M
I think the main problem with this magazine is the fact that they have not gone 2 years without featuring Hilary Duff, Jesse McCartney, and sometimes Lindsay Lohan on EVERY SINGLE COVER. If they had new things to write about these people, it would be fine, but the "gossip" about these stars is pretty much the same in every magazine. Also, the articles are bland and extremely shortmost of them are a page or less. The biggest thing this magazine has got going for itself are its posters... there are i think 6 gigantic posters in every issue, along with a bunch of smaller ones. Another thing I found annoying about this magazine is its constant use of IM slang (i.e. OMG!! Ur crush just asked you out! What do u do now?!)
Thus, this magazine would be best suited for those people who enjoy reading about Hilary Duff and Jesse McCartney and are under 12 years old. If you don't fit that criteria, trust methis magazine will bore you very, very easily.I would not recommend anyone order this. I'd love to review the product itself for potential customers, but --despite having placed this order more than six months ago -I still haven't received a single issue (it was a Christmas gift for my daughter). When I asked why, I got no apology, but just a comment that I would receive the June issue and that my subscription would still expire at the scheduled time. It's worth noting that the reply from customer service was riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, which did not exactly inspire confidence in this company. I'm going to explain the situation to my daughter and let her decide whether to cancel the subscription or not. Bottom line -don't order anything from Magazine Express.I love M. its really a [great] magazine, for the average teenager! One of the BEST things about it, is that in each issue, they have HUGE posters of awesome celebs! They have really cool articles in it as well...if your a fan of J-14 magazine or BOP you'll LOVE M!

Cincinnati Magazine (1-year automatic renewal)
I highly recommend Cincinnati Magazine. This is such a well written general interest magazine. I've only lived in Cincinnati a couple of years and this magazine has already informed me of the culture, fashion, food, history, top doctors/dentist/etc. They always have compelling, in-depth feature stories you would enjoy even if you didn't live here. The dine section is amazing, as well. There are places I would've never thought to go to--for every budget--weekday restaurants, as well as high-end places to bring visitors from out of town to impress.
The design and photography are gorgeous. This really is like reading a top-notch national magazine with local interest.

Rider (1-year auto-renewal)
Buy Rider (1-year auto-renewal) Now
The thing I like about "Rider" is that it's more real world related that other magazines like "Motorcyclist" and "Cycle World." It focuses more on the ride rather than plugging the latest and greatest cutting edge motorcycles. It's very well rounded. If I could only subscribe to one Motorcycle magazine this would probably be the one I'd choose.Read Best Reviews of Rider (1-year auto-renewal) Here
For the type of riding the majority of people do, Rider magazine can't be beat. From Sport touring to scooters, the coverage is excellent. In-depth equipment reviews, ride reports, maintenance how-to's, and motorcycle reviews round out it's offerings.Highly recommended for the beginner and the experienced.I ride a cruiser and used to subscribe to Motrocycle Cruiser nad Cruising Rider. After they stopped publication of cruising rider, they sent me issues of rider and I enjoyed it. Covers all types of bikes including cruisers and have some very good travel reports.

Coin Prices (1-year)
If you have an interest in coin prices this is an excellent magazine.
The primary purpose of the magazine is to give current coin prices 6 times a year. If you are interested in coin collecting itself Coins magazine is good as it deals more with collecting. This magazine basically only gives current values of coins, etc. I thought it would give ideas on how to get started, where to look for information on collecting or where to order things like coin folders, etc. The prices in this magazine were very different from the the red book and blue book. Who is right?I renewed this publication for my husband. He just received notice that it will be replaced with a different magazine. Hopefully he will enjoy the new one as much or more than the one ordered. Color us both surprised.I have been having to look through a lot of sources to find current coin prices(especially silver stuff). Just got my first "Coin Prices" magazine and right away it was very useful!

