief" acupuncture October 2009

"Do My Nails ... Please!" March 2009

"Help for OCD Dogs" October 2008

"Fence Sense; How to effectively contain your dog, and avoid the many pitfalls of inferior fencing" May 2009

"Finding the Right Rawhide" May 2009

"No More Jumping up" December 2009

"Calendula: 2008 Herb of the Year" April 2008

"Counting Calories" September 2009

"Microchip Registration Locator Tools Launched" November 2009

"Choosing Good Foods" Every start of the year they have their dry and wet food recommendation issues; I greatly appreciate this. WDJ does explain all of their reasons for selecting dog food companies and reasons why they disqualify companies. Reasons for disqualification include ingredients such as meat by-products, added sweeteners, artificial preservatives, such as BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin, artificial colors, etc ... WDJ also says that the giant corporations do a lot of research into their animal foods.

If you have a dog, please consider finding it in your budget to subscribe to Whole Dog Journal.

In depth articles about all things that should be of interest for any dog owner. No advertising to pollute the recommendations. Of special value are thier food articles, you may be surprised what is in some dog foods.

I've been a subscriber for many years and have learned MUCH about holistic dog care. There are no advertisements, so product reviews are sincere and honest. Health and training articles are detailed and focused on a positive, holistic view. Great value for anyone who wants to do more than the often toxic "conventional" for their dogs.

Thank you WDJ for your excellent standards in research and reliable communications for serious dog-lovers. This publication stays on the cutting edge of what is good, bad, and ugly in the world of dogs. It professionally delivers unbiased and credible information to its loyal fans, of which I know many. Every issue is interesting, informative, and thought-provoking for all dog-lovers. A must have if you own dogs.

I took this journal for years, and had to stop it a couple of years ago b/c of budget crunch. However, I'd always just loved it. Every issue had something in it that answered a current question. I especially like their information about nutrition, and that they work so hard to promote good training practices. Now I hope never to be without it again well, as long as my dogs and I last!

New African

New AfricanI am an African currently residing in the US. My father who lives in Ghana sent a copy of NEWAFRICAN to me last year and since then I have become HOOKED!I subscribe religiously. It pains me that I did not discover it before. A very well presented magazine. The piece featured in every edition are COLLECTOR'S ITEMS (no kidding). It presents stories about the continent and the world giving balanced views from the past, the present and insights into the potential future implications!! I learn so much history about Africa and the world. You will not regret it trust me. I eagerly look forward to EVERY EDITION

New African is a generally well-written magazine, covering a wide variety of topics for the whole continent. However it seems to have a strong pro-Mugabe (Zimbabwe) bias, to the point that many suspect it is a ZANU party mouthpiece. As with any media, read critically and compare to other sources.

Buy New African Now

"New African" is one of the most in-depth journal available focusing on reporting on political, social and cultural developments in Africa, analysis of economic activities, sport, music and even art and fashion. It is an interesting blend of current issues and insightful analysis of activities and events on the continent.

While one should not rely on one magazine for their news and perspectives, I would count on New African to have the last word on most topics pertaining to the African continent.

For those who want to know what is going on in Africa, this magazine is a must-read. It covers things going on in places often neglected by other magazines. New African is fairly balanced in its reporting, entertaining and rooted in a deep understanding of African history and today's world.

Space and Time Magazine

Space and Time MagazineOnce upon a time there were lots of Sci Fi, Fantasy and Horror magazines in print. OK, many were pulps, but they were cheap and often lots of fun. They also gave a lot of people a chance to express themselves and entertain others.

There are not too many of these print magazines left. Sure there are many online now, but call me old and out of touch, but it is so much more satisfying to read something in paper format. As a librarian said to me just this week when I complained that my favorite magazines at the library were no longer available in print format there but you can see them online here. I said thanks, but no thanks. She said, I know what you mean online is fine to look stuff up and for email, but for real reading, print is better. I agree.

Anyway, I say let's support these print magazines. I hear this one has been going strong for 40 years too.

I ordered a subscription to this magazine with a gift certificate I got for my birth day. There are lots of excellent stories in it, as well as some I didn't like all that much. One of my favorite stories was Spacer's Gamble, by Josepha Sherman which appeared in the spring 2010 issue. The illustrations in this Magazine are pretty neat too. The only thing I don't like about this magazine is the fact that only 4 issues a year are published.

