Alaska

AlaskaThis is a magazine with something interesting for everyone. We so enjoy reading it every time it comes. Kudos to the writers!

Order placed on 9/30/11 and it is 12/22/11 without an issue in sight yet? The 1st ETA was in November, then revised twice before showing 12/18/11....maybe it would be better to say "pending" and just receive 1 yr's worth of issues? Hope this shows up in the mailbox soon especially since it was supposed to be a gift for early December 2011.

Let me say I love magazines and I do get a few...probably more than a few...and I LOVE this magazine! As does my husband! We read it when we receive it no going to a "be read" in a few days pile for this one! The pages are glossy and feel nice; the stories are wonderful! We have been to AK once and plan to go back again this year. GREAT reading and photography! Thanks!

This is a very interesting magazine, as it always has been, but the paper it is now printed on is just awful. At the same time that I was reading the latest issue, I was also reading a magazine called Fine Books and Collections. When you compare the two, Alaska Magazine looks like a piece of junk. The colors in the photos are subdued. The texture of the paper just jumps out at you. I read that they chose this paper because it tears less in shipping. Reminds me of how "they" ruined the tomato by making it indestructible for shipping. I hope Alaska Magazine comes to their senses and uses paper like I saw in Fine Books and Collections magazine.

Originally ordered this magazine because of an article about Ladd AFB. I lived there in the 50's and it brought back many memories. There is so much that can be told about life in those days.

My family moved from Nellis AFB in Las Vegas Nevada to Alaska. A dramatic life change, two opposite climates.

Electronic Musician

Electronic MusicianI feel like it's another corporate magazine, nothing remotely underground or exciting. it did get me into some bands that I didn't know about before, but as far as teaching you how to become an electronic musician, there's nothing in there that Sound on Sound doesn't do 100 times better. It needs better features rather than just expensive product review. I am never going to buy a $15,000 set of monitor speakers, etc.

Consumer Reports On Health (1-year auto-renewal)

Consumer Reports On HealthAs a health professional in Nutrition, Regeistered Dietitian practicing in the Community Nutrition field, I thought this "magazine" would be full of up-to-date information. Rather I received an eight page "newsletter," written at a fourth grade reading level. Everything written in the articles was old news. It was way overpriced for a product the size of my weekly "Church Bulliten."

As someone who is not a registered dietician, but who values good health, I have found this magazine to provide great, up-to-date information. I have given it as a gift a number of times, because I have found it to add quality to my life, and hope that it will to others' as well!

Nowhere more than in the US is this kind of publication desperately needed what with all the doublespeak, pseudo-science and borderline-illegal/unethical claims being made in advertising, advertorials, product placements etc.

For me, I almost feel like I'm working on even footing against the marketing of health-related products by subscribing to this report. Without it, I'm lost at sea.

Read Best Reviews of Consumer Reports On Health (1-year auto-renewal) Here

I am a longtime subscriber to Consumer Reports and I also subscribe to the website and also to the online consumer reports health. This adds up to quite a few $ per year and I feel I deserve all their content. Recently I have received a direct mail ad for OnHealth, which is a print product. The ad shouts the tabloid glaring headlines we associate with sleazy operations. It is also impossible to tell the relation to the online health site; is it the same content? And if not, why is significant health information being witheld from my $19/year online subscription?

CU used to be a quiet and conservative organization. A few years ago they took on some marketing advice and became much more aggressive about selling their content six ways from Sunday. I am a supporter of the mission of CU and understand they need to seek revenues. But I am dismayed by the loud, vulgar advertising and the attempts to sell overlapping content. They have become a little too much like all the quick-buck companies they criticize.

I received these as a gift from my mom. I will say that I am heavy into alternative health.

A lot of the information in these reports goes along with mainstream medical information. If you already

receive or read about it online, then this type of reporting probably is not necessary.

The quality of the reports is about on par with local newsletters and magazines that I get for free

at the grocery store.

After having read some of the contents of the reports I will say that they tend to disagree with

alternative medicine newsletters on certain issues and of course it appears that these newsletters are probably

either in the pockets of big pharma or are just repeating common medical knowledge which tends to be in

the pockets of big pharma. So I'd say it is a hit and miss of good and possibly slanted information which is not necessarily good for you, at least in my opinion.

Although I guess if you hate reading at a computer and your grocery store doesn't carry these types of

magazines, and you are not into mainstream medical care, then maybe you might like these. I still think

there are better options out there. My mom apparently likes these.

Harper's BAZAAR (1-year auto-renewal)

Harper's BAZAARWhen funds were tight I had a difficult time deciding which magazine subscriptions to keep. Each women's magazine has a slightly different feel in the writing, though with increased competition, these styles seem to be in flux. I finally decided that I preferred the writing in Bazaar and was getting tired of what I felt was Vogue's Cosmopolitan attempt to catch a larger readership (if I want to subscribe to Cosmo, I'll bloody well subscribe). The featured designers are more cutting edge and less mainstream than what is found in Vogue. It's a bit snottier (though there are far snottier magazines if you are looking for extreme fashions). Among my complaints: Bazaar is an obviously thinner magazine, and while most of Vogue's content is adverts, it does seem to have more articles. Another item that I find highly irritating, is Bazaar's society items. I really don't give a ---who is wearing what at what charity gala, especially when I don't play footsies with these people. Those complaints aside, this is still my favorite fashion magazine.