Harvard Business Review (1-year auto-renewal)
However, i must say that for a business which constistently expounds best practice and business leadership, HBR itself is lagging sadly behond the times. I have never experienced such poor service from any magazine i have subscribed to customer service is slow and unhelpful, systems are completely disparate across geographies and online vs print subscriptions, and the staff I have spoken to have been unwilling/unable to help me any time I have called.
The policy of replying to customer queries within 2-3 days is simply archaic!!! HBR you of all organisations should be aware that times are changing, and 72 hours is simply too long to wait for a response on the status of my subscription (which, incidentally, you have charged me for and then "lost" all record of).
Similarly, having your corporate clients sit on hold for 20 mins to speak with a customer service representative, only to be told the phone number provided by the online chat consultant was for a US online subscription help only is too long. To add insult to injury, the representative in your Florida call centre then advised that i needed to call a phone number in the Netherlands you can imagine I was thrilled by the prospect of spending another 20 min on hold at international call rates... luckily i was saved the hassle, because the number i was provided was incorrect and i wasn't able to get through anyway.
So here I stand... I can't get online help because, having not received a publication in 6 months i don't have the cover sheet with my subscription number, and the call centre won't provide it for me. I can spend another 20 min on hold to try and get the CORRECT phone number for the netherlands office but that hardly seems like a productive use of my workday.
I'm afraid you've lost me HBR There is no way i can justify renewing my subscription (i notice you're well on top of sending me renewal specials 6 months before my subscription expires good to see where your priorities lay). You're a great magazine, but i am afraid i am cmpletely turned off by your total inability to practice what you preach. Maybe it's time to get your own house in order? When I subscribed to this publication I received an e-mail saying that they couldn't give me my user-name yet because of "computer problems". So they gave me a temporary user name (HBROCT) and password. Now a week later I can't get in, and customer service is demanding that I re-subscribe for a more expensive "upgrade". What a crock!
I can do without the hassle, and they can do without my $$ apparently.
You would think that the people that run this org would be way above this kind of cr#p. TWO days for a response? WTH?
I hope others enjoy the subscription they wanted, and that they never have to deal with this places' "customer service".

I have been a subscription member of HBR for over 2 years now and am a fully subscribed member (Online + Print). The quality of articles and case studies are excellent and definitely worth the reading time. I try not to miss any article in the print issue. However, on the online front they can do better. For a fully subscribed user, it is a struggle that each time I do a search for any topic, I get a list 80-85 % online articles which I need to "Buy PDF" and just 15 -20 % articles which I can read online. Then why do they charge separate fee for an online subscription in fully paid membership? When I am in travel, I don't want to pull ou my credit card each time to a read an article on a topic of my choice.

Want Harvard Business Review (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?
The Harvard Business Review is a very well written publication that has served me well over the last few years of graduate school. I feel the subscription falls short because it does not offer any additional features such as reviewing past editions on-line or down loading the articles. When I wrote to them, this was their (HBR) response:"We offer an online subscription to hbr.org which includes the following, but would cost an additional subscription price.
What comes with an HBR online subscription?
An online subscription to HBR includes online access to individual full-text HBR articles, but only individual HBR articles and HBR case studies. You may read the articles online but you cannot download the articles.
The subscription does not include access to HBS cases or cases from other academic institutions. Those can only be purchased individually.
HBR case studies differ from other case studies in that the HBR case studies are fictional.
An HBR online subscription does not include access to the PDF reprints, just to the full-text online versions.
The PDF files are reprinted versions. All the past editions of the HBR until about 1960 are available as a part of the online subscription."
This tells me that everything for this publication is an additional charge.

This is the only fishing magazine my husband will subscribe to. He doesn't feel like most of the fishing magazines are worth it (too many ads, not enough content). He is so happy I subscribed him to it, and it's not a bad price either! We always order magazines from Amazon, because it's usually cheaper than the magazine's website.Monday, June 2, 2014