This item was sent as a gift, but was met with appreciation, so I would have to give it a very positive rating.

Vanity Fair July 2007 Africa Issue, Brad Pitt / Desmond Tutu Cover

Vanity Fair July 2007 Africa Issue, Brad Pitt / Desmond Tutu CoverI have spent years of my life reading and watching news about Africa, and it never matched what I experienced being on site. This issue of Vanity Fair portrays it ALL: the Good, the Bad, The Ugly, the Amazing and the Truth. For a fashion addict that I am, I never bought an issue of Vanity Fair and that day in the Hudson News store, the "Africa" logo caught my attention. When I opened the magazine, this is what got me to buy it, I read the following lines: "The media often treat Africa's 53 countries as a vast hopeless mass. `That hurts' writes one of Kenya literary stars who has a deeply individual tale of his country stunning political change and the emergence of the "Equity Generation"".

A fundamental statement is made in that sentence: it's not Africa, it's about 53 Africans countries, with different cultures, different stories, different lives, different histories...

This issue depicts Africa in its True Light and opens doors to:

the world to appreciate, to explore, to connect, to respect, to help Africa

Africans to embrace their homeland and fight for it

Every article is worth reading and gives hope to true journalism. I will buy more of this issue I started to do, to offer to my loves ones. I should thank Vanity Fair, the editor and guest editor.

I got sent an issue with the wrong cover Pitt is on it, Tutu not. Other than that the magazine is very interesting and has a lot of informing articles on Africa in it.

911 & Porsche World

911 & Porsche WorldI consider 911 & Porsche World the best of the three British Porsche-centric publications I get each month. Always informative and fulled with fascinating stories and anedotes that sometimes is hard to find in a typical U.S. publication, 911 & Porsche World's perspective on All Things Porsche is one of the highlights of all the automotive monthlies I subscribe to or pick-up at the local newsstand. Of which leads me to my chief gripe with Amazon's offer.

If you have a Barnes & Noble store easily accessible, you will find that 911 & Porsche World currently sells for $6.99 an issue. While it would require you to go down to B&N each month, that works out to be just under $84 a year. To have a year's worth of this excellent magazine shipped direct to you, a subscriber will pay a $26 (plus change) PREMIUM for the service, which runs counter to the usual magazine discount subscription rates we normally find in the U.S. (since the bulk of the income in most American magazines is advertising-driven). Plus, you have to still deal with the wonders of our glorious United States Postal Service, which try as hard as they do to do otherwise, still seem to mangle, shred, soak, and lose an occasional subscription monthly of mine every so often. Some service to look forward to, even for an enjoyable mag such as this.

Still, if a Barnes & Noble, Border's Books, or other local bookseller who stocks import specialty publications isn't available to you, 911 & Porsche World is still a very worthwhile magazine for any fan of that special automaker hailing from Zuffenhausen. But personally, for me there's nothing better than picking up my monthly issues of 911 & Porsche World in person and going next door to the coffee bistro for a quiet weekend afternoon of drowning in a perfect cup of java and reveling in even more potent Porsche nirvana, UK-style.

Five stars for 911 & Porsche World, three (barely) for the subscription price.

The Brits have a way of doing things that make us colonialists seem rather drab. My mechanic invited me to view this magazine, and I have been hooked since. Not only are the technical reviews quality, but you also have the opportunity to follow the joys, trials, and tribulations of actual owners as they drive and fuss over their Porsches. There are articles on racing, ralleys, clubs, and the cars themselves that are both practical, entertaining, and even inspiring. It reinvigorates the interest and joy in ownership that makes plunking down another thousand dollars for tires or repairs less than tiresome.

Buy 911 & Porsche World Now

I routinely pick up this magazine at the newsstand. It is less expensive there. I have no idea why Amazon pricing would be higher. It is, however, very difficult to find. I have only found it at one location.

That said, it is a wonderful magazine, which despite its title, focuses on much more than just 911's.

It is a UK published magazine which requires some translation (at least with respect to dollars and cents) It also has articles that would have no application here (i.e. how to convert from left to right hand drive). However the core of the magazine crosses all borders.

There is a monthly update of the employee's cars. There is a monthly test of available used cars and there is a good tech section. All this in addition to the more or less standard reviews.

I would say it is more "homey" than some of the other magazines. In many ways that makes it easier to relate.