... in the U.S. is Harper's Bazaar. You need only check out the recent covers in black and white, featuring Charlize Theron and Demi Moore, to see why this mouthwatering magazine is the high water mark for the best of the best of what's on offer at the supermarket check out stands stateside.

In a market crowded with magazines which look increasingly the same and seem to recycle the identical set of celebrity photos over and over again (snooze), Bazaar has cast an eye on the illustrious typography and design sense of its own past years. The results are evident on every glossy page, with very little of the guilty aftertaste here that you'll surely feel after flipping through the advertising book that is any issue of its bloated, mainstream market competitors.

Are the clothes ridiculously expensive for all but the richest among us? Of course. Do we really care about who showed up at what swanky party in NYC? Probably not. Will we ever look like any of those models? Darlin', you jest! But we do care (admit it) about the fantasy, the luxe, the allure of beautiful clothes on beautiful people -they're lovely to behold, it's only natural, and it's fun -you could do a lot worse than dropping a few bucks on this class act and its peer in the "shelter" magazines group, House and Garden. Another magazine not overstuffed with ads and perfumes and heavy on design sophistication, also highly recommended.

I'm sure she's a perfectly lovely person, but I have to say that the recent spread featuring the Duchess of Cornwall (that'd be Prince Chuck's new wife, Camilla) sitting at her vanity with an iPod in her ear was somewhat less than captivating ... unless you count all of the delicious little Corgis showing off at her feet (and I do) ... I don't understand how this got in, but sometimes these things are random, and she is after all the royal consort. Ho hum. Just a blip on the Bazaar radar.

Excepting things like that, way to go, Bazaar! Show them how it's done!

Harper's is the best if you enjoy high fashion. Yes, most of the items featured are completely unaffordable for the average person. However, by looking at the featured designer items and the gorgeous photo layouts, you can get an idea of what's fashionable or will be fashionable in about 2 months. If you want to stay ahead of the trends, this is a must-have.

Read Best Reviews of Harper's BAZAAR (1-year auto-renewal) Here

I guess I'm too old for this magazine now. It was so much better in the late 70s to mid 80s. Now it's too celebrity oriented, and many of the models are too thin and alien-looking--and too young. Back in the day, I enjoyed looking at the hair and makeup on the cover model, whose name I might know, but I didn't know her backstory, because she was not an overexposed celebrity. I don't have any of the old Bazaars to compare with the new, but I can sense that something is off about the design layout--too busy? too jarring? It used to be a pleasant distraction from everyday life; I used to look at this magazine over and over. I wish I had saved every old copy.

Would it be too expensive to do a retro version of this mag for us older women? I'm still thin, I work out, I love to dress fashionably and try new products--and I have money. I'm not 20 any more, but I'm far from frumpy, so don't dismiss this market too quickly, publishers. The magazines out there for mature women are condescending and do not appeal to those of us who still have a young body and, more important, a young mind. Also, they're full of pharmaceutical ads, which I hate. I do not want to be reminded of troubles when I am being entertained by my magazines.

I gave it a chance, then I canceled my subscription.

"Harper's Bazaar" has been running a losing race with "Vogue" for the past 40 years. The magazine should play to its strengths. Its graphics and photo layouts are terrific. However, the articles are insipid and superficial; not worth a read. "Bazaar" unfortunately went downhill when Liz Tilberis took over the top spot; in the 60s and 70s the look was all about elegance and glamour. Ms. Tilberis stated in an editorial in the 90's that fashion was all about "youth and ectomorphism" and featured human Barbie dolls in grunge outfits. Okay, it looked funny, but what woman over 25 would spend good money to look like that? The impression one gets from reading "Bazaar" now is that it's still trying to find its target audience. When "Bazaar" stops acting as if it were afraid to compete with Vogue and emphasizes its strengths, it will be a much better magazine.

Singing News Magazine

Singing News MagazineI have been exposed to the Singing News for going on 30 years and I am totally sold on its contributors as well as it's staff. This publication keeps fans and gospel music listeners abreast of the up and coming events, personnel changes and special needs of groups that travel around singing Southern Gospel music. I truly love the articles and pictures which bring some very popular people down to a regular persons level. By no means are they gods but they all (gospel music legends) are held in high regards. If you desire to be informed in this venue of music, this would be the magazine for you.

Just subscribed to The Singing News and received it after about 6 wks! Thanks for putting our Gospel group, THE TIPTONS, inside the July 2012 (pg 36) issue. Love how you all help Southern Gospel groups and report on and about them. God bless you!:)

As a voice teacher and singer, I love to go through all the singing material out there to review for my own blog: . Singing News is a really impressive little magazine that caters to the Southern Gospel Singing community. I haven't seen a singing magazine like it. I really enjoyed the lay out and the information it had. I would only subscribe of course if this is your genre interest since it is so specific and perfect for that.