Fine Woodworking
I've gone from hobbyist to almost-full time professional woodworker over the past few years, making everything from small desk clocks to custom cabinetry and furniture. I'd have to roger up with the other reviewers who've said that, if they could only have one woodworking magazine, this would be it.
Strengths -I don't care where you are in your woodworking skill/experience level; you WILL find something worth a careful read in each issue. I've subscribed to several other woodworking magazines of which that could not be said. Yes, much of what is featured/discussed in these magazines is "high-level" stuff. That's how you grow as a woodworker. There needs to be at least one journal for any profession that takes on the finer points on a consistent basis. THIS IS IT for the profession of woodworking. What's new in water-based finishes (a lot!), veneering, dovetails on a curved drawer front (haven't tried THAT one yet!) -just a few of the kinds of stuff you can expect to find in FWW. Four or five years ago I may have disregarded this magazine as "too much" for me; then again, I cringe at the quality and worksmanship of some of my "handiwork" from that same time!
The contributors to this magazine (I've met a few) are some of the most accomplished, yet down-to-sawdust people you'd ever meet in this business. Most of them are making a living working wood, and are happy to share lessons of both success and failure to help the reader.
Weaknesses? Well, as has been mentioned, you won't find many diagrams or drawings to help you step-by-step. Personally, I don't consider that a drawback, and it's not part of the magazine's mission to provide them. If you're out to basically cut out and assemble a kit every so often, you'll want to look elsewhere.
If, on the other hand, you want to develop your knowledge of one of the oldest crafts in history, to get to the point that you can conceive, design, draft, and build (oh, yeah -and finish!) one -or a hundred -quality works in wood, then this is well worth the annual subscription. Many have heard the old Copenhagen snuff ad that stated, "Sooner or later it is Copenhagen!". Well, that is exactly how it goes with Fine Woodworking. Some say it isn't filled with enough projects and they are too difficult, some say the articles are way too technical, and even others say that the reviews are too critical. Response: Yes and no. If you don't want your tools to last a lifetime, then the reviews are too critical. If you want a project that you can be proud of your entire life and look at with pride, knowing it will become a family heirloom, then the projects are not to difficult, and after you spend 100 hours building something and another 30 to 50 hours sanding and finishing it, there aren't too few. And if you sincerely believe that ignorance is bliss, and education is the root of evil, then yes the articles are too technical.
For anyone that wants to become the best woodworker they can, then this is the magazine for you. Many start out with other magazines, "BUT SOONER OR LATER IT IS FINE WOODWORKING"!I have been a subscriber for many years, but for $34.95, it just isn't worth it anymore. Woodwork is a better magazine with more original content. I just can't see putting out this much for an advertising based magazine. Look elsewhere, like used books for lasting content for much less. The magazine has always had an "east coast" bias, which is fine, but the lack of diversity of the woodworking styles represented is not excusable in a magazine supposed to be covering the furniture building audience. If you ever can get your hands on some of the earlier copies, you will be amazed at the quality of writers and articles then compared with now.
I would recommend Popular Woodworking if you are interested in hand tools and methods. Seems a little fresher these days. Or for a more artistic bent, look at Woodwork magazine.

Of all the woodworking magazines available to read Fine Woodworking is the best, bar none. It will encourage those with no experience, and inspire those who are serious about woodworking. I have subscribed to this magazine for the past 12 years, and have read many articles that have helped me to become a better woodworker. The old issues I have saved for reference and are timeless in their information.Want Fine Woodworking Discount?
Once upon a time there was a magazine published on glossy paper, oversized, and printed in black and white. It covered high-quality, slightly artsy, woodworking and woodworkers. Sometimes it was a little hard for the average home woodworker to relate to some of the content, but it was a compelling magazine none-the-less. Yes, that magazine was Fine Woodworking, in its early incarnation.Since that time, Fine Woodworking has developed into a mainstay of the woodworking world. Long printed in full color, the magazine continues to offer coverage of some of the more esoteric woodworking designs and woodworkers, but most of the content is geared towards the dedicated woodworking enthusiast. While it seems that most of the content is dedicated to furniture buiilders, there is something for everything in this magazine. If you are looking for home repair and carpentry, you won't find it here, but you will find information on woodworking techniques, tools and finishing.
I subscribe to few magazines because I just don't have the time to read them all. For woodworking , this is the one magazine I will not do without.