The print version of the report can also be ordered for about 50 bucks, shipped to the USA. The WHO notes: "The world health report, first published in 1995, is WHO's leading publication. The report combines an expert assessment of global health, including statistics relating to all countries, with a focus on a specific subject. The main purpose of the report is to provide countries, donor agencies, international organizations and others with the information they need to help them make policy and funding decisions. The report is also offered to a wider audience, from universities, teaching hospitals and schools, to journalists and the public at large anyone, in fact, with a professional or personal interest in international health issues."

Hype Hair

Hype HairI'm very disappointed with this magazine. It seems to be a total waste of money. I found one article that was somewhat helpful and sometimes 2-3 pictures in each issue that give me some style ideas, but it's not worth the money or my time digging through it trying to find something I can use.

this magazine is terrible, its full of ads for products that truly do not help black hair at all. The photos of the models hair look bad, 98% of the styles will not and do not work in daily life without drawing negative attention to oneself. Sorry but a hard as rock red and orange weave flipped up does not look good. I won't even comment on the makeup application of the models, its even worse. Its like every chick in the magazine has a weave and all tips and instructions really only work on girls who weave or have hair that is below their armpits.

If you are looking for a black hair magazine that provides better photos and tips and just overall better, look for the ones that come out of the UK. They are more expensive but they are fiften times better than Hype Hair.

I love this magazine because it shows multiple angles of the hairstyles. Other magazines I've encountered don't offer that feature.

I buy this magazine every month and have been since I was 16, it just now dawned on me to buy a subscription. If you like to look at multiple different hairstyles including those that might be at a hair show you would really like it. For the people that said the hairstyles are not for everyday, its because some of them are meant for an artsy effect. This magazine has multiple celebrity articles also along with a few tips and tricks. One of my favorite bits in this magazine is the fashion police type article in which they give "tickets" for horrible hair fashion crimes. They illustrate the people as cartoons and it is very funny. Yes, it has ALOT of ads, but in today's world print isn't really doing well so they have to get their money some how. They are mostly weave ads. In all you can go to wallmart, cvs, walgreens, really any store that sells magazines and try it first. I you like sophisticate's black hair magazine, you will like this.

Popular Science (1-year auto-renewal)

Popular ScienceOkay, I've read the other reviews that call this publication shallow, lacking in depth, geared toward young teenagers, etc. I guess if you are looking for twenty page, in-depth technical articles that delve into every minute neutron of a particular subject, then yes, this publication might not be what you're looking for.

But, if you're a regular, average, ordinary guy like me (who would not understand those deep, brainy articles anyway) and you are looking for an entertaining, informative view onto what's new and what's cool, I think you'll be pleased. Very pleased!

Take, for example, a couple of recent issues (see the date of when this review was written). Last month was focused on the future of personal aviation and the people behind the effort to make personal flight more available and affordable, and about the aircrafts they are inventing. Fascinating! Now, can I run out and build myself a prototype after reading the articles? Ummm, no. Do I know a whole lot more about an incredibly fun subject then I did before? Yes!

This month's issue focuses on similar theme: The future of personal space travel and the idea of a space-hotel. When you're done reading it will you be able to build a rocket and fly to the moon? Of course not. But it's informative and educational to the exact level I would want it to be... just enough to make me aware, enlightened, and entertained.

So to all the non-nerds, non-rocket scientists, and non-brainiacs who want a scientific publication by the people, for the people, I think your yearly subscription money will be well spent.

Enjoy!

This is a great magazine for those who want to find out about current scientific topics but do no want to delve into the complexity of scientific matter like Scientific American.

This is a great magazine to buy for those that are high school ages. Those who have strong technical backgrounds may find the articles a bit lacking in substance and length. The average article length is only about 2 or 3 pages and often you feel as though they could have added more.

One particular enjoyment I find in the magazine is the What's New feature. This highlights the best new inventions and innovations every moth culminating in their annual Best of What's New issue in December.

I would reccommend this magazine to anyone with a amateur interest in science and technology and wants to be kept up to date.

Buy Popular Science (1-year auto-renewal) Now

I have read PopSci for decades, and so quickly started a subscription for my son at age 10 when he showed interest. The articles are very good, but the advertisments are riddled with sexual peformace boosting products of all sorts.

