Rider (1-year auto-renewal)

This magazine is for people that like to combine motorcycles with travel. It's for guys/gals that ride bikes to enjoy new places, find new twisties, and just plain put mileage on their machines. Flip through the pages and you don't see Super Sport/Nitro or V-Twin Ultra-Customs with zero miles on the odometer. Writers don't really care whether a bike does a 11 second quarter mile (don't get me wrong, more HP is better than less!). What you do get are stories about weekend and week-long rides in places like the Grand Canyon, the Pyrenee Mountains, or the Dakotas. Bike reviews are mostly on machines like the BMW K1200 GT (a sport tourer) or Yamaha Silverado (cruiser with bags/windshield). Columnists concentrate on riding skills, what to pack for the road, and gadgets that can make riding more fun. It's practical and entertaining info. It's my personal favorite magazine.

Largely geared towards the rider attracted to the larger bikes capable of logging lots of miles. Seems to feature a smattering of sport bikes, sport-tourers as well as touring rigs, the larger touring cruisers and liter sized open-bikes. The commentary is often based on longer rides, as well as long-term tests, and they occasionally dig up stuff on the classic bikes of the 50-70s, for those senior riders who want a trip down memory lane. They do not always have the most technical of write-ups, but feature good useful information for the enthusiast who wants to keep abreast of what's happening... Not a squid or scene mag.

The thing I like about "Rider" is that it's more real world related that other magazines like "Motorcyclist" and "Cycle World." It focuses more on the ride rather than plugging the latest and greatest cutting edge motorcycles. It's very well rounded. If I could only subscribe to one Motorcycle magazine this would probably be the one I'd choose.

For the type of riding the majority of people do, Rider magazine can't be beat. From Sport touring to scooters, the coverage is excellent. In-depth equipment reviews, ride reports, maintenance how-to's, and motorcycle reviews round out it's offerings.

Highly recommended for the beginner and the experienced.

I ride a cruiser and used to subscribe to Motrocycle Cruiser nad Cruising Rider. After they stopped publication of cruising rider, they sent me issues of rider and I enjoyed it. Covers all types of bikes including cruisers and have some very good travel reports.

Very Good deer hunting magazine. As a deer hunter, I have found alot of excellent articles that have helped me to understand the " art & whys" of deer hunting. Always something new to learn in each month's copy. Art graphics depicting article hightlights are top-notch. I've just finished my first year with this magazine and will definately renew my subscription. I would rate this magazine to be as good or better than issues of "Deer & Deer Hunting".

I bought the subscription for my nephew as a xmas present who loves it!!! He then shares w/his father, my brother-in-law. They're both avid hunters. So this year I subscribed for my brother-in-law as a 50th birthday gift. Money well spent!!!

Sound & Vision (1-year auto-renewal)

This is a pretty good magazine. I notice that they mostly review high end equipment with high end price tags. I might have to look for a magazine that reveiws items more in my price range. I mean common, a projector for $85,000?!

My love of audio (later video) started back in the 60s. I still subscribe to Sound and Vision but it is a pale shadow of Stereo Review, Audio and High Fidelity magazines and their substantive reviews of music and equipment. Likewise the original video magazines are gone as well.

For some reason the British still have great magazines in all categories. Too bad they are expensive and not widely available here.

This magazine reads like it's just quoting from press releases. It does not seem to be a neutral or well informed source of information.

I've been a subscriber for about 4 years now, and love the topic (Home Theater & Audio/Video equipment), but this magazine has undergone a couple format changes that makes it hard to read.

I think they're trying to appeal to a younger group of people who are obviously more interested in convienance 'hand-held' items, than in audio or video quality.

And this magazine suffers greatly for it.

Too many reviews, and too much coverage of (so called) "lifestyle" products to, like hand held app junk and the like, or remote control of house lights (who cares?), etc.

If there's "not an app for it", or doesn't appeal to someone with the attention span of a squirrel, it doesn't get covered.

Then they when down to only 8 issues a year, seems like its never arriving now...summer months? Forget it!

They were better when they concentrated on the hobby itself, comparitive equipment reviews, and the experimentation that makes it fun.

I'm hoping things will improve with this magazine in the future, (because I've got a lot of months left on my subscription!), but if not, then it doesn't get re-newed when the time comes...

