Red Magazine
My only gripe is the price in the US. I think it goes for $11. That's a lot for a magazine so I refuse to purchase it every month, I can't justify this monthly expenditure. I wish it were cheaper, sure. But it's a great, whimsical, well rounded product. For that I am pleased.A friend brought me a copy of Red while she visited Oxford. I spent hours with it. This magazine is superb; the articles are well-written and engaging. The only thing that bothered me was the references to certain products, many of which are available only in the UK, with prices listed in pounds. (Yes, I know this is a British magazine but I was mildly annoyed. Call me shallow.) This didn't bother me enough to make me stop reading at any time, however. After the first read, I wanted to read it all again.
About the only thing that stops me from ordering a subscription is the high price. Perhaps when I win the Publishers' Clearing House Sweepstakes I will subscribe to Red.

Arizona Highways Magazine (1-year auto-renewal)
But it's not just the photos that make this a good buy. Stories of local natives and their history, wonders of geology, hiking excursions and even a few pages of humor make for a well-rounded and enjoyable magazine.
A good purchase for anyone wanting to learn more about, or longing to return to, Arizona.I read much on southwestern history and quite an amount of that history happened in and around Arizona Territory and since 1912, the state of Arizona. Much of the 19th century Indian Wars, with U.S. cavalry and Apache clashing with each other, centered in Arizona too. So, from my readings in Arizona Highways, I had planned to retire in Arizona, but things turned out differently. Though I now live retired in Virginia, I continue to receive Arizona Highways every single month and would not wish to be without it.
Though the magazine has experienced several editorial changes of late, the magazine still continues to be very readable. In addition the yearly calendars published by Arizona Highways are a high point for me too. For years I had bought only a monthly calendar, but have recently started getting the day-by-day desk calendar as well. Very useful and very practical.
The letters column each month shows few if any that do not appreciate Arizona Highways, and this magazine's photographic appeal experiences a worldwide distribution. Some only read and appreciate it as I have done for years, others vacation there, while a fortunate few actually relocate there.
Whatever use you make of it, Arizona Highways, is a terrific magazine with pictorial views into a picturesque state, while at the same time offering great travel tips.
Semper Fi.

I have enjoyed Arizona Highways for years. Now that I live in AZ it helps me know where to go & what to see. The photography is outstanding. I always mention to my son (an 18 yr resident) about the hiking trails. Some are new to him. I do keep the magazines for reference. Being new to AZ I would like to see plants identified so I can purchase ones I like or at least know the names of those I see on the roadways/fields/mountains/etc. Same with wildlife. Thanks for a wonderful magazine on AZ.Want Arizona Highways Magazine (1-year auto-renewal) Discount?

Love of Quilting
I used to go to the magazine stand and count the number of quilt patterns in the magazines that I'd consider making; the one with the highest number went home with me. Well, this one has a great mix of patterns that we too-busy, too-broke, too-fussy quilters would actually make. I know many quilters love the new fabric styles (I call them Midwest Modern since that's the name of the first one I saw that I truly disliked) and there are a few of those here.
Mostly there are simple and complex designs, interesting stories, and several Americana designs that work well for Quilt of Valor projects. Who wouldn't love a magazine that encourages us to make quilts for our troops?? In general the colors are more traditional, with surprising combinations and unusual settings to keep things interesting. The photography is nice as well, showing the lovely quilts off to good advantage. each issue has lots of options to choose from so you are not at a loss for ideas.
One really disturbing trend that seems to be growing at this and some other magazines is the preponderance of quilts month after month by the same 4 or 5 independent designers. Two separate issues had 3 projects by the same designer. REALLY??? There are thousands of quilters out there coming up with gorgeous quilts and posting them online; why aren't the mags making use of all this talent? Month after month it's the same 4 or 5 designers getting all the glory. Most do not seem to be actively soliciting fresh faces with fresh ideas. Not cool.
(Ok, McCall's Quilting has quilts by the many of same designers month after month, but they are all editors or staffers there. I like it that the folks who put the magazine together are designing the quilts in it.)
I do wish they would add quilting suggestions for every design, but even so this is one of the better option for us quiltaholics.So-I am a subscriber to this magazine. When I signed up for it (back in february), they offered a free gift... (still don't know what that is yet..) Today I get this free DVD in the mail of patterns and such. I think 'oh this must be my free gift'... um. no. If you read the fine print, you have so many days to send it back if you don't want it or you'll be charged 13.95 (a savings of over 40%off the regular subscriber price!) Not impressed.Gave lots of sources as well as several nice quilt patterns. Fons & Porter are known for their quilting. LLThese magazines have great patterns and are not stuffed with a zillion foolish advertising dropout filler. (I have a pet peeve about paying for something and having it filled with paper bits that have to be unloaded before you can read the magazine. I enjoy advertisements that are relevant to the magazine topic, however). I also appreciate the ability to see the magazine online or download it to my iPad.