Council members should relinquish their membership when it comes to receiving awards or honors at the ceremonies.

My favorite group walked away with numerous awards. I have always believe that they were #1, but three of the group members serve as Board of Directors for several southern gospel music events.

Some people are questioning why their favorite group wasn't nominated for an award. There are other qualified people who can serve on the board of directors.

I haven't mastered the craft of writing, but it can't be any worst than trying to read those pseudo-blog sites that are under various disguises and names.

They may feel comfortable writing their comments on those site because their views will not get publish in the Singing News Magazine.

Natural Health (1-year auto-renewal)

Natural HealthThis magazine contains basic and simplistic info on nutrition you're seen elsewhere. Unless you're a beginner who has little knowledge and wants info at a very basic level-go elsewhere. It lacks any real depth. It also has a very inordinate amount of advertisements that makes up the majority of pages.

This magazine has very low quality content. The articles in the magazine are simple, anecdotal and contain very little useful information. The stories contain little snippets from books and other articles but never get into anything in depth. They don't seem original at all. The magazine is also laden with advertisements for Hydroxycut, supplements, and other associated junk science items. So much for "natural health." I would pass on this magazine.

Buy Natural Health (1-year auto-renewal) Now

Like the one-star reviewer, I am not finding much content in this magazine have only received a couple of copies so far, but the latest is filled with articles urging use of various supplements and extracts rather than healthy dietary plans (an article on how to lower cholesterol in particular completely ignores basic foods known to reduce blood fats). Additionally, an article on massage is accompanied by a provocative photo of a young woman that reminds me of what used to show up in "men's magazines". My "Vegetarian Times" is way more helpful with health planning. I'll be letting this subscription run out, and if there are many more pictures like the massage one I'll be getting a pro-rated refund.

I subscribed to the magazine for a year. I thought about doing another year, and sent in a request, but changed my mind. I didn't feel it was worth the money....there wasn't enough substance (lots of advertisements....even for non-natural products). I got a bill in the mail, but there was no option to cancel. So I didn't pay it. I figured they might send another notice and then just terminate my account. I got another bill, same thing. Then I got a notice that it was being sent to collections. I was appalled that they would do business this way.

There is no customer service number. YOU CANNOT SPEAK TO ANYONE. It is infuriating. The ONLY way I could figure out how to cancel my subscription was to send a comment to them online and hope that they would take care of it. I received a reply a few days later saying that it had been cancelled, yet I just got another letter from a collection agency (NSA) demanding that I pay $20 for magazines I never received.

This is ridiculous.

DO NOT give them your business.

Superb Crosswords Jumbo

Superb Crosswords JumboThis and the National Observer Book of Crosswords are my favorites, both from Kappa Publishing. These puzzles are also themed and most who like harder puzzles would prefer both books. I think Kappa Publishing has improved the quality of this magazine since I last purchased it which was several years ago. I also think the print and layout of the puzzles are excellent. I would highly recommend a subscription directly from the publisher if you are interested in a faster turnaround time. There's a mixture of smaller and larger, Sunday-size puzzles. Keep up the awesome quality with this publication!

American Indian Art Magazine

American Indian Art MagazineI have been an avid reader of American Indian Arts Magazine for over 12 years. As a museum docent in American Indian museums during all these years, I obtain valuable information about artists, their work, and historical and current topics from the fine articles. The results of auctions are always interesting to me. I also benefit from articles written by well-known experts in specific areas of American Indian art. Finally, I save all my issues for reference, and use them regularly.

American Indian Art Magazine is the most awesome and informative magazine on Native American art that I have found on the magazine circuit! The quarterly publication offers exceptional articles and fabulous photography of ancient to modern Native American art/artifacts/artworks which include jewelry, clothing, pottery, dolls, woven/beaded/quilled/painted and handcrafted items as well as everyday items needed to survive the N. A. lifeways. Not only are the articles historically acurate, they are informative and appeal to a large spectrum of artistic interests from collectors to students. They are written in a light, easy to follow manner yet they maintain a professional perspective. Personally I love the close-up pictures in both articles and advertisements! These photo's which relay the intricate and artistic details with each photo, emphasize the simplistic beauty that is exemplified by the original artist who designed and created it. The magazine also lists upcoming Native American Art sales and provides current auction prices for a wide range of items. This is a magazine that once one has opened its cover , it can't be easily set aside but draws you to read and review the numerous and information and photos cover to cover.

There is no better means to find, to preview Indian Art than via this Indian Art magazine. Every month fresh, great art delivered to your door. It doesn't get any better than this, unless ... unless, they have come up with a means of injecting Indian Art straight into my dreams. The art work is fresh, it's bright, it's friendly and it's all mine. ... ALL MINE!! ... Until the next month when the next great collection of Indian Art work shows up at my door.