I've been a subscriber of this magazine for over 40 years. You used to get a new issue monthly and I looked forward to each and every issue. Then it changed to 10 issues per year and now it's down to only 8. Of course, the price remains the same. I got so used to not receiving it that it was hardly noticeable when I dropped my subscription. The part the toasts me most is that I paid for a 3 year subscription when you got monthly magazines. Then they cut the number of magazines. What a rip. When I contacted the company they hardly seemed to care, and did nothing to rectify my situation.

Popular Science (1-year auto-renewal)

Okay, I've read the other reviews that call this publication shallow, lacking in depth, geared toward young teenagers, etc. I guess if you are looking for twenty page, in-depth technical articles that delve into every minute neutron of a particular subject, then yes, this publication might not be what you're looking for.

But, if you're a regular, average, ordinary guy like me (who would not understand those deep, brainy articles anyway) and you are looking for an entertaining, informative view onto what's new and what's cool, I think you'll be pleased. Very pleased!

Take, for example, a couple of recent issues (see the date of when this review was written). Last month was focused on the future of personal aviation and the people behind the effort to make personal flight more available and affordable, and about the aircrafts they are inventing. Fascinating! Now, can I run out and build myself a prototype after reading the articles? Ummm, no. Do I know a whole lot more about an incredibly fun subject then I did before? Yes!

This month's issue focuses on similar theme: The future of personal space travel and the idea of a space-hotel. When you're done reading it will you be able to build a rocket and fly to the moon? Of course not. But it's informative and educational to the exact level I would want it to be... just enough to make me aware, enlightened, and entertained.

So to all the non-nerds, non-rocket scientists, and non-brainiacs who want a scientific publication by the people, for the people, I think your yearly subscription money will be well spent.

This is a great magazine for those who want to find out about current scientific topics but do no want to delve into the complexity of scientific matter like Scientific American.

This is a great magazine to buy for those that are high school ages. Those who have strong technical backgrounds may find the articles a bit lacking in substance and length. The average article length is only about 2 or 3 pages and often you feel as though they could have added more.

One particular enjoyment I find in the magazine is the What's New feature. This highlights the best new inventions and innovations every moth culminating in their annual Best of What's New issue in December.

I would reccommend this magazine to anyone with a amateur interest in science and technology and wants to be kept up to date.

I have read PopSci for decades, and so quickly started a subscription for my son at age 10 when he showed interest. The articles are very good, but the advertisments are riddled with sexual peformace boosting products of all sorts.

I think that PopSci has a responsibility to consider that it is read by and marketed to children as well as adults, and should take a closer look at its sponsors. I couldn't let him bring it to school without ripping out pages first. I haven't noticed this problem with other periodicals of the same standing. By the way, when I contacted PopSci about my concerns about this, I received no response. Do advertisers come before the reading public?

"Popular Science" is one of the few magazines that I have a subscription to. This magazine is mind candy for the curious perosn. It informs the reader on new inventions, newsfronts, automobiles, aviation, medicine, and almost every other aspect of science. One of my favorite sections of this informative and fun magazine is the "Newsfronts" section. Here you are informed of current things that are happening in the scientific world whether it be medicine or physics.

"Popular Science" would make a great gift for a friend, family member, or yourself. This magazine will feed the craving that many people get when they are craving information. Popular Science is among many of the magazines currently engaging in the practice of contracting out billing...which then gets subcontracted and sometimes sub-subcontracted out. This means you may have to contact three or four different companies via half a dozen (or more) phone numbers with subscription-related issues.

In fact, one subagency, Magazine Billing Services, has closed down their call center, so cancelation requests must be sent by snail mail only. (We've also seen notices from and numbers for Publishers Billing Agency and Publishers Unlimited, in addition to Popular Science's direct numbers.)

Additionally, renewal notices are sent out regardless of the actual expiration date. If subscribers aren't vigilant, they'll find themselves paying for 20 year's worth of subscriptions. And then, due to the entanglement of companies described above, it will take days of calling, holding and letter writing to get the problem of the deceptive renewal notices straightened out.

If that particular agency wasn't involved in that particular renewal notice that was responded to (and we've received "renewal" notices from all of them simultaneously), then the subscriber gets continually redirected. Get used to hearing the phrase, "I can't help you with that." Also get used to requests taking months or more to be processed (if they get processed at all) and get used to getting no responses from emailed queries, requests or complaints.

This is becoming an increasingly common practice, but that doesn't mean consumers have to put up with it. If Popular Science believes it's good customer service to subcontract out billing and relentlessly pepper subscribers with intentionally deceptive "renewal" notices, they can keep their rag of a magazine.