I think that PopSci has a responsibility to consider that it is read by and marketed to children as well as adults, and should take a closer look at its sponsors. I couldn't let him bring it to school without ripping out pages first. I haven't noticed this problem with other periodicals of the same standing. By the way, when I contacted PopSci about my concerns about this, I received no response. Do advertisers come before the reading public?

Read Best Reviews of Popular Science (1-year auto-renewal) Here

"Popular Science" is one of the few magazines that I have a subscription to. This magazine is mind candy for the curious perosn. It informs the reader on new inventions, newsfronts, automobiles, aviation, medicine, and almost every other aspect of science. One of my favorite sections of this informative and fun magazine is the "Newsfronts" section. Here you are informed of current things that are happening in the scientific world whether it be medicine or physics.

"Popular Science" would make a great gift for a friend, family member, or yourself. This magazine will feed the craving that many people get when they are craving information. Order a subscription to this magazine and discover why everybody is raving about this being the best scientific magazine inprint. I recommend this magazine to somebody that is interested in science and would like to get a broad scope of scientific information in a great magazine.

Happy Reading!!!

Want Popular Science (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

Popular Science is among many of the magazines currently engaging in the practice of contracting out billing...which then gets subcontracted and sometimes sub-subcontracted out. This means you may have to contact three or four different companies via half a dozen (or more) phone numbers with subscription-related issues.

In fact, one subagency, Magazine Billing Services, has closed down their call center, so cancelation requests must be sent by snail mail only. (We've also seen notices from and numbers for Publishers Billing Agency and Publishers Unlimited, in addition to Popular Science's direct numbers.)

Additionally, renewal notices are sent out regardless of the actual expiration date. If subscribers aren't vigilant, they'll find themselves paying for 20 year's worth of subscriptions. And then, due to the entanglement of companies described above, it will take days of calling, holding and letter writing to get the problem of the deceptive renewal notices straightened out.

If that particular agency wasn't involved in that particular renewal notice that was responded to (and we've received "renewal" notices from all of them simultaneously), then the subscriber gets continually redirected. Get used to hearing the phrase, "I can't help you with that." Also get used to requests taking months or more to be processed (if they get processed at all) and get used to getting no responses from emailed queries, requests or complaints.

This is becoming an increasingly common practice, but that doesn't mean consumers have to put up with it. If Popular Science believes it's good customer service to subcontract out billing and relentlessly pepper subscribers with intentionally deceptive "renewal" notices, they can keep their rag of a magazine.

Country Woman

Country WomanCountry Woman is a good magazine for craft tips and recipes as each edition usually has a bit of both. There is usually a feature concerning country living and an editor spends a day at a country business to learn about how the business does their thing.

That being written it's been awhile since I've read this magazine and you can not find it here at local stores. The reason why I did not renew my subscription as the magazine seemed to lose its homey feel after the Reiman Magazines were sold to another publisher. Since then the magazine feels cheaper, especially after they moved to "recyclable" paper. I have nothing against using Earth friendly products but the choice of paper just feels cheap.

I am no longer a subscriber as Country Woman just doesn't appeal.

Don't throw your money away. Mostly advertising about stuff the average person doesn't need. Even most of the articles were not practical.

Native Peoples

Native PeoplesFor the last 3 years my Mother and I have ordered this magazine and every time a new issue arrives we fight over who will get to read it first. Native Peoples Magazine is truly in touch with the latest news and events in the Native American Indian community as well as the stories and information on the finest artisans sharing Native culture through their work. This is a wonderful magazine we will enjoy for many years to come and recommends it highly for anyone else seeking Native American information.

This is an excellent product for those looking to collect or sell Native American art objects. It even works well for those who want to look and then dream of collecting Native American art. There are museums, galleries and artist's galleries listed. There articles written by or directed at Native American artists. And there are these same resources for those who are just looking, window-shopping. The pages are high-gloss paper and very professional looking. A lot of work effort and energy goes into producing a high-quality magazine. The only shame is that it is NOT produced monthly. But, if I have to wait a little longer for the quality then so be it. THANX! terry

Corvette Magazine

Corvette MagazineIf you're tired of seeing candy apple red, blown, non driveable show cars then Corvette Magazine is for you. The stories are universally well written and cover all of the different "generations" of the car. The market reports in particular are a favorite of the reviewer. The photography is excellent and spans archival, corporate, and trade sources. This is the magazine for the thinking corvette enthusiast rather that the "lets stick big tires, flames, and chrome on it and head for the autorama" group.
